Cryptic diversity in a fig wasp community—morphologically differentiated species are sympatric but cryptic species are parapatric

A key debate in ecology centres on the relative importance of niche and neutral processes in determining patterns of community assembly with particular focus on whether ecologically similar species with similar functional traits are able to coexist. Meanwhile, molecular studies are increasingly revealing morphologically indistinguishable cryptic species with presumably similar ecological roles. Determining the geographic distribution of such cryptic species provides opportunities to contrast predictions of niche vs. neutral models. Discovery of sympatric cryptic species increases alpha diversity and supports neutral models, while documentation of allopatric/parapatric cryptic species increases beta diversity and supports niche models. We tested these predictions using morphological and molecular data, coupled with environmental niche modelling analyses, of a fig wasp community along its 2700‐km latitudinal range. Molecular methods increased previous species diversity estimates from eight to eleven species, revealing morphologically cryptic species in each of the four wasp genera studied. Congeneric species pairs that were differentiated by a key morphological functional trait (ovipositor length) coexisted sympatrically over large areas. In contrast, morphologically similar species, with similar ovipositor lengths, typically showed parapatric ranges with very little overlap. Despite parapatric ranges, environmental niche models of cryptic congeneric pairs indicate large regions of potential sympatry, suggesting that competitive processes are important in determining the distributions of ecologically similar species. Pollen beetles (Meligethes spp.; Coleoptera: Nitiduliae) are a major pest of oilseed rape, Brassica napus L. (Brassicaceae) in northern Europe. Phradis interstitialis Thomson, P. morionellus Holmgr., and Tersilochus heterocerus Thomson (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) are among the most frequent pollen beetle parasitoids. These three species differ in temporal occurrence, as well as in preferred host stage. The behavioural responses of female parasitoids to odours from oilseed rape at bud and flowering stage were evaluated in two‐choice experiments. The role of visual stimuli was examined by combining green and yellow colours with odour stimuli. All three species were attracted to odours from the bud stage of oilseed rape. Tersilochus heterocerus was attracted to odours of flowering rape, but the two Phradis species avoided the flower odours. However, when the odours of flowering rape were combined with yellow, and odours of the bud stage were combined with green, P. interstitialis was equally attracted to both stimuli, and T. heterocerus showed an increased preference for flower odours, while no effect of colours could be found in P. morionellus. The observed differences in responses between the parasitoids may reflect differences in their biology and may be involved in the niche segregation of these often coexisting species. The volatile blends released from the two phenological stages were identified and compared. Clearly, odours can be reliable cues for differentiating between oilseed rape in the bud and flowering stage. Of 20 identified compounds, 18 were released at a significantly higher rate from flowering plants. The terpenes sabinene, myrcene, limonene, and (E,E)‐α‐farnesene were the dominant volatiles in the bud and flower headspace. Genetic relatedness in early associations of Polistes dominulus: from related to unrelated helpers 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Indirect benefits obtained through the reproduction of relatives are fundamental in the formation and maintenance of groups. Here, we examine the hypothesis that females of the temperate paper wasp Polistes dominulus preferentially form groups with close relatives. Genetic relatedness data were obtained for 180 groups of females collected at the early stages of the nesting cycle of a large population of P. dominulus in two sites in southwestern Spain. Average within-group relatedness values ranged from 0.189 to 0.491. Foundresses on early nests were significantly more closely related than females in winter aggregations or in stable groups (just before workers emerged). Within-group relatedness values were independent of group size. The vast majority of worker-producing nests ( c . 85%) had one or more females that were unrelated (or distantly related) to the remaining members of the group. These results provide further support to the hypothesis that indirect fitness benefits alone are unlikely to explain why P. dominulus foundresses form cooperative associations. 相似文献

