Empirical relationships are presented to estimate in fishes, asymptotic length (L∞) from maximum observed length (Lmax ), length at first maturity (Lm ) from L∞ , life span (tmax ) from age at first maturity (tm ), and length at maximum possible yield per recruit (Lopt ) from L∞ and from Lm , respectively. The age at Lopt is found to be a good indicator of generation time in fishes. A spreadsheet containing the various equations can be downloaded from the Internet at http://www.fishbase.org/download as popdynJFB.zip. A simple method is presented for evaluation of length–frequency data in their relationship to L∞ , Lm and Lopt . This can be used to evaluate the quality of the length–frequency sample and the status of the population. Gas exchange characteristics of leaves of Vitis vinifera L. cvs Tinta Amarela and Periquita, two grapevine cultivars grown in distinct climatic regions of Portugal, were studied under natural and controlled conditions. Daily time courses of gas exchange were measured on both a hot, sunny day and a cooler, partly cloudy day. Responses of net photosynthesis to irradiance and internal partial pressure of CO2 , were also obtained. A strong correlation between net photosynthesis (PN ) and leaf conductance (gs ) was found during the diurnal time courses of gas exchange, as well as a relatively constant internal partial pressure of CO2 (Pi ), even under non-steady-state conditions. On the cloudless day, both PN and gs were lower in the afternoon than in the morning, despite similar conditions of leaf temperature, air to leaf water vapor deficit and irradiance. The response curves of net photosynthesis to internal CO2 showed linearity up to pi values of 50 Pa, possibly indicating a substantial excess of photosynthetic capacity. When measured at low partial pressures of O2 (1 kPa), PN became inhibited at high CO2 levels. Inhibition of PN at high CO2 was absent under normal levels of O2 (21 kPa). Significant differences in gas exchange characteristics were found between the two cultivars, with T. Amarela having higher rates under similar measurement conditions. Summary A method for isolating high quality DNA from wholeEuglena cells is described. The procedure consists in: the weakening of the cell pellicle in glycerol avoiding the mechanical disruption of cells and shearing damage in DNA molecules; the decondensation ofEuglena compact chromatin directly inside the cells; the complete dissociation of cells and nucleoproteins in sarkosyl detergent; the optional digestion of proteins and RNA with DNase-free enzymes and the final purification of DNA by isopycnic banding in CsCl gradients. Degradation of DNA is prevented all along the extraction procedure by glycerol, antioxydants, EDTA and sarkosyl detergent. Using the enzymatic digestion step, DNA containing few single-stranded nicks is obtained with a yield approaching 100%. DNA with no single-stranded nick could be obtained with a 35% yield when the enzymatic digestion step was omitted. In both cases, the double-stranded DNA has an average molecular weight equal or greater than 6×107. It is free of contaminants and could be easily digested with restriction enzymes. After digestion with Eco RI and size-fractionation in agarose gel this DNA has permitted specific hybridization of the rDNA sequences with a radioactive rRNA probe.Abbreviations Kbp

128 fish species belonging to 54 families were collected from the mangroves of Pagbilao. Ambassis kopsi (Ambassidae) was the most abundant species.Fourteen environmental factors were correlated to the catch per unit time for some species. The occurrence of A. kopsi was positively correlated to nitrate in the water, carbon in the sediments and litter fall. Out of the 8 species investigated, 6 were positively correlated to litter fall. Three species showed positive correlation to phosphate in the water, two to organic carbon in the sediments, nitrate, silicate and pH, and one to salinity and carotenoids in water. Synopsis Young-of-the-year largemouth bass,Micropterus salmoides, were exposed to four concentrations of sulphuric acid (pH levels 7.2, 6.1, 4.8, and 3.7) for 30 days, and the frequencies of feeding acts and activity bouts, and time budgets were recorded. Juveniles at pH 6.1 and at pH 4.8 performed the two feeding acts, bites and orientations, more often, and spent more time feeding than bass at pH 7.2. Bass at pH 3.7, however, reduced feeding, and spent a significantly larger portion of their time hovering in the water column. Frequencies of comfort and agonistic acts increased with a decline in pH. Summary The diversity of two sympatrically distributed barley species (Hordeum vulgare L. and Hordeum spontaneum C. Koch.) has been assessed for 7 morphometric and 13 qualitative traits. Phenotypically, Hordeum vulgare was more stable than Hordeum spontaneum for all morphometric traits; this is a reflection of domestication and selection. The overall diversity indexes were 0.546±0.125 and 0.502±0.113 for Hordeum vulgare and Hordeum spontaneum, respectively (P=0.095). However, Hordeum spontaneum expressed a higher level of diversity for most qualitative traits. The observed similarity for a number of diversity indexes is probably due to gene flow between the two species. 相似文献

Recent reports have suggested that the obesity and hyperphagia of the genetically obese Zucker rat may be related to defective insulin action or binding in the hypothalamus. We used quantitative autoradiography to determine if insulin binding is altered in specific hypothalamic nuclei associated with food intake. Insulin binding was measured in the arcuate (ARC), dorsomedial (DMN), and ventromedial (VMN) hypothalamic nuclei of 3–4-month-old lean (Fa/Fa) and genetically obese (fa/fa) Zucker rats. A consistently reproducible 15% increase in the total specific binding of 0.1 nM [125I]-insulin was found in the ARC of the obese genotype. A slight increase in insulin binding in the DMN was also found. No difference in specific insulin binding was found between genotypes in the VMN. Nonlinear least squares analysis of competitive binding studies showed that the Kd of the ARC insulin binding site was 33% higher in the lean rats than in the obese rats, indicating an increased affinity for insulin. No difference in site number (Bmax) was found in the ARC, DMN or VMN, and no evidence was found for reduced insulin binding in the hypothalamus of the obese (fa/fa) genotype. The results suggest that hyperphagia and obesity of the obese (fa/fa) Zucker rat genotype may be associated with increased insulin binding in the arcuate nucleus. 相似文献
