The integrated recovery of solavetivone from fungus elicited "hairy root" cultures of Hyoscyamus muticus is examined using volatile organic solvents and solid-phase adsorbents in an external loop extraction configuration. Hexane and pentane are shown to be toxic when added directly to the culture; however, growth of roots is not inhibited when cultures are exposed to media saturated with these hydrocarbons. Solid-phase neutral adsorbents, XAD-7 and XAD-16, display higher capacity and better solavetivone partitioning capability than the hydrocarbons; however, their selectivity for the sesquiterpene solavetivone is poor in comparison with hexane. In both cases, the integration of product recovery through extraction resulted in a doubling of product formation by alleviating feedback repression. The role of escape reactions in determining the size distribution of prey captured by herring larvae

Synopsis Fish larvae are selective planktivores, and size is an important factor in prey selection. However, for herring larvae, a selection model based solely on the principle of optimising calorific gain per unit energy expenditure consistently overestimates the mean size of ingested prey. Most such models ignore the escape capabilities and shape of the prey, and the potential role of escape on capture success. In this paper, a static foraging model incorporating both selection and escape is described and tested against published data on the composition of herring larvae stomach contents. The results indicate that prey escape is a major factor structuring the diet composition of the larvae. 相似文献

Herbivore-induced plants responses can affect the preference and performance of herbivores and their natural enemies. These
responses may vary depending on the identity and number of herbivore species feeding on the plant so that when herbivores
from different guilds feed on plants, the interactions between plants, herbivores, and natural enemies may be disrupted. Tomato
plants were damaged either by the caterpillar Spodoptera exigua, or the aphid Macrosiphum euphorbiae, or damaged by both herbivores, or undamaged controls. We measured the preference and performance of S. exigua and its parasitoid Cotesia marginiventris, and activity of proteinase inhibitors (PI) as an indicator of induced resistance. Compared to undamaged plants, caterpillar
damage reduced the number of eggs laid by S. exigua adults, reduced growth, consumption, and survival of larval S. exigua and C. marginiventris, and increased activity of PIs 43%; but did not increase attraction of C. marginiventris. While pupal mass of S. exigua was not affected, the pupal mass of C. marginiventris decreased on caterpillar-damaged plants compared to controls. In contrast, plants damaged by aphids were preferred for oviposition
by S. exigua, and had increased larval consumption and survival, compared to controls. Aphid feeding did not affect the preference or
performance of C. marginiventris, or PI activity, compared to controls. While oviposition was deterred on caterpillar-damaged plants, plants damaged by both

Traditionally, sexual selection has been seen as a process in which choosy females select non‐choosy males. Recent studies, however, have challenged this view by showing that males can also be choosy in many species. We assessed the sexual preferences in males of the tropical jumping spider Hasarius adansoni (Audouin, 1826). We measured mating effort in males and determined how female quality influences offspring quality, quantity, and survival. We also estimated total sperm load and how much sperm was invested in a mating with a particular female. We found no evidence of male mating effort in terms of mating frequency nor sperm investment. Similarly, there was no relationship between female quality (i.e., size and condition) and offspring quality (i.e., survival and feeding performance) or quantity. We found strong evidence that the sperm invested in a particular female is a function of the amount of sperm the male had available for usage at that particular mating. The fact that males probably find females sequentially, along with the lack of relationship between female quality and offspring quality/quantity, likely explains the lack of differences in mating effort by males. 相似文献

Sugar feeding is crucial to bee colonies during periods without natural nectar resources. The health and the development of bee colonies are affected by the sugar feeding type. Also, some materials can be added to the sugar feeding to boost the ability of bee colonies to withstand parasites. Three materials (mint, cinnamon, and chamomile) are used commonly to control bee parasites (e.g. Varroa mites). In the present study, the effects of these materials on the development and health of bee colonies were assessed. Sugar candy supplemented with these materials plus sugar candy only as a control group were tested. Bee colonies were fed with these feeding types weekly. Then, some parameters were evaluated. The results showed the suitability of the tested feeding types to bee colonies. Building of wax foundations was accelerated in cinnamon group. This group had also the lowest infestation rates with Varroa mites, suggesting a specific role of cinnamon in Varroa control. The colony development was significantly better in chamomile group than the other groups. Mint group showed no variations than the control group in most parameters. All feeding types showed safety to bees based on morphological characteristics and bee survival results. Practically, cinnamon is advised when building of wax combs is required while chamomile is recommended when increasing strength of colonies is needed. The role of cinnamon in controlling Varroa is recommended for further investigations. 相似文献

