Pertya triloba (Asteraceae) is a perennial herb growing in the understory of deciduous broad-leaved forests in central Japan. Its capitulum consists of a single floret that differs from those of most other Asteraceae species. A bagging experiment clearly showed that breeding of P. triloba required cross-pollination. By using female fertility as a measure of pollination success, the effect of an attractive floral display on the threshold plant size for flowering in P. triloba was surveyed. The number of florets per plant in a P. triloba population was artificially adjusted between one and 30. In both control plants and experimental plants with adjusted floret number, the seed set increased with an increase in the number of florets per plant and became constant (60%) when the floret number per plant was more than 10. Thus, the number of florets per plant has an important role in attracting pollinators, and more than 10 florets per plant must be the effective floral display size. In the P. triloba population, 98.5% of the flowering plants had 10 or more flowers. The effective floral display size might be determined through the mutual relationship between plants and pollinators. The number of florets per plant increased with an increase in the plant leaf area. Therefore, the threshold plant size for flowering might be determined by the productivity needed to support an attractive floral display.  相似文献

Yield studies show that increases in grain yield are always accompanied by an increase in grain number and, hence, further increases in yield potential may require additional improvements in grain number. The improvement of modern durum wheat was mainly based on the introduction of semidwarf genes. A 2‐year field drought stress experiment, concerning two different genotype groups (landraces vs modern cultivars), was carried out under a rainout shelter in order (a) to assess the effect of water deficit on floret dynamics and grain number determination, (b) to explore the relationship between plant water status with grain number per spike and its components (i.e., spikelets per spike, fertile florets per spikelet and grain set) and (c) to quantify the importance of several plant traits in determining the final number of grains per spike and fertile florets per spike when the main source of variation is water availability. Compared to control (well irrigated), grain number per spike was reduced, depending on year, genotype and water availability level, by 12.4–58.7% and this reduction was evident almost in all spikelet positions along the spike. Although there were some doubts in the past about the increased sensitivity of semidwarf cultivars to drought stress, they were not confirmed from our results. In most of the cases, the variation in plant water status (by means of water potential index [WPI]) during floret primordia phase (FPP) explained most of the variance in grain number per spike, fertile florets per spikelet, grain set and fertile spikelets per spike. In general, increasing water stress intensity decreased grain number per spike by an average rate of 13.5 and 9.4 grains per 0.2 MPa decrease in WPI, in modern cultivars and landraces, respectively. However, seasonal and genotypic effects were evident by modifying the slopes of the linear regressions between WPI and the studied plant traits. Commonality analysis revealed that the number of fertile florets per spikelet was the best predictor of grain number per spike, indicating that there is still much space for further improvement for this trait in landraces. However, this trait has been clearly improved in modern cultivars, especially at the basal and central spikelets. Although the number of spikelets per spike was the best unique predictor of the number of grains per spike in modern cultivars, grain set presented the highest total effect.  相似文献

Because environmental stress can reduce crop growth and yield, the identification of genes that enhance agronomic traits is increasingly important. Previous screening of full-length cDNA overexpressing (FOX) rice lines revealed that OsTIFY11b, one of 20 TIFY proteins in rice, affects plant size, grain weight, and grain size. Therefore, we analyzed the effect of OsTIFY11b and nine other TIFY genes on the growth and yield of corresponding TIFY-FOX lines. Regardless of temperature, grain weight and culm length were enhanced in lines overexpressing TIFY11 subfamily genes, except OsTIFY11e. The TIFY-FOX plants exhibited increased floret number and reduced days to flowering, as well as reduced spikelet fertility, and OsTIFY10b, in particular, enhanced grain yield by minimizing decreases in fertility. We suggest that the enhanced growth of TIFY-transgenic rice is related to regulation of the jasmonate signaling pathway, as in Arabidopsis. Moreover, we discuss the potential application of TIFY overexpression for improving crop yield.  相似文献

A new hirsutane sesquiterpenoid, hirsutanol E (1), together with the known compounds hirsutanol A (2) and hirsutanol F (3; gloeosteretriol) were obtained from AcOEt extract of the marine fungus Chondrostereum sp., which was isolated from the soft coral Sarcophyton tortuosum. The structures were elucidated mainly on the basis of the NMR, MS, and X-ray single-crystal diffraction data. Hirsutanol A (2) exhibited potent cytotoxic activities against various cancer cell lines.  相似文献

