Abstract. Plant functional types (PFTs) bridge the gap between plant physiology and community and ecosystem processes, thus providing a powerful tool in climate change research. We aimed at identifying PFTs within the flora of central-western Argentina, and to explore their possible consequences for ecosystem function. We analyzed 24 vegetative and regenerative traits of the 100 most abundant species along a steep climatic gradient. Based on plant traits and standard multivariate techniques, we identified eight PFTs. Our results confirmed, over a wide range of climatic conditions, the occurrence of broad recurrent patterns of association among plant traits reported for other floras; namely trade-offs between high investment in photosynthesis and growth on the one hand, and preferential allocation to storage and defence on the other. Regenerative traits were only partially coupled with vegetative traits. Using easily-measured plant traits and individual species cover in 63 sites, we predicted main community-ecosystem processes along the regional gradient. We hypothesized likely impacts of global climatic change on PFTs and ecosystems in situ, and analysed their probabilities of migrating in response to changing climatic conditions. Finally, we discuss the advantages and limitations of this kind of approach in predicting changes in plant distribution and in ecosystem processes over the next century. 相似文献

Primary biodiversity data constitute observations of particular species at given points in time and space. Open‐access electronic databases provide unprecedented access to these data, but their usefulness in characterizing species distributions and patterns in biodiversity depend on how complete species inventories are at a given survey location and how uniformly distributed survey locations are along dimensions of time, space, and environment. Our aim was to compare completeness and coverage among three open‐access databases representing ten taxonomic groups (amphibians, birds, freshwater bivalves, crayfish, freshwater fish, fungi, insects, mammals, plants, and reptiles) in the contiguous United States. We compiled occurrence records from the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), the North American Breeding Bird Survey (BBS), and federally administered fish surveys (FFS). We aggregated occurrence records by 0.1° × 0.1° grid cells and computed three completeness metrics to classify each grid cell as well‐surveyed or not. Next, we compared frequency distributions of surveyed grid cells to background environmental conditions in a GIS and performed Kolmogorov–Smirnov tests to quantify coverage through time, along two spatial gradients, and along eight environmental gradients. The three databases contributed >13.6 million reliable occurrence records distributed among >190,000 grid cells. The percent of well‐surveyed grid cells was substantially lower for GBIF (5.2%) than for systematic surveys (BBS and FFS; 82.5%). Still, the large number of GBIF occurrence records produced at least 250 well‐surveyed grid cells for six of nine taxonomic groups. Coverages of systematic surveys were less biased across spatial and environmental dimensions but were more biased in temporal coverage compared to GBIF data. GBIF coverages also varied among taxonomic groups, consistent with commonly recognized geographic, environmental, and institutional sampling biases. This comprehensive assessment of biodiversity data across the contiguous United States provides a prioritization scheme to fill in the gaps by contributing existing occurrence records to the public domain and planning future surveys. 相似文献

Summary
Triatoma bugs turn away from a vertical black stripe on the inner surface of a rotating or oscillating drum by keeping it in the lateral visual field at an angle relative to the long axis of the body. The value of depends on the angular velocity w of the drum. Below w=5° s–1, increases with increasing w, and the stripe can lie to either side of the animal. Occasionally, the bugs switch between these two tracking modes. Above w=5° s–1, remains nearly constant at about 120° and the stripe lags behind the animal. We call this lateral tracking. At velocities over 5° s–1 the animals track the leading edge of a wide black stripe in the same manner as they track a narrow stripe. Below 5° s–1 they walk towards the centre of the stripe (skototaxis). Objects moving towards the insect above the horizon are also fixated at an angle of about 120°. Lateral tracking is mediated mainly by the dorsal part of the visual field, as can be shown by occluding either the dorsal or ventral halves of the eyes. The walking speed of the bugs increases significantly during lateral tracking of an oscillating stripe compared with that during frontal fixation of a stationary one. Regional Cerebral Glucose Utilization During Hyperglycemia 总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
Previous data indicate that regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) decreases during acute and chronic hyperglycemia. To test the hypothesis that the decrease in rCBF is secondary to a decrease in cerebral metabolic rate, the rate of regional cerebral glucose utilization (rCMRgl) was measured in awake-restrained rats during acute and chronic hyperglycemia. Acute hyperglycemia was produced by intraperitoneal injection of glucose, and chronic hyperglycemia was produced by treatment with streptozotocin. The rCMRgl was measured over a 10-min period using [6-14C]glucose. Glucose utilization was normal during acute hyperglycemia but decreased by 13% following 3 weeks of chronic hyperglycemia. The absence of a decrease in rCMRgl measured during acute hyperglycemia indicates that decreased rCBF cannot be explained by a change in the metabolic rate of the brain. The decrease in rCMRgl measured during chronic hyperglycemia does not necessarily indicate the presence of a drop in the metabolic rate of the brain because ketone bodies are available as an alternate fuel for oxidative metabolism. Therefore, it is unlikely that the decrease in rCMRgl measured during chronic hyperglycemia accounts for decreased rCBF. 相似文献

