Failure to induce over-compensation of growth in maturing yellow perch   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Unlike juvenile F1 male bluegill Lepomis macrochrus × female green sunfish L. cyanellus , maximized episodes of compensatory growth (CG) in 2 year yellow perch Perca flavescens did not surpass control masses because internal regulation caused abrupt appetite reduction upon catch-up. Together, the hybrid sunfish study and present work indicate that CG-maximizing feeding schedules and absence of an internal growth limiting mechanism are both required to produce substantial growth overcompensation (GOC). The less vigorous and less resilient CG responses of the yellow perch relative to those of the similarly fed hybrid sunfish appear indicative of the lack of GOC capacity in the former. This contrast, and results of previous studies are interpreted to suggest that GOC capacity may be limited to early life stages of fishes which have a substantial reproductive potential but are at high risk of mortality due to their small size. The possibility that GOC capacity is time-of-year-dependent and species-specific is considered also. Food deprivation periods that produced the strongest CG responses differed for male (2 days) and female (12 days) yellow perch. Among controls fed without restriction, growth rate and growth efficiency of female yellow perch exceeded those of males two-fold, however, males showed a greater capacity to catch-up to same-sex controls when undergoing CG. A feeding schedule using maintenance feeding v. food deprivation to elicit CG yielded the most rapid catch-up to control masses in the yellow perch. Such feeding schedules may produce even greater GOC than was achieved previously in hybrid sunfish, where feeding schedules involving food deprivation were employed.  相似文献

1. Non‐native mussels have increased water clarity in many lakes and streams in North America and Europe. Diel variation in catchability of some fish species has been linked to visibility during survey trawls (used to measure escapement). 2. Water clarity increased in nearshore areas of western Lake Erie by the early 1990s, following passage of legislation in 1972 to improve water quality (e.g. reduce phosphorus loading) and the invasion of dreissenid mussels (Dreissena spp.) beginning in 1987. 3. We hypothesised that increased water clarity in Lake Erie resulted in decreased catchability of young‐of‐year (age‐0) yellow perch (Perca flavescens Mitchill) during daylight compared to during night. We used a two‐tiered modelling approach to test this hypothesis on the ratio (R) of catch per hour (CPH) during night to CPH during daylight in bottom trawl surveys conducted during 1961–2005. 4. First, we examined seven a priori models. The first model, the ‘null’ model, represented no change in R over time. Three more models tested whether the timing of the change in R was associated with passage of water quality legislation only, dreissenids only (two‐period models) and both legislation and dreissenids (three‐period models). Three additional models included a 3‐year lag before the effects of legislation, dreissenids or both occurred. Secondly, all possible two‐ and three‐period models with a minimum of 2 years per time period were explored a posteriori. The a posteriori procedure determined the temporal transitions to higher R that were best supported by the data, without regard to a priori hypotheses. 5. Night CPH was greater than daylight CPH in 3 of 11 years during 1961–72, in 10 of 15 years during 1973–87, and in 14 of 18 years during 1988–2005. During 1991–2005 night CPH exceeded daylight CPH in all years except one, and night CPH was more than twice daylight CPH in 10 years during this period. 6. The best a priori model had two periods, with a break between 1990 and 1991, corresponding to 3 years after the dreissenid invasion. Similarly, the best two‐ and three‐period a posteriori models both had breaks between 1990 and 1991. The results supported our hypothesis that age‐0 yellow perch exhibited a transition to lower catchability during daylight compared to night, and the timing of the transition coincided with the establishment of dreissenid mussels. 7. The most plausible mechanism for our results was increased visibility of the trawl during daylight, resulting in increased avoidance of the trawl. These results have potential applications wherever non‐native mussels have increased water clarity.  相似文献

为了解家兔(Oryctolagus curiculus)黄艾美耳球虫(Eimeria flavescens)的内生发育史,用不同接种剂量感染20只无球虫兔,采用常规石蜡切片技术进行研究。共观察到4代裂殖生殖和1代配子生殖。每一代裂殖生殖阶段都含有2种类型的裂殖体:粗型和细型。第1代裂殖生殖发生于感染后60~72h,主要位于空肠的腺上皮;第2代裂殖生殖发生于感染后84h,位于盲肠和结肠的腺上皮;第3代裂殖生殖发生于感染后96~120h,位于盲肠和结肠的绒毛上皮;第4代裂殖生殖发生于感染后144~153h,位于结肠和盲肠的腺上皮。感染后167h,开始配子生殖阶段,成熟卵囊出现于感染后215h。本研究中对于裂殖生殖代数划分与文献报道不同,并观察到2种形态的裂殖体。  相似文献

