Predictions on the efficacy of marine reserves for benefiting fisheries differ in large part due to considerations of models of either intra- or inter-cohort population density regulating fish recruitment. Here, I consider both processes acting on recruitment and show using a bioeconomic model how for many fisheries density dependent recruitment dynamics interact with harvest costs to influence fishery profit with reserves. Reserves consolidate fishing effort, favoring fisheries that can profitably harvest low-density stocks of species where adult density mediates recruitment. Conversely, proportion coastline in reserves that maximizes profit, and relative improvement in profit from reserves over conventional management, decline with increasing harvest costs and the relative importance of intra-cohort density dependence. Reserves never increase profit when harvest cost is high, regardless of density dependent recruitment dynamics. I quantitatively synthesize diverse results in the literature, show disproportionate effects on the economic performance of reserves from considering only inter- or intra-cohort density dependence, and highlight fish population and fishery dynamics predicted to be complementary to reserve management. Understanding the relative importance of larval supply vs. post-settlement mortality underlies studies of marine invertebrate recruitment, yet is often hampered by researchers' inability to identify species among morphologically similar larvae or early juveniles. In New Zealand, two species of co-occurring intertidal mytilid mussels have morphologically indistinguishable settlers: the blue mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis, which is often numerically dominant in the mid-zone of the rocky intertidal, and the ribbed mussel Aulacomya atra maoriana which is often much less abundant. In this study, we obtained samples of newly settled mussels from 6 sample dates April-May 2005 from the rocky intertidal in Wellington Harbour, New Zealand. We used PCR-RFLP of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) mitochondrial gene region to identify settlers to species. Of a total of 224 settlers that could be identified, 64% were identified as Mytilus galloprovincialis and 36% as Aulocomya atra maoriana. The percentage of A. atra maoriana in the samples was unexpectedly high and ranged from 22–50% among the sample dates. This study reinforces the need to quantify larval supply at the species level to understand the relative importance of pre- and post-settlement mortality, and also demonstrates the usefulness of the COI region as a species-specific marker for identifying mussel larvae and juveniles.  相似文献

An element common to the recruitment communication of eusocial bees (honey bees, stingless bees and bumble bees) are pulsed thorax vibrations generated by successful foragers within the nest. In stingless bees, foragers vibrate during the unloading of the collected food. In the present study on Melipona seminigra we demonstrate that during trophallactic contacts, the food receivers are directly vibrated by the foragers. As a consequence, both the temporal structure and the main frequency component of the forager’s vibrations are directly passed on to the receiver. The vibrations are attenuated by about 17 dB on their way from the forager’s thorax (velocity amplitude of the vibrations: ∼70 mm/s) to the receiver’s thorax (∼10 mm/s), the main amount of attenuation (about 12 dB) occurring during transmission from the head of the forager to that of the receiver. Vibrations conducted through the substrate between the forager and food receiver are comparatively small with velocity amplitudes of 0.3 mm/s. Possible ways of perception and the advantages of vibration transmission by direct contact within the recruitment context are discussed.  相似文献

Radiotelemetry and unmarked occupancy modeling have been used to estimate animal population growth, but have not been compared for ungulates. We compared white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) population growth estimates from radiomarked individuals and occupancy modeling of unmarked individuals and evaluated advantages and disadvantages of each method. Estimates of population growth were obtained using remote camera (N = 54/year) detection/non-detection occupancy surveys of unmarked deer and from survival and recruitment data of radiomarked adult females (N = 87) and neonate fawns (N = 127) in a predominantly forested region of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, USA, 2009–2011. We hypothesized that occupancy models and radiotelemetry data would have similar population growth trends because both methods sampled the same temporally closed population. Percent changes in camera trap data generally reflected finite population growth (λ) of radiomarked deer which increased (λ = 1.10 ± 0.01) from 2009 to 2010, but decreased (λ = 0.87 ± 0.02) from 2010 to 2011. Also, unmarked adult female abundance and fawn:adult female ratios generally reflected trends in radiomarked deer survival and recruitment. Royle–Nichols occupancy model abundance estimates had wide confidence intervals, which may preclude using this method from accurately estimating deer population growth. Radiotelemetry provided more precise population growth estimates, while allowing collection of vital rates and location data. However, the Royle–Nichols occupancy model may be preferred to radiotelemetry because it reflected yearly variation in population growth with reduced labor and no invasive marking. Researchers should consider the objectives and logistics of their study when choosing a specific method.  相似文献