The maintenance of flower size variation within populations might be explained by conflicting selection pressures on floral traits that may involve biological agents, such as mutualists and antagonists, and allocation costs associated with floral display. The annual species Madia sativa (Asteraceae) exhibits ample variation in the number of ray florets in natural populations. This field study aimed at evaluating the costs and benefits associated with floral traits in M. sativa. In particular, we addressed two main questions: (1) Is the number of ray florets positively associated with pollinator visitation rate? (2) Is there a fitness cost of ray floret maintenance when pollinators are absent? We detected one benefit of conspicuous ray capitula: a strong preference by insect pollinators. We also confirmed the occurrence of costs: when pollinators were excluded conspicuous ray capitula had a reduced reproductive assurance via autogamous selfing, and there were trade-offs between the number of ray florets and seed mass and seed germination. Results suggest that the maintenance of within-population variation in the number of ray florets in M. sativa is explained, at least in part, by the balance between costs and benefits associated with this floral trait.  相似文献

The fins of actinopterygian can regenerate following amputation. Classical papers have shown that the ray, a structural unit of these fins, might regenerate independent of this appendage. Each fin ray is formed by two apposed contralateral hemirays. A hemiray may autonomously regenerate and segmentate in a position-independent manner. This is observed when heterotopically grafted into an interray space, after amputation following extirpation of the contralateral hemiray or when simply ablated. During this process, a proliferating hemiblastema is formed, as shown by bromodeoxyuridine incorporation, from which the complete structure will regenerate. This hemiblastema shows a patterning of gene expression domain similar to half ray blastema. Interactions between contralateral hemiblastema have been studied by recombinant rays composed of hemirays from different origins on the proximo-distal or dorso-ventral axis of the caudal fin. Dye 1,1′-dioctadecyl-3,3,3′,3′-tetramethylindocarbocianine perchlorate labeling of grafted tissues was used as tissular marker. Our results suggest both that there are contralateral interactions between hemiblastema of each ray, and that hemiblastema may vary its morphogenesis, always differentiating as their host region. These non-autonomous, position-dependent interactions control coordinated bifurcations, segment joints and ray length independently. A morphological study of the developing and regenerating fin of another long fin mutant zebrafish suggests that contralateral hemiblastema interactions are perturbed in this mutant.  相似文献

The X-ray single-crystal structure of natural salidroside (=2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)ethyl beta-D-glucopyranoside; 1), isolated from Cistanche deserticola, is reported for the first time, as well as its absolute configuration. Differences in patterns of cell death between ray parenchyma cells and ray tracheids in the conifers Pinus densiflora and Pinus rigida were clarified. Differentiation and cell death of ray tracheids occurred successively and both were related to the distance from the cambium. In this respect, they resembled those of longitudinal tracheids. Thus, the cell death of short-lived ray tracheids could be characterized as time-dependent programmed cell death. In contrast, ray parenchyma cells survived for several years or more, and no successive cell death occurred, even within a single radial line of cells in a ray. Thus, the features of death of the ray parenchyma cells were different from those of ray tracheids. Cell death occurred early in ray parenchyma cells that were in contact with ray tracheids. The initiation of secondary wall thickening occurred earlier in ray parenchyma cells that were in contact with ray tracheids in Pinus densiflora than in others. In addition, localized thickening of secondary walls occurred only in ray parenchyma cells that were in contact with ray tracheids in Pinus rigida. Moreover, no polyphenols were evident in such cells in either species. Therefore, ray parenchyma cells that were in contact with ray tracheids appeared not to play a role in the formation of heartwood extractives. Our observations indicate that short-lived ray tracheids might affect the pattern of differentiation and, thus, the functions of neighboring long-lived ray parenchyma cells in conifers.  相似文献

Copper (Cu) metallothioneins are cuprous-thiolate proteins that contain multimetallic clusters, and are thought to have dual functions of Cu storage and Cu detoxification. We have used a combination of X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and density-functional theory (DFT) to investigate the nature of Cu binding to Saccharomyces cerevisiae metallothionein. We found that the XAS of metallothionein prepared, containing a full complement of Cu, was quantitatively consistent with the crystal structure, and that reconstitution of the apo-metallothionein with stoichiometric Cu results in the formation of a tetracopper cluster, indicating cooperative binding of the Cu ions by the metallothionein.  相似文献
