Arsenic in orchard and potato soils and plant tissue   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Summary The total and water soluble arsenic contents of orchard and potato field soils are significantly higher where arsenic has been applied. Orchards with a record of past and present applications show average values as high as 99.57 ppm total arsenic and 1.99 ppm water-soluble arsenic. Orchards with a low or no arsenic application show 27.21 ppm total and 0.20 ppm water-soluble arsenic. Potato fields situated on ex-orchard plantings have an average of 38.70 ppm total and 0.32 ppm water-soluble arsenic, whereas those on non-orchard soils showed values of 9.63 and 0.04 ppm respectively. Highest soil arsenic concentrations were found in the 0–10 cm surface layer and at a distance of one meter from the tree trunk. In plant tissue the apple leaf, peel and pulp all were significantly higher for recently arsenic treated orchards, while only the apple pulp showed significance where applications had been discontinued for the past 10–15 years. Potato leaf and peel were significantly higher in arsenic on exorchard soil while the pulp was not.  相似文献

Summary Neonate rat endocranial osteoblasts were cultured on their bone surfaces in control medium (CC) or medium to which either parathyroid extract (PTE) or calcitonin (CT) had been added for 2, 4, 8 or 24 h. Some were cultured for 24 h in CC, then for 2, 4, 8 or 24 h in either CT or PTE medium; or for 24 h in PTE, then for 2, 4, 8 or 24 h in either CC or CT; or 24 h in CT and 2, 4, 8 or 24 h in CC. The dorsal ruffling of the cells in CC was found to be suppressed by later culturing with PTE and the disoriented cells reorganized to form arrays of parallel cells. The effects of PTE were also reversed by CC or CT: the osteoblasts in the second culture (CC) lost elongation and order, and proceeded through a proliferative phase before exhibiting the ruffling form similar to a single CC 24 h culture. PTE-cultured osteoblasts showed an increase in cell overlap and contact so that a more competent barrier was formed separating the bone from the medium. Summary A mathematical model of the species-area relation is described for a group of limited species. This model is a modification of that proposed earlier (Kobayashi, 1975), being assumed that the limited species are expected to occur in a habitat under consideration. The model equation gives a sigmoid species-log area curve implying that few rare species are found in a group of species. The good agreement between observation and this model is exemplified with the data of plant and arthropod communities. The implication of parameters involved are examined in connection with those of the preceding model, and the underlying ecology of the model is discussed. In yeast reversion studies, assay of the total number of cells is made by plating irradiated cells on agar plates containing yeast extract, peptone and dextrose (YEPD) medium. The number of revertants are scored by plating cells on synthetic complete (SC) medium deficient in the particular nutrient for which the reversion is tested. In this procedure equivalence for cell survival between the YEPD and the SC media is always assumed. However it is shown in this paper that this assumption is valid only up to dose levels where cell killing is not significant. At high doses, survivals on the two media differ significantly from each other for both high and low LET radiations. This difference influences the slope of the reversion frequency curve at high doses. Since the reversion frequency is expressed with reference to the number of survivors after a given radiation dose, it is essential to see that the same chance of survival is offered to the reverted and unreverted cells.Even though reversion is reported to vary linearly with dose, it is found that this linearity is restricted only to dose levels where cell killing is not significant. At higher doses, the reversion frequency varies in a very complex manner with dose for both high and low LET radiations. The complexity depends further on the reference medium chosen.  相似文献

On the basis of allyalcohol resistance, Saccharomyces cerevisiae mutanta were isolated that were deficient in alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH). The mutants were divided into three classes by their different ADH isozyme pattern obtained after starch-gel electrophoresis: adc mutants that did not produce the constitutive ADH, adr mutants from which the glucose repressible enzyme (ADHII) was absent, and adm mutants deficient in ADH activity associated with the mitochondria.Genetic analysis showed that two genes control synthesis of the glucose repressible enzyme ADHII, one gene the constitutive ADHI and a fourth nuclear gene the mitochondrial ADH. None of these four genes showed any linkage.The various mutant types did not show drastic effects on yeast growth on media containing glucose or ethanol as sole carbon sources.  相似文献

