Summary The early-formed xylem of Suaeda monoica Forssk. ex J. F. Gmel (Chenopodiaceae) is temporarily rayless. Vascular rays differentiate during later stages of its xylem ontogeny. The rays in Suaeda are heterogeneous, and some of them are aggregated. The mature xylem of this species is characterized by two unique types of vascular rays: (1) rays with several inside initiation centres of small cells formed by local frequent cell divisions in the cambium, and (2) huge xylem rays with radial phloem strands that are connected to the axial phloem. The spacing of the xylem rays is not even, and possible mechanisms controlling ray spacing are discussed. Our observations indicate that rays do not have an inhibitory zone around them in which ray initiation is prevented. The initiation of radial patterns of small cells which appear like inside rays within a large vascular ray suggests that initiation and spacing of rays is controlled by radial signal flows in relationship with axial signal fluxes.  相似文献

Linnaeus's artificial and natural arrangements of plants are examined using a Spearman rank coefficient (which is explained) on his presentations of his own and others' arrangements in the Classes plantarum and elsewhere. There is little alteration in his successive artificial arrangements. In contrast, between 1751 and 1764 his natural arrangements changed considerably, partly in the sequences of genera within orders but mostly by rearrangement of the orders. Comparison with Cesalpino's and Ray's natural arrangements, using the longest-recognized natural groups as signposts, suggests that Linnaeus in his latest natural arrangement (1764) approximated more closely to Ray's. Examination of Linnaeus's successive treatments of certain groups (palms, Zingiberaceae, Hydrocharis-Stratiotes-Vallisneria) and of Giseke's exposition of Linnaeus's lectures on natural groups (1792) shows that Linnaeus was much influenced by habitus and vegetative characters as well as those of the fructification. He recognized orders consisting of a chain of genera linked successively by overall affinity and without any single diagnostic character. Where possible, he preferred characters of the fructification and his ‘secret’ consulting of the habitus is explained as secondary to such characters. It is suggested that in his latest arrangement he approximated more to a scala naturae, as he probably did in zoology about the same time. Within his artificial arrangements Linnaeus kept to sequences of genera as natural as possible. He realized that some groups in his natural arrangements were still artificial, and his aphorism that all genera and species are natural, classes and orders part natural and part artificial, refers to his and others' practice until the natural system could be completed. It is not a statement of the essential natures of these ranks. Linnaeus's distinction in practice between natural and artificial arrangements was less clear-cut than Sachs believed. Linnaeus's rejection of the ancient tree/herb division was empirical, not a reasoned repudiation of an a priori grouping. The tree/herb division could be upheld in his day as obviously natural, not merely accepted on authority.  相似文献

Pre-matured florets of Benibana, a cultivar of saffron thistle (Carthamus tinctorius L.) was irradiated with UV-B (280–320 nm) or UV-C (254 nm) light for 48 h at 23±1 °C and the influence of UV-light on carthamin accumulation and floret elongation was investigated. UV-C light enhances carthamin accumulation most prominently, showing a specific value of 52.3 nmol carthamin·dm−3·h−1·25μm−2 (13.9 times of control), while it restricts floret elongation by a light-suppression manner (net elongation: 0.058 mm·h−1, one ninth of control). UV-B light is also promotive for the red colour appearance (25.0 nmol carthamin·dm−3·h−1·25 μm−2, 6.7 times of control) with suppressing floret elongation (net elongation: 0.17 mm·h−1, one third of control). Heterogeneous productivity of carthamin was seen in floret tissues after continuous treating under UV-C light. Carthamin accumulation, heterogeneous carthamin productivity and decrease of floret elongation restraint under UV-lights are discussed.  相似文献

Syconia (enclosed infructescences) infested with host-specific species of Schistonchus (Aphelenchoididae) were collected from six species of Ficus (Moraceae) native to Florida or Panama. They were sectioned and histologically examined to assess the effects of parasitism. Parasitism by Schistonchus spp. was associated with hypertrophied cells, tissue necrosis, and the presence of an exudate in all species. Occasional hypertrophy of the outer epidermal cells occurred on seed florets, wasp florets, and on the endothecial cells of male florets in F. aurea (subgenus Urostigma) from Florida. Aberrations of the inner mesocarp occurred under the hypertrophied cells on seed florets. In F. laevigata (subgenus Urostigma) from Florida, Schistonchus sp. infested immature male florets and was associated with hypertrophy of endothecial cells, epidermal cells of the anther filaments, and anthers. Schistonchus sp. also caused aberrations of the anther filament, anthers, and pollen. Ficus poponoei (subgenus Urostigma) and F. glabrata (subgenus Pharmacosycea), both from Panama, had hypertrophied outer epidermal cells on seed florets. Ficus poponoei also had Schistonchus sp. within the pedicel of an aborted floret, with hypertrophy of the cortical parenchyma. Ficus trigonata (subgenus Urostigma) from Panama had hypertrophy of the outer epidermis of seed florets. When the outer epidermis on these florets was missing, the inner mesocarp was hypertrophied. Ficus maxima (subgenus Pharmacosycea) from Panama had hypertrophy on the outer epidermis of seed and aborted florets. Schistonchus spp. were not found in wasp larvae or pupae in any of the Ficus spp. examined. Hypertrophy was never observed in the absence of Schistonchus spp.  相似文献

