Length–biomass equations are relatively easy and cost-effective for deriving insect biomass. However, the exact relationship can vary between taxa and geographical regions. Semi-aquatic bugs are abundant and are indicators of freshwater quality, but there are no studies investigating the effect of habitat disturbance on their biomass, although it is useful in assessing ecological processes. We identified the best-fit length–biomass models to predict the biomass of semi-aquatic bugs (Hemiptera, Gerromorpha) collected from streams in Sabah, Malaysia. We used 259 juvenile and adult semi-aquatic bugs to compare a range of plausible length–biomass functions, and to assess whether relationships differed across the following families and body forms: (1) Cylindrostethinae, Gerrinae, and Ptilomerinae, which are subfamilies within Gerridae consisting of small-to-large bugs that have long and slender bodies, (2) Halobatinae, a subfamily within Gerridae, consisting of small-to-medium bugs with wide heads and thoraxes as well as short abdomens, and (3) Veliidae, which are small bugs with stout bodies. Estimation used five fitting functions – linear regression, polynomial regression order 2, 3, and 4, and power regression – on the following groupings: three body forms combined; each body form with life stages (juvenile and adult) combined; and each body form with life stages separated. Power regressions were the best fit in predicting the biomass of semi-aquatic bugs across life stages and body forms, and the predictive power of models was higher when the biomass of different body forms was calculated separately (specifically for Halobatinae and Veliidae). Splitting by life stages did not always result in additional improvement. The equations from this study expand the scope of possible future ecological research on semi-aquatic bugs, particularly in Southeast Asia, by allowing more studies to consider biomass-related questions.  相似文献

The triplet consisting of two monophyletic taxa and one paraphyletic taxon as constructive element of the phylogenetic system Evolution has produced very many novelties (apomorphies). Most of them are small and relatively inconstant, these are more or less indicative of the phylogenetic relationships between closely related species. They cannot be the constitutive character of a supraspecific taxon that exists since a long time and comprises many diversified species. Such a taxon of higher rank can only be characterized by an improbable, rare novelty that has developed only once and has been preserved in all descendent species. Two consecutive apomorphies of this persistent type (‘fixed apomorphies’) characterize three supraspecific taxa, the triplet “A”, “B” and “A minus B” (Fig. 1). The group “A minus B” is rejected in Hennig's theory because it is ‘paraphyletic’, but it is not an artefact created by the systematicist. It is an inevitable mathematical consequence of the differentiatison of the group “B” within the group “A”. Being the result of a subtraction, it is necessarily associated with the two monophyletic partners in the triplet, as it is delimited on one side by the synapomorphy of the group “A”, of which it is a part, and on the other side by the autapomorphy of the separate group “B”. Traditional classifications often include paraphyletic groupings that are inconsistent with phylogenetics, e. g. the Reptilia and the Apterygota. The fault in such cases is that these groups are extended beyond the limits of a triplet and cover more than a single interval between consecutive monophyletic taxa. Paraphyletic groups are admitted in the phylogenetic system only for bridging the gaps in our cladistic information. According to HENNIG'S theory, all supraspecific taxa should be arranged two by two as sister-groups originating from one ancestral species and comprising all descendents of that species. The fixed evolutionary novelties which characterize higher supraspecific taxa are, however, rare and scattered. It is highly improbable that they have developed in sister species, therefore the taxa marked by them cannot be sister-groups (except in very rare cases). In HENNIG'S earlier papers, e. g. in his system of Lepidoptera (1953: 46–49), the alleged ‘sister-groups' are, in reality, the groups “B” and “A minus B” of a triplet (see Fig. 2). In his revised concept (1957 and later), two autapomorphic groups which are most closely related in the recent fauna (“B” and “C” in Fig. 3) are called ‘sister-groups’. But these have originated independently from different ancestors in a plesiomorphic complex of extinct species and are more closely related to parts of this complex than to each other. True sister-groups (“Bx” and “Cx” in Fig. 4) would be formed if these related plesiomorphic species were included, but this extension of the ’backward‘ border of the taxon is not justified by synapomorphy (in the terms of logic, it is a ’metabasis‘), and it would make the classification of fossil species impossible, unless these show at least one synapomorphy with either “B” or “C”. In the system of the recent fauna the sister-groups are identical with the autapomorphic groups, because the plesiomorphic species are extinct. The natural system based on synapomorphies and autapomorphies is the triplet-system as outlined in Figure 6. It is not a new type of classification, but its theoretical foundation was missing, and precise instructions were needed for its use in phylogenetics. The information obtained by HENNIG'S method is entirely preserved in this system and can be retrieved from it, and both recent and extinct species can be classified together. The disadvantage of the triplet-system is that it contains twice as many taxa as HENNIG'S classification. This complexity will limit its use in the practice of taxonomy, but it may be simplified by transforming the system into a sequence of paraphyletic taxa terminating in a single monophylum.  相似文献

