Summary We deal with the causes of the synchronously fluctuating numbers of subpopulations of the carabid species Calathus melanocephalus as compared with the asynchronously fluctuating numbers of subpopulations of the carabid Pterostichus versicolor. Both species continuously occupy a large heath area, Dwingelder Veld (1600 ha), in The Netherlands, and are studied there in the same localities with the same methods. Of the adults of C. melanocephalus, 90% do not cover more than 2 ha during the entire reproductive season, while 90% of adults of P. versicolor cover no more than 12 ha. In C. melanocephalus egg production in the field is usually similar to that under optimal feeding conditions in the laboratory, but in P. versicolor egg production seems to be much lower in the field. In the field 70–80% of the eggs most probably are killed by eelworms, followed by more than 90% mortality among the remaining larvae. Comparing mortality of developmental stages in laboratory experiments with that in field experiments in enclosures, it appears that mortality of larvae is not density-dependent, even when density in the experiments is much higher than it ever is in the field. Larval mortality mainly results from the poor ability of the larvae to find prey, even when in field experiments prey density is increased far above natural densities. We discuss why these poor prey-finding abilities are not improved by natural selection. In the spring breeder P. versicolor differences between localities both in abiotic factors, soil moisture and surface temperature, and biotic factors, reactions of prey species to abiotic factors, in spring and summer when the larvae are maturing contribute to the asynchronous fluctuations of numbers between subpopulations. In the autumn breeder C. melanocephalus possible differences in biotic factors between sites are outnumbered by the effects of winters with a higher or lower than normal amount of precipitation respectively. During a wet winter mortality among the larvae is much higher than during a dry winter. Over a 30-year period from 1954 to 1983, 975 live births were recorded for Japanese macaque females at the Iwatayama Monkey
Park, Arashiyama, Japan. Excluding unknown birth dates, primiparous mothers gave birth to 185 infants (182 cases with age
of mother known) and multiparous mothers gave birth to 723 infants (603 cases with age of mother known). The peak month of
birth was May with 52.3% of the total births occurring during the period. Multiparous females who had not given birth the
previous year did so earlier than multiparous females who had given birth the previous year and also earlier than primiparous
females. Among the females who had given birth the previous year, females whose infant had died gave birth earlier than females
who had reared an infant the previous year. The offspring sex ratio (1:0.97) was not significantly different from 1:1, and
revealed no consistent association with mother's age. Age-fecundity exhibited a humped curve. The annual birth rate was low
at the age of 4 years but increased thereafter, ranging between 46.7% and 69.0%, at between 5 and 19 years of age, but again
decreased for females between 20 and 25 years of age. Some old females displayed clear reproductive senescence. The infant
mortality within the first year of age was quite low (10.3%) and the neonatal (less than 1 month old) mortality rate accounted
for 49.0% of all infant deaths. There was no significant difference between the mortality rates of male and female infants.
A female's rank-class had no apparent effect on the annual birth rate, infant mortality, and offspring sex ratio. These long-term

Seven strains of the insect pathogenic fungus Verticillium lecanii have been examined in the Calliphora erythrocephala bioassay for the production, in surface culture on Czapek Dox medium, of insecticidal secondary metabolites. One strain which had lost its pathogenicity on storage yielded no active compounds. The remainder yielded dipicolinic acid (pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid) which was responsible for the insecticidal activity of acidic extracts. Detergents added to the rearing water of the molluscLymnaea induce a sharp mortality of all the animals of each experimental group after a variable delay, depending upon the nature of the detergent and its concentration.No important perturbation of the shell growth is noted with the cationic detergent; conversely a light decrease is observed with the anionic detergents and a very severe effect is induced by a commercial washing mixture.The fecundity is always reduced by the detergents: the number of egg-masses per snail and the number of eggs per mass are diversely changed according to the products.In many cases the egg fertility is decreased and the duration of embryogenesis is increased. In 1971, Crofton investigated patterns of distribution of Polymorphus minutus in the intermediate host, Gammarus pulex. Among his conclusions were: (1) P. minutus populations occur in patterns similar to negative binomial distributions, and (2) parasite-induced host mortality results in patterns similar to truncated (high end) negative binomial distributions. Those conclusions, however, were not tested by statistical analyses. To test Crofton's observations, Chi-square goodness of fit tests were applied to data used by Crofton and an additional two stations sampled by Hynes & Nicholas in 1963. Analyses were expanded to include five theoretical distributions, four patterns of host mortality and various rates of host mortality. Truncated forms of negative binomial, positive binomial and Poisson distributions were also investigated where nontruncated distributions failed to fit observed distributions. It was found that negative binomial distributions most frequently describe patterns of P. minutus distribution with the exception of one population described by Poisson and another by positive binomial distributions. Crofton's assumption that truncated distributions result from parasite-induced host mortality seems unlikely in light of those analyses. 相似文献