Regional cerebral glucose utilization was measured using [2-14C]glucose in rats with an end-to-side portacaval anastomosis. The experiments were conducted in two groups of rats 4 to 8 weeks after portacaval shunting was established. One group was paralyzed and given N2O:O2 (70:30), whereas the other was conscious, unstressed, and unaware of the experiment. In both groups the rate of glucose utilization was decreased in almost all brain structures by an average of 20% after portacaval shunting. The results showed definitively that cerebral energy metabolism was reduced at a time when there were no obvious neurological abnormalities. 相似文献

Irreversible Binding of [3 H]Flunitrazepam to Different Proteins in Various Brain Regions 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Irreversible photolabeling by [3H]flunitrazepam of four proteins with apparent molecular weights 51,000 (P51), 53,000 (P53), 55,000 (P55), and 59,000 (P59) was investigated in various rat brain regions by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, fluorography, and quantitative determination of radioactivity bound to proteins. On maximal labeling of these proteins, only 15-25% of [3H]flunitrazepam reversibly bound to membranes becomes irreversibly attached to proteins. Results presented indicate that for every [3H]flunitrazepam molecule irreversibly bound to membranes, three molecules dissociate from reversible benzodiazepine binding sites. This seems to indicate that these proteins are either closely associated or identical with reversible benzodiazepine binding sites, and supports the hypothesis that four benzodiazepine binding sites are associated with one benzodiazepine receptor. When irreversible labeling profiles of proteins P51, P53, P55, and P59 were compared in different brain regions, it was found that labeling of individual proteins varied independently, supporting previous evidence that these proteins are associated with distinct benzodiazepine receptors. 相似文献

Abstract: The effects of chronic manganese chloride administration (1 mg MnCl2 4H2 O/ml of drinking water) and ageing on the regional distribution of monoamine oxidase (MAO, EC 1.4.3.4) were studied in 2-month- and 24–28-month-old rats. In both the control and Mn-treated rats, the serotonin oxidation (type A) rates decreased in hypothalamus, pons and medulla, striatum, midbrain and cerebral cortex, but not in cerebellum, in ageing. On the other hand the benzylamine oxidation (type B) rates in hypothalamus, striatum and cerebral cortex increased in ageing. In all regions except the cerebellum, there was a uniform decrease in the A/B ratio. This decrease was verified by differential inhibition studies using clorgyline and l -deprenyl, specific type A and type B inhibitors respectively. The dopamine-oxidising rates decreased in all regions, except the cerebral cortex and the cerebellum, in ageing control rats. This age-related decrease was not seen in the striatum and midbrain of manganese-treated rats. In these rats the other effect was an age-related increase in the rate of oxidation of all the amines in the cerebellum, not observed in control rats. These selective effects of manganese are only seen when comparing age-related changes in both groups of animals, since comparison of manganese-treated rats with age-matched controls showed a significant difference only in the rate of serotonin oxidation in the cerebellum of 2-month-old rats. The relationship of these observations to the effects of ageing and manganese encephalopathy on specific amine systems is discussed. 相似文献

Glutathione peroxidase activity was measured in 10 areas of perfused adult rat brain with the use of a fluorometric assay coupled to NADPH oxidation. The caudate-putamen and the substantia nigra had the highest activities. Cortical areas and several nuclear areas had somewhat lower activity. Activity was lowest in a white matter structure (corpus callosum). High activity of glutathione peroxidase may be related to the need to reduce hydrogen peroxide arising in the course of monoamine metabolism. 相似文献

Hepatic microsonal cytochrome P-450 levels are significantly decreased (46–68%) in ascorbic acid-deficient guinea pigs. Studies attempting to elucidate the mechanism responsible for decreased cytochrome P-450 demonstrated that ascorbic acid status did not influence the turnover or the degradation of hepatic cytochrome P-450 heme. Urinary excretion of Δ-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) and coproporphyrin was significantly decreased (30 and 69% respectively) in ascorbic acid-deficient guinea pigs. Injections (ip) of ALA into ascorbic acid-deficient guinea pigs were not effective in returning cytochrome P-450 levels to values found in ascorbic acid-supplemented guinea pigs. In addition, plasma and hepatic iron and blood heme were related directly, while hepatic copper and plasma copper or ceruloplasmin were related inversely, to the ascorbic-acid status of the guinea pig. These data, along with past investigations on heme synthesis in the ascorbic acid-deficient guinea pig, are consistent with mechanisms proposing that ascorbic acid may influence: 1) apocytochrome P-450 synthesis, 2) binding of heme and apo-cytochrome P-450 to form active cytochrome P-450, and/or 3) incorporation of Fe++ into the heme moiety of cytochrome P-450, perhaps via changes in copper metabolism. 相似文献
