Temporal fluctuations in recruitment are involved in two distinct coexistence mechanisms, the storage effect and relative nonlinearity of competition, which may act simultaneously to stabilize species coexistence. It is shown that comparisons of recruitment variation between species at high versus low densities can test whether these mechanisms are responsible for stable coexistence. Moreover, under certain circumstances, these comparisons can measure the total coexistence stabilizing effect of the mechanism. These comparisons are clearest for the situation of an invader (a species perturbed to low density) in the presence of its competitors, termed residents. Then average invader-resident differences in the variances of log recruitment, potentially weighted by adult survival rates and species' sensitivities to competition, are proportional to the overall stabilizing effect of the storage effect and relative nonlinearity of competition. Less effective comparisons are available for species naturally at high and low densities or with substantial mean differences in average fitness. These developments lead also to a technique of partitioning the long-term low-density growth rate of a species into community average measures of stabilizing mechanisms, deviations from these measures, and other factors. The community average measure is argued as most appropriate for understanding the ability of a coexistence mechanism to stabilize coexistence. Individual species' deviations from the community average indicate the ways in a which a coexistence mechanism may affect average fitness differences between species either enhancing or diminishing the ability of a given set of species to coexist, depending on other factors. This approach provides a general new tool for analyzing species coexistence.  相似文献

Mixtures containing the majority of partially O-methylated alditol acetates (PMAAs), necessary for the GC-MS based identification of glycosidic linkages in oligo- and polymeric structures were prepared. Rha, Fuc, Rib, Ara, Xyl, Man, Gal, and Glc were converted to their Me glycosides, and the products were progressively O-methylated using the Purdie reagent at 25 degrees C. Resulting PMGs were assayed by TLC and at times that were optimum for formation of mono-O-methyl derivatives and later for higher degrees of methylation; they were converted to PMAAs, in a process incorporating NaB(2)H(4) reduction. The majority of these can be used as standards for simultaneous identification of pyranosides and some furanosyl units particularly in heteropolysaccharides. The relative reactivities of OH-groups were determined by GC-MS as: Me alpha- and beta-Glcp, HO-2>HO-4>HO-3>HO-6, Me alpha- and beta-Galp, HO-3>HO-2>HO-4>HO-6, Me alpha-Manp, HO-3>HO-2>HO-4>HO-6, Me beta-Manp, HO-3>HO-4HO-6>HO-2, Me alpha-Rhap, OH-3>OH-2>OH-4; Me alphabeta-Fucp, OH-2>OH-3>OH-4, and Me alphabeta-Xylp, OH-2>OH-4>OH-3. The results differ from those obtained with Haworth, Hakomori, and Ciucanu methylation techniques, although some similarities occurred with the more rapid Kuhn method.  相似文献

The aims of this study were to investigate the effects of maternal stress during pregnancy on the emotional reactivity, the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) axis, and the sympatho-adrenomedullary (SAM) system of goat offspring according to their gender, and to investigate the role of maternal cortisol in prenatal stress effects. Goats were exposed to ten transports in isolation or ten ACTH injections (0.125 IU/kg body weight) during the last third of pregnancy. Control goats remained undisturbed. No effect of repeated transport during the last third of pregnancy was found on basal cortisol concentrations of the offspring. However, an increase in phenylethanolamine N-methyl transferase activity in the adrenals was observed in prenatally stressed kids compared to control kids (P = 0.031). In the presence of novelty, prenatally stressed female kids were more active (P = 0.049) than control females; they also showed more signs of arousal (P = 0.039) and tended to explore more of their environment (P = 0.053) in reaction to a startling stimulus. On the contrary, prenatally stressed male kids tended to be less active (P = 0.051) than control male kids but showed more signs of distress (P = 0.047) in the presence of novelty. Intermediate effects were found on the emotional reactivity to novelty of kids born from dams given injections of ACTH. In conclusion, transport stress in pregnant goats affects the sympatho-adrenomedullary system and the emotional reactivity of their offspring in a gender-specific manner. Moreover, the effects of prenatal transport and ACTH injections showed some similarities but differed in some critical details.  相似文献