This article presents a multiple regression analysis of demographic and social data for 335 wards in 17 American cities in 1890. The most important findings are: (1) Density effects on mortality were uniformly positive and statistically significant; the magnitude of these effects was much greater for child mortality than for adult mortality; and child mortality was more sensitive to persons per dwelling than to persons per acre. (2) Unsanitary conditions, as measured by the city-specific typhoid fever death rate, significantly increased mortality and child mortality was much more sensitive in this respect than adult mortality. The dried peripheral area of pond Idumban (62 ha) increased from 3.2 ha in January to 3 1.9 ha in April. Pila globosa, which were abundant in the littoral area, did not commence aestivation during this period, perhaps due to low temperature and/or high dissolved oxygen content. The number of aestivating snails averaged 0.5/m2 in May, 1973 (3.6% of the total population) and it increased to 1.1/M2 in September (26.2%). Biomass of the snail increased from 3.5 to 19.9 g dry weight (including shell)/M2. Number of aestivating snails increased from 0.4/m2 (5.2% of the total population) in May 1974 to 0.8/m2 (11.1%) in July and the biomass from 4.1 g/m2 to 10.7 g/m2. Availability of dried area for aestivation increased from 5.3 to 23.7 ha in 1973 and from 13.5 to 30.2 ha in 1974.Monthly observations made on the marked snails forced to aestivate at 7.5, 15.0, 22.5 and 30.0 cm depth in the pond during May, revealed that temperature above 35°C and moisture below 5% were critical. Mortality and weight loss decreased in the snails forced to aestivate at increasing depth. Random observations indicated that 83% of the aestivating snails buried themselves at 15 cm depth in the pond. On the whole, 98,480 snails (592 Kg) and 115,270 (758 Kg) died during aestivation in 1973 and 1974 respectively. Of the total weight loss, the energy lost via metabolism contributed only a small fraction of 2.2% (12 Kg) and 2.1% (15 Kg) during these years. Considering the total aestivation area, the snails which succumbed averaged only 0.4/m2/year (2.5 g/m2/year). On an average, dry substance equivalent to about 2.6 mg dry weight/ g dry weight of snail/ day (3.7 gcal/ g live snail/ day) was lost on metabolism by the aestivating snails, i.e. the metabolic level of the aestivating snail was about 1 / 18th of that of the actively feeding snail. 相似文献

Aedes aegypti mosquitoes were adversely affected by infections of the filarial worm Brugia pahangi. Infected mosquitoes flew significantly shorter distances and showed marked reductions in total flight time during 24-hr flight mill tests compared to uninfected controls. Total flight range and duration flown by infected mosquitoes remained relatively constant throughout the infection process, while control mosquitoes flew further and longer with increasing time after their blood meal. Furthermore, a significantly greater number of infected mosquitoes either died or were rendered incapable of flight. Of flying and nonflying mosquitoes with 6-day-old or older infections dissected for parasite burdens, the nonflying group contained significantly more worms. Results of this study indicate that developing filarial larvae within this mosquito vector reduce its ability to survive and to transmit its infection by reducing its flight capabilities.