In recent years, the awareness of potential radiation damage of metal centers in protein crystals during crystallographic data collection has received increasing attention. The radiation damage can lead to radiation-induced changes and reduction of the metal sites. One of the research fields where these concerns have been comprehensively addressed is the study of the reaction intermediates of the heme peroxidase and oxygenase reaction cycles. For both the resting states and the high-valent intermediates, the X-rays used in the structure determination have given undesired side effects through radiation-induced changes to the trapped intermediates. However, X-rays have been used to generate and trap the peroxy/hydroperoxy state in crystals. In this review, the structural work and the influence of X-rays on these intermediates in myoglobin are summarized and viewed in light of analogous studies on similar intermediates in peroxidases and oxygenases.  相似文献

Selenium (Se) can provide unique biochemical and biological functions, and properties to macromolecules, including protein and RNA. Although Se has not yet been found in DNA, identification of the presence of Se in natural tRNAs has led to discovery of the naturally occurring 2-selenouridine and 5-[(methylamino)methyl]-2-selenouridine (mnm(5)se(2)U). The Se-atoms at C(2) of the modified uridines are introduced by 2-selenouridine synthase via displacement of the S-atoms in the corresponding 2-thiouridine nucleotides of the tRNAs, and selenophosphate is used as the Se donor. The research indicated that mnm(5)se(2)U is located at the first or wobble position of the anticodons in several bacterial tRNAs, including tRNA(Lys), tRNA(Glu), and tRNA(Gln). The 2-seleno functionality on this modified nucleotide probably improves the translation accuracy and/or efficiency. These observations in vivo suggest that the presence of Se can provide natural RNAs with useful properties to better function and survival. To further investigate the biochemical and structural properties of Se-derivatized nucleic acids (SeNA), we have pioneered chemical and enzymatic synthesis of Se-derivatized nucleic acids, and introduced Se into both RNA and DNA at a variety of positions by atom-specific replacement of oxygen. This review outlines the recent advancements in chemical and biochemical syntheses, and studies of SeNAs, and their potential applications in structural and functional investigation of nucleic acids and their protein complexes.  相似文献

The respiratory parameters and the membrane of liver mitochondria from rats treated with either hexachlorobenzene, iron or hexachlorobenzene plus iron, to induce experimental porphyria, have been studied. Partial uncoupling of oxidative phosphorylation has been observed in mitochondria from hexachlorobenzen- and hexachlorobenzene plus iron-treated rats. Direct evidence has been pressented that this uncoupling is due to the action of pentochlorophenol endogenously formed by metabolism of hexachlorobenzene. No irreversible damage of mitochondrial membrane has been revealed under both these conditions. Normal oxidative phosphorylation has bee found in mitochondria from rats treated with iron alone. In contrast, they presented an anomalous membrane potential, fully restored by oligomycin. A possible involvement of lipid peroxidation process, induced by iron, in causing these abnormalities has been suggested.  相似文献

A series of new acetohydrazone‐containing 1,2,4‐triazolo[1,5‐a]pyrimidine derivatives were designed and synthesized for the purpose of searching for novel agrochemicals with higher fungicidal activity. Their in vitro fungicidal activities against Rhizoctonia solani were evaluated, and the most promising compound, 2‐[(5,7‐dimethyl[1,2,4]triazolo[1,5‐a]pyrimidin‐2‐yl)sulfanyl]‐2′‐[(2‐hydroxyphenyl)methylidene]acetohydrazide ( 2‐17 ), showed a lower EC50 value (5.34 μg ml?1) than that of commercial carbendazim (EC50=7.62 μg ml?1). Additionally, compound 2‐17 was also found to display broad‐spectrum fungicidal activities, and its EC50 value (4.56 μg ml?1) against Botrytis cinereapers was very similar to that of carbendazim. Qualitative structure–activity relationships (QSARs) of the synthesized compounds were also discussed.  相似文献

Three tropane alkaloids, 1-3, were isolated from Erythroxylum caatingae, i.e., 6β-benzoyloxy-3α-[(4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxybenzoyl)oxy]tropane (1), a new tropane alkaloid, along with the known alkaloids 3α,6β-dibenzoyloxytropane (2) and 6β-benzoyloxy-3α-[(3,4,5-trimethoxybenzoyl)oxy]tropane (catuabine B; 3). Their structures were determined by 2D- ((1) H and (13) C) NMR. By LC/ESI-MS/MS analysis of the fractions of alkaloids 1-3, it was possible to detect five more alkaloids, 4-8, two of these, 4 and 8, possibly being new natural products. X-Ray crystallography of the chloride derivate of 1, i.e., 6β-benzoyloxy-3α-(4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxybenzoyloxy)tropane hydrochloride (1a) confirmed the structure of 1. Cytotoxicity was tested against the cell lines HEp-2, NCI-H292, and KB for the MeOH extract and alkaloid 3, and antitumor activity was tested against Sarcoma 180 only for the MeOH extract.  相似文献
