Mechanical oscillation (vibration) is an osteogenic stimulus for bone in animal models and may hold promise as an anti-osteoporosis measure in humans with spinal cord injury (SCI). However, the level of reflex induced muscle contractions associated with various loads (g force) during limb segment oscillation is uncertain. The purpose of this study was to determine whether certain gravitational loads (g forces) at a fixed oscillation frequency (30 Hz) increases muscle reflex activity in individuals with and without SCI. Nine healthy subjects and two individuals with SCI sat with their hip and knee joints at 90° and the foot secured on an oscillation platform. Vertical mechanical oscillations were introduced at 0.3, 0.6, 1.2, 3 and 5g force for 20 s at 30 Hz. Non-SCI subjects received the oscillation with and without a 5% MVC background contraction. Peak soleus and tibialis anterior (TA) EMG were normalized to M-max. Soleus and TA EMG were <2.5% of M-max in both SCI and non-SCI subjects. The greatest EMG occurred at the highest acceleration (5g). Low magnitude mechanical oscillation, shown to enhance bone anabolism in animal models, did not elicit high levels of reflex muscle activity in individuals with and without SCI. These findings support the g force modulated background muscle activity during fixed frequency vibration. The magnitude of muscle activity was low and likely does not influence the load during fixed frequency oscillation of the tibia.  相似文献

The major recent advances in understanding the role of spinal neurons in generating movement include new information about the modulation of classic reflex pathways during fictive locomotion and in response to pharmacological probes. The possibility of understanding movements in terms of spinal representations of a basic set of movement primitives has been extended by the analysis of normal reflexes. Recordings of the activity of cervical interneurons in behaving monkeys has elucidated their contribution to generating voluntary movement and revealed their involvement in movement preparation.  相似文献

Objectives:We studied the effect of different vibration frequencies on spinal cord excitability and heat pain perception. We hypothesized that the effects of vibration on spinal cord reflexes, and, also those on heat pain perception, depend on vibration frequency.Methods:In 9 healthy subjects, we applied vibration over the tibialis anterior muscle at three different frequencies (50, 150, or 250 Hz) on spinal cord reflex excitably, tested with the H reflex and the T wave in the soleus muscle, as well as on sensory and pain perception, tested by measuring warm perception (WT) and heat pain perception thresholds, (HPT) in sites rostral and caudal to vibration. Exams were carried out before, during, and after vibration.Results:The amplitude of the H reflex and T wave significantly decreased during vibration in comparison to baseline. Low frequencies (50 and 150Hz) induced greater reflex suppression than high frequency (250Hz). No significant changes were observed on WT and HPT.Conclusions:The effects of vibratory stimulation can be summarized as frequency-related suppression of the spinal cord excitability without an effect on warm and heat pain perception. The present results may help to design vibration-related interventions intended to diminish spinal cord reflex excitability in spastic patients.  相似文献

