Female mate choice and the benefits of this behavior are criticalaspects of Darwinian sexual selection, but they are seldom documentedbecause it is difficult to identify the male trait(s) that femalesmay be seeking. We conducted experiments with grasshoppers (Melanoplussangutnipes: Orthoptera, Acrididae) to examine this behavior.Males that feed more intensively and select a diet mix thatpermits greater food intake (food intake per body mass per time)in laboratory trials were preferentially selected by females.These better foraging males on average provide greater paternalinvestment (greater spermatophore mass) to the female, whichincreases her reproductive rate (eggs produced per body massper time). However, paternal investment may not entirely explainfemale choice of better foraging males, because these maleswere still selected even if they had their food intake restrictedor had been allowed to recently mate, which reduces spermatophoreproduction. Furthermore, males change their mating strategyin response to female choice and the foraging abilities of surroundingmales. Poorer foraging males attempt forcible copulation ratherthan displaying and allowing female choice. A male will facultativelyswitch between these strategies depending on the foraging abilitiesof the surrounding males. While females attempt to reject forciblecopulation, forcible copulation reduces the frequency with whichfemales successfully copulate with better foraging males. Therefore,males that are less "attractive" to females adopt alternativemating strategies to counter female choice which would excludethem from mating.[Behav Ecol 7: 438–444 (1996)]  相似文献

Dispersal by young mammals away from their natal site is generallythought to reduce inbreeding, with its attendant negative fitnessconsequences. Genetic data from the dwarf mongoose, a pack-livingcarnivore common in African savannas, indicate that there areexceptions to this generalization. In dwarf mongoose populationsin the Serengeti National Park, Tanzania, breeding pairs arecommonly related, and close inbreeding has no measurable effecton offspring production or adult survival. Inbreeding occursbecause average relatedness among potential mates within a packis high, because mating patterns within the pack are randomwith respect to the relatedness of mates, and because dispersaldoes little to decrease the relatedness among mates. Young femalesare more likely to leave a pack when the dominant male is aclose relative but are relatively infrequent dispersers. Male wrens (Troglodytes troglodytes) construct nests that areused in their display to females. Previous work has suggestedthat the number of vacant nests may be used as a mate choicecue. Correlational data from 1992 confirmed that females appearedto be assessing die number of vacant nests on a male's territoryand preferentially mating with males with more nests. Male taillengdi was also correlated widi mating success. In 1993 thenumbers of nests on territories was experimentally manipulated,the female setdement patterns confirmed that die number of vacantnests did mediate mate choice. Male tail length failed to explainadditional variance in mating success when die variance explainedby the experimental manipulation was removed, suggesting diatdie original correlation arose because both tail length andmating success were correlated widi a confounding variable.The structure of the vegetation in a male's territory influencedmating success. This appeared to be due to nests surviving betterin territories widi dense vegetation. Males on territories inwhich nests survive well had longer tails. Male-male competitionfor good territories may explain die observed effects of malemorphology on mating success. Furdier analysis of die nest choicedata showed diat all nests had an equal chance of being usedby a female. The fact diat all nests had an equal probabilityof being chosen by a female means diat each additional nestbuilt by a male wren results in die same increase in matingsuccess. This suggests diat die benefits to males of nest buildingincrease linearly. The number of nests on a territory will beaffected by various factors such as predation pressure, nestbuilding rate, and vegetation structure. Synopsis In a high salinity estuary at North Inlet, South Carolina, co-occurrence and possible competition among adults of four dominant zooplanktivorous fishes were minimized by seasonal adjustments in lateral and vertical distributions as well as in dietary preferences. In winter, Atlantic silversides, Menidia menidia, occupied the entire water column while other planktivores were rare or absent from the estuary, and they consumed large prey such as mysid shrimps and fish larvae. An immigration of bay anchovies, Anchoa mitchilli, in the spring resulted in a redistribution of species with Atlantic silversides shifting to the surface waters and bay anchovies dominating the lower half of the water column. Both fishes consumed mostly copepods in the spring, but each favored a different species. There was little similarity in the large prey items consumed by the two fishes. Striped anchovies, Anchoa hepsetus, arrived in mid-summer and were most abundant at the surface while bay anchovies continued to dominate the bottom waters. Atlantic silversides were rare in all summer collections. The diets of the two anchovies were similar, but vertical separation during the period of maximum zooplankton abundance probably minimized competition. Rough silversides, Membras martinica, which were obligate surface dwellers, shared the upper water column with striped anchovies, but the two species had very different diets during their period of co-occurrence. Although seasonal changes in fish diets reflected shifts in zooplankton composition and all fishes consumed a variety of prey types, preferences for some prey taxa and total avoidance of others were indicated. Electivity indices indicated an especially strong selection for fiddler crab megalopae by all fishes in the summer and fall. All fishes, except rough silversides, which fed almost exclusively on copepods and crab zoeae, consumed large prey items when they were available. Fine scale partitioning of the food resources was apparent in the selection of different copepod and insect species by the fishes. Spatial and temporal separation in the distribution and/or dietary preferences of the zooplanktivores fishes probably reduces the potential for resource competition. Given the high abundances and selectivity of the planktivores, significant impacts on some zooplankton populations probably result.  相似文献

