The Plant Vigor Hypothesis (PVH) proposes that natural selection on female oviposition choice results from higher fitness
of larvae on more vigorous and larger plant modules. For six consecutive years we tested the PVH predictions by investigating
the effect of shoot size of Bauhinia brevipes (Fabaceae) on the oviposition preference and offspring survival of the gall-midge Schizomyia macrocapillata (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae). Additionally, we analyzed the effects of bottom-up and top-down mortality forces on the system.
The hypersensitive reaction (bottom-up effect) accounted for more than 90% larval mortality of S.
macrocapillata, making available few galls to be found and killed by natural enemies (top-down effect). Smaller shoots were always more
abundant while longer shoots were rare. Nevertheless, the percent number of galls induced by S.
macrocapillata was up to 10-fold greater on the largest shoots, corroborating the preference prediction of the PVH. Schizomyia macrocapillata should use over-exploit larger shoots to maximize the preference for, and consequently increase the performance on these
shoots. Our results partially support the performance prediction of the PVH: (1) the observed survival was higher than expected
on longer shoots, and (2) the ratio of survival per shoot was positively related with shoot length only in 2 years. Thus,
we found a link between female preference and larval performance on large-sized shoots, at least in some years. The gall-midge
attack pattern in this study might be an evolved response to maximize the female preference and increased larval performance

Suppression of plant parasitic nematodes with nematode predators, parasites or antagonists is an eco-friendly approach than the toxic chemicals. In a study, soil borne fungi from the rhizosphere of major spice crops were collected from diverse cropping systems prevailing in three southern states of India. A series of in vitro studies were conducted using 73 freshly collected fungal isolates and 76 isolates obtained from other sources. Out of this 67 isolates were not parasitic on females of root-knot nematodes whereas 115 isolates, though colonized the egg masses, did not show any signs of parasitism on nematode eggs. Fifty-nine isolates showed 50-90% inhibition in egg hatch. Pochonia chlamydospora, Verticillium lecanii, Paecilomyces lilacinus, and few isolates of Trichoderma spp. showed >25% parasitism on root-knot nematode eggs. The most promising isolates in this study were one isolate each of Aspergillus (F.45), Fusarium (F.47), and Penicillium (F.59); three each isolates of Trichoderma (F.3, F.52, and F.60) and Pochonia (F.30 and Vc.3) Verticillium (Vl); and two isolates of fungi that could not be identified (F.28 and F.62). Parasitism by Aspergillus tamarii, Aspergillus ustus, Drechslera sp., Humicola sp., and Scopulariopsis sp. on root-knot nematode eggs or females, reported in the present study, are new reports. 相似文献

Transpiration, xylem water potential and water channel activity were studied in developing stolons and leaves of strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) subjected to drought or flooding, together with morphological studies of their stomata and other surface structures. Stolons had 0.12 stomata mm–2 and a transpiration rate of 0.6 mmol H2O m–2 s–1, while the leaves had 300 stomata mm–2 and a transpiration rate of 5.6 mmol H2O m–2 s–1. Midday water potentials of stolons were always less negative than in leaves enabling nutrient ion and water transport via or to the strawberry stolons. Drought stress, but not flooding, decreased stolon and leaf water potential from –0.7 to –1 MPa and from –1 to –2 MPa, respectively, with a concomitant reduction in stomatal conductance from 75 to 30 mmol H2O m–2 s–1. However, leaf water potentials remained unchanged after flooding. Similarly, membrane vesicles derived from stolons of flooded strawberry plants showed no change in water channel activity. In these stolons, turgor may be preserved by maintaining root pressure, an electrochemical and ion gradient and xylem differentiation, assuming water channels remain open. By contrast, water channel activity was reduced in stolons of drought stressed strawberry plants. In every case, the effect of flooding on water relations of strawberry stolons and leaves was less pronounced than that of drought which cannot be explained by increased ABA. Stomatal closure under drought could be attributed to increased delivery of ABA from roots to the leaves. However, stomata closed more rapidly in leaves of flooded strawberry despite ABA delivery from the roots in the xylem to the leaves being strongly depressed. This stomatal closure under flooding may be due to release of stress ethylene. In the relative absence of stomata from the stolons, cellular (apoplastic) water transport in strawberry stolons was primarily driven by water channel activity with a gradient from the tip of the stolon to the base, concomitant with xylem differentiation and decreased water transport potential from the stolon tip to its base. Strigolactones play crucial roles in regulating plant architecture and development, as endogenous hormones, and orchestrating symbiotic interactions with fungi and parasitic plants, as components of root exudates. rac-GR24 is currently the most widely used strigolactone analog and serves as a reference compound in investigating the action of strigolactones. In this study, we evaluated a suite of debranones and found that 2-nitrodebranone (2NOD) exhibited higher biological activity than rac-GR24 in various aspects of plant growth and development in Arabidopsis, including hypocotyl elongation inhibition, root hair promotion and senescence acceleration. The enhanced activity of 2NOD in promoting AtD14–SMXL7 and AtD14–MAX2 interactions indicates that the molecular structure of 2NOD is a better match for the ligand perception site pocket of D14. Moreover, 2NOD showed lower activity than rac-GR24 in promoting Orobanche cumana seed germination, suggesting its higher ability to control plant architecture than parasitic interactions. In combination with the improved stability of 2NOD, these results demonstrate that 2NOD is a strigolactone analog that can specifically mimic the activity of strigolactones and that 2NOD exhibits strong potential as a tool for studying the strigolactone signaling pathway in plants. 相似文献

