Larval transport between Johnston Atoll and the Hawaiian Archipelago was examined using computer simulation and high-resolution ocean current data. The effects of pelagic larval duration and spawning seasonality on long-distance transport and local retention were examined using a Lagrangian, individual-based approach. Retention around Johnston Atoll appeared to be low, and there appeared to be seasonal effects on both retention and dispersal. Potential larval transport corridors between Johnston Atoll and the Hawaiian Archipelago were charted. One corridor connects Johnston Atoll with the middle portion of the Hawaiian Archipelago in the vicinity of French Frigate Shoals. Another corridor connects Johnston Atoll with the lower inhabited islands in the vicinity of Kauai. Transport appears to be related to the subtropical countercurrent and the Hawaiian Lee countercurrent, both located to the west of the archipelago and flowing to the east. A new analytical tool, termed CONREC–IRC is presented for the quantification of spatial patterns.  相似文献

Question: Accumulation of litter can have serious implications on the recruitment of plant species, by modifying the physical, biological and chemical features of the microenvironment or acting as a mechanical barrier for seeds and seedlings. Isolating these different effects has rarely been achieved experimentally. Location: Transylvanian Lowland, Romania. Methods: We tested the effects of different “litter” types on the germination of dry grassland species using a controlled pot experiment with three natural litter types, differing in decay state and composition (Stipa pulcherrima fresh leaves, partly decomposed leaves and mixed and partly decomposed plant material) and an artificial plastic litter, with two levels of water addition. As a complementary field study, seed sowing was conducted in grassland plots with litter removal and plastic litter application. Results: Litter effects were mainly positive (intermittent watering) or neutral (frequent watering) under controlled experimental conditions, and mostly negative in the field. Seed size and environmental conditions were the major determinants of litter effects on germination. Significant differences were found in the effect of litter type on germination, much of which could be explained by chemical factors determined by the decay state, as we confirmed a higher concentration of allelopathic compounds in fresh S. pulcherrima litter than in the senescing leaf litter. Conclusions: The effects of litter on seed germination are strongly context dependent, and it is hard to define common rules that apply consistently under various environmental conditions. “Litter” identity and quality matter, i.e. the litter composition and decay state, and influence seed germination.  相似文献

Here, I examine the potential for dead plant material, or wrack, to act as a vector of dispersal for plants among coastal marshes along the Palmer River in New England, USA. Three hundred mats of wrack floating along a 2.5 km section of river spanning tidal fresh, brackish and salt marshes were sampled for propagules of plants from May 1997 to October 1998. Thirty species of plants and 2 species of algae were associated with the wrack, and 24 of the plant species were viable under greenhouse conditions. Common and abundant species of tidal fresh, brackish and salt marshes were found in the wrack, as well as introduced and invasive species. Wrack contained plants suited to different modes of dispersal, including water, wind and adherence to animals. Measurements of the movement of individual mats of wrack along a 200 m section of the river indicated that wrack travelled at speeds ranging from 1.1 to 2.6 km h−1, which translates to potential dispersal distances ranging from 6.5 to 15.9 km for one ebb or flood tide of 6 h duration. Tagged mats of wrack tracked for one ebb or flood tide travelled at least 2.5 km along the river. These results suggest that wrack may be an important agent of plant dispersal among coastal marshes in estuaries.  相似文献

Sowing experiments were used to study seedling recruitment, growth and biomass allocation patterns in the perennial forest herbs Aconitum septentrionale and Actaea spicata in relation to the microbial soil community. Glucose and nutrients were added every second week over a 3-year period to manipulate soil microbial activity and nutrient availability. The glucose was added (400 g glucose m−2 yr−1) to reduce the nutrient availability to the plants by increasing soil microbial demands. A full nutrient solution was used to increase the nutrient availability. The experiments were performed in a deciduous forest and in an open field in South East Norway, and our study is based on a consecutive sampling of whole plants with intact root systems to be able to estimate growth and allocation patterns. Both species recruited best in the forest while their growth in the open field was ca. 100 times larger than in the forest. Shoot:root ratios were surprisingly similar in the forest and the open field sites and were only marginally affected by the glucose and nutrient treatments. However, the shoot:root ratios were characterised by highly significant seasonal variations. This was the case for both species and indicates that the shoot:root ratios were under strong ontogenetic control. Recruitment was negatively affected by glucose additions, in particular in the open field. Growth was significantly and negatively affected by glucose additions in the forest. Nutrient additions gave, as expected, a significant increase in growth. The failure of seedling recruitment and inferior growth following glucose additions support the assumption that the soil microbial community is an important determinant of plant recruitment and growth.  相似文献

The colonial ascidian Didemnum candidum (Savigny) is more abundant at shallow depths on floating docks than at greater depths along pilings in Pearl Harbor, Oahu, Hawaii. To compare the effects of selective settlement and postsettlement mortality on adult distribution, I determined if settlement was nonrandom relative to depth, if differences in adult abundance were responsible for the depth distribution of settlement, and if juvenile mortality varied with depth. A plankton pump was used to measure variation in larval abundance with depth. Acrylic settling plates were suspended at different depths and sampled nondestructively to measure settlement intensity and juvenile mortality. Settlement and mortality of the didemnid ascidians Diplosoma listerianum Milne-Edwards and Diplosoma sp. were also measured in the field and compared to that of D. candidum. Settlement of D. candidum was indeed nonrandom over depth. Both planktonic larvae and settled juvenils were more numerous at 0.5 than 3 or m. Settlement intensity on vertical plates was greatest within 1–2 cm of the water surface in the laboratory and within 2–3 cm in the field. Directly adjacent to the floating dock, where adults were equally abundant, settlement on horizontal plates was greater at shallow depths, suggesting directed movement of larvae upward. However, the ratio of settled juveniles to planktonic larvae (number of settlers: number of larvae) did not significantly differ with depth, suggesting that larvae were not more likely to settle at a particular depth. Settlement of the Diplosoma species was also heaviest near the surface. Juvenile mortality was greater at 0.5 than at 3 or 6 m for both D. candidum and the Diplosoma species. Experimental settlement showed that mortality, per se, of D. candidum was independent of depth. Rather, mortality was density-dependent, and the higher mortality near the surface was due to the greater number of larvae settling there. At this location, nonrandom settlement appears to determine the adult distribution of D. candidum, despite greater juvenile mortality at shallow depths. The pattern of settlement over depth is largely determined by adult proximity, rather than active larval behavior.  相似文献

