Representations of the Natural System in the Nineteenth century   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
‘The Natural System’ is the abstract notion of the order in living diversity. The richness and complexity of this notion is revealed by the diversity of representations of the Natural System drawn by ornithologists in the Nineteenth Century. These representations varied in overall form from stars, to circles, to maps, to evolutionary trees and cross-sections through trees. They differed in their depiction of affinity, analogy, continuity, directionality, symmetry, reticulation and branching, evolution, and morphological convergence and divergence. Some representations were two-dimensional, and some were three-dimensional; n-dimensional representations were discussed but never illustrated. The study of diagrammatic representations of the Natural System is made difficult by the frequent failure of authors to discuss them in their texts, and by the consequent problem of distinguishing features which carried meaning from arbitrary features and printing conventions which did not. Many of the systematics controversies of the last thirty years have their roots in the conceptual problems which surrounded the Natural System in the late 1800s, problems which were left unresolved when interest in higher-level systematics declined at the turn of this century. The miscibility of phosphatidylcholine (PC) and phosphatidylglycerol (PG) with different chain lengths (n = 14, 16) was examined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) at pH 2 and pH 7. The determination of the coexistence curves of the phase diagrams was performed using a new procedure, namely the direct simulation of the heat capacity curves as described recently (Johann et al. 1996, Garidel et al. 1997). From the simulations of the heat capacity curves first estimates for the nonideality parameters for nonideal mixing as a function of composition were obtained and phase diagrams were constructed using temperatures for the onset and offset of melting which were corrected for the broadening effect caused by a decrease in cooperativity of the transition. In most cases, the composition dependence of the nonideality parameters indicated nonsymmetric mixing behavior. The phase diagrams were further refined by simulations of the coexisting curves using a four-parameter model to account for nonideal and nonsymmetric mixing in the gel as well as in the liquid-crystalline phase. The mixing behavior of the systems was analyzed as a function of pH and chain length difference to elucidate the effect of these two parameters on the shape of the phase diagrams. At pH 7 the phase boundaries are much closer together and a narrower coexistence range is obtained compared to the corresponding phase diagrams at pH 2. For DPPC/DMPG at pH 2, the shape of the phase diagram and the strongly positive nonideality parameter ρ 1 for the liquid-crystalline phase indicates an upper azeotropic point. This indicates an unusual behavior of the system, namely more pronounced clustering of like molecules in the liquid-crystalline phase compared to the gel phase. This study aims to analyse how vegetation, and in particular the degree of openness of the landscape, is reflected in pollen assemblages from surface sediment in lakes. Modern analogues of ancient cultural landscapes in southern Sweden were selected. Surface sediments from 22 small lakes (0.5–20 ha) located mainly in the forest region of southern Sweden were collected and analysed for pollen in order to enlarge and complement an earlier data set of 13 lakes collected in the open, agricultural region of southernmost Sweden. The composition of the landscape surrounding the lakes was mapped within 1000-m and 500-m radii around the lakes using Colour InfraRed (CIR) aerial photographs. The pollen and landscape data were analysed using numerical ordination techniques. The results show that, despite the large variation of landscape openness, the variation in non-arboreal pollen (NAP) is low between the sites which was not the case for the 13 lakes of the previous study. It is hypothesised that this may be due to differences in the major characteristics of the two regions in which the sites were selected, i.e. mainly treeless and intensively farmed in the previous study and mainly forested in the present investigation. The difference in background pollen appears to play a decisive role on the relative representation of NAP. This implies that the background pollen should be estimated before NAP percentages can be used for quantitative reconstruction of past landscape openness. In the 22 lakes studied, Gramineae, Cerealia (excludingSecale),Filipendula andSalix are positively correlated to cultivated land within both radii, and with open land (tree cover not exceeding 20%) within the 1000-m radius.Quercus andFagus have some positive correlation with deciduous orest within 1000-m radius. We conclude that the landscape units cultivated land, open land and deciduous forest within 1000-m radius are reasonably well reflected in the pollen assemblages and could be predicted within this area.  相似文献

A qualitative and quantitative analysis of airborne pollen and spores was carried out over 2 years (from September 1987 to August 1989) in the city of León. Slides were prepared daily using a volumetric pollen trap, which was placed on the Faculty of Veterinary Science building (University of León) 12m above ground-level. Fifty-one pollen types were observed; the most important of these were: Cupressaceae during the winter,Pinus andQuercus in spring, and Poaceae, Leguminosae and Chenopodiaceae in the summer. The results also showed the existence of a rich mould spore assemblage in the atmosphere. The group of Amerospores (Penicillium, Aspergillus andCladosporium) as well as Dictyospores (Alternaria) were the most abundant;Puccinia was common in the air in August. Fluctuations in the total pollen and spores m3 of air were compared with meteorological parameters (temperature, relative humidity and rainfall). From the daily sampling of the atmosphere of León, considering the maximum and minimum temperature and duration of rainfall, the start of the pollen grain season was observed generally to coincide with a rise in temperature in the absence of rain.  相似文献

