Freezing of isolated spinach thylakoids in the presence of NaCl uncoupled photophosphorylation from electron flow and increased the permeability of the membranes to protons. Addition of ATP prior to freezing diminished membrane inactivation. On a molar basis, ATP was at least 100 times more effective in protecting thylakoids from freezing damage than low-molecularweight carbohydrates such as sucrose and glucose. The cryoprotective effectiveness of ATP was increased by Mg2+. In the absence of carbohydrates, preservation of thylakoids during freezing in 100 mM NaCl was saturated at about 1–2 mM ATP, but under these conditions membranes were not fully protected. However, in the presence of small amounts of sugars which did not significantly prevent thylakoid inactivation during freezing, ATP concentrations considerably lower than 0.5 mM caused nearly complete membrane protection. Neither ADP nor AMP could substitute for ATP. These findings indicate that cryoprotection by ATP cannot be explained by a colligative mechanism. It is suggested that ATP acts on the chloroplast coupling factor, either by modifying its conformation or by preventing its release from the membranes. The results are discussed in regard to freezing injury and resistance in vivo.Abbreviations CF1

We present a method by which it is possible to describe the binding of fatty acids to phospholipid bilayers. Binding constants for oleic acid and a number of fatty acids used as spectroscopic probes are deduced from electrophoresis measurements. There is a large shift in value for the fatty acids on binding to the phospholipid bilayers, consistent with stronger binding of the uncharged form of the fatty acid. For dansylundecanoic acid, fluorescence titrations are consistent with the binding constants derived from the electrophoresis experiments. For 12-(9-anthroyloxy)stearic acid, fluorescence and electrophoresis data are inconsistent, and we attribute this to quenching of fluorescence at high molar ratios of 12-anthroylstearic acid to phospholipid in the bilayer. 相似文献

Abstract.
- 1 The population dynamics of a natural population of Sympetrum danae (Sulzer) were studied, by means of a mark—release—recapture method, to find indications of dispersal by mature adults. Additional information on orientation and the influence of phenotype (including age), density and weather was obtained by observations under natural conditions and in a large outdoor field cage.
- 2 80% of all mature adults caught around the natural pond were estimated to be immigrants. Considerable immigration was confirmed by the abdomen length of unmarked matures which did not accord with that expected from the locally emerged population. Total numbers captured and the minimum number known to be alive fell sharply at the time when most individuals were mature. At the same time, new matures continued to enter and disappear from the study area at an increasing rate.
- 3 Dispersive behaviour (escape flights) in the field enclosure was primarily age dependent in both sexes: it occurred from an age of 25–30 days onwards. This coincides with the time-lag between the emergence peak and increased dispersal in the field. Secondary effects on escape flights suggested that males tended to abandon low density areas.
- 4 Males flew relatively more southward than females.

The survival statistics for chronic myelogenous leukemia patients are discussed in light of these extinction processes. Despite growing interest in the effects of landscape heterogeneity on genetic structuring, few tools are available to incorporate data on landscape composition into population genetic studies. Analyses of isolation by distance have typically either assumed spatial homogeneity for convenience or applied theoretically unjustified distance metrics to compensate for heterogeneity. Here I propose the isolation-by-resistance (IBR) model as an alternative for predicting equilibrium genetic structuring in complex landscapes. The model predicts a positive relationship between genetic differentiation and the resistance distance, a distance metric that exploits precise relationships between random walk times and effective resistances in electronic networks. As a predictor of genetic differentiation, the resistance distance is both more theoretically justified and more robust to spatial heterogeneity than Euclidean or least cost path-based distance measures. Moreover, the metric can be applied with a wide range of data inputs, including coarse-scale range maps, simple maps of habitat and nonhabitat within a species' range, or complex spatial datasets with habitats and barriers of differing qualities. The IBR model thus provides a flexible and efficient tool to account for habitat heterogeneity in studies of isolation by distance, improve understanding of how landscape characteristics affect genetic structuring, and predict genetic and evolutionary consequences of landscape change. 相似文献
