Question: Do traits of liana regeneration differ among secondary forest types of varying land‐use history and primary forest? Location: Eighty kilometers north of Manaus, Brazil. Methods: We compared plant functional traits and growth rates of liana regeneration (<1.7‐m length) among two secondary forest types and primary forest. Secondary forest types were: Vismia (on land formerly clear‐cut, used for pasture and intensively burned) and Cecropia (no pasture usage or intensive fires after clear‐cut). Results: A principal components analysis indicated that most of the primary forest species exhibited a similar habit and were characterized by short shoots and small, round leaves with low specific leaf area, whereas secondary forest species had a broad range of trait values. At the plot level, primary and secondary forest communities were separated mainly by plant length and leaf size. Plant size varied more within secondary than within primary forest plots. The two secondary forest types could not be separated based on the traits of liana regeneration. Relative growth rate (RGR) did not correlate significantly with any measured plant trait, except for a negative relation to initial length. RGR increased with decreasing canopy cover and was highest in Vismia forest plots. Conclusion: Plant functional traits of liana regeneration were more similar in the primary forest and differed substantially from secondary forests, yet canopy cover only partly explained the observed differences.  相似文献

IntroductionThe increased radioresistance of hypoxic cells compared to well-oxygenated cells is quantified by the oxygen enhancement ratio (OER). In this study we created a FLUKA Monte Carlo based tool for inclusion of both OER and relative biological effectiveness (RBE) in biologically weighted dose (ROWD) calculations in proton therapy and applied this to explore the impact of hypoxia.MethodsThe RBE-weighted dose was adapted for hypoxia by making RBE model parameters dependent on the OER, in addition to the linear energy transfer (LET). The OER depends on the partial oxygen pressure (pO2) and LET. To demonstrate model performance, calculations were done with spread-out Bragg peaks (SOBP) in water phantoms with pO2 ranging from strongly hypoxic to normoxic (0.01–30 mmHg) and with a head and neck cancer proton plan optimized with an RBE of 1.1 and pO2 estimated voxel-by-voxel using [18F]-EF5 PET. An RBE of 1.1 and the Rørvik RBE model were used for the ROWD calculations.ResultsThe SOBP in water had decreasing ROWD with decreasing pO2. In the plans accounting for oxygenation, the median target doses were approximately a factor 1.1 lower than the corresponding plans which did not consider the OER. Hypoxia adapted target ROWDs were considerably more heterogeneous than the RBE1.1-weighted doses.ConclusionWe realized a Monte Carlo based tool for calculating the ROWD. Read-in of patient pO2 and estimation of ROWD with flexibility in choice of RBE model was achieved, giving a tool that may be useful in future clinical applications of hypoxia-guided particle therapy.  相似文献

A non-destructive method for the relative growth quantification of algae or cyanobacteria in the culture has been developed. It is based on image analysis and does not require any special equipment. A two stage without replacement strategy is proposed for estimating the population mean of overlapping clusters of contacts of tuberculosis cases. This sampling strategy is an improvement over the two sampling strategies proposed by SINGH (1988). A numerical illustration is provided by taking two populations of tuberculosis contacts from New York City; the percentage gain in efficiency varies from 3.70 to 24.99. The proposed improved sampling strategy may be useful to other contagious diseases in the different fields of biomedical sciences or similar situations in other fields.  相似文献

Ranked set sampling (RSS) as suggested by McIntyre (1952) and developed by Takahasi and Wakimoto (1968) is used to estimate the ratio. It is proved that by using RSS method the efficiency of the estimator relative to the simple random sampling (SRS) method has increased. Computer simulated results are given.
