The various classifications of the orchid tribeNeottieae are reviewed and a new classification is proposed that divides the tribe into three subtribes,Neottiinae, Limodorinae, andCephalantherinae, based primarily on characters of the column (gynostemium). A cladistic analysis illustrates that these three subtribes are more closely related to one another than either is to any other group in subfam.Neottioideae, although there are very few apomorphic characters for the tribe. Pollination biology is also discussed showing links between breeding systems and distribution. There is also a possible role between column and labellum morphology and the emergence of a deceptive pollination syndrome from one of reward.  相似文献

Summary Much ecological theory assumes that the number of species that can coexist (by species packing) is limited, because competitive exclusion occurs when any pair of species within a guild is too similar — species saturation or niche limitation. If such niche limitation occurs, the proportion of species in each guild should be relatively constant — guild proportionality. This concept is applied to the guilds represented by strata in a forest. A method is produced, and used to examine a New Zealand temperate rain forest. Most strata showed no deviation from a null model of no niche limitation, i.e. no tendency to guild proportionality. The proportion of lianes was more variable than in the null model, tending to be inversely related to the proportion of epiphytes, Canopy tree proportion was significantly more constant than in the null model, but this could be interpreted as a limit caused by the size of a canopy tree individual.  相似文献

Summary The population dynamics of a slow- and a fast-growing strain of the rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus are compared. Rotifers were grown in steady-states, at various specific growth rates (), in both two-stage chemostat and turbidostat cultures on the green alga Chlorella pyrenoidosa. Population variables, including specific ingestion (I), loss (L) and filtration (F) rates, yield (Y), production (P) and half-saturation coefficient of growth (K g), were calculated using a growth model based on saturation kinetics. I, L, F and K g were shown to be higher and Y and P lower for the fast-growing strain. Differences between the two strains with regard to these variables may represent tradeoffs associated with the faster potential growth rate. Steady-state relationships between these values and for the fast-growing strain, however, deviated from model predictions which suggest a possible shift from carbon to non-carbon growth limitation.  相似文献

Summary The orchid Prasophyllum fimbria is pollinated by nectar-feeding native bees and wasps. The pollinia are patially separated from the viscidium by a stipe so that pollinia can be labelled with coloured histochemical stains without interfering with pollinarium removal. Pollen flow was monitored by following the movement of the coloured pollen in several populations of P. fimbria in Western Australia. Statistical analysis confirmed that pollen labelling did not interfere with pollinarium removal or subsequent pollination of the labelled flower. Fifty eight labelled pollinaria were removed by vectors from 16 test spikes, with a total of 125 flowers on 47 spikes receiving labelled pollen. An average of 2 flowers received pollen for every pollinium removed but up to 6 flowers received pollen from a single collinium. No significant differences between mean vector flights and pollen flow distances were detected. On average, geitonogamous transfers only accounted for 22% of all pollinations. This is a simple and inexpensive technique for the direct labelling of pollen with minimal disruption to the pollination system and may have applications in other plant families.  相似文献

Three field experiments were performed in Lake Lacawac, PA to determine the importance of potentially limiting nutrients relative to other factors (grazing, depth) in structuring shallow water algal periphyton communities. All three experiments measured periphyton growth (as chlorophyll-a, AFDM or biovolumes of the algal taxa) on artificial clay flower pot substrates which released specified nutrients to their outer surfaces.Control of standing crop by nutrient supply rate vs. grazing was examined in Expt. I. Substrates releasing excess N and P, together with one of 4 levels of C (as bicarbonate) were placed either inside or outside exclosures designed to reduce grazer densities. Chlorophyll-a rose from 1.1–25.6 µg.cm–2, and some dominant taxa (e.g., Oedogonium, Nostoc, Anacystis) were replaced by others (e.g., Scenedesmus, Cryptomonas) as bicarbonate supply increased. Reductions in invertebrate density did not significantly affect chlorophyll-a at any of the nutrient levels.Reasons for the species shift were further evaluated in Expt. II, using a minielectrode to measure the elevation of pH within the periphyton mat through photosynthetic utilization of bicarbonate. The pH adjacent to pots diffusing N, P and large quantities of bicarbonate, and supporting high chlorophyll-a densities of 32 µg cm–2, averaged 10.0 compared to 6.3 in the water column. Pots diffusing only N and P supported 0.7 µg chlorophyll-a cm–2 and elevated pH to 8.2. We suspect that bicarbonate addition favored efficient bicarbonate users (e.g., Scenedesmus), while inhibiting other taxa (e.g., Oedogonium) because of the attendant high pH.Expt. III was designed to test effects of depth (0.1 m vs. 0.5 m) and N (NH4 + vs. NO3 ) upon the growth response to bicarbonate observed in Expts. I and II. Similar standing crop and species composition were noted on pots at 0.1 m vs. 0.5 m. Enrichment with NH4 + vs. NO3 also appeared to have little effect upon the periphyton community.Shallow water periphyton communities in Lake Lacawac, when supplied with sufficient N and P, appear to show a distinctive response to increasing bicarbonate concentration and pH which is robust to moderate variation in grazer densities, distance from the water surface, and the form of N enrichment.  相似文献