In the humid forest zone of Southern Cameroon, farmers generally associate cocoa with native and exotic trees in complex agroforestry
systems. Despite the socio-economic and ecological importance of these systems, few studies have investigated their plant
composition. We investigated tree composition of cocoa agroforests along a gradient of market access, population density and
resource use intensity in the humid forest zone of southern Cameroon, comprising (i) the sub-region of Yaoundé, (ii) the sub-region
of Mbalmayo, and (iii) the sub-region of Ebolowa. Market access, population density and resource use intensity all decreased
from the first to the third sub-region. We quantified the diversity of tree species associated with cocoa within individual
agroforests, among agroforests in the same region, and among the three sub-regions, and classified the tree species according
to their main uses. A total of 9.1 ha belonging to 60 cocoa agroforests were inventoried in 12 villages. We encountered a
total of 206 tree species with an average of 21 tree species per agroforest. In the more urbanized area around Yaoundé, agroforests
were less diverse than in the other sub-regions. In all of the agroforests, food producing tree species tended to be more
frequent than other species. Two thirds of the food trees were native forest species and one third was introduced. From Ebolowa
to Yaoundé, the density of food producing trees doubled and the density of exotic food-producing species increased relative
to native species. Some local species producing high-value non-timber forest products were found in the agroforests, but their
density was far lower than that of exotic tree species. The agroforests also provide medicine, charcoal and other products
for household consumption and sale. We conclude that unless there are specific efforts to promote local forest tree species
in cocoa agroforests, these will progressively lose importance with increasing market access, population pressure and land

14-3-3 proteins regulate key processes in eukaryotic cells including nitrogen assimilation in plants by tuning the activity of nitrate reductase (NR), the first and rate-limiting enzyme in this pathway. The homodimeric NR harbors three cofactors, each of which is bound to separate domains, thus forming an electron transfer chain. 14-3-3 proteins inhibit NR by binding to a conserved phosphorylation site localized in the linker between the heme and molybdenum cofactor-containing domains. Here, we have investigated the molecular mechanism of 14-3-3-mediated NR inhibition using a fragment of the enzyme lacking the third domain, allowing us to analyze electron transfer from the heme cofactor via the molybdenum center to nitrate. The kinetic behavior of the inhibited Mo-heme fragment indicates that the principal point at which 14-3-3 acts is the electron transfer from the heme to the molybdenum cofactor. We demonstrate that this is not due to a perturbation of the reduction potentials of either the heme or the molybdenum center and conclude that 14-3-3 most likely inhibits nitrate reductase by inducing a conformational change that significantly increases the distance between the two redox-active sites. 相似文献

Activity of ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP) carboxylase in leaf extracts of the constitutive Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) plant Kalanchoe pinnata (Lam.) Pers. decreased with increasing leaf age, whereas the activity of phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) carboxylase increased. Summary The cytoskeleton in the siphonous, marine green algaAcetabularia is visualized by immunocytochemistry using antibodies against plant alfa tubulin and animal smooth muscle actin. In the vegetative phase of the life cycle, when the cell grows a cylindrical stalk and until the reproductive cap is completed, actin forms continuous, parallel bundles that extend through the entire length of the stalk and cap rays respectively. Microtubules (MTs) cannot be detected until the primary nucleus, located in the rhizoid of the giant cell, divides to form thousands of secondary nuclei. MTs can then be seen radiating from each secondary nucleus that is encountered in the stalk on its migration upwards into the cap rays. They are oriented mostly parallel to the long axis of the cell. At arrival in the cap rays up to the white spot stage, when nuclei assume equidistant positions in the cap ray cytoplasm, a radiating system of MTs forms around each nucleus and dramatically increases until impressive radial arrays have developed. This phase coincides with a disappearance of actin bundles in the cap rays, but they are retained in the stalk cytoplasm. Shortly after that additional MTs appear around the disk like partitions of cap ray cytoplasm. Concomitantly, bundles of actin reappear colinearly with the circumferrential MTs eventually forming complete rings around each disk of cap ray cytoplasm. During this process the compartments of the future cysts are gradually bulging outwards and simultaneously the rings of actin sink inwards until domes are formed with the nuclei fixed in the top centers of the domes. At this stage the peripheral areas of the radiating MT systems around the nuclei start to break down, whereas the circumferrential MT systems remain intact. Subsequently, the rings of both actin and MTs decrease in diameter, and finally contract to a spot opposite the nucleus, while the cysts continue to develop their oval shape. After the cysts have become separated, they round up and enter several rounds of nuclear divisions. MTs form short radial arrays around each nucleus with minor changes due to a reduction of MTs during division followed by a reappearance after completion of each division. Actin is rearranged in the cysts to a cortical network of randomly oriented, short bundles, that is maintained until gamete formation sets in.These findings accentuate the involvement of Cytoskeletal elements in the key steps of morphogenesis inAcetabularia to an extent that is unknown in higher plants. 相似文献