Erosion and transport of juvenile individuals may alter the distribution pattern of intertidal bivalves. The burrowing success of recently transported juvenile softshell clams (Mya arenaria) was studied in a laboratory flume under a wide range of hydrosedimentary environments. Juvenile individuals (5-20 mm) were observed under a simulated 30 min slack tide before initiating the flow for a period of 60 min. Five different free-stream velocities (0, 3, 5, 10 and 24 cm s− 1) and four sediment types (mud, sandy-mud, sand and gravel) were used. The mean proportion of juvenile clams that initiated (MPI) or completed (MPC) a burial decreased with increasing shell length. Erosion from the sediment was more important in large juveniles suggesting that large juveniles may have more difficulty successfully relocating once transported. The MPI increased with increasing flow speed in experimental runs held at speed < 24 cm s− 1. This was observed in all sediment types. Most individuals were unable to burrow at 24 cm s− 1 because they got eroded. The MPC also increased with increasing flow speed in mud, sandy-mud and sand. The MPC's response to flow was more complex in gravel because of a shell length × flow speed interaction effect. Our observations suggest that water movement may induce the burrowing behaviour of recently eroded juvenile clams. Results are discussed in an ecological and aquacultural context.  相似文献

Question: How far can we simplify the fioristic complexity of a tropical rainforest into functional groups in order to predict tree population dynamics after logging‐induced disturbance? Location: Paracou experimental site, French Guiana. Methods: We used data from over 15 years in control and disturbed plots from a silvicultural trial started in 1984. We selected 53 common tree species assigned to five functional groups based on potential size and light requirement. For each species, we quantified: the fate, i.e. variation in population size, and dynamic processes, i.e. mortality, recruitment and growth, driving this fate. We investigated the links between dynamic processes, fate and functional groups. Results: Disturbance stimulated growth and recruitment for most species, but had a heterogeneous impact on mortality. Species fate in disturbed plots depended on recruitment and was more favourable than in control plots. The functional classification was more predictive for most separate dynamic processes than for species fate: after disturbance, significant differences were found between all functional groups for growth. Pioneer+heliophilous species showed significantly higher recruitment rates. Mortality of shade‐tolerant species slightly increased and of mid‐tolerant and heliophilous species decreased. Conclusions: A combination of three species classifications separately built from the growth, recruitment and mortality processes is more informative than a global classification combining the processes. Identifying the pioneer+heliophilous species on the basis of their growth rate is crucial to predict species fate after disturbance. We showed that potential growth rate could be used as a reliable indicator to identify this group.  相似文献

In patchy forest areas, the size of the forest patch where birds breed has a strong influence on their breeding success. However, the proximate effects contributing to lowering the breeding success in small forest patches remain unclear; and a shortage of crucial resources in those forest patches has been suggested to account in some degree for this failure. With the aim to further investigate this issue, we have monitored the breeding cycle of blue and great tits in three ‘large’ forest patches (ranging between 26.5 and 29.6 ha) and twelve ‘small’ forest patches (ranging between 1.1 and 2.1 ha) in a Mediterranean area in central Spain, during three years (2011–2013). We also recorded the nestling diet inside the nest-boxes with the aid of handy-cams. Only males significantly differed between forest patch size categories; being on average younger and with better body condition in small patches for great and blue tits respectively. Reproductive traits did not vary between forest patch size categories, but the body condition of blue tit nestlings and the size of great tit nestlings did, being significantly better and larger respectively in large forest patches. The recruitment rate of blue tit nestlings was also higher in large patches. Regarding nestling diet, blue tits did not differ but great tits did, delivering a larger amount of caterpillars in large forest patches. Most variation in the reproductive traits occurred between years, probably due to annual differences in environmental conditions. This study suggests that food supply could be limiting the breeding success of birds above all in small patches, but also in large patches under particular environmental conditions.  相似文献

Planktivory is believed to be a major selective force in marine systems, but little is known about how the intensity of planktivory risk varies spatially or temporally. We assessed seasonal daytime planktivory patterns over fifteen months (Apr 2003 to Jun 2004) at a temperate site in eastern Long Island Sound, CT. Planktivory was measured using modified Plankton Tethering Units (PTUs) deployed from floating docks and baited with live brine shrimp. Planktivory risk varied throughout the year. The highest levels of risk occurred in Aug, Sept and Oct (85%, 75% and 42.5% of brine shrimp consumed, respectively), the lowest levels of risk occurred from Dec to Apr. Mean monthly consumption of brine shrimp strongly correlated with the presence of planktivorous fish. Many species of benthic invertebrates exhibited high levels of recruitment during times of the year when planktivory risk was high, although some species recruited when planktivory risk was low. These seasonal planktivory patterns (highest risk occurring during the late summer and early fall) may be typical for many temperate near-shore habitats, especially those associated with man-made structures (e.g., floating docks, pilings).  相似文献