In this work, an interesting potential application of phytochemistry is reported. In particular, we employed the Sporne diagrams to provide information about the evolution of some different Lamiaceae species in relation to their content in secondary metabolites. In more details, fifteen species belonging to six different genera were studied i.e. Ajuga L., Galeopsis L., Melittis L., Sideritis L., Stachys L. and Teucrium L. The selected secondary metabolites were iridoids because of their wide occurrence and distribution within all the family, thus providing a more accurate and general overview. Nineteen different compounds of this class were identified in the studied species. The aim of this work was to verify if the evolutionary data available in literature for the studied species and based on molecular studies, matched with those obtained from a more phytochemical approach or not. The final objective was to ascertain a correspondence between these two opposite methods. The results of this study clearly showed that, only in some cases, this correspondence was present. This may suggest the possibility to use both methods for drawing phylogenetic trees of plants. Anyway, this study is not general and is quite limited in studied species and in collection areas and does not intend to affirm its absolute accuracy even though it may be a good starting point for future researches in this field.  相似文献

Ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) absorption and vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectroscopy were used to study conformational transitions in the double-stranded poly(rA). poly(rU) and its components-single-stranded poly(rA) and poly(rU) in buffer solution (pH 6.5) with 0.1M Na+ and different Mg2+ and Cd2+ (10(-6) to 10(-2) M) concentrations. Transitions were induced by elevated temperature that changed from 10 up to 96 degrees C. IR absorption and VCD spectra in the base-stretching region were obtained for duplex, triplex, and single-stranded forms of poly(rA) . poly(rU) at [Mg2+],[Cd2+]/[P] = 0.3. For single-stranded polynucleotides, the kind of conformational transition (ordering --> disordering --> compaction, aggregation) is conditioned by the dominating type of Me2+-polymer complex that in turn depends on the ion concentration range. The phase diagram obtained for poly(rA) . poly(rU) has a triple point ([Cd2+] approximately 10(-4)M) at which the helix-coil (2 --> 1) transition is replaced with a disproportion transition 2AU --> A2U + poly(rA) (2 --> 3) and the subsequent destruction of the triple helix (3 --> 1). The 2 --> 1 transitions occur in the narrow temperature interval of 2 degrees -5 degrees . Unlike 2 --> 1 and 3 --> 1 melting, the disproportion 2 --> 3 transition is a slightly cooperative one and observed over a wide temperature range. At [Me2+] approximately 10(-3) M, the temperature interval of A2U stability is not less than 20 degrees C. In the case of Cd2+, it increases with the rise of ion concentration due to the decrease of T(m) (2-->3). The T(m) (3-->1) value is practically unchanged up to [Cd2+] approximately 10(-3)M. Differences between diagrams for Mg(2+) and Cd2+ result from the various kinds of ion binding to poly(rA).poly-(rU) and poly(rA).  相似文献

Long-term variations (1979–1990) of three benthic communities (Eastern Channel, France) were analysed by means of factor correspondence analysis (FCA), a multivariate method of ordination in reduced space, and rank-frequency diagrams (RFD). FCA distinguished periods of relative homogeneity and periods of strong variations in the structure of the communities. Two communities, the pebbles community and a rich and diverse mussel (Mytilus edulis) bed, showed great variations in the abundance of the main species (Ophiothrix fragilis in the first one, andM. edulis in the second one) which generated the enrichment of the community by their suspension-feeding behaviour. Beyond the multi-annual cycle induced by these variations, both communities seemed to be quite stable as no continuing trends could be seen. The third community, established on heterogeneous sand, also showed a multi-annual cycle linked to granulometric variations of the sediment. As passive supplies of detritus were not important and suspension feeders could hardly live in these conditions, the community stayed poor and was dominated by carnivores and deposit-feeders.  相似文献

We study the dynamics and bifurcations of noise-free neurons coupled by gap junctions and inhibitory synapses, using both delayed delta functions and alpha functions to model the latter. We focus on the case of two cells, as in the studies of Chow and Kopell (2000) and Lewis and Rinzel (2003), but also show that stable asynchronous splay states exist for globally coupled networks of N cells dominated by subthreshold electrical coupling. Our results agree with those of Lewis and Rinzel (2003) in the weak coupling range, but our Poincaré map analysis yields more information about global behavior and domains of attraction, and we show that the explicit discontinuous maps derived using delayed delta functions compare well with the continuous history-dependent, implicitly-defined maps derived from alpha functions. We find that increased bias currents, super-threshold electrical coupling and synaptic delays promote synchrony, while sub-threshold electrical coupling and fast synapses promote asynchrony. We compare our analytical results with simulations of an ionic current model of spiking cells, and briefly discuss implications for stimulus response modes of locus coeruleus and for central pattern generators.
