Social groupings, population dynamics and population movements of animals all give rise to spatio-temporal variations in population levels. These variations may be of crucial importance when considering the spread of infectious diseases since infection levels do not increase unless there is a sufficient pool of susceptible individuals. This paper explores the impact of social groupings on the potential for an endemic disease to develop in a spatially explicit model system. Analysis of the model demonstrates that the explicit inclusion of space allows asymmetry between groups to arise when this was not possible in the equivalent spatially homogeneous system. Moreover, differences in movement behaviours for susceptible and infected individuals gives rise to different spatial profiles for the populations. These profiles were not observed in previous work on an epidemic system. The results are discussed in an ecological context with reference to furious and dumb strains of infectious diseases. 相似文献

A comparative study was carried out to see the differences in pathogenicity of rough and smooth strains. A total of 10 strains including 5 each of rough and smooth strains of Vibrio cholerae O1 were tested and found positive for toxin production by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in Richardson's and AKI media. All the smooth and rough strains, except one, showed a titre of 1: 10 and 1: 100 in Richardson's and AKI media, respectively. Both types of strains produced enterotoxin in rabbit ileal loop (RIL). The differences in multiplication abilities of smooth and rough strains in RIL were statistically significant (P <0.05). However, these differences in multiplying abilities did not influence the adherence potential or enterotoxin production as there was no significant difference (P >0.05) between these properties. An efficient transformation system for Campanula carpatica was developed using Agrobacterium tumefaciens strains LBA4404 (harbouring the plasmid pBI121), and AGL0 (harbouring the plasmid pBEO210). This is the first report on the transformation of C. carpatica. Various factors affecting the transformation efficiency and subsequent regeneration were identified. The age of seedlings from which the explants for transformation studies were taken, and the growth conditions under which the seedlings were grown had a significant influence on the production of transformed shoots. Hypocotyls taken from 12-day-old seedlings grown in the dark were the most productive, with up to 25% of hypocotyls producing transformed shoots. Explants taken from 5-week-old seedlings produced only transformed callus. The medium used for co-cultivation and incubation also had a significant influence on transformation frequency and shoot regeneration. The cultivar Blue Uniform was more responsive than White Uniform. Both bacterial strains and plasmids were equally effective in producing transformed tissue. The presence of 20% (v/v) ethanol triggers growth of insulin amyloid with distinct infrared spectroscopic features, compared with the fibrils obtained under ambient conditions. Here we report that the two insulin amyloid types behave in the prion strain-like manner regarding seeding specificity and ability of the self-propagating conformational template to overrule unfavorable environmental factors and maintain the initial folding pattern. The type of the original seed has been shown to prevail over cosolvent effects and determines spectral position and width of the amide I' infrared band of the heterogeneously seeded amyloid. Forty-one type and reference strains of Lactobacillus were evaluated using their randomly amplified polymorphic DNA band profiles. Developed bands for each strain were distinct and enabled discrimination. The best correlations were obtained applying the Pearson product moment correlation coefficient (r) together with the unweighted pair group method using arithmetic averages algorithm. All of the strains were clearly differentiated at and below the 72% similarity value. Ralstonia solanacearum biovar N2 strains isolated in Asia were compared by biochemical tests with biovar N2 strains from South America and biovar 2 (race 3) strains from Africa, America, Asia and Europe. Distinct differences were found between Asian and South American strains of biovar N2, and between Asian biovar N2 and biovar 2 strains with respect to their ability to utilize several carbon sources. Using cluster analysis based on repetitive sequence‐based polymerase chain reaction (rep‐PCR) genomic fingerprints, the Asian biovar N2 strains were divided into two groups, group 1 containing Japanese strains and group 2 containing Indonesian and Philippine strains. A set of 19 oxadiazolone (OX) derivatives have been investigated for their antimycobacterial activity against two pathogenic slow-growing mycobacteria, Mycobacterium marinum and Mycobacterium bovis BCG, and the avirulent Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tb) mc26230. The encouraging minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) values obtained prompted us to test them against virulent M. tb H37Rv growth either in broth medium or inside macrophages. The OX compounds displayed a diversity of action and were found to act either on extracellular M. tb growth only with moderated MIC50, or both intracellularly on infected macrophages as well as extracellularly on bacterial growth. Of interest, all OX derivatives exhibited very low toxicity towards host macrophages. Among the six potential OXs identified, HPOX, a selective inhibitor of extracellular M. tb growth, was selected and further used in a competitive labelling/enrichment assay against the activity-based probe Desthiobiotin-FP, in order to identify its putative target(s). This approach, combined with mass spectrometry, identified 18 potential candidates, all being serine or cysteine enzymes involved in M. tb lipid metabolism and/or in cell wall biosynthesis. Among them, Ag85A, CaeA, TesA, KasA and MetA have been reported as essential for in vitro growth of M. tb and/or its survival and persistence inside macrophages. Overall, our findings support the assumption that OX derivatives may represent a novel class of multi-target inhibitors leading to the arrest of M. tb growth through a cumulative inhibition of a large number of Ser- and Cys-containing enzymes involved in various important physiological processes. 相似文献

Seven different strains of Beauveria bassiana were used in a bioassay on Pieris rapae larvae. The results showed that an B. bassiana strain showed relatively high pathogenicity towards P. rapae larvae. The adjusted mortality rate was 92.86 %, and the infection rate was 85.71 % in 10 days post inoculation. Molecular identification was performed to identify the unknown strain. Internal Transcribed Spacer sequence analysis showed that the polymerase chain reaction amplicon length of the unknown strain of Beauveria sp. was 573 bp, and sequence similarity to the known B. bassiana sequences in the NCBI database was 99 %. The B. bassiana strain was named Bb01. The changes of proteins and PPO of P. rapae larvae infected by B. bassiana Bb01 strain at different times was determined. The activity of PPO increased in 1–6 d and decreased in 7 d again after inoculation. The B. bassiana invaded into the insect body affected the balance of the proteins and PPO. 相似文献
