Variation of 80 multistate morphological characters and isozymes encoded by 13 loci among 23 vetch species of the type subgenus of the genus Vicia in comparison with V. dumetorum, V. pisiformis and V. sylvatica of the subgenus Cracca is described and analyzed with cladistic parsimony and phenetic neighbour-joining methods by using two different ways of coding. Morphological analyses showed the subgenus Vicia monophyletic and revealed subgroups in a general agreement with traditionally recognized sections, except showing V. faba nested within section Narbonensis and ambiguity in the position of V. lathyroides and V. bithynica. Parsimony analysis of orthozymes as presence/absence characters revealed in the subgenus two basic monophyletic clades: 1) V. faba and three species of the section Peregrinae, V. michauxii, V. aintabensis and V. peregrina, in one subclade linked with species of the Narbonensis and Hyperchusa sections together with V. pisiformis of subgenus Cracca in a second subclade; 2) species belonging to sections Vicia, Sepium, Pseudolathyrus and Lathyroides together with V. sylvatica of the subgenus Cracca. Neighbour-joining analysis of orthozymes revealed the same two basic groups, differing only in the relative position of some species in subclusters. Both isozyme analyses showed paraphyly of the subgenera Vicia and Cracca. Parsimony analysis of orthozymes as character states of isozymes yielded a largely unresolved strict consensus cladogram of 209 most parsimonious trees, and reweighting of characters failed to produce a stable tree. Phylogenetic congruence and discordance among morphological and isozyme analyses, coding ways, homoplasy and weighting of characters are discussed. Modus Darwin
Modus Darwin is a principle of inference that licenses the conclusion that two species have a common ancestor, based on the observation that they are similar. The present paper investigates the principle's probabilistic foundations.  相似文献

Character evolution in the orbital region of the Afrotheria   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
P. G. Cox 《Journal of Zoology》2006,269(4):514-526
The orbit or eye socket is a highly plastic area of the mammalian skull. There is significant variation within and between the different mammalian orders in the size and position of the bones and foramina that contribute to this region. For this reason, orbital characters are often used in attempts to determine the relationships of the various mammalian groups. This study describes the orbital region of the Afrotheria, the proposed group of endemic African mammals that comprises the paenungulates (elephants, manatees and dugongs, and hyraxes), elephant-shrews, aardvarks, golden moles and tenrecs. Evolution within the Afrotherian orbit is then explored by scoring 19 orbital characters in each Afrotherian genus, and plotting the character state changes on to previously existing phylogenies of the Afrotheria. These phylogenies were all produced from recent molecular work. It was found that there is a great deal of variation in the orbital region within the Afrotheria, most notably in the size of the lacrimal and its contacts with other bones, the appearance of the palatine in the orbit and the structure of the zygomatic arch. Overall, orbital characters strongly supported an elephant-hyrax clade over the more traditional grouping of elephants and sirenians (Tethytheria) within the paenungulates. There was also support for a monophyletic Tenrecoidea (a clade of tenrecs plus golden moles). Additionally, it was shown that there is a great deal of variation in the orbital region among the genera of the Tenrecidae and the Macroscelididae.  相似文献

The phylogeny of the genus Gunnera is investigated for the first time. Twelve species representing the six currently recognised subgenera are analysed. Two chloroplast DNA regions, the rbcL gene and the rps16 intron, together provide 46 informative characters out of 2335. A combined analysis of both genes gives four most parsimonious trees, firmly establishing the east South American G. herteri as sister group to the rest of the genus. The African G. perpensa is sister group to two well-supported clades, one including the South American subgenera Misandra and Panke, the other the Australian/New Zealand/Malayan species of subgenera Milligania and Pseudogunnera. Thus, South America is a composite area for Gunnera, showing up at two different levels in the cladogram. Our analysis supports a close biogeographic relationship between Australia and New Zealand. The evolution of some morphological characters is discussed. Lastly, the unusual structure of some of the rbcL sequences is reported. Received July 6, 2000 Accepted October 24, 2000  相似文献

