The Middle Miocene Marnoso-arenacea Formation at Deruta in the northern Apennines of Italy rests unconformably on an orogenic wedge adjacent to the Adriatic foredeep. Based on a detailed facies analysis, the succession reveals two genetically related depositional systems: a distal delta-fed sand-rich system and a more proximal fan-delta slope system. Petrographic data confirm the genetic relationship between the two depositional systems, with the fan-delta slope feeding the basinward sand-rich system. The Deruta depositional setting shows a multi-step sedimentary evolution controlled by tectonically induced relative sea-level changes. The first stage, corresponding to a sea-level rise, promoted deposition in a wedge-top basin of pebbly sand and sand lobes (delta-fed). The second stage, characterized by intense tectonic activity (uplift) and sea-level fall, promoted accumulation of a prograding fan-delta slope replacing the sand-rich lobes. This phase was dominated by mass failures and methanogenic cold seepages. During these two stages, the wedge-top basin was isolated from the adjacent foredeep. Only during the third stage was a connection established, with the development of a deep-sea fan in the foredeep, fed by a deltaic depositional system.  相似文献

There are only a few reports on the relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of thermal neutrons and 10B(n,α)7Li reactions either in vitro or in vivo. The data in this paper summarize almost all previously published in vitro data. Because only a few reactors are available for biomedical purposes, it is difficult to make a comparison of data from experiments using the same kind of radiation, and also to make a comparison of data from experiments using the different kinds of radiations. However, it is indispensable for boron neutron capture therapy to make a radiobiological analysis. More intensive study, including repair process and oxygen effect, is necessary for establishing the fundamental basis of the clinical application of boron neutron capture therapy.  相似文献

Summary In a series of laboratory experiments we examined the hypothesis that larvae of stream mayflies would respond to the presence of two different types of predators in such a way as to minimize their risk of being consumed by each. Positioning of larvae (whether they frequent the top, sides, or bottom of stones) of Baetis tricaudatus and Ephemerella subvaria was altered by the presence of predaceous stoneflies (Agnetina capitata) with a larger proportion of the population occurring on the upper surfaces, where the probability of encountering the predator was lowest. The presence of a benthivorous fish (Cottus bairdi) had no significant effects on positioning of the mayfly larvae. Lack of fish effects may reflect an inability of the mayflies to detect or respond to sculpins, or alternately may indicate that sculpins do not normally present a important predation risk for these mayflies. Failure of mayfly prey to account for fish predators when responding to the presence of stoneflies appcars to explain facilitation previously observed between stoneflies and sculpins.  相似文献

Meningitis has been a notifiable disease in the United Kingdom for some 70 years. Only in recent years, stimulated by the work of the Meningitis Trust, has there been a more general awareness of the geographical distribution of cases, with certain locations being more prone than others to episodic outbreaks of the disease. In this paper we consider weather conditions prior to major outbreaks of meningitis in Hereford and Worcester, and Cleveland and the northwest Midlands. Possible causal links to air quality and large temporal changes of relative humidity are found from analysis of case data. However, whilst the diagnostic studies reported are encouraging, an independent test of the relative humidity gradient criterion using independent data for Gloucester was not successful. It is clear that meteorological and air quality data actually of the area from which the disease is reported must be analysed more fully to sustain or overrule the hypothesis proposed. In addition, the need for further clinical research into the likelihood of disease triggers generated by atmospheric smoke, dust and moisture is identified.  相似文献

Limited germplasm and narrow genetic base in the past has hinders wider applicability of Stylosanthes in India. However, build up in Stylosanthes germplasm in recent years provided an opportunity to evaluate and use them under different agro-ecological situations preferably targeting drought tolerance. Rate reducing resistance (RRR) allo-tetraploid lines of S. scabra and diploid S. seabrana, a newly introduced species, observed well suited in hard and cracking soils under complete rainfed condition. Genotypes of S. scabra were more tolerant to drought over lines of other species as evidenced by high leaf thickness, more proline accumulation, contents of malondialdehyde (MDA), sugars, starch and chlorophyll and low carbon isotope discrimination (CID) values. Both in control and stress conditions, a positive relationship (r = 0.465 and 0.328) was observed between specific leaf area (SLA) and CID. Earlier reports have emphasized measurement of CID as an indirect way of measuring the transpiration efficiency (TE) in Stylosanthes (Thumma et al. Aust J Agr Res 49:1039–1045, 1998). The negative relationship observed between TE and CID suggested low CID bearing lines would have high TE, useful traits to select lines growing better in dry environments. Thus, selected lines having low CID provided better scope for the introduction of this important range legume for semi- arid regions of India.  相似文献