In the present study, the relationship between personality dimensions and Circadian Preference was evaluated using a structural equation modeling approach. Participants (N?=?390; 53.8% female, mean age: 26.8?±?8.1 yrs) completed measures of Circadian Preference, Impulsivity, Sensation Seeking, and the Big Five factors. A mediation structural equation model assessed the direct and indirect effects of the Big Five factors on Circadian Preference. The results showed that Impulsivity and Sensation Seeking were significantly associated with Eveningness, whereas no significant direct effects of the Big Five traits were detected once the effects of Impulsivity and Sensation Seeking were taken into account. Both volatile and nonvolatile molecules are involved in chemosensory communication in rodents. Volatile odors from physically inaccessible estrous females induced increased numbers of c-Fos-positive cells in the preoptic area (POA) and in the cortical nucleus of the amygdala (CoA) of male rats. The numbers of c-Fos-positive cells in the medial nucleus of the amygdala (MeA) increased in response to the nonvolatile odors of bedding soiled with the excreta of estrous females. In an alternate choice paradigm, male rats carrying ibotenic acid lesions in either the MeA or the CoA—or a combination of both—distinguished the odors of estrous females from those of males, although the time spent sniffing the stimuli was diminished. Males with POA lesions showed complete loss of this capability. Males carrying either of the lesions did not detect differences between estrous and anestrous females or between intact and orchidectomized males. Lesions in the POA or MeA severely impaired male sexual behavior, whereas a CoA lesion had no effects. Thus, c-Fos-positive cells in the CoA might be involved in chemosensory transmission relevant to certain social contexts, but not in the execution of male sexual behavior. The POA is indispensable for both olfactory preferences and sexual behavior. The residual olfactory preference in males with MeA or CoA lesions or the combination of both could reflect an additional route for chemosensory transmission from the main olfactory bulb to the POA. 相似文献

The molecular bases of plant resistance and defense responses to aphid feeding: current status 总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
Plant genes participating in the recognition of aphid herbivory in concert with plant genes involved in defense against herbivores mediate plant resistance to aphids. Several such genes involved in plant disease and nematode resistance have been characterized in detail, but their existence has only recently begun to be determined for arthropod resistance. Hundreds of different genes are typically involved and the disruption of plant cell wall tissues during aphid feeding has been shown to induce defense responses in Arabidopsis, Triticum, Sorghum, and Nicotiana species. Mi‐1.2, a tomato gene for resistance to the potato aphid, Macrosiphum euphorbiae (Thomas), is a member of the nucleotide‐binding site and leucine‐rich region Class II family of disease, nematode, and arthropod resistance genes. Recent studies into the differential expression of Pto‐ and Pti1‐like kinase genes in wheat plants resistant to the Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko), provide evidence of the involvement of the Pto class of resistance genes in arthropod resistance. An analysis of available data suggests that aphid feeding may trigger multiple signaling pathways in plants. Early signaling includes gene‐for‐gene recognition and defense signaling in aphid‐resistant plants, and recognition of aphid‐inflicted cell damage in both resistant and susceptible plants. Furthermore, signaling is mediated by several compounds, including jasmonic acid, salicylic acid, ethylene, abscisic acid, giberellic acid, nitric oxide, and auxin. These signals lead to the development of direct chemical defenses against aphids and general stress‐related responses that are well characterized for a number of abiotic and biotic stresses. In spite of major plant taxonomic differences, similarities exist in the types of plant genes expressed in response to feeding by different species of aphids. The present review is based on the thesis that mate choice results from information-processing mechanisms governed by computational rules and that, to understand how females choose their mates, we should identify which are the sources of information and how they are used to make decisions. We describe mate choice as a three-step computational process and for each step we present theories and review empirical evidence. The first step is a perceptual process. It describes the acquisition of evidence, that is, how females use multiple cues and signals to assign an attractiveness value to prospective mates (the preference function hypothesis). The second step is a decisional process. It describes the construction of the decision variable (DV), which integrates evidence (private information by direct assessment), priors (public information), and value (perceived utility) of prospective mates into a quantity that is used by a decision rule (DR) to produce a choice. We make the assumption that females are optimal Bayesian decision makers and we derive a formal model of DV that can explain the effects of preference functions, mate copying, social context, and females' state and condition on the patterns of mate choice. The third step of mating decision is a deliberative process that depends on the DRs. We identify two main categories of DRs (absolute and comparative rules), and review the normative models of mate sampling tactics associated to them. We highlight the limits of the normative approach and present a class of computational models (sequential-sampling models) that are based on the assumption that DVs accumulate noisy evidence over time until a decision threshold is reached. These models force us to rethink the dichotomy between comparative and absolute decision rules, between discrimination and recognition, and even between rational and irrational choice. Since they have a robust biological basis, we think they may represent a useful theoretical tool for behavioural ecologist interested in integrating proximate and ultimate causes of mate choice. 相似文献
