Helianthus petiolaris andH. niveus are polytypic species which are morphologically distinct at the periphery of their ranges but intergrade in areas of sympatry.Helianthus niveus includes both annual and perennial members, whereasH. petiolaris is strictly annual. Chloroplast DNA and nuclear ribosomal DNA restriction site data were used to reconstruct the evolutionary history of populations of the two species. Cladistic analyses reveal the following: (1) neither species is monophyletic; (2) the annual habit is derived once in this complex; and (3) the region of morphological intergradation appears to be primary in origin. The significance of interbreeding versus common descent in defining species concepts is discussed in relation to the above cladistic analyses. 相似文献

We analysed breeding sounds of the two subspecies of South American Snipe Gallinago paraguaiae paraguaiae and Gallinago paraguaiae magellanica to determine whether they might be different species: loud vocalizations given on the ground, and the tail-generated Winnow given in aerial display. Sounds of the two taxa differ qualitatively and quantitatively. Both taxa utter two types of ground call. In G. p. paraguaiae, the calls are bouts of identical sound elements repeated rhythmically and slowly (about five elements per second (Hz)) or rapidly (about 11 Hz). One call of G. p. magellanica is qualitatively similar to those of G. p. paraguaiae but sound elements are repeated more slowly (about 3 Hz). However, its other call type differs strikingly: it is a bout of rhythmically repeated sound couplets, each containing two kinds of sound element. The Winnow of G. p. paraguaiae is a series of sound elements that gradually increase in duration and energy; by contrast, that of G. p. magellanica has two or more kinds of sound element that roughly alternate and are repeated as sets, imparting a stuttering quality. Sounds of the related Puna Snipe (Gallinago andina) resemble but differ quantitatively from those of G. p. paraguaiae. Differences in breeding sounds of G. p. paraguaiae and G. p. magellanica are strong and hold throughout their geographical range. Therefore we suggest that the two taxa be considered different species: G. paraguaiae east of the Andes in much of South America except Patagonia, and G. magellanica in central and southern Chile, Argentina east of the Andes across Patagonia, and Falklands/Malvinas. 相似文献

The two subspecies of the black spider monkey, Ateles paniscus paniscus and A. p. chamek, can be distinguished by their chromosome number, 2n = 32 in the former and 2n = 34 in the latter. This difference most probably is the result of a tandem fusion between chromosomes 4 and 13 of the original Ateles karyotype (2n = 34) to form a unique metacentric chromosome in A. p. paniscus. Further differences between the subspecies concern the presence of additional interstial or terminal C-bands in chromosomes 3, 5, and 12 of A. p. paniscus. A third difference is that chromosome 12 is metacentric in A. p. paniscus but is submetacentric in A. p. chamek. A. p. chamek shows dimorphisms caused by pericentric inversions in pairs 1, 5, 6, and 7 as well as in the Y chromosome. Since the dimorphisms in pairs 5 and 7 are only found in homozygous condition, they may indicate the existence of geographic variation within this subspecies. Differences in external characteristics possibly reflect these chromosomal difference. The necessity to lend A. p. paniscus full specific status should be considered, since karyologically this is the most distinct one of all forms of Ateles. In captive breeding A. p. paniscus should evidently be treated as a separate population, as hybridization with A. p. chamek may result in offspring with reduced fertility. The intra-subspecific karyological variation in A. p. chamek and its possible consequences for taxonomy and captive breeding require further investigation. 相似文献

