1. The hypothesis that habitat fragmentation (biotic or abiotic) alters the transmission of disease within a population is explored using field data from a well-studied amphibian-pathogen system. 2. We used the Ambystoma tigrinum-A. tigrinum virus (ATV) model system to show how habitat fragmentation as a result of emergent vegetation and habitat management affects disease transmission dynamics in ponds across a landscape. 3. We quantified variation in ATV infection over time and across the landscape. ATV infection was significantly higher in ponds modified for livestock use (P = 0.032). Disease incidence decreased with increased amounts of emergent vegetation (P < 0.001). These factors appear to control disease transmission by altering the host contact rate and with it disease transmission. 4. A field experiment to test the effect of emergent vegetation on the distribution of larvae in ponds demonstrated a behavioural change in larvae found in sparsely vegetated ponds. Microhabitat choices resulted in larvae being concentrated at the pond edge resulting in a 'halo effect' in sparsely vegetated ponds, whereas larvae in heavily vegetated ponds were distributed more evenly throughout. Microhabitat choice affects the effective density that larvae experience. This 'halo effect' increases contact rates in the shallows of sparsely vegetated ponds and increases the transmission of a directly transmitted pathogen. 5. Despite recurrent epidemics of a lethal Ranavirus in tiger salamanders on the Kaibab Plateau, Arizona, USA, these populations persist. We discuss the implications of our results in the context of density-dependent transmission and homogeneous mixing, two increases key assumptions of epidemiological theory.  相似文献

Antioxidant activity (AOA) assay-guided chemical analysis, using a rat pancreas homogenate model, of aerial parts from Eysenhardtia subcoriacea, led to isolation of the new compound subcoriacin (3-(2'-hydroxy-4',5'-methylendioxyphenyl)-6-(3'-hydroxymethyl-4'-hydroxybut-2'-enyl)-7-hydroxycoumarin) together with the known substances: (+)-catechin, (-)-epicatechin, (+)-afzelechin, eriodictyol, (+)-catechin 3-O-beta-D-galactopyranoside and quercetin 3-O-beta-D-galactopyranoside as bioactive constituents. The structure of the compound was determined from 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic analyses. Additional known constituents were characterized. The bioactive compounds showed also moderate to strong radical scavenging properties against diphenylpicrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH). In addition, subcoriacin, (+)-catechin, (-)-epicatechin and (+)-afzelechin improved the reduced glutathione levels in rat pancreatic homogenate.  相似文献

对过氧化氢(H2O2)应激条件下产生的活性酵母衍生物(Live Yeast Cell Derivative,LYCD)进行了研究,结果表明:LYCD对细胞具有明显的促呼吸作用,其作用大小与制备LYCD过程中所加入的H2O2的刺激强度有关。另外,对LYCD中两种重要的抗氧剂-还原型谷胶甘肽(GSH)和超氧化物歧化酶(SOD)的测定分析结果显示:在H2O2的作用下,应激反应发生15min时,LY-CD中SOD的比活力最强,发生30min时,GSH的含量最高,不同的应激产物有各自产生的最佳时间。  相似文献

We consider the general properties of developing systems, the approaches to their modeling, and the question of their complexity. The notion “complex system” is vague; somewhat more distinct is the complexity of the model describing a phenomenon. We propose to discuss two pertinent issues. (i) The complexity of basic models is minimal; in other words, complicated basic models are needless. (ii) Living systems are simpler than inanimate ones. Though developing systems are seen in abiotic as well as in biotic nature, the fundamental difference is that living beings are capable of goal-setting and purposeful development; hence they can be described with simpler basic models.  相似文献

The complexation of reduced glutathione (GSH) in its free and Al(III)-bound species in acidic aqueous solutions was characterized by means of multi-analytical techniques: pH-potentiometry, multinuclear (1H, 13C and 27Al) and two-dimensional nuclear Overhauser enhancement NMR spectroscopy (1H, 1H-NOESY), electrospray mass spectroscopy (ESI-MS), and ab initio electronic structure calculations. The following results were found. In the 25 °C 0.1 M KCl and 37 °C 0.15 M NaCl ionic medium systems, Al3+ coordinates with the important biomolecule GSH through carboxylate groups to form various mononuclear 1:1 (AlHL, AlH2L and AlH−1L), 1:2 (AlL2) complexes, and dinuclear (Al2H5L2) species, where H4L+ denotes totally protonated GSH. Besides the monodentate complexes through carboxylate groups, the amino groups and the peptide bond imino and carbonyl groups may also be involved in binding with Al3+ in the bidentate and tridentate complexes. The present data reinforce that the glycine carboxylate group of GSH has a higher microscopic complex formation constant than γ-glutamyl carboxylate. Compared with simple amino acids, the tripeptide GSH displays a greater affinity for the Al3+ ion and thus may interfere with aluminum’s biological role more significantly.  相似文献