Summary In the northern Gulf of California the adult distribution of the intertidal barnacle species, Chthamalus anisopoma, on exposed shores is approximately between 0.0 and 2.0 m above mean low water (MLW). The species is typically absent in protected (from wave splash) areas. In this study, I examined a series of alternative hypotheses relating to the factors that could be responsible for limiting the distribution. Post-settlement factors appear to be unimportant because settlement was largely restricted to areas within the adult distribution. Two processes could account for the high correlation between settlement and adult distributions. First, hydrodynamic factors could restrict deposition of larvae to sites that coincidently were in areas in which individuals could survive to maturity. Second, larvae may choose to settle only on sites where they can survive to maturity. Of the two, the later was supported as settlement could be induced on surfaces outside the adult distribution using transplanted adult conspecifics as cues. Thus, competent larvae were present outside the adult distribution of Chthamalus zone but did not settle under normal conditions. Also, there was no evidence that pre-emption of space by other sessile species, by itself, restricted the distribution of Chthamalus. Settlement within the existing adult distribution may be an evolutionary response to increased mortality for individuals settling outside the adult distribution compared to those settling within it.  相似文献

The temperate annual goby,Sagamia geneionema, showed pronounced spatial variation in recruitment among 8 isolated sand patches within a 1-ha area at Aburatsubo, Miura Peninsula, central Japan. Investigations were conducted to determine if such among-patch variation stemmed from differences in patch attributes, including patch size, sediment grain size, food availability, and densities of predators and heterospecific residents. No relationship between recruit density and each of the 5 attributes measured was found, although among-patch variability in patch attributes was apparent. This result suggests that recruitment was not influenced by patch characteristics. The mechanisms that produce among-patch variation in recruitment may be explained in part, by the aggregating behavior of presettlement individuals in the water column above the sand patches.  相似文献

Habitat recognition and selection can greatly increase the early-life survival of sessile reef organisms. This study describes the settlement and recruitment responses of the fluted giant clam, Tridacna squamosa, to concrete tablets and tiles containing different concentrations of crustose coralline algae covered coral rubble (CCACR). Crustose coralline algae is known to induce settlement in a variety benthic animals, but it has not been used previously as an aggregate in concrete—potentially a way of encouraging colonization of man-made structures erected on or near coral reefs. After being given the choice of small tablets made with 0%, 30% or 60% CCACR for 4 days, 11 days old larvae preferred the substrate containing the most CCACR. Recruitment responses of juvenile clams to larger tiles made with the same three CCACR concentrations were also tested. These tiles were further divided into rough and smooth surface textures. After 6 weeks, more juvenile clams had recruited to the rough surfaced tiles than the smooth ones, but no significant differences among the CCACR treatments were found. Thus, even though concrete made with CCACR is initially attractive to larvae, it has no effect on recruitment of juvenile T. squamosa. Handling editor: I. Nagalkerken  相似文献

Our objective was to analyze which factors are critical for the dynamics of terrestrial Asplenium scolopendrium populations at the northern edge of its distribution. Therefore, a long-term study (1978–1999) on the performance and demography of this fern species has been carried out in three different forest stands (Picea sitchensis with Fagus sylvatica, P. sitchensis with thinning, and Fraxinus excelsior) in the Netherlands. We used the recorded demographic data to parameterize 37 transition matrices. The number of frost days in severe winters correlated closely with frond damage and resulted in increased mortality and retrogression. Landslip on the trench banks and intraspecific competition were also found to increase mortality. In the F. excelsior plot, plants grew faster and bigger, produced more fronds and formed a more closed fern cover than in the P. sitchensis stands, likely due to higher light levels. Life-table response experiments revealed that reproduction contributed greatly to the differences in projected population growth rates: reproduction was importantly higher in the F. excelsior and in the thinned P. sitchensis plots than in the P. sitchensisF. sylvatica plot. These differences can be attributed to an initial difference in light climate and to the accumulation of F. sylvatica litter which reduced recruitment. Recruitment occurred on bare soil but also in open moss carpets. We expect that the fern Asplenium scolopendrium will profit at its northern distribution edge when severe winters will occur less frequently, which is one of the expectations for global climate change.  相似文献
