1. Latitudinal climatic conditions shape the length of the mating season and could thus influence reproductive traits. Knowledge of how animals behave along latitudinal clines will increase understanding of the impact of climate on sexual selection and might help in the prediction of whether peripheral populations will spread or shrink in response to changes in climate. 2. This study investigated variation in the mating efficiency of a temperate insect, the emerald damselfly Lestes sponsa, under semi‐natural field conditions along a latitudinal gradient covering three regions of the species' distribution: south, central and north. 3. A comparison was done of the proportion of copulating males, the proportion of males that formed tandems but did not copulate (unsuccessful males), and the proportion of males that did not attempt to form a tandem (passive males) in these three regions. 4. It was found that the proportion of copulations was significantly higher at northern latitudes than in the southern and central regions. Southern latitudes had a higher proportion of successful copulations compared with central latitudes. The northern region had a significantly lower frequency of passive males. The southern region had an intermediate proportion of passive males, and the central region had the highest proportion. The proportion of unsuccessful males did not differ between regions. The population density across sites did not affect these results. 5. The study shows that damselflies inhabiting northern populations mate more intensively than individuals from southern and central populations. The processes of local adaptation and ecological speciation can be better understood by studying the genetic background of life‐history decisions. The sex chromosomes host genes for many population differences in the Lepidoptera and therefore the inheritance of diapause determination in the butterfly Polygonia c‐album may be hypothesized to be sex‐linked. In the present study, Polygonia c‐album (L.) from Spain and Sweden and hybrid offspring are raised under an LD 17 : 7 h photocycle that induces most pure Swedish individuals to develop into the diapausing dark morph and most pure Spanish individuals into the light and directly‐developing morph. If inheritance of the daylength threshold for diapause is X‐linked, as is known to be the case for host‐plant preferences, females should follow the developmental path of their male parents' populations. However, female hybrids instead have a diapause propensity intermediate to that of their parental stocks and, consequentially, diapause determination is not X‐linked. However, male hybrids eclose as the diapausing morph to a higher extent than females and, moreover, this pattern is more pronounced in the Spanish female × Swedish male cross than in the reciprocal cross. Hence, it is concluded that the genetic determination of the critical daylength for diapause is mainly autosomal but with some influence of sex‐linked genes and/or parental effects, possibly as an effect of the importance of protandry for males. The breeding biology of great tits (Parus major) was studied in two forests of maritime pine (Pinus pinaster) on the west coast of Portugal, 200 km apart: Leiria (north) and Aposti?a (south). These two forests are located in a transition
zone between Atlantic climate in the north, and Mediterranean climate in the south. Breeding onset was, on average, in the
second and third week of March, which are the earliest records of breeding for this species. The southern population started
to breed earlier than the northern one and produced a larger first clutch, 8.3 and 7.4 eggs, respectively. Corresponding to
larger clutch sizes, we also found a higher first brood fledgling production in Aposti?a compared to Leiria, 6.1 and 5.4 fledglings,
respectively. However, the total number of fledglings produced per pair was higher in Leiria (8.3) than in Aposti?a (7.7),
due to higher productivity of second clutches (4.7 and 2.7 fledglings, respectively). Accordingly, the allocation of eggs
between successive breeding attempts was more equal in Leiria. Results are discussed in accordance to the different climatic
patterns in the two areas. It is suggested that the timing of breeding and different allocation of reproductive investment
between successive breeding attempts play an important role in optimizing breeding tactics in this facultative multiple-brooded

Aim To provide a greater understanding of the modern pollen rain for the central Andes region of South America, thus laying the groundwork for future pollen studies and the derivation of pollen‐climate transfer functions and response surfaces. Location Peru, Bolivia and Chile. Methods Standard palynological techniques for surface soil sampling and discriminant analysis. Results Statistical analysis of the 40 surface samples revealed four palynologically distinct assemblages: (1) the Yungas on the eastern slopes of the Andes; (2) the puna grasslands of the Altiplano; (3) the Coastal Deserts to the west of the Andes; and (4) the Southern Bolivian Highlands. Main conclusions The Yungas group is characterized by high percentages of Urticaceae/Moraceae pollen and fern spores along with trace amounts of pollen from common zoophilous lowland taxa such as Piperaceae, Bignoniaceae and Malpighiaceae. The puna assemblage of the Altiplano is characterized by the dominance of grass (Poaceae) in combination with moderate frequencies of Asteraceae pollen, which tend to increase slightly towards the southern (drier) locations of the Altiplano. Lower percentages of grass pollen and the greater prevalence of Asteraceae, Solanaceae, and the Chenopodiaceae/Amaranthaceae families define the coastal deserts to the west of the Andes. Long-term static leaching experiments were conducted to investigate characteristics of magnesium phosphate cement (MPC) solidified/stabilized Zn-contaminated soil under impact of acid rain. Effects of initial pH values of acid rain, binder agent types and compositions, as well as curing age on strength and leaching characteristics of the sample were analyzed. Standard sand was used as raw material, with the content of cement at 15%. Our study used two types of MPC with MgO/KH2PO4(M/P) ratio of 3:1 and 6:1 (respectively referred to as M3 and M6), and also ordinary Portland cement with content at 15% (referred to as C15) as test control. Experimental results show that acid rain with pH = 2 has the greatest weakening effect on unconfined compressive strength (qu) of the sample, while with pH = 4 and 7 such weakening effects on qu are similar. Research findings also indicate that M6 is the most effective in immobilizing Zn-spiked soils, M3 is next and C15 is the least. The effect of Zn2+ on hydration of MPC is much lower than that of C15. Precuring method can improve qu of the MPC-solidified samples and its resistance to acid rain. Compared with non-renewal, replacing acid rain leachant at designated intervals decreases qu of the sample. 相似文献
