Sixty-four wild heterokaryotic isolates of Phlebiopsis gigantea were analysed for asexual spore production, growth rate and competitive ability against Heterobasidion in vitro , as well as growth rate in Norway spruce wood. These P. gigantea traits were considered important for controlling infection of Norway spruce stumps by spores of Heterobasidion spp. Ten most promising P. gigantea isolates were crossed with each other and 172 F1 progeny heterokaryons were analysed for the above-mentioned traits. Thirteen most promising progeny heterokaryons were selected and their biocontrol ability against infection by Heterobasidion was compared with the parental isolates in stem pieces of Norway spruce. The results indicated that the progeny strains had generally better traits and control efficacy than the parental strains. The genetic effects accounted for a part of the variations between progeny and parental strains. This further suggests that there is a potential to improve the biocontrol properties of P. gigantea through breeding.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Numerous factors, including nest predation and brood parasitism, may limit populations of neotropical migratory birds. However, nest predation and brood parasitism are not constant, and temporal, biological, habitat, and landscape factors can affect the likelihood of these events. Understanding these patterns is important for species of conservation concern for which managers seek to provide quality habitat. One such species, the Swainson's warbler (Limnothlypis swainsonii), is a neotropical migrant that breeds primarily in bottomland hardwood forests of the southeastern United States. Little is known of factors influencing reproductive success of this rare, yet locally abundant, species. From 2004 through 2007, we examined factors influencing reproductive success of Swainson's warblers at 2 sites in eastern Arkansas, USA, St. Francis National Forest and White River National Wildlife Refuge. We used 2-stage modeling to assess the relationship between 1) temporal and biological, and 2) habitat and landscape factors and brood parasitism, nest survival, and fledgling production. Brood parasitism was greater in this population (36%) than reported elsewhere (≤ 10%), but decreased throughout the breeding season. Nest survival was comparable to or lower than in other populations of this species and increased throughout the breeding season. The probability of brood parasitism was greater near forest edges. Although nests of Swainson's warblers were often associated with giant cane (Arundinaria gigantea), nest survival had a weak negative association with cane density. For nests that were successful, the best predictor of number of Swainson's warblers fledged was brood-parasitism status: nonparasitized nests fledged 2.75 young, whereas parasitized nests fledged 0.60 Swainson's warblers. Our findings suggest that managing and restoring relatively high-elevation bottomland forests that are located far from agricultural edges should increase Swainson's warbler productivity.  相似文献

Premise of the study: Two New World species of Bambusoideae, Arundinaria gigantea and Crytpochloa strictiflora, were investigated in a phylogenomic context. Complete plastome sequences have been previously determined and analyzed for nine bambusoid species that exclusively represent Old World lineages. The addition of New World species provides more complete information on relationships within Bambusoideae. • Methods: Plastomes from A. gigantea and C. strictiflora were sequenced using Sanger methods. Phylogenomic and divergence estimate analyses were conducted on both species with 23 other Poaceae. • Key Results: Phylogenomic and divergence analyses suggested that A. gigantea diverged from within Arundinarieae between 1.94–3.92 mya and that C. strictiflora diverged as the sister to tropical woody species between 24.83 and 40.22 mya. These results are correlated with modern relative diversities in the two lineages. • Conclusions: The two New World bamboos show unique plastome features accumulated and maintained in biogeographic isolation from Old World taxa. The overall evidence for A. gigantea is consistent with recent dispersal, and that for C. strictiflora is consistent with vicariance.  相似文献

Urbanization is an important component of global change. Urbanization affects species interactions, but the evolutionary implications are rarely studied. We investigate the evolutionary consequences of a common pattern: the loss of high trophic‐level species in urban areas. Using a gall‐forming fly, Eurosta solidaginis, and its natural enemies that select for opposite gall sizes, we test for patterns of enemy loss, selection, and local adaptation along five urbanization gradients. Eurosta declined in urban areas, as did predation by birds, which preferentially consume gallmakers that induce large galls. These declines were linked to changes in habitat availability, namely reduced forest cover in urban areas. Conversely, a parasitoid that attacks gallmakers that induce small galls was unaffected by urbanization. Changes in patterns of attack by birds and parasitoids resulted in stronger directional selection, but loss of stabilizing selection in urban areas, a pattern which we suggest may be general. Despite divergent selective regimes, gall size did not very systematically with urbanization, suggesting but not conclusively demonstrating that environmental differences, gene flow, or drift, may have prevented the adaptive divergence of phenotypes. We argue that the evolutionary effects of urbanization will have predictable consequences for patterns of species interactions and natural selection.  相似文献