In the South American sea lion (Otaria flavescens), a polygynous species with a high degree of sexual dimorphism, pups form groups during maternal foraging trips. The aim of this study was to investigate the existence of sexual differences in aggregation behavior and association patterns in O. flavescens pups at Isla de Lobos, Uruguay, during the first 2 mo of life. Scan samplings of marked pups were conducted every hour from 0700 to 1800 to register behavior. Association patterns were analyzed in SOCPROG (using the Half-Weight Index of Association). We did not find significant sex differences in any variable (time spent in groups, average group size, time interacting with other pups, and time in groups at sea). Each pup showed preference for at least one partner. Associations between individuals of the same and different sex were not significantly different. As expected, during the first month, pups associated more strongly with pups born in the same zone than with those born in a different zone. This research provides new evidence on the development of social behavior in otariids and serves as a basis for future studies focusing on sexual differences in pup behavior and association patterns among individuals (e.g., related with kinship).  相似文献

This review summarizes some of the main findings of our work with the Metals in the Environment Research Network examining seasonal and regional effects on metal accumulation, growth, condition, and physiology in wild yellow perch (Perca flavescens) from 10 lakes comprising two metal contamination gradients in the industrial regions of Sudbury, Ontario and Rouyn-Noranda, Québec, Canada. The specific objectives of this review are: (1) to propose threshold tissue metal concentrations to discriminate between fish from contaminated and reference sites; (2) to identify factors that can influence metal accumulation and fish condition; and (3) to define an experimental approach for measuring metal effects in wild yellow perch. Using tissue thresholds appeared useful not only for discriminating fish from clean or contaminated environments, but also provided a simple approach to examine metabolic consequences of tissue metal accumulation. Overall, fish from Sudbury grew faster, expressed higher aerobic capacities, and died younger, but also appeared better at limiting accumulation of some metals than Rouyn-Noranda fish. The condition of the latter fish was clearly more affected by metals than Sudbury fish. Finally, our dataset allows us to propose that yellow perch are highly suitable for ecological risk assessment studies of metal effects in wild fish, but that fish size, season, and region must be considered in sampling design and that several reference sites must be studied for meaningful conclusions to be reached.  相似文献

A total of 45 microsatellite loci from yellow perch, Perca flavescens, were isolated and characterized. Among the 45 microsatellite loci, 32 had more than two alleles. A wild population of P. flavescens (n = 48) was used to examine the allele range of the microsatellite loci. Mendelian inheritance of alleles was confirmed by examining the amplified products in pair‐mated families. The number of alleles for the 32 polymorphic loci varied from two to 16, and observed heterozygosity ranged between 0.024 (YP79) and 0.979 (YP60). Cross‐species polymorphic amplification in four other Percidae species was successful for 22 loci.  相似文献

The fire resilience of ground‐dwelling ant assemblages in grassland subjected to annual fire management was investigated. Study sites consisted of three burnt sites and three unburnt sites in grasslands on the Hiraodai Karst Plateau in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. Ground‐dwelling ants were sampled by Winkler extraction and collected at 10 days and 1, 2, 3 and 6 months post‐fire. In total 33 ant species belonging to 25 genera in six subfamilies were collected from the burnt and unburnt sites. Eight of the 29 ant species collected at burnt sites were restricted to burnt sites, while four of the 25 ant species collected at unburnt sites were restricted to unburnt sites. Non‐metric multidimensional scaling and analysis of similarities revealed that the ant assemblages in the burnt sites at 10 days and 1 month post‐fire were clearly separated from the assemblages observed at 2, 3 and 6 months post‐fire. The results suggested that the ground‐dwelling ant fauna in the study area were highly resilient to fire at 2 months post‐fire and that the annual fire regime did not have a marked effect on species richness.  相似文献

Naturally formed shoals of adult Gobiusculus flavescens in a Swedish fjord ranged in size from a few individuals to several hundred fish and were sorted by body size. Shoal composition was highly dynamic and any particular group was unlikely to remain together for more than a few hours. Shoaling tendency of juveniles in laboratory experiments was high, and consistent preferences were demonstrated for numerically larger shoals. Large test fish preferred to associate with shoals composed of large, over shoals composed of small fish, whereas small test fish associated with both size classes equally. The ecological importance of shoaling in small shallow water fish is discussed, and possible mechanisms for the observed patterns are proposed.  相似文献