In this article, we explore the use of a parametric model (for analyzing survival data) which is defined to allow sensitivity analysis for the presence of informative censoring. The dependence between the failure and the censoring processes is expressed through a parameter delta and a general bias function B(t, theta). We calculate the expectation of the potential bias due to informative censoring, which is an overall measure of how misleading our results might be if censoring is actually nonignorable. Bounds are also calculated for quantities of interest, e.g., parameter of the distribution of the failure process, which do not depend on the choice of the bias function for fixed delta. An application that relates to systematic lupus erythematosus data illustrates how additional information can result in reducing the uncertainty on estimates of the location parameter. Sensitivity analysis on a relative risk parameter is also explored.  相似文献

Twenty-six monohydrates of alpha- and beta-D-glucopyranose were studied using gradient methods at the B3LYP/6-311++G** level of theory. Geometry optimization was carried out with the water molecules at different configurations around the glucose molecule. A new nomenclature for hydrated carbohydrates was developed to describe the water configurations. Zero-point vibrational energy, enthalpy, entropy, and relative free energy were obtained using the harmonic approximation. Hydrogen-bond energies for the monohydrates range from approximately -5 to -12 kcal/mol, and the average relative free energy is approximately 5 kcal/mol. The 1-hydroxy position is the most energetically favored site for hydration, and the region between the two and three positions is the next-most favored site. A water molecule approaching alpha-D-glucose between the 1- and 2-hydroxy positions pulls the 2-hydroxyl hydrogen atom away from the 1-hydroxy oxygen atom, thus increasing the hydrogen-bond length and also increasing the alpha-D-glucose energy. The increase in energy that occurs with a similar interaction on the beta-anomer is much less effective since the hydrogen bond is much longer. Using the calculated free energies of all 26 configurations, the anomer population (alpha/beta) increases in the beta-anomer population relative to the in vacuo case by approximately 10% at the expense of the alpha-anomer, giving an (alpha/beta) ratio of approximately 50/50. This result arises from entropy contributions favoring the beta-anomer more than the alpha-anomer. From analysis of donor and acceptor hydrogen-bond lengths, excellent correlation is found between the DFT calculated distances and those taken from carbohydrate structures in the Cambridge Crystallographic Data Bank.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to compare and evaluate the performance of electronic leaf wetness duration (LWD) sensors in measuring LWD in a cotton crop canopy when unpainted and painted sensors were used. LWD was measured with flat, printed-circuit wetness sensors, and the data were divided into two periods of 24 days: from 18 December 2001 to 10 January 2002, when the sensors were unpainted, and from 20 January to 13 February 2002, when the sensors were painted with white latex paint (two coats of paint). The data analysis included evaluating the coefficient of variation (CV%) among the six sensors for each day, and the relationship between the measured LWD (mean for the six sensors) and the number of hours with dew point depression under 2 °C, used as an indicator of dew presence. The results showed that the painting markedly reduced the CV% values. For the unpainted sensors the CV% was on average 67% against 9% for painted sensors. For the days without rainfall this reduction was greater. Comparing the sensor measurements to another estimator of LWD, in this case the number of hours with dew point depression under 2 °C, it was also observed that painting improved not only the precision of the sensors but also their sensitivity, because it increases the ability of the sensor to detect and measure the wetness promoted by small water droplets.  相似文献

Two high-resolution structures have been determined for Eschericia coli aspartate beta-semialdehyde dehydrogenase (ecASADH), an enzyme of the aspartate biosynthetic pathway, which is a potential target for novel antimicrobial drugs. Both ASADH structures were of the open form and were refined to 1.95 A and 1.6 A resolution, allowing a more detailed comparison with the closed form of the enzyme than previously possible. A more complex scheme for domain closure is apparent with the subunit being split into two further sub-domains with relative motions about three hinge axes. Analysis of hinge data and torsion-angle difference plots is combined to allow the proposal of a detailed structural mechanism for ecASADH domain closure. Additionally, asymmetric distortions of individual subunits are identified, which form the basis for the previously reported "half-of-the-sites reactivity" (HOSR). A putative explanation of this arrangement is also presented, suggesting the HOSR system may provide a means for ecASADH to offset the energy required to remobilise flexible loops at the end of the reaction cycle, and hence avoid falling into an energy minimum.  相似文献