Summary In locusts (Locusta migratoria) walking on a treadwheel, afferents of tarsal hair sensilla were stimulated via chronically implanted hook electrodes (Fig. 1). Stimuli applied to the middle leg tarsus elicited avoidance reflexes (Fig. 2). In quiescent animals, the leg was lifted off the ground and the femur adducted. In walking locusts, the response was phase-dependent. During the stance phase, no reaction was observed except occasional, premature triggering of swing movements; stimuli applied near the end of the swing phase were able to elicit an additional, short leg protraction.Central nervous correlates of phase-dependent reflex modulation were observed by recording intracellularly from motoneuron somata in walking animals. As a rule, motoneurons recruited during the swing phase showed excitatory stimulus-related responses around the end of the swing movement, correlated to the triggering of additional leg protractions (Figs. 3, 4, 5). Motoneurons active during the stance phase were often inhibited by tarsal stimulation, some showed only weak responses (Figs. 8, 9, 10). Common inhibitory motoneuron 1 was excited by tarsal stimulation during all phases of the leg movement (Figs. 6, 7). In one type of flexor tibiae motoneuron, a complex response pattern was observed, involving the inversion of stimulus-related synaptic potentials from excitatory, recorded during rest, to inhibitory, observed during long-lasting stance phases (Figs. 11, 12).The results demonstrate how reflex modulation is represented on the level of synaptic input to motoneurons. The processing of proprioceptive information from the exopodite-endopodite chordotonal organ in the tailfan of the crayfish Procambarus clarkii (Girard) is described. The chordotonal organ monitors relative movements of the exopodite about the endopodite. Displacement of the chordotonal strand elicits a burst of sensory spikes in root 3 of the terminal ganglion which are followed at a short and constant latency by excitatory postsynaptic potentials in interneurones. The afferents make excitatory monosynaptic connections with spiking and nonspiking local interneurones and intersegmental interneurones. No direct connections with motor neurones were found.Individual afferents make divergent patterns of connection onto different classes of interneurone. In turn, interneurones receive convergent inputs from some, but not all, chordotonal afferents. Ascending and spiking local interneurones receive inputs from afferents with velocity thresholds from 2–400°/s, while nonspiking interneurones receive inputs only from afferents with high velocity thresholds (200–400°/s).The reflex effects of chordotonal organ stimulation upon a number of uropod motor neurones are weak. Repetitive stimulation of the chordotonal organ at 850°/s produces a small reduction in the firing frequency of the reductor motor neurone. Injecting depolarizing current into ascending or non-spiking local interneurones that receive direct chordotonal input produces a similar inhibition.  相似文献

1. Mechanical or electrical stimulation of isolated sections of body wall produced contractions that were graded with the intensity of the stimulus. Injury of body wall with shallow incisions produced extremely persistent contractions. 2. Long-lasting contraction of isolated body wall was also produced by brief application of "stimulated body wall wash" (SBW), sea water which was first washed through another section of body wall subjected to intense mechanical or electrical stimulation. Contractions were produced by SBW diluted to concentrations as low as 1% of the initial concentration. Contractions produced by prolonged application of SBW showed little fatigue, tachyphylaxis, or desensitization. 3. SBW caused contraction of isolated sections of body wall from all regions of the body, including tail, parapodia, siphon, purple gland, rhinophores, and anterior tentacles. SBW also caused contraction of isolated lateral columellar muscle and of the gill. 4. 30 mM CoCl2 blocked the release of contractile factors into electrically stimulated body wall and reduced but did not abolish contractile responses of unstimulated body wall to perfused SBW. SBW contractions were unchanged by disconnection of the perfused tissue to the CNS. 5. Hemolymph collected from the neck of an intact donor following strong electrical stimulation of the tail or excision of a parapodium ('stimulated hemolymphh, SHL) caused long-lasting contractions which were larger than those produced by control hemolymph (CHL) collected prior to stimulation of the donor. 6. Similarities between body wall contractions produced by SHL and by SBW, including their occurrence in 30 mM CoCl2, suggest that some of the contractile activity in SHL may be directly released from traumatized body wall. 7. SHL caused significantly greater cardioacceleration of the isolated heart than did CHL. Similarities between the cardioacceleration produced by SHL and by SBW suggest that a source of cardiac activity in SHL may be traumatized body wall. 8. SBW suppressed the gill-withdrawal reflex when applied selectively to the sheathed or desheathed abdominal ganglion. SBW-induced suppression was associated with significant reduction of evoked spike activity in identified gill motor neurons. SHL collected 1-2 h after noxious stimulation caused weak but significant suppression of the gill-withdrawal reflex when applied to the fully sheathed abdominal ganglion.  相似文献

