Review of the traditional separation of global Ordovician conodont distribution into the North American Midcontinent Province (NAMP) and North Atlantic Province (NAP) reveals a confusing variety of concepts and definitions that hinder biogeographic analysis. Use of this twofold scheme and its subsequent variants should be­discontinued in favour of the more detailed divisions proposed here. Major biogeographical entities of the Shallow-Sea and Open-Sea Realms, separated by the shelf-slope break, are both further subdivisible into Tropical, Temperate and Cold Domains. In the Cold domains, faunal differences between the two Realms and their subdivisions are not easily discernible, since biofacies zones and different habitats were highly condensed. Faunal differences are amplified in the tropical regions, where the North American Midcontinent Province and North Atlantic Province were originally defined. Recognition of endemic taxa is essential for finer classification within domains of the Shallow-Sea Realm (SSR). Our preliminary analysis of Early Ordovician conodont distribution identifies the Laurentian Province (in the Tropical Domain), Australian­(Tropical Domain), North China (Tropical Domain), South China (Temperate Domain), Argentine Precordillera (Temperate Domain) and Balto-Scandian Province (in the Cold Domain). The Open-Sea Realm (OSR) is dominated by cosmopolitan and widespread taxa, and formal subdivision at provincial level is yet to be achieved. The North Atlantic Province encompasses both the Open-Sea Realm and the Temperate and Cold Domains of the Shallow-Sea Realm. The North American Midcontinent Province sensu stricto is more or less equivalent to the Laurentian Province, representing shallow-water regions fringing Laurentia; in a broader sense the North American Midcontinent Province includes all provinces of the Tropical Domain within the Shallow-Sea Realm.  相似文献

Ozarkodinid conodonts were one of the most successful groups of agnathan vertebrates. Only the oropharyngeal feeding apparatus of conodonts was mineralized, and the skeletal elements were generally disarticulated on the death and decay of the body. Occasionally, however, they were preserved in association as ''natural assemblages'', fossilized in situ after post-mortem collapse of the apparatus. From analysis of element arrangement in natural assemblages of Idiognathodus from the Pennsylvanian of Illinois we have produced a precise scale model of the feeding apparatus of ozarkodinid conodonts. At the front lay an axial Sa element, flanked by two groups of four close-set elongate Sb and Sc elements which were inclined obliquely inwards and forwards; above these elements lay a pair of arched and inward pointing M elements. Behind the S-M array lay transversely oriented and bilaterally opposed Pb and Pa elements. Our model sheds new light on food acquisition in conodonts. We propose that the anterior S and M elements of ozarkodinid conodonts were attached to cartilaginous plates. In order for the animal to feed, these plates were first everted, and then drawn back and upward over the anterior edge of an underlying cartilage. These movements produced a highly effective grasping action, the cusps and denticles of the elements converging to grab and impale any food item that lay anterior to the open array. According to this hypothesis, the anterior part of the conodont apparatus is comparable to, and possibly homologous with, the lingual apparatus of extant agnathans; the elements themselves, however, have no direct homologues. <br>  相似文献

The study of the distribution of Ostracode superfamiliesin the Dinantian of Northern France, Belgium and South Canadian Rockies leads us to establish a new Bairdiacean and Paraparchitacean ecozone. In a confined environment Kloedenellacea become more important. This association is characteristic of carbonate shelf sedimentation in warm climatic conditions. The late Wenlock is characterized by two global regressive‐transgressive eustatic cycles in association with a double‐peaked positive carbon isotope excursion. The onset of the excursion coincides with an extinction event affecting graptolites (the lundgreni event) and proposed to affect conodonts (the Mulde Event) and proliferation of non‐skeletal carbonates. In order to test the hypothesized relationships between eustatic and ecological changes, the tropical carbonate Homerian succession in Podolia has been examined with respect to conodont, sequence and δ13C stratigraphy. Four depositional sequences (DS) have been identified. The onset of the δ13C excursion occurs at the boundary between DS1 and DS2, corresponding to a forced regression of proposed glacioeustatic origin. The following rapid eustatic transgression associated with the highest δ13C values of 5.2‰ includes a higher‐order shallowing episode recorded in Podolia as normal regression and a boundary between DS2 and DS3. This interval is distinguished by the presence of oncoids and thrombolitic buildups. The latest Wenlock eustatic fall and the corresponding second peak of the δ13C excursion corresponds in Podolia to a stratigraphic gap. The first δ13C peak (top of DS1 and DS2) corresponds to the O. bohemica longa conodont Zone, the interval between the two peaks (DS3) – to K. ortus absidata and C. murchisoni zones, and DS4 is tentatively placed in the lowermost Ludlow Series. The record of relative sea‐level changes in Podolia is consistent with reconstructions based on successions in England and Sweden. The moderate drop in conodont taxonomic richness may reflect the primary depositional control over their proposed extinction.  相似文献