The morphology and morphogenesis of a new saline soil hypotrichous ciliate, Urosoma quadrinucleatum n. sp., collected from northwestern China, were studied based on live observations and protargol stained specimens. The new species is characterized as follows: size in vivo 90–130 × 20–30 μm; body outline elongate-elliptical with both ends broadly rounded; four macronuclear nodules; cortical granules present; paroral in front of endoral; usually 16 frontal-ventral-transverse cirri. Urosoma quadrinucleatum n. sp. has almost the same morphogenetic characteristics as its congeners U. gigantea and U. salmastra, and differs from other three congeners whose morphogenesis is known in the formation of the frontal-ventral-transverse cirral anlagen as well as the development of marginal and dorsal kineties anlagen. The sequence differences among U. quadrinucleatum n. sp. and other Urosoma species further support the validity of the present organism as novel species. Further, U. quadrinucleatum n. sp. clusters with U. salmastra in the phylogenetic analyses based on small subunit ribosomal RNA gene (SSU rDNA) sequence data.  相似文献

Chloroplast DNAs (cpDNAs) were analyzed in order to clarify the phylogenetic relationships among turfgrasses. Physical maps of cpDNAs from Agrostis stolonifera and Zoysia japonica, which are representative species of cool (C3 type) and warm (C4 type) season turfgrasses, respectively, were constructed with four restriction enzymes, i.e., PstI, SalI, SacI, and XhoI. The genome structures of these cpDNAs were found to be similar to each other in terms of genome size and gene orders, showing thereby a similarity to other grass cpDNAs. CpDNAs of 5 species of cool season turfgrasses and 6 species of warm season turfgrasses as well as four species of cereals, distributed among 14 genera of Gramineae, were digested with PstI, XhoI, and BamHI, and their restriction fragment patterns were compared. Their genome sizes were estimated to be 135–140 kbp. Each species showed characteristic RFLP patterns. On the basis of the frequency of commonly shared fragments, a dendrogram showing the phylogenetic relationships among their cpDNAs was constructed. This dendrogram shows that turfgrasses can be divided into three major groups; these correspond to the subfamilies. Cool and warm season turfgrasses are clearly distinguishable from each other, and the latter can be further classified into two subgroups that correspond to Eragrostoideae and Panicoideae. Our classification of turfgrasses and cereals by RFLP analysis of cpDNA agreed in principal with their conventional taxonomy, except for the location of Festuca and Lolium.Contribution no. 101 from the Kihara Institute for Biological Research, Yokohama City University, Yokohama 232, Japan  相似文献

Summary Formulas are presented to illustrate the calculation of correct variances of prediction error (PEV) and the correlation between true and predicted values (rTI) when the incorrect variance-covariance matrix for the random effects is used in mixed-model equations (MME). The example with progeny records of highly related and inbred sires showed that PEV were underestimated from the diagonals of the inverse of the coefficient matrix of the MME when sires were assumed unrelated and not inbred and were overestimated when relationships among sires were calculated with Henderson's simple rules for the inverse of the numerator relationship matrix, A-1, which do not consider inbreeding. When Quaas' rules for A-1, which do consider inbreeding, are used, the correct PEV are obtained. In the example, calculations of rTI from the diagonals of the inverse of the coefficient matrix were too large when relationships and inbreeding were ignored and were obviously wrong when the approximation to the numerator relationship matrix, A, was based on the simple rules for calculating A-1. If the correct A is used in the MME, the calculation of rTI may be incorrect if inbreeding of the evaluated individual is not considered. If inbreeding is known, adjustment for inbreeding is easy for calculation of rTI.Published as paper no. 9947, Journal Ser, Nebraska Agric Res Div, University of Nebraska, Lincoln, Neb.  相似文献