Ankle inversion sprains are the most frequent acute musculoskeletal injuries occurring in physical activity. Interventions that retrain muscle coordination have helped rehabilitate injured ankles, but it is unclear which muscle coordination strategies, if any, can prevent ankle sprains. The purpose of this study was to determine whether coordinated activity of the ankle muscles could prevent excessive ankle inversion during a simulated landing on a 30° incline. We used a set of musculoskeletal simulations to evaluate the efficacy of two strategies for coordinating the ankle evertor and invertor muscles during simulated landing scenarios: planned co-activation and stretch reflex activation with physiologic latency (60-ms delay). A full-body musculoskeletal model of landing was used to generate simulations of a subject dropping onto an inclined surface with each coordination condition. Within each condition, the intensity of evertor and invertor co-activity or stretch reflexes were varied systematically. The simulations revealed that strong preparatory co-activation of the ankle evertors and invertors prior to ground contact prevented ankle inversion from exceeding injury thresholds by rapidly generating eversion moments after initial contact. Conversely, stretch reflexes were too slow to generate eversion moments before the simulations reached the threshold for inversion injury. These results suggest that training interventions to protect the ankle should focus on stiffening the ankle with muscle co-activation prior to landing. BackgroundSpasticity and spastic dystonia are two separate phenomena of the upper motor neuron syndrome. Spasticity is clinically defined by velocity-dependent hypertonia and tendon jerk hyperreflexia due to the hyper-excitability of the stretch reflex. Spastic dystonia is the inability to relax a muscle leading to a spontaneous tonic contraction. Both spasticity and spastic dystonia are present in patients who are at rest; however, only patients with spasticity are actually able to kept their muscles relaxed prior to muscle stretch. The idea that has inspired the present work is that also in patients with spastic dystonia the stretch reflex is likely to be hyper-excitable. Therefore, velocity-dependent hypertonia could be mediated not only by spasticity, but also by spastic dystonia.MethodsTonic stretch reflexes in the rectus femoris muscle were evoked in 30 patients with multiple sclerosis showing velocity-dependent hypertonia of leg extensors and the habituation of the reflex was studied. Moreover, the capability of relax the muscle prior to muscle stretch (spastic dystonia) was also investigated.ResultsA tonic stretch reflex was evoked in all the enrolled patients. 73% of the patients were able to relax their rectus femoris muscle prior to stretch (spasticity). In the overwhelming majority of these patients, the tonic stretch reflex decreased during repeated stretches. In the remaining 27% of the subjects, the muscle was tonically activated prior to muscle stretch (spastic dystonia). In the patients in whom spastic dystonia progressively increased over the subsequent stretches (50% of the subjects with spastic dystonia), the habituation of the reflex was replaced by a progressive reflex facilitation.DiscussionThis study shows for the first time that velocity-dependent hypertonia can be caused by two distinct phenomena: spasticity and spastic dystonia. The habituation of the tonic stretch reflex, which is a typical feature of spasticity, is replaced by a reflex facilitation in the half of the subject with spastic dystonia. These preliminary findings suggest that differentiating the two types of velocity-dependent muscle hypertonia (spasticity and spastic dystonia) could be clinically relevant.  相似文献

In control, stability captures the reproducibility of motions and the robustness to environmental and internal perturbations. This paper examines how stability can be evaluated in human movements, and possible mechanisms by which humans ensure stability. First, a measure of stability is introduced, which is simple to apply to human movements and corresponds to Lyapunov exponents. Its application to real data shows that it is able to distinguish effectively between stable and unstable dynamics. A computational model is then used to investigate stability in human arm movements, which takes into account motor output variability and computes the force to perform a task according to an inverse dynamics model. Simulation results suggest that even a large time delay does not affect movement stability as long as the reflex feedback is small relative to muscle elasticity. Simulations are also used to demonstrate that existing learning schemes, using a monotonic antisymmetric update law, cannot compensate for unstable dynamics. An impedance compensation algorithm is introduced to learn unstable dynamics, which produces similar adaptation responses to those found in experiments.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to compare the muscle response times (MRTs) of select lower extremity muscles following a weight bearing rotary perturbation in single-leg stance with and without shoes. Ten recreationally active females volunteered for this study. Each subject received a rotary perturbation in single-leg stance under two conditions: with shoes and without shoes. The outcomes measured were response times of the medial and lateral quadriceps, hamstrings and gastrocnemius. The results demonstrated that significant differences in MRTs were not apparent for either the medial or lateral perturbation between conditions. While a main effect for muscle was evident for both medial and lateral perturbations, a muscle by shoe interaction was not present for either the medial or lateral perturbation. Our findings suggest that wearing shoes does not alter MRTs during single-limb rotary perturbations. These data indicate that lower extremity perturbation device testing may be done with or without shoes and comparisons between works are permissible as response times are unaffected.  相似文献
