Nitrate reduction in roots and shoots and exchange of reduced N between organs were quantitatively estimated in intact 13-d-old seedlings of two-row barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Daisengold) using the 15N-incorporation model (A. Gojon et al. (1986) Plant Physiol. 82, 254–260), except that NH + 4 was replaced by NO - 2 . N-depleted seedlings were exposed to media containing both nitrate (1.8 mM) and nitrite (0.2 mM) under a light-dark cycle of 12:12 h at 20°C; the media contained different amounts of 15N labeling. Experiments were started either immediately after the beginning (expt. 1) or immediately prior to the end (expt. 2) of the light period, and plants were sampled subsequently at each light-dark transition throughout 36 h. The plants effectively utilized 15NO - 3 and accumulated it as reduced 15N, predominantly in the shoots. Accumulation of reduced 15N in both experiments was nearly the same at the end of the experiment but the accumulation pattern in roots and shoots during each 12-h period differed greatly depending on time and the light conditions. In expt. 1, the roots accounted for 31% (light), 58% (dark), and 9% (light) of nitrate reduction by the whole plants, while in expt. 2 the contributions of the root were 82% (dark), 20% (light), and 29% (dark), during each of the three 12-h periods. Xylem transport of nitrate drastically decreased in the dark, but that of reduced N rather increased. The downward translocation of reduced 15N increased while nitrate reduction in the root decreased, whereas upward translocation decreased while nitrate reduction in the shoot increased. We conclude that the cycling of reduced N through the plant is important for N feeding of each organ, and that the transport system of reduced N by way of xylem and phloem, as well as nitrate reduction by root and shoot, can be modulated in response to the relative magnitude of reduced-N demands by the root and shoot, with the one or the other predominating under different circumstances.Symbols Anl accumulation of reduced 15N from 15NO - 3 in 14NO - 3 -fed roots of divided root system - Ar accumulation in root of reduced 15N from 15NO - 3 - As accumulation in shoot of reduced 15N from 15NO - 3 - Rr 15NO - 3 reduction in root - Rs 15NO - 3 reduction in shoot - Tp translocation to root of shoot-reduced 15N from 15NO - 3 in phloem - Tx translocation to shoot of root-reduced 15N from 15NO - 3 in xylem  相似文献

The caudal photoreceptors (CPRs) of crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) can trigger walking and abdominal movements by their response to light.
1.  In a restrained, inverted crayfish, illumination of A6 evoked a CPR discharge followed by leg movements and bursting from the abdominal tonic flexor (TF) motoneurons. Intracellular electrical stimulation of a single CPR at high frequency (80 Hz) evoked similar responses.
2.  Responses only occurred when a single CPR axon was driven at 60 Hz or more and outlasted the stimulus.
3.  CPR stimulation also excites the pattern-initiating network (Moore and Larimer 1987) in the abdomen.
4.  The axon of the CPR projects from ganglion A6 to the brain. Terminal branches occur in the subesophageal ganglion and the brain. A small descending interneuron is dye-coupled to CPR in the subesophageal ganglion.
5.  In animals with cut circumesophageal connectives, the CPRs can evoke walking and the abdominal motor pattern.
6.  The relationship of the abdominal motor pattern to walking is altered by restraint and/or inversion. In freely moving crayfish, the cyclic abdominal motor pattern is only observed with backward walking. In restrained, inverted crayfish, the motor pattern occurs with both forward or backward walking.

The effects of different light regimes on the survival, growth and morphology ofQuercus serrata seedlings were studied in canopies ofMiscanthus sinensis. The seedlings of various ages (0–3 yr) were grown in three light regimes: under a denseM. sinensis canopy (TG plot) receiving 2.5%–8.7% of full sunlight, under a relatively sparse canopy (SG plot) receiving 3.8%–16.1% of light and in an adjacent open site (NG plot). There was a little difference in the survival ofQ. serrata seedlings among the three plots. Height and diameter of stem and total leaf area of the seedlings were significantly lower in the shadier plots. However, the first (bottom) flush of the stem was significantly longer in the TG plot than in the NG and SG plots. Total dry weights of individual 1- and 2-yr-oldQ. serrata seedlings in the TG plot were reduced to about one-twelfth of those in the NG plot. Although the relative proportion in dry weight of each organ did not differ significantly among the plots, leaf area ratio, specific leaf area and stem height per unit dry weight were significantly higher in shadier plots. The leaf area per unit stem height was increased considerably in the sunnier plots.  相似文献