Aims: In 2005, a Francisella sp. was isolated from diseased cultured giant abalone (Haliotis gigantea) in Japan. The aim of this study was to clarify the taxonomic status of this Francisella sp. Shimane‐1 isolate in relation to the four described Francisella species. Methods and Results: The 16S rRNA gene and several housekeeping genes of the Shimane‐1 were compared to isolates of the four recognized species within the Francisella genus. DNA–DNA hybridization (DDH) and biochemical profile comparison were performed with the two phylogenetically closely related species, Francisella philomiragia and Francisella noatunensis. Results show that the Shimane‐1 is genetically different from all described Francisella species and differs phenotypically from F. philomiragia and F. noatunensis. The average DDH similarity of Francisella sp. Shimane‐1 to F. noatunensis ssp. noatunensis (NCIMB14265T) and to F. philomiragia (DSM7535T) was 49·2 and 61%, respectably, clearly supporting the establishment of Shimane‐1 as a new species within the Francisella genus. Conclusions: The phenotypic and genetic results presented in this study suggest the establishment of Shimane‐1 as a novel species, for which the name Francisella halioticida sp. nov. (=LMG26062T, =DSM23729T) is proposed. Significance and Impact of the Study: This study clarifies the taxonomic position and characteristics of a novel mollusc pathogenic Francisella species.  相似文献

The activity of cellulase, peroxidase, phosphatase and dehydrogenase enzymes, together with the content of protocatechuic and vanillic acids, in samples of Norway spruce wood inoculated with 17 different isolates of Phlebiopsis gigantea was measured. The same isolates were used to compare decay activity in samples of Norway spruce wood after incubation for 3 and 6 months. Significant differences in enzyme activity and phenol production were found between aerial mycelium overgrowing the wood sample and the underlying wood. These differences indicated that the nature of the fungal mycelium appears to change depending on whether it is in contact with wood. After 6 months, highly extensive decomposition of the wood was shown by two British isolates. The results confirm a large difference in P. gigantea inoculum among isolates in natural conditions and reinforce the need for constant evaluation of the most active isolates to use in preparations for biocontrol: a problem for both users and registration bodies.  相似文献

The large pine weevil ( Hylobius abietis L.) is one of the most important pests in coniferous reforestation in Europe. Larvae develop in the stumps of recently felled trees; the emerging adults feed on the bark of seedlings and may kill them. The ability of the entomopathogenic nematodes Heterorhabditis megidis and Steinernema carpocapsae to invade pine weevil larvae in Sitka spruce ( Picea sitchensis ) buried in moist sand was evaluated. Overall, four times as many H. megidis as S. carpocapsae invaded pine weevil larvae. The two species of nematode differed in their response to timber condition. The number of S. carpocapsae invading pine weevil larvae was twice as high in billets inoculated with the wood-rotting fungus Phlebiopsis gigantea as in fresh timber, while the number of H. megidis invading was reduced by 25%. Invasion into non-feeding insects (larvae of the wax moth Galleria mellonella ) contained in timber disks was also affected by timber quality, indicating that nematode behaviour was affected directly by the physical or chemical condition of the timber, though trophically mediated effects may also have been involved.  相似文献

The mycorrhizal basidiomycetes are known to have multiple, independent evolutionary origins from saprotrophic ancestors. To date, a number of studies have revealed functional resemblance of mycorrhizal fungi to free-living saprotrophs, but information on the ability of saprotrophic fungi to perform as mycorrhizal symbionts is scarce. Here, the objective was to investigate the ability of three wood-decay fungi, Phlebiopsis gigantea, Phlebia centrifuga and Hypholoma fasciculare, to colonize fine roots of conifer seedlings. For each fungus, mycorrhizal syntheses were attempted with Picea abies and Pinus sylvestris. After 24 wk, isolation of fungi and direct sequencing of fungal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) rDNA were carried out from healthy-looking surface-sterilized root tips that yielded both pure cultures and ITS sequences of each inoculated strain. Mycelial mantle of P. gigantea was frequently formed on root tips of P. abies, and microscopical examination has shown the presence of intercellular hyphae inside the roots. The results provide evidence of the ability of certain wood-decay fungi to colonise fine roots of tree seedlings.  相似文献
