Summary Predation by red-winged blackbirds Agelaius phoeniceus L. on 13-year periodical cicadas (Magicicada spp.) and reactions by periodical cicadas to predators were studied during emergence of Brood XIX during summer of 1985 in northwestern Arkansas (USA). Emergences of periodical cicadas are classic examples of predator satiation due to high local densities of cicadas and birds are the major predators of adult periodical cicadas. Reactions of periodical cicadas to predators were assessed by recording behaviors exhibited by cicadas when approached in trees by a human hand during the 3-week period of peak adult densitics. Most male cicadas made a noise in association with escape behaviors when approached, and 50% of the females, which are silent, attempted escape behaviors. Observations of predation attempts on cicadas by red-winged blackbirds were made during the period of peak predation pressure. Red-winged blackbirds spent less time searching for cicadas over that 2-week period of increasing predation pressure, and became increasingly efficient at capturing cicadas. Handling time of cicadas by red-winged blackbirds increased by about 20 seconds over that period, as blackbirds spent more time consuming female cicadas. The flysquawk response, used only by male cicadas, was effective in deterring red-winged blackbirds; only 5% of the attacks by blackbirds were successful when that behavior was exhibited. All cicadas that remained motionless and silent when approached by blackbirds were captured and consumed. Because females remained inactive when approached more often than did males, blackbirds may have consumed more female cicadas. Changes that appeared in reactions of preiodical cicadas to the model predator and to the attacks of blackbirds reflect both changes in the sex ratio of the cicada populations and changes in behaviors of cicadas associated with mating and egg laying. The loud noise made by male periodical cicadas at mating centers did not appear to deter predation by blackbirds. Changes in the behavior of blackbirds that appeared to be in association with greater predation on female periodical cicadas relates directly to aspects of foraging theory, particularly predictions concerning more selective foraging during periods of abundant food resources.  相似文献

Synopsis The behavior of individual, juvenile pink salmon toward novel prey (Artemia salina) under laboratory conditions is described. Two aspects of predatory behavior, namely latency time to initial prey-capture attempt and prey-capture success, are quantified in relation to chronological age and feeding experience. Initially, mean latency time declined slightly with increasing age up to Day 19 (post-emergence from gravel), but increased sharply to an asymptote with further aging. Mean percentage capture success gradually increased from 7.88% on Day 1 to 92.9% on Day 45. Prior feeding experience on the prey resulted in a decline (to a stable level) in mean latency time in experienced fish compared to control fish. Mean percentage capture success was not significantly altered by prior feeding experience on the prey.  相似文献

Predation is one of the significant biotic mortality factors reducing the insect pest population as functional response and the numerical response of the predator are the key factor regulating the population dynamics of predator prey species. This study is aimed to evaluate the functional response of all the developmental stages of Scymnus coccivora Ayyar (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) against the different densities of cotton mealybug, Phenacoccus solenopsis (Tinsley) (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) and the numerical response of female predator. Experiments were carried out in controlled environment laboratory conditions at 25 ± 1 °C temperature, 60 ± 5% relative humidity and photoperiod of 16 h. Number of eggs consumed, number of eggs laid and the Efficiency of Conversion of Ingested food (ECI) were recorded daily. Results from the study revealed that all the developmental stages of S. coccivora exhibited a Type II response. Different parameters such as attack rate (a’), handling time (Th) and the maximum rate of predation were estimated using Roger’s random attack equation and Holling Disc equation in which Rogers random attack equation was found best fit. Female has shown the highest attack rate (a’) followed by IVth instar grub, male, IIIrd, IInd and Ist instar grub. With low handling time, IVth instar grub has shown maximum predation rate of 76.40 per day followed by female (75.86), male (58.79), IIIrd (22.84), IInd (19.65) and Ist instar grub (15.39). The numerical response increase was curvilinearly related to different prey densities with the highest number of eggs (11.8 ± 3.44) produced at highest prey density (160). The Efficiency of Conversion of Ingested food (ECI) was highest (64.49 ± 8.03) at prey density of 10. Understanding the factors that lead to variation in functional response of predator in natural population will advance our understanding of the effects of predation on individual and the effectiveness of coccinellid predators as biocontrol agent against cotton mealybug.  相似文献