A unifying theory for systematic analysis states that a number of methods should be used jointly to cope with various kinds of data; also that groups should be as consistent as possible, be made with least information loss, and where needed, be polythetic. A test of relationship, homogeneity, can use various kinds of data. It can take account of the internal variation of aggregate items such as genera. It can give due emphasis to smaller clusters that have likely important contexts of external items. It helps in analysing trends, cores and hazes in dendrograms. A proposed detector for formal groups can be based on measures of isolation, identifiability and inclusiveness. Non-mathematical, inter-item reaction tests such as hybridization and serology can also be used in grouping. All relationship data are used polythetically to reveal natural groups. This leads to a unified informational concept for taxa. This is more useful than the biological species concept that is restricted to inter-breeding data. All the methods appear to be analogues of the powerful human grouping instinct. The resulting compatibility is important as precise methods are needed mainly when the data are too complex for the mind to use reliably. Cladograms can be made by self-graded deweighting of homogeneity and agglomerative clustering. Unlike classical cladistics this can reveal any polythetic group. Finding the derived states for making cladograms is often much too hypothetical for a fully cladistic approach to be properly precise. Instead, where the evidence is weak, a milder strength of graded deweighting is used for the cladistic properties, which help to show relationships along with the others. Axiomatic failures of other classes of grouping methods are discussed. Unavoidable remnants of instinctive processing lower the precision of all the methods. The Uniter computer program, based on the theory, is tested with finely graded values of artificially ‘evolved’ items and with coarsely coded cladistic data. The results show that with natural data, the program should act as a fairly sensitive probe of past evolutionary branching. Cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) are expressed on an insect's cuticle and are one of the major factors allowing insects to identify members of their own species, colony and gender. As a result of their species‐specificity, CHCs are increasingly used to delimit species in addition to more conventional methods, such as morphology or genetic markers, and so play an important role in chemotaxonomy. Species vary in the type of CHCs that they produce, as well as in the relative quantities of shared compounds. This review summarizes not only how taxonomists may differentiate between species based on CHC profiles, but also the incentive for using CHC composition as taxonomic tool. Benefits regarding the identification of cryptic species and early signs of reproductive isolation are then discussed, giving examples from studies of taxonomy, behaviour and biosynthesis. For taxonomic characters to reliably indicate species boundaries, their limitations need to be known. Potential problems caused by environmental effects, intra‐species variation in profiles and other technical issues are highlighted, and suggestions are made regarding their avoidance. It remains a challenge to determine the variation beyond which two species can be called independent; a problem shared by most methods of delimitation. All but one have been isolated from the atmosphere of las Palmas, capital city of the island of Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, Spain). Two euplanktonic ciliates, Urotricha psenneri n. sp. (Prostomatida) and Amphileptus piger (Vuxanovici, 1962) n. comb. (Pleurostomatida), were discovered in the surface plankton of the oligotrophic Lake Traunsee in Austria. Their morphology and infraciliature were studied in live cells as well as in specimens impregnated with protargol and silver nitrate. Urotricha psenneri is a small urotrichid, less than 50 microm length and with a single caudal cilium. It is unique in having (i) a massive oral basket projecting as a conspicuous bulge with cylindrical microfibrillar annulus and (ii) a curved brosse row 1 in the broad, barren circumoral area. Amphileptus piger (Vuxanovici, 1962) is about 55 x 13 microm in vivo, has two macronuclear nodules with a single micronucleus in between in the posterior body half, has a single contractile vacuole with a terminal excretory pore, and few, but thick and thus highly conspicuous extrusomes. The amphileptid ciliary pattern (spica) is difficult to recognise due to the widely spaced basal bodies. 相似文献

This revision of the classification of unicellular eukaryotes updates that of Levine et al. (1980) for the protozoa and expands it to include other protists. Whereas the previous revision was primarily to incorporate the results of ultrastructural studies, this revision incorporates results from both ultrastructural research since 1980 and molecular phylogenetic studies. We propose a scheme that is based on nameless ranked systematics. The vocabulary of the taxonomy is updated, particularly to clarify the naming of groups that have been repositioned. We recognize six clusters of eukaryotes that may represent the basic groupings similar to traditional "kingdoms." The multicellular lineages emerged from within monophyletic protist lineages: animals and fungi from Opisthokonta, plants from Archaeplastida, and brown algae from Stramenopiles. 相似文献

One hundred and seventeen streptosporangia from soil were compared with marker strains of the familyStreptosporangiaceae for many phenotypic properties. The data were examined using the Jaccard, pattern and simple matching coefficients with clustering achieved using average, complete and single linkage algorithms. Particular confidence was placed in the product of the pattern, average linkage analysis given the sharp definition of aggregate groups and clusters and a combination of low test error and high cophenetic correlation values. The test strains were assigned to five aggregate groups that were equated with the generaStreptosporangium (group A),Microbispora (group B),Planobispora andPlanomonospora (Group C),Kutzneria (neéStreptosporangium viridogriseum (group D), andMicrotetraspora (group E). The streptosporangia, both isolates and marker strains, were assigned to 5 major, 7 minor and 18 single membered clusters. Representative streptosporangia examined for chemical markers were characterised by the presence ofmeso-diaminopimelic acid in whole-organism hydrolysates, complex mixtures of straight- and branched chain fatty acids, di- and tetrahydrogenated menaquinones as predominant isoprenologues, and complex polar lipid patterns containing diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylmethylethanolamine, phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylinositol mannosides and uncharacterised components. The chemical and numerical data support the taxonomic integrity of the validly described species ofStreptosporangium and suggest that the genus is markedly underspeciated. 相似文献
