Disturbances such as disease can reshape communities through interruption of ecological interactions. Changes to population demographics alter how effectively a species performs its ecological role. While a population may recover in density, this may not translate to recovery of ecological function. In 2013, a sea star wasting syndrome outbreak caused mass mortality of the keystone predator Pisaster ochraceus on the North American Pacific coast. We analyzed sea star counts, biomass, size distributions, and recruitment from long‐term intertidal monitoring sites from San Diego to Alaska to assess regional trends in sea star recovery following the outbreak. Recruitment, an indicator of population recovery, has been spatially patchy and varied within and among regions of the coast. Despite sea star counts approaching predisease numbers, sea star biomass, a measure of predation potential on the mussel Mytilus californianus, has remained low. This indicates that post‐outbreak populations have not regained their full predation pressure. The regional variability in percent of recovering sites suggested differences in factors promoting sea star recovery between regions but did not show consistent patterns in postoutbreak recruitment on a coast‐wide scale. These results shape predictions of where changes in community composition are likely to occur in years following the disease outbreak and provide insight into how populations of keystone species resume their ecological roles following mortality‐inducing disturbances.  相似文献

Over 20 species of asteroids were devastated by a sea star wasting disease (SSWD) epizootic, linked to a densovirus, from Mexico to Alaska in 2013 and 2014. For Pisaster ochraceus from the San Juan Islands, South Puget Sound and Washington outer coast, time-series monitoring showed rapid disease spread, high mortality rates in 2014, and continuing levels of wasting in the survivors in 2015. Peak prevalence of disease at 16 sites ranged to 100%, with an overall mean of 61%. Analysis of longitudinal data showed disease risk was correlated with both size and temperature and resulted in shifts in population size structure; adult populations fell to one quarter of pre-outbreak abundances. In laboratory experiments, time between development of disease signs and death was influenced by temperature in adults but not juveniles and adult mortality was 18% higher in the 19°C treatment compared to the lower temperature treatments. While larger ochre stars developed disease signs sooner than juveniles, diseased juveniles died more quickly than diseased adults. Unusual 2–3°C warm temperature anomalies were coincident with the summer 2014 mortalities. We suggest these warm waters could have increased the disease progression and mortality rates of SSWD in Washington State.  相似文献

Accumulating evidence suggests that a single microRNA (miRNA) locus can generate a series of sequences during miRNA maturation process. These multiple sequences, called miRNA variants, or isomiRs, have different lengths and different 5′ and 3′ ends. Some of these isomiRs are detected as varied nucleotides and 3′ additional non-template nucleotides. As physiological miRNA isoforms, they have drawn attention for possible regulatory biological roles. The present work mainly reviews miRNA/isomiR biogenesis, isomiR expression patterns, and functional and evolutionary implications, especially between isomiRs from homologous and clustered miRNA loci. The phenomenon of multiple isomiRs and their biological roles indicates that analysis performed at the miRNA and isomiR levels should be included in miRNA studies. This may enrich and complicate miRNA biogenesis and coding–non-coding RNA regulatory networks.  相似文献

This review summarizes and integrates our current understanding of how sea stars make gametes. Although little is known of the mechanism of germ line formation in these animals, recent results point to specific cells and to cohorts of molecules in the embryos and larvae that may lay the ground work for future research efforts. A coelomic outpocketing forms in the posterior of the gut in larvae, referred to as the posterior enterocoel (PE), that when removed, significantly reduces the number of germ cell later in larval growth. This same PE structure also selectively accumulates several germ‐line associated factors—vasa, nanos, piwi—and excludes factors involved in somatic cell fate. Since its formation is relatively late in development, these germ cells may form by inductive mechanisms. When integrated into the morphological observations of germ cells and gonad development in larvae, juveniles, and adults, the field of germ line determination appears to have a good model system to study inductive germ line determination to complement the recent work on the molecular mechanisms in mice. We hope this review will also guide investigators interested in germ line determination and regulation of the germ line into how these animals can help in this research field. The review is not intended to be comprehensive—sea star reproduction has been studied for over 100 years and many reviews are comprehensive in their coverage of, for example, seasonal growth of the gonads in response to light, nutrient, and temperature. Aims: This study aimed at isolating thermophilic bacteria that utilize cheap carbon substrates for the economically feasible production of poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate), poly(3HB), at elevated temperatures. Methods and Results: Thermophilic bacteria were enriched from an aerobic organic waste treatment plant in Germany, and from hot springs in Egypt. Using the viable colony staining method for hydrophobic cellular inclusions with Nile red in mineral salts medium (MSM) containing different carbon sources, six Gram‐negative bacteria were isolated. Under the cultivation conditions used in this study, strains MW9, MW11, MW12, MW13 and MW14 formed stable star‐shaped cell‐aggregates (SSCAs) during growth; only strain MW10 consisted of free‐living rod‐shaped cells. The phylogenetic relationships of the strains as derived from 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons revealed them as members of the Alphaproteobacteria. The 16S rRNA gene sequences of the isolates were very similar (>99% similarity) and exhibited similarities ranging from 93 to 99% with the most closely related species that were Chelatococcus daeguensis, Chelatococcus sambhunathii , Chelatococcus asaccharovorans, Bosea minatitlanensis, Bosea thiooxidans and Methylobacterium lusitanum. Strains MW9, MW10, MW13 and MW14 grew optimally in MSM with glucose, whereas strains MW11 and MW12 preferred glycerol as sole carbon source for growth and poly(3HB) accumulation. The highest cell density and highest poly(3HB) content attained were 4·8 g l?l (cell dry weight) and 73% (w/w), respectively. Cells of all strains grew at temperatures between 37 and 55°C with the optimum growth at 50°C. Conclusions: New PHA‐accumulating thermophilic bacterial strains were isolated and characterized to produce poly(3HB) from glucose or glycerol in MSM at 50°C. SSCAs formation was reported during growth. Significance and Impact of the Study: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the formation of SSCAs by PHA‐accumulating bacteria and also by thermophilic bacteria. PHA‐producing thermophiles can significantly reduce the costs of fermentative PHA production.  相似文献