Summary Bolas spiders are relatively rare members of the large family known as orb weavers. Instead of using a typical web to capture prey, late-stadia and adult female bolas spiders swing a droplet of adhesive on a thread at flying insects. Mastophora hutchinsoni (Araneae: Araneidae) is one of five Mastophora species known from the United States and occurs over much of eastern North America. It is univoltine in Kentucky and overwinters in the egg stage. Spiderling emerged in May, the diminutive males matured in late June and early July, and females matured in early September. Eggs were produced from late September to late October or early November. This report is the first complete documentation of the population phenology of any bolas spider. Newly-emerged M. hutchinsoni spiderlings did not use a bolas, but instead hunted by positioning themselves on the underside of leaf margins where they ambushed small arthropods that crawled along the leaf margins. Subadult and adult female M. hutchinsoni used a bolas to capture moths. Only male moths were captured, specifically three species of Noctuidae (bristly cutworm, bronzed cutworm, and smoky tetanolita) and one species of Pyralidae (bluegrass webworm). Among 492 prey captured by more than twenty spiders at two sites during 1985 and 1986, smoky tetanolita moths and bristly cutworm moths accounted for 93% of the total. The flight behavior of approaching moths, the limited taxa caught from a large available moth fauna, and the fact that only males were caught support the hypothesis that the spider attracts its prey by producing chemicals which mimic the sex pheromones of these moth species. Adult female M. hutchinsoni frequently captured more than one moth species on a given night. The two most common prey species were active at different times of night, the bristly cutworm soon after nightfall and the smoky tetanolita generally between 11:00 p.m. and dawn. This pattern suggests that mating activity of these moth species may be temporally isolated, a common phenomenon when sympatric species have similar pheromones. If so, the spider could capture both species without producing different pheromone-mimicking compounds, simply by hunting during the activity period of each species.The investigation reported in this paper (No. 87-7-76) is in connection with a project of the Kentucky Agricultural Experiment Station and is published with the approval of the Director  相似文献

Summary Researchers have documented microhabitat partitioning among the heteromyid rodents of the deserts of North America that may result from microhabitat specific predation rates; large/bipedal species predominate in the open/risky microhabitat and small/quadrupedal species predominate in the bush/safer microhabitat. Here, we provide direct experimental evidence on the role of predatory risk in affecting the foraging behavior of three species of heteromyid rodents: Arizona pocket mouse (Perognathus amplus; small/quadrupedal), Bailey's pocket mouse (P. baileyi; large/quadrupedal), and Merriam's kangaroo rat (Dipodomys merriami; large/bipedal). Both kangaroo rats and pocket mice are behaviorally flexible and able to adjust their foraging behavior to nightly changes in predatory risk. Under low levels of perceived predatory risk the kangaroo rat foraged relatively more in the open microhabitat than the two pocket mouse species. In response to the presence of barn owls, however, all three species shifted their habitat use towards the bush microhabitat. In response to direct measures of predatory risk, i.e. the actual presence of owls, all three species reduced foraging and left resource patches at higher giving up densities of seeds. In response to indirect indicators of predatory risk, i.e. illumination, there was a tendency for all three species to reduce foraging. The differences in morphology between pocket mice and kangaroo rats do appear to influence their behavioral responses to predatory risk.  相似文献

Summary Minimum daily consumption of bivalves Gaimardia sp by kelp gulls in a Macrocystis kelp bed at Porvenir, Tierra del Fuego, was calculated to be ca. 525 000 individuals, corresponding to an energy removal of ca. 21 kJ·m-2·d-1. This is far in excess of energy removal by any other higher-trophic-level predator in southern Chilean Macrocystis beds, but previous work has ignored kelp gulls as a component of the kelp bed community.  相似文献