Perchloric acid extracts of radiation-induced fibrosarcoma (RIF-1) tumors grown in mice have been analyzed by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy and by various chromatographic methods. This analysis has permitted the unambiguous assignment of the 31P resonances observed in vivo to specific phosphorus-containing metabolites. The region of the in vivo spectra generally assigned to sugar phosphates has been found in RIF-1 tumors to contain primarily phosphorylethanolamine and phosphorylcholine rather than glycolytic intermediates. Phosphocreatine was observed in extracts of these tumor cells grown in culture as well as in the in vivo spectra, indicating that at least some of the phosphocreatine observed in vivo arises from the tumor itself and not from normal tissues. In the 31P-NMR spectra of the perchloric acid extract, resonances originating from purine and pyrimidine nucleoside di- and triphosphate were resolved. HPLC analyses of the nucleotide pool indicate that adenine derivatives were the most abundant components, but other nucleotides were present in significant amounts. The 1H and 13C resonance assignments of the majority of metabolites present in RIF-1 extracts have also been made. Of particular importance is the ability to observe lactate, the levels of which may provide a noninvasive measure of glycolysis in these cells in both the in vivo and in vitro states. In addition, the aminosulfonic acid, taurine, was found in high levels in the tumor extracts.  相似文献

Arginine vasopressin stimulates Na+-K+-ATPase activity located in the rat thick ascending limb of s'Henle loop. Mammalian hypothalamus appears to produce a factor capable of inhibiting Na+-K+-ATPase activity in a variety of tissues. The effect of a purified rat hypothalamic extract with and without AVP on rat renal Na+-K+-ATPase activity was evaluated by a cytochemical technique. The hypothalamic extract alone failed to affect basal Na+-K+-ATPase activity throughout renal segments after 10 min exposure. Na+-K+-ATPase activity stimulated by AVP (1–10 fmol l?1) for 10 min was inhibited by rat hypothalamic extract over the concentration range 10?7–10?3 U ml?1 in a dose-dependent manner. Complete inhibition of AVP-stimulated Na+-K+-ATPase activity occurred at a hypothalamic extract concentration of 10?3 U ml?1. Only Na+-K+-ATPase activity located in the renal medullary thick ascending limb was influenced by the rat hypothalamic extract.  相似文献

Cultivated and wild potato species synthesize a wide variety of steroidal glycoalkaloids (GA) that may affect either human health or biotic stress resistance. Therefore, GA composition must be a major criterion in the evaluation of breeding products when species genomes are merged and/or manipulated. This work reports the results of GA analysis performed on unique haploid (2n=2x=24) plants obtained from tetraploid (2n=4x=48) Solanum bulbocastanumS. tuberosum hybrids through in vitro anther culture. Glycoalkaloids were extracted from tubers and analyzed by HPLC. Haploids generally showed the occurrence of parental GA. However, in several cases loss of parental GA and gain of new GA lacking in the parents was observed. It may be hypothesized that new GA profiles of our haploids is the result of either genetic recombination or combinatorial biochemistry events. To highlight differences between haploids and parents, soluble proteins and antioxidant activities were also determined. Both were always higher in haploids compared to their parents. The nature of the newly formed GAs will be further investigated, because they may represent new metabolites that can be used against pest and diseases, or are useful for human health.  相似文献

Two field experiments were conducted in West Java, Indonesia to investigate the effects on insect populations in a potato crop of intercropping with Allium cepa or A. sativum. Intercropping reduced populations of Myzus persicae, Aphis gossypii and Empoasca spp. when less than 0.75 m separated the potato plants and Allium spp. Leaf damage to potato by Henosepilachna sparsa was also reduced at this spacing; but populations of Thrips palmi or T. parvispinus were increased.
