During the first 7.5 years of breast cancer screening in South Australia, 88 radial scar/complex sclerosing lesions were among the mammographically detected abnormalities. A false-positive cytological diagnosis by fine needle biopsy was given in three of 69 such cases with satisfactory smears, a false-positive rate of 4.3% in this particular group. A review of the smears suggested that the false-positive diagnoses could have been avoided if a total or near total absence of a benign epithelial component had been included among the criteria for a malignant diagnosis. However, even after review, atypia was considered sufficiently worrying to be reported as a suspicion of malignancy in 7% of cases. 相似文献

This study has been carried out to assess the age from the pubic symphysial surface employing a multiple regression analysis and a quantification theory model I analysis. Using partial regression coefficients and/or normalized scores obtained from the analyses, ages of skeletal remains can be quantitatively estimated with a fairly high reliability. The use of this method is, however, limited to the samples between 18 and 38 years of age, because age changes in the symphysial surface show large variations after about 40 years. Age changes in the pubic symphyses of 142 Cayo Santiago rhesus monkeys (known age, sex and maternal genealogy) are described. Symphyseal development is sexually dimorphic. Males generate a ridge and furrow system which is gradually replaced by a solid ankylosis at the mid-sagittal plane. Female development parallels that of the male until puberty. With pregnancy and delivery, relaxation and reaggregation of pelvic ligaments binding the symphysis destroy the symphyseal face. Continued bearing of offspring inhibits mid-sagittal ankylosis. Limited estimates of skeletal age can be made by using symphyseal development as an indicator of senescence. 相似文献

The application of a photographic identification methodology using the unique ventral surface markings (natural spot patterns) of an observed population in southern Mozambique enabled many aspects of the reproductive ecology of reef manta rays Manta alfredi to be examined. The region encompassing the study site was identified as a mating ground for M. alfredi based on observations of mating events and fresh mating scars on females. The distribution of these pectoral fin scars was highly biased and indicated a strong lateralized behavioural trait, with 99% of these scars occurring only on the left pectoral fin. No other elasmobranch has been reported to display behavioural lateralization. The study region also acts as a birthing ground, with individuals typically giving birth in the austral summer period after a gestation of c. 1 year. Reproductive periodicity in M. alfredi was most commonly biennial, but a few individuals were pregnant in consecutive years, confirming an annual ovulatory cycle. The production of a single pup appears to be the normal situation, although observations in the wild as well as during opportunistic dissections of individuals killed by fisheries revealed that two pups are conceived on occasion. Many aspects of the study have contributed to the limited baseline data currently available for this species and have highlighted the potential need for more conservative conservation strategies. 相似文献

During pregnancy, an interpubic ligament is formed in the mouse pubic symphysis. In late stages, this ligament undergoes "relaxation" to allow proper delivery, which is expected on the 19th day. Proteoglycans and hyaluronic acid play an important role in the remodeling of the extracellular matrix in these tissues. Glycosaminoglycans and proteoglycans were studied by electron microscopic, immunohistochemical and biochemical methods in samples of mouse pubic symphysis from the 12th to 18th day of pregnancy. At the ultrastructural level, using cuprolinic blue and enzymatic digestion by chondroitin lyases, two types of proteoglycan filaments were observed in the fibrocartilage on the 12th day, as well as in D 15, D 17 and D 18 pubic ligaments. The only sulfated glycosaminoglycan in these filaments was chondroitin sulfate, as shown by chondroitin lyase treatment. Their electrophoretic mobility, before and after enzymatic degradation, corroborated this inference. The ratio of chondroitin sulfate/dry weight of symphysis showed two phases of increase: between D12 and D 15, and between D 17 and D 18. We suggest that the first corresponds mainly to an increase in decorin when the ligament is formed, and the second to versican, during "relaxation". Versican and hyaluronic acid, working as water holding molecules would be responsible for the hydration of the ligament at the end of pregnancy, allowing an increase in resiliency. The presence of hyaluronic acid was confirmed by labeling with HA-probe in the perichondrium, fibrocartilage and ligament. The role of collagen fibers as physical restrictors of the complete expansion of glycosaminoglycans and hyaluronic acid in tissue is discussed. 相似文献