Insect size usually increases greatly in the latter stages of development, while reproductive value increases strongly with adult size. Mechanisms that can balance the benefits associated with increased growth are poorly understood, raising the question: what keeps insects from becoming larger? If predation risk was to increase with juvenile size, it would make an extension of development very risky, favouring smaller final sizes. But field measures of juvenile mortality seldom show any general patterns of size dependence. We here therefore try to estimate a mechanistic relationship between juvenile size and predation risk by exposing the larvae of two closely related butterflies to a generalist invertebrate predator in a laboratory experiment. Predation risk increased with larval size but was not affected by the species-specific growth rate differences. These results indicate that predation risk may increase with the size of the juvenile even when predators are relatively small. By basing a model simulation on our data we also show that size dependent predation of the kind found in this study has potential to stabilise selection on body size in these species. Thus, these findings suggest that more detailed studies of the size dependence of predation risk on juvenile instars will increase the understanding of what it is that keeps insects small.  相似文献

The whiptail lizard Aspidoscelis uniparens searches for fossorial prey using a series of moves and pauses punctuated by bouts of digging. We examined the effect of predation risk on foraging A. uniparens in outdoor enclosures, observing their behavior in the presence and absence of the predatory lizard Gambelia wislizenii. Predator presence led to changes in activity patterns and foraging behavior. When predators were present, A. uniparens reduced both the proportion of time active and time moving, shifted activity periods, reduced their movement rate, and changed the duration of moves. There were no apparent changes in digging effort, but the likelihood of successfully digging for food decreased when a predator was present.  相似文献

As part of studies investigating the influence of grazers on reef meiofauna, we assessed the density, composition and richness of meiofauna (retained on a 100-μm sieve) on the leeward reef slope of Heron Reef, GBR, Australia using an airlift vacuum sampling device. Estimates of meiofauna densities ranged between 40 individuals 10 cm−2 and 290 individuals 10 cm−2, which is considerably lower than many estimates from carbonate sediments and hard substrates from other reefs and marine habitats. The 17 taxa of meiofauna were dominated by harpacticoid copepods (40%) and nematodes (32%). Varying sediment load within algal turfs explained 37% of variation of meiofauna density. A model is proposed in which increased shelter afforded by high living coral cover reduces meiofaunal losses from grazing and increases sediment loads, balanced by areas of low coral cover in which sedimentation rates are lower and grazing rates higher. At none of the four sites did major differences in abundance occur between November and March sampling events. Together these observations suggest that epilithic meiofaunal communities are generally spatially and temporally predictable at small scales in this reef system, indicating that their ecological services are similarly conservative. Human damage to biogenic substrata such as maerl has been receiving increasing attention recently. Maerl forms highly biodiverse and heterogeneous habitats composed of loose-lying coralline red algae, which fulfil nursery area prerequisites for queen scallops (Aequipecten opercularis) and other invertebrates. The benefits obtained by queen scallops utilising maerl were poorly understood, so we used both laboratory predation and field tethering experiments to investigate the refuge and growth potential provided by pristine live maerl (PLM) grounds over other common substrata. In aquaria, more juvenile queen scallops (<35 mm shell height) survived on PLM than on gravel substrata in the presence of the crab Carcinus maenas or the starfish Asterias rubens. Field tethering experiments indicated similar survivorship of juvenile queen scallops on PLM than gravel; additionally, their growth rates were similar on both substrata. PLM allows scallops to seek refuge from predators and position themselves to optimise their food supply. Other bivalve refugia have been shown to provide poor food supply as a consequence of their high heterogeneity, yet maerl grounds provide a ‘win-win’ scallop nursery area coupling refuge availability with high food supply.  相似文献