Habitat perturbations play a major role in shaping community structure; however, the elements of disturbance-related habitat change that affect diversity are not always apparent. This study examined the effects of habitat disturbances on species richness of coral reef fish assemblages using annual surveys of habitat and 210 fish species from 10 reefs on the Great Barrier Reef (GBR). Over a period of 11 years, major disturbances, including localised outbreaks of crown-of-thorns sea star (Acanthaster planci), severe storms or coral bleaching, resulted in coral decline of 46–96% in all the 10 reefs. Despite declines in coral cover, structural complexity of the reef framework was retained on five and species richness of coral reef fishes maintained on nine of the disturbed reefs. Extensive loss of coral resulted in localised declines of highly specialised coral-dependent species, but this loss of diversity was more than compensated for by increases in the number of species that feed on the epilithic algal matrix (EAM). A unimodal relationship between areal coral cover and species richness indicated species richness was greatest at approximately 20% coral cover declining by 3–4 species (6–8% of average richness) at higher and lower coral cover. Results revealed that declines in coral cover on reefs may have limited short-term impact on the diversity of coral reef fishes, though there may be fundamental changes in the community structure of fishes.  相似文献

Russian thistle or tumbleweed (Salsola tragus L.) is an introduced invasive weed in N. America. It is widely distributed in the US and is a target of biological control efforts.The fungus Colletotrichum gloeosporioides (Penz.) Penz. & Sacc. in Penz. f. sp. salsolae (CGS) is a facultative parasite under evaluation for classical biological control of this weed. Host-range tests were conducted with CGS in quarantine to determine whether the fungus is safe to release in N. America. Ninetytwo accessions were analyzed from 19 families: Aizoaceae, Alliaceae, Amaranthaceae, Apiaceae, Asteraceae, Brassicaceae, Cactaceae, Campanulaceae, Chenopodiaceae, Cucurbitaceae, Cupressaceae, Fabaceae, Malvaceae, Nyctaginaceae, Phytolaccaceae, Poaceae, Polygonaceae, Sarcobataceae, and Solanaceae and 10 tribes within the Chenopodiaceae: Atripliceae, Beteae, Camphorosmeae, Chenopodieae, Corispermeae, Halopepideae, Polycnemeae, Salicornieae, Salsoleae, and Suaedeae. These included 62 genera and 120 species. To facilitate interpretation of results, disease reaction data were combined with a relationship matrix derived from internal transcribed spacer DNA sequences and analyzed with mixed model equations to produce Best Linear Unbiased Predictors (BLUPs) for each species. Twenty-nine species (30 accessions) from seven closely-related Chenopodiaceae tribes had significant levels of disease severity as indicated by BLUPs, compared to six species determined to be susceptible with least squares means estimates. The 29 susceptible species were: 1 from Atripliceae, 4 from Camphorosmeae, 1 from Halopepideae, 2 from Polycnemeae, 6 from Salicornieae, 8 from Salsolae, and 7 from Suaedeae. Most species in the genus Salsola, which are all introduced and weedy, were very susceptible and damaged by CGS. Statistical comparisons and contrasts of BLUPs indicated that these Salsola species were significantly more susceptible than non-target species, including 15 species from relatives in the closely-related genera Bassia (=Kochia), Nitrophila, Salicornia, Sarcocornia, and Suaeda. Of the 29 susceptible species, 10 native or commercially important species in N. America were identified as needing additional tests to determine the extent of any damage caused by infection.  相似文献

The sciences of industrial ecology, complex systems, and adaptive management are intimately related, since they deal with flows and dynamic interdependencies between system elements of various kinds. As such, the tool kit of complex systems science could enrich our understanding of how industrial ecosystems might evolve over time. In this article, I illustrate how an important tool of complex systems science— agent-based simulation —can help to identify those potential elements of an industrial ecosystem that could work together to achieve more eco-efficient outcomes. For example, I show how agent-based simulation can generate cost-efficient energy futures in which groups of firms behave more eco-efficiently by introducing strategically located clusters of renewable, low-emissions, distributed generation. I then explain how role-playing games and participatory modeling can build trust and reduce conflict about the sharing of common-pool resources such as water and energy among small clusters of evolving agents. Collective learning can encourage potential industrial partners to gradually cooperate by exchanging by-products and/or sharing common infrastructure by dint of their close proximity. This kind of coevolutionary learning, aided by participatory modeling, could help to bring about industrial symbiosis.  相似文献

A method is presented that allows for a life cycle assessment (LCA) to provide environmental information on an energy infrastructure system while it evolves. Energy conversion facilities are represented in an agent-based model (ABM) as distinct instances of technologies with owners capable of making decisions based on economic and environmental information. This simulation setup allows us to explore the dynamics of assembly, disassembly, and use of these systems, which typically span decades, and to analyze the effect of using LCA information in decision making.
We were able to integrate a simplified LCA into an ABM by aligning and connecting the data structures that represent the energy infrastructure and the supply chains from source to sink. By using an appropriate database containing life cycle inventory (LCI) information and by solving the scaling factors for the technology matrix, we computed the contribution to global warming in terms of carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalents in the form of a single impact indicator for each instance of technology at each discrete simulation step. These LCAs may then serve to show each agent the impact of its activities at a global level, as indicated by its contribution to climate change. Similar to economic indicators, the LCA indicators may be fed back to the simulated decision making in the ABM to emulate the use of environmental information while the system evolves. A proof of concept was developed that is illustrated for a simplified LCA and ABM used to generate and simulate the evolution of a bioelectricity infrastructure system.  相似文献