Drought is a major abiotic stress that limits plant growth and crop productivity. A spontaneous wilty mutant (eibi1) hypersensitive to drought was identified from wild barley (Hordeum spontaneum Koch). eibi1 showed the highest relative water loss rate among the known wilty mutants, which indicates that eibi1 is one of the most drought-sensitive mutants. eibi1 had the same abscisic acid (ABA) level, the same ability to accumulate stress-induced ABA, and the same stomatal movement in response to light, dark, drought, and exogenous ABA as the wild type, revealing that eibi1 was neither an ABA-deficient nor an ABA-insensitive mutant. The eibi1 leaves had a larger chlorophyll efflux rate in 80% ethanol than the wild-type leaves; and the transpiration rate of eibi1 was more closely related to chlorophyll efflux rate than to stomatal density, demonstrating that the cuticle of eibi1 was defective. eibi1 will be a promising candidate to study the actual barrier layer in the cuticle that limits water loss of the plant. Exogenous ABA reduced leaf length growth in eibi1 more than in the wild type, implying an interaction on plant growth of ABA signal transduction and the eibi1 product. The main aim of this study was to compare the vascular reactivity of the perfused (Krebs, 4 ml/min) mesenteric vascular bed (MVB) isolated from rats with streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes of 8 weeks duration to that of the MVB from non-diabetic (ND) Wistar rats. There were no differences in basal perfusion pressure between the MVB isolated from STZ and ND rats. The addition of indomethacin to the perfusate increased the basal perfusion pressure in both ND (18.8 +/- 0.7 vs 29.4 +/- 3.7 mmHg, p < 0.05) and STZ rats (18.3 +/- 0.9 vs 27.2 +/- 2.6 mmHg, p < 0.05), suggesting the release of a vasodilator prostaglandin. Remotion of the endothelium did not affect this response, indicating that prostaglandin was released from vascular smooth muscle. The response to phenylephrine was reduced in STZ rats compared to ND rats (2.3 [1.6-3.8] vs 8.3 [3.5-19.4], ED50. [IC 95%]) and was not modified by removal of the endothelium or by perfusion of L-nitro-arginine (50 microM). In contrast, indomethacin was able to reduce the response to phenylephrine in ND but not in STZ rats (2.3 [1.6-3.8] vs 4.7 [3.2-6.0], ED50. [IC 95%], p=0.02), suggesting that the blunted response to phenylephrine observed in STZ was due to the abolition of the release of prostaglandin by vascular smooth muscle. In conclusion, experimental diabetes induction in the rat is followed by a reduction of the contractile effect of phenylephrine due to the lack of release of a vasoconstrictor prostaglandin from vascular smooth muscle.  相似文献

We examined habitat associations of the endemic long-tailed wood-partridge (Dendrortyx macroura) at the macrohabitat and microhabitat levels in a Mexican temperate forest managed for timber production. To determine what vegetation associations were used more frequently than expected, we used a map depicting the spatial distribution of eight associations and estimated relative abundances of the wood-partridge. We also measured vegetation and microhabitat variables within each association to evaluate the relationship between the wood-partridge relative abundance and these variables. The average number of long-tailed wood-partridges detected was 0.31±0.03 individuals per point count. The wood-partridge was detected in the eight sampled vegetation associations, with average relative abundance estimates ranging from 0.29±0.18 to 3.38±1.07 individuals. The highest relative abundance was found in the Pinus pseudostrobus–Ternstroemia pringlei association, which was also the association most used than expected by the wood-partridge relative to its availability. A habitat use gradient (HUG) was identified by canonical correspondence analysis (CCA), showing that altitude, canopy tree cover, litter cover, and relief correlate significantly with the distribution of six plant associations and the wood-partridge. The long-tailed wood-partridge reaches high abundances when values of those microhabitat variables are intermediate, and appears as a generalist in response to the distribution of the plant associations along the HUG. Our results suggest that in terms of relative abundance, not habitat quality, the P. pseudostrobus–T. pringlei association represents the most favorable habitat for the long-tailed wood-partridge in the study area. These results help describe the wood-partridge habitat associations for conservation purposes.  相似文献