Concerns have been raised that posterior probabilities on phylogenetic trees can be unreliable when the true tree is unresolved or has very short internal branches, because existing methods for Bayesian phylogenetic analysis do not explicitly evaluate unresolved trees. Two recent papers have proposed that evaluating only resolved trees results in a "star tree paradox": when the true tree is unresolved or close to it, posterior probabilities were predicted to become increasingly unpredictable as sequence length grows, resulting in inflated confidence in one resolved tree or another and an increasing risk of false-positive inferences. Here we show that this is not the case; existing Bayesian methods do not lead to an inflation of statistical confidence, provided the evolutionary model is correct and uninformative priors are assumed. Posterior probabilities do not become increasingly unpredictable with increasing sequence length, and they exhibit conservative type I error rates, leading to a low rate of false-positive inferences. With infinite data, posterior probabilities give equal support for all resolved trees, and the rate of false inferences falls to zero. We conclude that there is no star tree paradox caused by not sampling unresolved trees.  相似文献

We describe the first proteomic characterization of the radial nerve cord (RNC) of an echinoderm, the sea star Marthasterias glacialis. The combination of 2-DE with MS (MALDI-TOF/TOF) resulted in the identification of 286 proteins in the RNC. Additionally, 158 proteins were identified in the synaptosomal membranes enriched fraction after 1-DE separation. The 2-DE RNC reference map is available via the WORLD-2DPAGE Portal (http://www.expasy.ch/world-2dpage/) along with the associated protein identification data which are also available in the PRIDE database. The identified proteins constitute the first high-throughput evidence that seems to indicate that echinoderms nervous transmission relies primarily on chemical synapses which is similar to the synaptic activity in adult mammal's spinal cord. Furthermore, several homologous proteins known to participate in the regeneration events of other organisms were also identified, and thus can be used as targets for future studies aiming to understand the poorly uncharacterized regeneration capability of echinoderms. This "echinoderm missing link" is also a contribution to unravel the mystery of deuterostomian CNS evolution.  相似文献

Background

Natural or endogenous sense/antisense miRNAs, located on sense and antisense strands in the same genomic region, respectively, are detected recently. However, little is known about these miRNA pairs, especially for their distributions in different animal species. We herein present systematic analysis of them in human, mouse and rat miRNAs, and their expression patterns based on deep sequencing datasets.

Methods and results

The phenomenon of miRNA–miRNA interaction could be detected in different animal species. The common miRNAs pairs were found across species. These miRNA pairs could form miRNA:miRNA duplex with complete complementary structure, and were prone to be located on specific chromosomes. They might be homologous miRNA genes (especially in human), or clustered in a gene cluster (especially in rat), or simultaneously detected in different genomic regions due to multicopy pre-miRNAs. Remarkably, some miRNA pairs, located in different genomic regions, also showed complementarity as well as endogenous sense/antisense miRNAs. Based on published deep sequencing datasets, one member of miRNA pairs always was abundantly expressed, whereas another was quite rare. Rare common target mRNAs of these miRNA pairs were predicted.

Conclusions

Interaction between miRNAs and significant expression divergence implied complex potential mutual regulatory pattern in the miRNA world. The study would enrich miRNA regulatory network.  相似文献