Scarce information is available on the biological reasons why a small subset of introduced species can effectively establish within novel ecosystems. A comparison of early growth traits can help to explain the better performance of alien invasive species versus native co-occurring species. In one year-long experiment, we compared the early life stages of Ampelodesmos mauritanicus (Poir.) Dur. & Schinz (Amp), a native perennial Mediterranean grass, and Pennisetum setaceum (Forssk.) Chiov (Penn), an emerging invader grass in sub-arid and Mediterranean-climate areas. The Penn seedlings grew significantly faster and were approximately 2.5 times taller than the Amp seedlings, reaching a final average height of 90 cm. The shoot and root dry masses of the Penn seedlings were, respectively, more than 14 times and 4 times higher than those of the Amp seedlings. As a consequence, the shoot:root ratio was significantly higher in Penn, which resulted in a greater allocation of resources to the photosynthetic organs. Penn showed a more rapid life cycle compared with Amp. Penn produced seeds 9 months after sowing while no spikelet was produced by Amp until the end of the experiment. As a consequence, Penn may gain a reproductive advantage due to rapid seed dissemination. Ultimately, a suite of peculiar early growth traits makes Penn an aggressive competitor against Amp, which is an important floristic element of native Mediterranean grasslands. Penn seems better suited than Amp in colonizing frequently disturbed sites with fluctuating resource availability or irregular rainfall distribution and Penn is gradually replacing Amp.  相似文献

This study analysed seasonal dynamics of macrophyte abundance in two perennial lowland regulated streams (Stream 1 and 2) in the Danube basin (Slovakia). Assessments of macrophyte abundance and environmental characteristics were accomplished 7 times during the vegetation period in 2005 within a 100 m long section. Statistically significant differences in total abundance of macrophytes as well as an abundance of macrophyte groups (hydrophytes, amphiphytes, helophytes) and Potamogeton nodosus were detected among months within the vegetation period. Abundance fluctuations for individual macrophyte groups and species were moderate in Stream 1 and much stronger in Stream 2. Only amphiphytes showed bimodal temporal distribution in Stream 1, but the abundance of this group was low, reflecting more or less random occurrence of species in vegetation period. Multiple linear regression revealed that water depths and air temperature are the most significant environmental variables affecting the seasonal pattern of total as well as dominating group abundance in Stream 1 and 2, respectively. In all cases, abundances are significantly influenced by the abundance of the respective group in the preceding month. Culmination time differed between streams for all macrophyte groups except helophytes. Total abundance culminated 0.57 month later in the Stream 1 compared to Stream 2.  相似文献

Current strategies for marine pollution monitoring are based on the integration of chemical and biological techniques. The sea urchin embryo-larval bioassays are among the biological methods most widely used worldwide. Cryopreservation of early embryos of sea urchins could provide a useful tool to overcome one of the main limitations of such bioassays, the availability of high quality biological material all year round. The present study aimed to determine the suitability of several permeant (dimethyl sulfoxide, Me2SO; propylene glycol, PG; and ethylene glycol, EG) and non-permeant (trehalose, TRE; polyvinylpyrrolidone, PVP) cryoprotectant agents (CPAs) and their combination, for the cryopreservation of eggs and embryos of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus. On the basis of the CPAs toxicity, PG and EG, in combination with PVP, seem to be most suitable for the cryopreservation of P. lividus eggs and embryos. Several freezing procedures were also assayed. The most successful freezing regime consisted on cooling from 4 to −12 °C at 1 °C/min, holding for 2 min for seeding, cooling to −20 °C at 0.5 °C/min, and then cooling to −35 °C at 1 °C/min. Maximum normal larvae percentages of 41.5% and 68.5%, and maximum larval growth values of 42.9% and 60.5%, were obtained for frozen fertilized eggs and frozen blastulae, respectively.  相似文献

Ranked set sampling (RSS) as suggested by McIntyre (1952) may be modified to introduced a new sampling method called pair rank set sampling (PRSS), which might be used in some area of application instead of the RSS to increase the efficiency of the estimators relative to the simple random sampling (SRS) method. The effects of soil-water salinity on growth and photosynthesis of three coastal dune plants were examined by salt-treatment in order to clarify the causal relationship between salinity and plant distribution in a dune habitat. Plants were cultivated hydroponically at three salinity levels: 0, 10 and 100 mM NaCl. With the 100 mM salt treatment,Calystegia soldanella (C3 species) had the highest relative growth rate (RGR) (0.085 g g−1 d−1), followed byCarex kobomugi (C3) (0.066), andIschaemum anthephoroides (C4) (0.060). This order coincides with the distribution pattern of the three species on coastal dunes;Calystegia soldanella is generally distributed in more seaward areas whereasI. anthephoroides occurs further inland. The order of RGR was determined exclusively by leaf area ratio (LAR) among the three species. Due to its C4 pathway,I. anthephoroides had higher net photosynthetic rate (Pn) and net assimilation rate (NAR) than the two C3 plants at all NaCl concentrations, despite its low RGR. This apparent discrepancy is explainable by differences of LAR among the three species; LAR ofI. anthephoroides was lowest, and about half that ofCalystegia soldanella. These results suggest that LAR is one of the main determinants of salt tolerance based on RGR, whereas Pn or NAR may not be significant.