【目的】榕树与传粉榕小蜂体系是协同进化、专性传粉的经典系统,每种榕树上一般还生活有种类丰富、数目众多的非传粉榕小蜂。在选择压力下,榕小蜂为在榕果内生存产生了明显的适应性形态。触角感受器是昆虫通讯系统的单元,其形态是反映生态和进化适应性的最佳特征之一。本文旨在对中国部分传粉和非传粉榕小蜂的触角感受器的形态多样性和进化适应性进行系统研究。【方法】对来源于海南和云南15种榕树上24种榕小蜂54个型的触角感受器形态进行了扫描电镜观察,基于现有的分子系统发育树,对传粉榕小蜂触角感受器的形态特征进行了性状演化分析,并对榕小蜂的形态特征进行了进化适应性分析。【结果】榕小蜂触角感受器普遍存在雌雄二型现象。雌蜂触角感受器种类有毛状、锥状、板状、刺状、钟形、腔锥状和栓锥状等,数目丰富,并且进果产卵的传粉雌蜂和果外产卵的非传粉雌蜂之间、进果产卵的传粉雌蜂和进果产卵的非传粉雌蜂之间在形态上存在差异。传粉雄蜂和不具有雄性多型现象的非传粉雄蜂触角感受器极为退化,具有雄性多型的非传粉雄蜂触角感受器形态在种内不具有显著差异。性状演化分析表明进化路径相当复杂,可能存在多次独立进化过程。触角感受器的形态类型与其进化适应性相关。【结论】榕小蜂触角感受器类型多样,形态变化丰富,并为适应榕果内的生存而产生了进化适应性特点。雌蜂和雄蜂在榕果内受到了完全不同的选择压力,行使不同的生态功能,从而产生了不同的适应性形态。不同的适应性形态可能与雌蜂不同的产卵行为、雄蜂不同的交配策略具有一定联系。该文是首次对中国榕小蜂触角感受器形态进行系统研究的报道,有助于更好地理解榕小蜂的形态特征、进化路线、行为策略和生态关系。 相似文献

As one of the most specialized pollination syndromes, the fig (Ficus)–fig wasp (Agaonidae) mutualism can shed light on how pollinator behaviour and specificity affect plant diversification through processes such as reproductive isolation and hybridization. Pollinator sharing among species has important implications for Ficus species delimitation and the evolutionary history of the mutualism. Although agaonid wasp pollinators are known to visit more than one host species in monoecious figs, pollinator sharing has yet to be documented in dioecious figs. The present study investigated the frequency of pollinator sharing among sympatric, closely‐related dioecious figs in Ficus sections Sycocarpus and Sycidium. Molecular and morphological species identification established the associations between pollinating agaonid wasp species and host fig species. Cytochrome oxidase I was sequenced from 372 Ceratosolen pollinators of Ficus section Sycocarpus and 210 Kradibia pollinators of Ficus section Sycidium. The association between fig species and morphologically distinct clades of pollinator haplotypes was predominantly one‐to‐one. In Ceratosolen, six of 372 pollinators (1.5%) visited fig species other than the predominant host. No pollinator sharing was detected between the two Sycidium host species, although a rare hybrid shared Kradibia pollinators with both parental species. These findings point to low rates of pollinator sharing among closely‐related dioecious fig species in sympatry, and perhaps lower rates than among monoecious figs. Such rare events could be evolutionarily important as mechanisms for gene flow among fig species. Tiphia vernalis Rohwer and Tiphia popilliavora Rohwer were introduced as biocontrol agents against Japanese beetles (Popillia japonica Newman) and oriental beetles (Anomala orientalis Waterhouse). Studies have shown that under field conditions, T. vernalis parasitize Japanese beetles more often than oriental beetles. This study was done to understand how tiphiid wasps handle the two different host species and the influence of host defensive behaviors on the oviposition process of tiphiid wasps. The preovipositional behaviors performed by Tiphia wasps included: stinging, examining, moving soil, kneading, host-feeding, and host scraping. The frequency, sequence, and total time spent on each behavior before oviposition were scored and compared between two host species. The sequence and frequency of preovipositional behaviors performed by both Tiphia wasps did not show a difference between the two host species. However, female T. vernalis spent significantly longer time trying to sting oriental beetles than Japanese beetles in order to paralyze them. The time T. popilliavora spent on prestinging behaviors did not show a difference between Japanese and oriental beetles. The defensive behaviors performed by Japanese and oriental beetle grubs included: vigorous movements, rubbing their abdomen or head against the wasp’s abdomen, and biting at the attacking wasp. The frequency and total time spent on each defensive behavior was scored and compared between two host species. Overwintered, third instar oriental beetle grubs spent significantly longer time on defensive behaviors when they were attacked by T. vernalis which likely cause wasps to spend longer time trying to sting oriental beetle grubs. The active host resistance gained through behavioral defenses could make oriental beetle grubs less susceptible to T. vernalis attack than Japanese beetle grubs, especially under field conditions. Younger grubs attacked by T. popilliavora did not exhibit these differences. 相似文献