Infant lesser bushbabies are typically able, from the earliest age, to utter distress vocalizations which appear to have major adaptive significance. Distress vocalizations of infant G. moholi were analyzed by means of a digital storage oscilloscope. Three kinds of sound analyses were carried out: analysis of the sound wave signal, sequential spectrum analysis, and fast Fourier transformation. We emphasize analysis of the frequency spectrum. Three distress calls were identified-the click call, the crackle, and the chirp-which we report for the first time. Click calls were typically composed of short, high-pitched pulses (clicks) uttered in fast, repetitive sequences with a broad band frequency spectrum containing frequencies up to 60 kHz. These acoustic characteristics appear to be particularly well suited for accurate spatial localization of the sound source. The main function of the click call is apparently to alert and to guide the mother to a lost or endangered infant. These basic acoustic characteristics-related to sound localization-are shared to some extent, with the other two distress calls. However, the three calls appear to represent different degrees of distress, with the click call being the basic, call, the crackle corresponding to a greater degree of distress, and the chirp possibly signaling extreme distress such as physical pain.We prefer the specific name,Galago moholi (A. Smith, 1836), for the southern African lesser bushbaby [instead ofGalago senegalensis moholi (A. Smith, 1839)] according to the new classification proposed by Olson (1979, 1986) and Nashet al. (1989).  相似文献

The parallel /-barrel domain consisting of eight parallel -sheets surrounded by eight -helices has been currently identified in crystal structures of more than 20 enzymes. This type of protein folding motif makes it possible to catalyze various biochemical reactions on a variety of substrates (i.e., it seems to be robust enough so that different enzymatic functionalities could be designed on it). In spite of many efforts aimed at elucidation of evolutionary history of the present-day /-barrels, a challenging question remains unanswered: How has the parallel /-barrel fold arisen? Although the complete sequence comparison of all /-barrel amino acid sequences is not yet available, several sequence similarities have been revealed by using the highly conserved regions of -amylase as structural templates. Since many starch-processing enzymes adopt the parallel /-barrel structure these enzymes might be useful in the search for evolutionary relationships of the whole parallel eight-folded /-barrel enzyme family.  相似文献

Simple diagnostic statistical tests of models for DNA substitution   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
The accuracy of models for DNA substitution used in phylogenetic analyses is becoming more important with the increasing availability and analysis of molecular sequence data. It is natural to look for ways of improving these models, and to do this in a planned manner it is useful to be able to identify features of sequences that may not be described adequately. In this paper, I describe three statistics which may give useful diagnostic information on departures from models' predictions. The statistical distributions of these statistics are discussed and simple significance tests are derived. These tests are based on the (estimated) phylogeny of the sequences and so have the advantage of using the information contained in this tree. Examples are given of the application of the new tests to Markov chain models describing the evolution of primate pseudogene sequences and small-subunit RNA sequences.Abbreviations b(N,p) binomial distribution of N trials, each with probability p of success - m(N,p 1,p 2, ..., p r ) multinomial distribution of N trials, with r possible outcomes having probabilities p 1, p 2, ..., pr, respectively - N(, 2) Normal distribution with mean and variance 2 - p() Poisson distribution with mean - bp base pairs - cdf cumulative distribution function - i.i.d. independent, identical distribution  相似文献

Correspondence analyses were used to explore the relationships between yield and populations of Pratylenchus zeae in an upland rice field and in a greenhouse experiment. Initial soil (Pi) and final root (Pf) population densities of P. zeae, and yield (Y) of rice cv. UPL Ri5 were determined at 490 spots in the field. Very low Y was linked to very high Pf. Low Y was linked to medium or high Pi and medium Pf. Medium to very high Y were clustered with undetectable Pi and very low or high Pf. All yield levels were independent of very high Pi. In the greenhouse experiment where seven nematode inoculum levels and three fertilizer levels were evaluated, low Y was associated with medium or high Pf and high Y with high or low Pf. The analyses indicated that nematode-yield interaction involved a complex, dynamic process, in which the root-carrying capacity probably was a determining factor. Correspondence analysis, which does not require assumptions on the shape of nematode population-yield relationships or on variable distributions, revealed meaningful associations in these complex data sets.  相似文献