Synopsis The ecological and evolutionary forces maintaining genetic polymorphism within populations is of continuing interest to evolutionary biologists. Male pygmy swordtails,Xiphophorus pygmaeus, are polymorphic at a Y-linked locus controlling body color. Fish with the + and cp alleles have blue bodies; those with the con allele have bright gold bodies. Male and female fish were tested in the laboratory to determine if there were any preferences for association with groups of male fish based on color. Single test fish were presented with two groups of males of different phenotypes, and times in which the test fish spent in proximity to each group were recorded. Males of different phenotypes showed no differences in preference, nor did phenotype of the males in the groups affect the behavior of the test fish. Females also showed no preference for males of a particular phenotype. Finally, female test fish showed no preference for groups containing a male with the rare phenotype compared to a group containing all males of the same phenotype.  相似文献

The biology of the veliid bug M. d. atrolineata, its predatory behavior, and the effects of plural hunting were studied to evaluate its role as a predator of the brown planthopper Nilaparvata lugens in the Philippines. The probability of planthoppers falling onto the water surface and provision of habitat continuity was measured by a sticky trap placed at the base of rice hills in a greenhouse and in paddy fields. The developmental period of immature stages combined was 21 days. If given prey, females laid 25 eggs on the average during an adult life span of 18 days. Starved adults could survive for only 3–5 days. The functional response to prey density was sigmoid, and the maximum number of prey killed was 7 per day. Prey feeding was completed in 12–36 min. The percentage of successful prey attacks averaged 5–8%, decreasing with higher (and larger) developmental. stages of prey, but adult prey were found the soonest. Plural hunting increased the probability of capturing prey by as much as 2.5 times that by individual hunting. Late-instar nymphs, which may be more active, fell from rice hills in a greenhouse more than early-instar nymphs, and the number falling increased with density. In the field the percentage of planthoppers falling to the water in 1 day varied considerably, from 1% for nymphs in one field to 67% for adults in another field. On the basis of work described above and given the high density of veliid predators in flooded paddy fields of tropical Asia, M. d. atrolineata is considered one of the most important natural enemies of the brown planthopper.  相似文献

Summary The flagella of the pigmented algaEpipyxis pulchra (Chrysophyceae) were observed with image enhanced video microscopy to play an active role in gathering, physically seizing and selecting prey prior to phagocytosis. Vegetative unicells of this sessile, freshwater species possess two structurally and functionally distinct flagella, both active in feeding. During prey gathering the long flagellum, which is adorned with stiff hairs, beats rapidly to direct a strong water current towards the cell while the short, smooth flagellum moves very little. When a potential food particle is drawn by the current to contact the flagellar surfaces, the long flagellum stops beating and positions itself, in concert with the short flagellum, to seize the prey between them. Both flagella then briefly rotate the prey before selecting or rejecting it. If rejected, the particle is discarded by the coordinated activity of both flagella. If selected as food, the prey is held in place until a complex collecting cup emanates out from a position near the basal bodies and engulfs it. The cup plus enclosed food particle, now a food vacuole, is then retracted back to the cell proper.  相似文献

Porcine pancreatic lipase immobilized on celite particles has been employed as a catalyst for the esterification of dodecanol and decanoic acid in a predominantly organic system. Solvent influence on the equilibrium position and on the catalyst activity has been studied using 20 solvents, including aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, ethers, ketones, nitro- and halogenated hydrocarbons, and esters. The equilibrium constant for esterification correlates well with the solubility of water in the organic solvent, which in turn shows a good relationship with a function of Guttman's donor number and the electron pair acceptance index number of the solvent. This may be rationalized in terms of the requirements for solvation of water and of the reactants. The catalyst activity, measured as the initial rate of the esterification reaction, is best correlated as a function of both n-octanol-water partition coefficient (log P) and either the electron pair acceptance index or the polarizability.  相似文献