Transitions in the growth limiting factor from light (I) to nitrogen (N) and vice versa caused changes in geosmin production, protein and carbohydrate content, and the synthesis of pigments such as chlorophyll a (Chl a), phycobiliproteins (PBPs), and -carotene of the cyanobacterium Oscillatoria brevis. Following IN transition the first 150h, the decrease in protein content was compensated for by an increase of carbohydrates, and thereby, a constant biomass level was maintained in this period. Thereafter, biimass dropped to 15% of its initial level. A decrease in geosmin and pigment content was observed during transition from IN-limited growth. However, geosmin increased relative to phytol (Chl a) and -carotene which may indicate that a lowered demand for phytol and -carotene during N-limited growth allows isoprenoid precursors to be directed to geosmin rather than to pigment synthesis. Synthesis of Chl a and -carotene at the expense of geosmin was suggested for the observed start of increase in geosmin production only at the time that Chl a and -carotene had reached their I-limited steady state. Transition from nitrogen to light limited growth caused an acceleration of metabolism shown by a rapid decrease in carbohydrate content accompanied by an increase in protein content. The growth rate of the organisms temporarily exceeded the dilution rate of the culture and the biomass level increased 6-fold. Due to the only modest changes in geosmin production (2-fold) compared to changes in biomass level (6-fold) during I-or N-limited growth, environmental factors seem to have limited effect on geosmin production.Abbreviations Chl a chlorophyll a - dry wt dry weight; - I-limited light-limited - N-limited nitrogen-limited - PBP phycobiliprotein This research was performed at the Department of Microbiology, University of Amsterdam, with finacial support provided by the Royal Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Royal Norwegian Council for Scientific and Industrial Research  相似文献

Summary Plants of white clover Trifolium repens were grown under the canopies of three grass species, Lolium perenne, Agrostis tenuis and Holcus lanatus, and under simulated canopies of black polythene and controls were exposed to unfiltered natural radiation. The canopies were adjusted so that they transmitted equal intensities of Photosynthetically Active Radiation (P.A.R.). The ratio of red to far red radiation () was unchanged under the black polythene canopies but was reduced under canopies of Lolium and Agrostis and even more so under Holcus. The effect of canopy filtered radiation on the growth of clover was greatly to reduced internode length, mean number of nodes, the number of branched nodes and the number of rooted nodes and greatly to increase petiole length. The effect of canopies of Holcus was greater than that of the other grass species both in its effect on and on the responses of the clover plant to its shade.  相似文献

Summary At sites in the United States, creosote bushes (Larrea tridentata (DC.) Cov.) orient foliage clusters predominantly toward the southeast. Foliage of bushes at the southernmost distribution extreme in Mexico shows no predominant orientation. Clusters at all sites are inclined between 33° and 71° from the horizontal. Inclinations are steeper in the drier and hotter Mojave Desert than in the Chihuahuan Desert. Individual leaflets, though not measured, appear more randomly oriented than foliage clusters. In several populations studied, branches were shorter in the southeastern sectors of the crown, reducing self-shading early in the morning. Measurements of direct beam radiation interception by detached branches, using digital image processing, indicated that foliage clusters oriented toward the southeast exhibited less self-shading during spring mornings than clusters oriented northeast. This effect was not apparent at the summer solstice. This type of canopy architecture may tend to minimize self-shading during the morning hours when conditions are more favorable for photosynthesis, resulting in an improved daily water use efficiency.  相似文献

Photoinhibition of photosynthesis was induced in attached leaves of kiwifruit grown in natural light not exceeding a photon flux density (PFD) of 300 mol·m-2·s-1, by exposing them to a PFD of 1500 mol·m-2·s-1. The temperature was held constant, between 5 and 35° C, during the exposure to high light. The kinetics of photoinhibition were measured by chlorophyll fluorescence at 77K and the photon yield of photosynthetic O2 evolution. Photoinhibition occurred at all temperatures but was greatest at low temperatures. Photoinhibition followed pseudo first-order kinetics, as determined by the variable fluorescence (F v) and photon yield, with the long-term steady-state of photoinhibition strongly dependent on temperature wheareas the observed rate constant was only weakly temperature-dependent. Temperature had little effect on the decrease in the maximum fluorescence (F m) but the increase in the instantaneous fluorescence (F o) was significantly affected by low temperatures in particular. These changes in fluorescence indicate that kiwifruit leaves have some capacity to dissipate excessive excitation energy by increasing the rate constant for non-radiative (thermal) energy dissipation although temperature apparently had little effect on this. Direct photoinhibitory damage to the photosystem II reaction centres was evident by the increases in F o and extreme, irreversible damage occurred at the lower temperatures. This indicates that kiwifruit leaves were most susceptible to photoinhibition at low temperatures because direct damage to the reaction centres was greatest at these temperatures. The results also imply that mechanisms to dissipate excess energy were inadequate to afford any protection from photoinhibition over a wide temperature range in these shade-grown leaves.Abbreviations and symbols fluorescence yield correction coefficient - F o, F m, F v instantaneous, maximum, variable fluorescence - K D, K F, K P, K T rate constants for non-radiative energy dissipation, fluorescence, photochemistry, energy transfer to photosystem I - PFD photon flux density - PSI, II photosystem I, II - i photon yield of photosynthesis (incident light)  相似文献

Light and temperature markedly influence sporangiophore development inPhycomyces blakesleeanus. Under normal conditions in the dark, low temperature drastically stimulates the production of dwarf sporangiophores (microphorogenesis) and inhibits that of giant sporangiophores (macrophorogenesis). These effects of low temperature could still be observed if applied only for a short period before sporangiophore initiation. Continuous white illumination strongly inhibits microphorogenesis and slightly stimulates macrophorogenesis. Short exposures to white light noticeably inhibit microphorogenesis and stimulate macrophorogenesis when given to mycelia grown for between 90 and 160 h at 14° C or 150 h or more at 10° C. These results indicate the existence in the mycelium of developmental stages for the regulation of sporangiophorogenesis by environmental signals.  相似文献