Radiolarians are usually abundant in chert sequences and they have thus been widely used for the biostratigraphy of deep-water sediments. However, there are many difficulties in the correlation of radiolarian biostratigraphic schemes with the standard conodont zones. In this study, 21 radiolarian species were extracted from the Gufeng Formation that crops out in the Luojiaba (LJB) section (western Hubei, China), together with 5 co-occurring conodont species. In this way, it is the first time that the Pseudoalbaillella globosa, Follicucullus monacanthus and F. scholasticus radiolarian zones can be directly correlated with the Jinogondolella nankingensis gracilis, J. aserrata and J. postserrata conodont zones. Accordingly, the 3 radiolarians zones are now firmly correlated with the Roadian to middle Capitanian interval (Middle Permian).  相似文献

在郧县人遗址中发现的石核占整个遗址石制品总数的26%。虽然数量仅77件,但从石核上可以看出打片以锤击法为主,采用硬锤直接打击。其利用率不高。石核的打片长度基本上只占该台面周长的一半以下,多在台面的一个边打片,剥片面上的石片疤多为单层,有些打下一块石片后就不再继续打片了。  相似文献

Successions of the Slovenian Basin structurally belong to the easternmost Southern Alps. During the Late Triassic, they were part of the Adriatic continental margin. Norian–Rhaetian successions of the Slovenian Basin are characterized mainly by dolomite of the Bača Dolomite Formation. However, in the northern part of the basin, Late Triassic limestone is preserved above Bača Dolomite Formation and is formalized as the Slatnik Formation. It is composed of hemipelagic limestone alternating with resedimented limestones. The succession documents an upward progradation of the slope environment composed of three high-frequency cycles. Most prominent progradation is referred to the second, i.e., Early Rhaetian cycle. The Slatnik Formation ends with thin-bedded hemipelagic limestone that records the end-Triassic productivity crisis, or rapid sea-level fall. The overlying resedimented limestones of the Early Jurassic Krikov Formation, document the recovery of production and shedding from the adjacent carbonate platform.  相似文献

The Late Jurassic succession of Mount Rettenstein (central Northern Calcareous Alps, Austria) is unique in comparison to all other sections known in the Northern Calcareous Alps because it provides the oldest coexistence of radiolarite basin sedimentation with contemporaneous shallow-water carbonate intercalations. An up to 3.5-m-thick debris flow made up of shallow-water carbonate detritus with a radiolaritic matrix is overlain by thin (calcareous) radiolarite, followed by several hundreds of meters of shallow-water carbonates of the Plassen Formation. Benthic foraminifers (Labyrinthia mirabilis Weynschenk and Alveosepta aff. jaccardi) and the radiolarian associations indicate a depositional age of both the debris flow and the basal Plassen Formation around the boundary of Middle/Late Oxfordian resp. in the Late Oxfordian. This is as yet the first unambiguous evidence of Oxfordian shallow-water sedimentation in the Northern Calcareous Alps. This early neritic stage with the settlement of ooid bars and coral-stromatoporoid-reefs, evidenced by the debris flow resediments in siliceous basin sedimentation, is followed by the definite, rapid progradation of the actual Late Oxfordian/Kimmeridgian–Berriasian Plassen Carbonate Platform with its steep slope configuration. Assumably, this evolution was steered by a mixture of both global environmental and regional tectonic constraints.  相似文献