The catalytically inactive isoforms of carbonic anhydrase (CAs) are known as CA-related proteins (CARPs) VIII, X, and XI. They have highly conserved amino acid sequences. These proteins are predominantly expressed in human and mouse brain, however, their precise roles are poorly known. CARP VIII is functionally associated with motor coordination in human and mouse. CARP X is more highly expressed in the pineal gland during night compared to the day time, suggesting a function for wake/sleep patterns. Phylogeny shows that CARP XI has emerged from CARP X. It is only found in tetrapods and is highly expressed in the central nervous system (CNS) of humans and is also associated with several cancers. Detailed analysis of CARPs is in progress in our laboratory to understand their role in normal physiology. We present a review of literature on CARPs and present some novel data on CARPs obtained in our laboratory.  相似文献

The systematic relationships of the snake genus Anomochilus   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
Phylogenetic analysis of 38 skeletal characters, 12 muscular characters and 15 visceral characters in 17 major snake clades plus Anomochilus suggests that Anomochilus is the sister taxon of all other living alethinophidian snakes. However, skeletal, muscular and visceral character sets analysed separately or in pairs give four groups of nonconcordant tree topologies. Based on the cladogram derived from the total evidence, two families are erected to prevent the existing family Uropeltidae from becoming paraphyletic: Anomochilidae, for the Malaysian and Indonesian genus Anomochilus , and Cylindrophiidae, for the Sri Lankan, Southeast Asian and Indonesian genus Cylindrophis and the Upper Eocene fossil Eoanilius.  相似文献

Pseudochattonella verruculosa is a heterokont flagellate and has frequently been found associated with multi-species harmful algal blooms in Wellington Harbour. In this study the partial sequences of the nuclear encoded LSU rDNA and the large subunit of ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase (rbcL) of Pseudochattonella isolated from Wellington Harbour indicate that it is similar to P. verruculosa, while sequences of mitochondrial encoded COI, are similar to those of Pseudochattonella farcimen. As with P. farcimen, the Wellington Pseudochattonella lacked violaxanthin, lutein and anteroxanthin, three pigments detected only in P. verruculosa. The Wellington isolate also contains zeaxanthin which is absent in P. farcimen. Among all Pseudochattonella, cells of the Wellington isolate are the most variable in terms of both size and shape. Mucocysts of the Wellington Pseudochattonella also have the greatest degree of variation – from small, ‘bullet’-shape to large oval, oblong or ‘sausage’-like. In the sexual reproduction phase two gametes of the Wellington isolate fuse to form a zygote which gives rise to a large multi-nucleate cell. At times two or more of these large multi-nucleate cells fuse further to form a ‘massive’, plasmodium-like aggregate (up to 200 μm long). Positive feeding and toxicity tests on rotifers confirmed that the Wellington Pseudochattonella is cytotoxic and probably also contributed to the May 2010 fish kills. As molecular phylogenies do not conclusively support the separation of the Wellington Harbour Pseudochattonella from P. verruculosa or P. farcimen, it is tentatively named as Pseudochattonella cf. verruculosa.  相似文献

Golden Nightjar Caprimulgus eximius is an apparently sedentary sub-Saharan species with a breeding range extending from Senegal and Mauritania to Sudan. Although genetic studies of nightjars and related Caprimulgiformes have been published previously, none has included Golden Nightjar. In this study, mitochondrial and nuclear DNA of a Golden Nightjar found dead in Western Sahara in April 2016 was sequenced and compared with other species in the genus Caprimulgus. It was concluded with strong support that Golden Nightjar is closely related to Egyptian Nightjar C. aegyptius. It is hypothesised that Golden and Egyptian Nightjars may have arisen by splitting of a single ancestral species into migratory and sedentary populations.  相似文献