Gut evolution in early Cambrian trilobites and the origin of predation on infaunal macroinvertebrates: evidence from muscle scars in Mesolenellus 下载免费PDF全文
Trilobites are particularly common Cambrian fossils, but their trophic impact on the rapidly evolving marine ecosystems of that time is difficult to assess, due to uncertainties on how diverse their feeding habits truly were. Gut anatomy might help to constrain inferences on trilobite feeding ecology, but preservation of digestive organs is exceedingly rare. Muscle scars on the glabella, known as ‘frontal auxiliary impressions’ (FAIs), have been interpreted as evidence of the evolution of a pouch‐like organ with powerful extrinsic muscles (i.e. a crop) in some trilobites. Here we describe FAIs in Mesolenellus hyperboreus from Cambrian Stage 4 strata of North Greenland, which represents the oldest example of such structures and their first report in the Suborder Olenellina. Mesolenellus FAIs suggest that the crop in trilobites was clearly differentiated from the rest of the digestive tract, and essentially located under a hypertrophied glabellar frontal lobe. Reviews of the digestive anatomy of trilobite sister‐taxa and the glabellar morphology of the oldest‐known trilobites suggest that the gut of the trilobite ancestor was an essentially simple tract (i.e. no well‐differentiated crop) flanked laterally by numerous midgut glands. A crop first evolved in the Cambrian in groups like olenelloids and (later) paradoxidoids. Using ichnological evidence, we hypothesize that the emergence of olenelloids yields evidence for the evolution of predatory inclinations in a group of arthropods originally dominated by surface‐deposit‐feeders. By allowing the exploitation of a rapidly developing food source, infaunal animals, the diversification of feeding strategies in trilobites might partially explain their unparalleled evolutionary success. 相似文献

Photographs of distinctively scarred manatees ( Trichechus manatus ) were taken at aggregation sites throughout Florida and assembled into a catalog for identifying individuals. Resightings of known manatees in different years or at different locations enabled us to document site fidelity and long-distance movements. Of the 891 individuals included in the catalog as of August 1986, 470 (53%) were resighted at least once. We documented 219 cases of seasonal returns to specific aggregation sites and 98 instances of movements between areas. Movements in excess of 820 km were documented for individuals on the east coast of Florida. Rapid movements south during early winter, as well as northerly spring movements, verify a seasonal migration pattern for many individuals along Florida's east coast. The wide-ranging migratory habits of manatees in Florida must be considered if meaningful management strategies are to be developed and implemented. 相似文献

Elasmobranch fishes exhibit a series of complex courtship and mating behaviours in which males inflict significant bite wounds to the body of female mates. However, the variety and frequency of mating wounds are not known across a full reproductive season for any species. We examined the distribution and abundance of dermal wounds in adult Atlantic stingrays, Dasyatis sabina, which have a protracted and defined mating season to determine (1) if dermal wounds can be used as indicators of mating activity, (2) whether different categories of bite wounds can be associated with specific mating behaviours, and (3) whether the skin thickness in females is sexually dimorphic. Adults of both sexes showed fresh wounds during the full duration of the mating season (October–June) and there was no relationship between ray size and wound density. Females had more total wounds than males in every month with a maximum average of 20.2 wounds per female in April. Mating wounds were categorized into five distinct forms: single track, double track, bite, margin abrasion and excision. Wounds were randomly distributed over the body of males but concentrated on the posterior half of the disc in females. Each wound type occurred in approximately equal proportions among sexes with the exception of the precopulatory and copulatory-induced margin abrasions which accounted for 13.7% of the total wounds in females but only 3.1% in males. We suggest that the pronounced and concurrent appearance of single track, double track and bite wounds among males results from random premating courtship attacks by males because females cannot be visually discriminated. However, the concentration of wounds on the posterior disc of females is consistent with the possible presence of olfactory cues (e.g. pheromones) that are released at the cloaca. The pectoral fin dermis of females was 50% thicker than that of males, which eliminated the excision of margins during male grasping and functions to reduce female injury. The temporal occurrence of wounds from October through June and peak in April is consistent with previous reproductive studies that show fresh sperm in the reproductive tract of females over the protracted mating period and also ovulation in late March or early April. The importance of social reproductive biting is discussed in relation to the reproductive induction hypothesis proposed to possibly explain the protracted mating of this species. Monitoring of dermal wounds provides a useful non-invasive technique to determine reproductive activity and a means for inference of social relationships in elasmobranch populations. 相似文献
