Question: Thorny shrubs play keystone roles in grazed ecosystems by defending non‐protected plants against herbivores, but their establishment in grazed ecosystems is poorly understood. Which factors control establishment of recruits of thorny nurse shrubs in grazed temperate woodlands? Location: Ancient grazed temperate woodlands (52°32′N, 6°36′E), The Netherlands. Methods: We surveyed biotic and abiotic factors for saplings of thorny nurse shrubs in plots with and without saplings. To disentangle these factors, we performed a transplantation experiment over two growing seasons with nurse shrub saplings (Prunus spinosa and Crataegus monogyna) planted in two dominant vegetation types – tall unpalatable swards and short grazed lawns – half of them protected from herbivory via exclosures. Results: Plots with shrub saplings had taller surrounding vegetation, higher soil pH and higher soil moisture than plots without saplings. These plots predominantly contained unpalatable sward species, while plots without saplings mainly contained palatable lawn species. After transplantation, sapling survival was higher in exclosures than in the open, and higher in sward exclosures than in lawn exclosures. Sapling growth was higher in swards than in lawns, higher inside than outside exclosures, and higher for Prunus than Crataegus, while browsing on saplings was higher in lawns. Conclusion: Unpalatable swards form essential establishment niches for thorny shrubs in grazed temperate woodlands: they protect against herbivores before thorns fully develop in saplings, and sapling growth is better due to improved micro‐environmental conditions. Once established and thorny, shrub saplings grow out of the protective range of the swards and in turn facilitate tree seedlings, which are essential for long‐term persistence of grazed temperate woodlands. This study shows that nurse plants may start as protégés before becoming facilitators for other plants in a later life stage. This may be common for nurse plants in various ecosystems. We argue that improved understanding of establishment of nurse plants and their constraining factors is crucial for effective conservation and restoration in various ecosystems.  相似文献

Evidence is presented for the binding of the quinone oxidation product of the monohydric phenol substrate, 4-hydroxyanisole, to mushroom tyrosinase. Column chromatography and SDS-PAGE separation showed labelling of the enzyme when incubated with 14C ring-labelled 4-hydroxyanisole. It is proposed that covalent binding to the enzyme and other proteins is through reaction of accessible nucleophilic groups, including thiols and amino groups, with the anisylquinone. This reductive addition enables the indirect generation of the catecholic substrate, which acts as an electron donor for the bicupric active site of met-tyrosinase and explains the lag kinetics of tyrosinase oxidation of non-cyclizing substrates. The effects of diluting the enzyme or the addition of amino acids on the lag period was consistent with a mechanism involving indirect generation of the dihydric phenol, which acts as the met-enzyme-recruiting substrate.  相似文献

The polychaete Arenicola marina is abundant and widespread on intertidal sand flats in K?nigshafen (island of Sylt, North Sea). Juveniles overwinter in subtidal channels and then colonize the upper tidal zone above the range of the adults. In the summers of 1995 and 1997, after a mild and a moderate winter, a distinct nursery belt fringing the shoreline was apparent. The severe winter of 1995/96 changed this pattern. Population size of the adults was halved, and in summer 1996 the juveniles were no longer restricted to an upper intertidal belt and settled over a wide range of tidal flats where adults were diminished. This spatial expansion of recruits is assumed to be a density-dependent response. An overcompensation by one-third of the previous population size did not carry over into the next year. Compared to some other species of the tidal-flat fauna, the disturbance effect by the severe winter on the lugworm population was small and brief. We quantified the intensity and duration of electromyograms (emgs) from the red and white axial muscles in five bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus) which performed three categories of behavior including steady swimming and burst and glide swimming at moderate and rapid speeds. Steady swimming (at 2 lengths/s) involved exclusively red muscle activity (mean posterior emg duration = 95 ms), whereas unsteady swimming utilized red and white fibers with two features of fiber type recruitment previously undescribed for any ectothermic vertebrate locomotor muscle. First, for moderate speed swimming, the timing of red and white activity differed significantly with the average onset time of white lagging behind that of red by approximately 40 ms. The durations of these white emgs were shorter than those of the red emgs (posterior mean = 82 ms) because offset times were effectively synchronous. Second, compared to steady and moderate speed unsteady swimming, the intensity of red activity during rapid unsteady swimming decreased while the intensity of white muscle activity (mean white emg duration = 33 ms) increased. Decreased red activity associated with increased white activity differs from the general pattern of vertebrate muscle recruitment in which faster fiber types are recruited in addition to, but not to the exclusion of, slower fiber types.  相似文献

Synopsis Acidification of the lakes of the La Cloche Mountains, Ontario, has reduced population densities of the yellow perch. Yellow perch of age groups 1 to 3 responded with increased rates of growth. Yellow perch of age groups 4 to 9 responded with reduced rates of growth. On the basis of these findings it is suggested that the growth rate of yellow perch may serve as a valuable indicator of environmental stress. Synopsis Field observations and collections indicate that the naked goby, Gobiosoma bosci, undergoes a near-bottom schooling phase prior to settlement. The size of these demersal larvae was intermediate between the sizes of larvae collected in plankton tows and of metamorphosed juveniles collected from the benthos. Two larvae that were captured unharmed quickly settled and metamorphosed. Otoliths of demersal larvae contained 20–41 daily increments. Most larvae were in schools made up of at least 25 individuals although single larvae were also seen. The dispersion pattern of demersal larvae was far more aggregated than that of recently settled juveniles indicating that larvae in schools probably do not settle to the benthos en masse.  相似文献

Abstract. Neither conventional niche theory nor current lottery models offer a satisfactory theoretical scope for modelling coexistence of species with disjoint generations. South-African fynbos and Australian kwongan include many species which are killed by, and recruit only after, fire. We propose a density-dependent lottery model which accommodates the unusual demographics of these species. We show that coexistence requires density dependence in recruitment. The result applies to a wider class of populations than the one considered here. It is applied to non-resprouting species in fynbos and kwongan. We show that the lottery assumption of recruitment in proportion to propagules is often satisfied, while the production of such propagules is often density-dependent, and we discuss some evidence of mechanisms whereby this may occur.  相似文献