Transitions in the growth limiting factor from light (I) to nitrogen (N) and vice versa caused changes in geosmin production, protein and carbohydrate content, and the synthesis of pigments such as chlorophyll a (Chl a), phycobiliproteins (PBPs), and -carotene of the cyanobacterium Oscillatoria brevis. Following IN transition the first 150h, the decrease in protein content was compensated for by an increase of carbohydrates, and thereby, a constant biomass level was maintained in this period. Thereafter, biimass dropped to 15% of its initial level. A decrease in geosmin and pigment content was observed during transition from IN-limited growth. However, geosmin increased relative to phytol (Chl a) and -carotene which may indicate that a lowered demand for phytol and -carotene during N-limited growth allows isoprenoid precursors to be directed to geosmin rather than to pigment synthesis. Synthesis of Chl a and -carotene at the expense of geosmin was suggested for the observed start of increase in geosmin production only at the time that Chl a and -carotene had reached their I-limited steady state. Transition from nitrogen to light limited growth caused an acceleration of metabolism shown by a rapid decrease in carbohydrate content accompanied by an increase in protein content. The growth rate of the organisms temporarily exceeded the dilution rate of the culture and the biomass level increased 6-fold. The oil-bee/oil-flower relationships: parallelism and other aspects of their evolution in space and time A survey is given of our present knowledge and existing hypotheses concerning the biogeography, history, and phylogeny of plant taxa yielding fatty oil as a floral reward, and of the bee genera involved in their pollination. Four syngenetic complexes of the symbiosis arose convergently: The neotropical, the paleotropical, the holarctic, and the capensic complex. On the basis of the mutual structural adaptations of bees and flowers it is concluded that, in addition, parallelism within related groups as a result of a common tendency to develop the respective organs, has played an important role in the evolution of the oil-based floral interrelationships.  相似文献

The response of Acinetobacter strain 210A to low phosphate concentrations was investigated in P- or C-limited chemostat cultures. The organism accumulated poly--hydroxybutyric acid under P-deprivation, at phosphate concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 0.7 mM. The amount of biomass was proportional to the phosphate concentration in the medium and no polyphosphate was formed. When shifting a culture from P- to C-limitation phosphate was accumulated as polyphosphate. No poly--hydroxybutyrate could be detected in these cells. The amount of polyphosphate in the cell showed a hysteresis. When cultures were shifted from low to high phosphate concentrations, polyphosphate reached a maximum of about 60 mg P per gram of dry weight at about 3 times excess phosphate (ca. 2.5 mM Pi). It decreased to 45 mg P per gram dry weight at approximately 5 times the phosphate needed for growth (ca. 3.5 mM Pi). In the reverse case (high to low) polyphosphate did never exceed 45 mg P per gram dry weight. The specific activities of alkaline phosphatase and the phosphate uptake system were induced at residual Pi concentrations below the detection limit (<10 M). The specific uptake rate followed also a hysteresis.   • 1 For the understanding of the influence of natural selection on the persistence of host selection behaviour in populations of Drosophila parasitoids it is important to know whether parasitoids will become time- or egg-limited. We investigated whether the Drosophila parasitoid Leptopilina clavipes (Hartig) meets egg- or time-limited conditions in the field.
  • 2 To this end the following aspects of the parasitoid's life were studied: egg load at emergence, travelling velocity between patches, patch residence times, oviposition rates and life expectancy. Together with the results from earlier studies on host and patch distributions, this formed the input of a ‘Monte Carlo’ simulation model, in which the life history of an individual parasitoid can be traced.
  • 3 The simulations revealed that under the conditions found in the field 12.9% of the parasitoid population is egg-limited. The model was also run for a number of scenarios which reflect ‘good’ or ‘bad’ circumstances. In most cases a significant proportion of the parasitoid population proved to be egg-limited.
  • 4 For the measurement of travelling velocities and patch residence times a marking method, especially applicable to small-sized parasitoids such as L.clavipes, is described. Marking did not affect survival, host habitat location or host detection rate. Parasitoids were found to be attracted to the odour of fruit-bodies of Phallus impudicus, the most important breeding substrate of their hosts.

Floral scents of male and female inflorescences of three dioeciousSalix species were collected by head-space adsorption, and analysed by GC-MS. InSalix caprea andS. cinerea 1,4-dimethoxy benzene was the main compound, and male and female scents showed a high degree of resemblance. No dominant compound was found inS. repens and malefemale scent similarity was low. Floral scent inSalix is likely a strong orientation cue, guiding pollinators between male and female plants ensuring pollen transfer and pollination. We suggest that a high degree of male-female floral scent resemblance is coupled to a high degree of insect pollination. Floral scent does not promote reproductive isolation betweenS. caprea andS. cinerea.  相似文献
