Rocky macroalgal assemblages are typically composed of patches differing in age and species composition and grazing is generally a very important modifier of such assemblages. We hypothesized that patch colonization time determines its algal community and that grazing effects depend on the colonization time and vary with depth. We created patches by placing empty substrates at two sublittoral depths over five consecutive months, manipulated grazer entry and determined the algal species composition in each patch in the next growing season. Distinct algal colonization periods resulted in different algal assemblages. Although algal communities in our study area consist mainly of opportunistic species, thus being highly dynamic, the resulting macroalgal assemblages differed in species richness, diversity, composition, and total biomass even a year after first colonization. Substrates close to the water-surface supported a higher species richness and diversity than those in the deeper littoral. The community characteristics, total density, total biomass and species richness were only slightly, if at all affected by grazing. However, individual algal species or taxa showed varying and even contrasting responses to grazing, often differently between depths and depending on colonization time. In the deeper littoral, but not close to the water surface, grazing increased the density of filamentous brown algae while reducing the green alga Cladophora glomerata. In these taxa, grazing effects were strongest in patches colonized during the early growing season. Grazing at the colonization stage had lasting consequences for the density of several individual species.  相似文献

The relationship between biomass and species richness (SR) was studied along productivity gradients in coastal phytoplankton assemblages under the influence of terrestrial runoff. In particular, the investigation focused on (a) whether phytoplankton blooms affect the shape of the relationship, (b) whether the relationship is taxon specific (between dinoflagellates and diatoms), and (c) the potential mechanisms regulating the shape of the relationship. Analysis was based on phytoplankton and physicochemical data from six coastal areas in the Aegean Sea, Eastern Mediterranean, covering the whole range from oligotrophy to eutrophication. A SR-biomass relationship was not observed for the more oligotrophic areas, whereas hump-shaped curves were found in areas yielding higher maximum biomass values, corresponding to bloom events occurring mainly during winter. Furthermore, the observed hump-shaped relationships were taxon specific since they were more pronounced in the case of diatoms than dinoflagellates. It is hypothesized that SR at the leftmost part of the hump-shape is nutrient regulated, whereas at the rightmost part is limited by extreme abiotic stress occurring during the formation of blooms in coastal ecosystems. The results of this study suggest that a double stress mechanism related to abiotic factors may be responsible for the hump-shaped SR-biomass relationships occurring in coastal phytoplankton communities at various levels of productivity.  相似文献

Diet, shape and their covariation were analysed in juvenile flounder Platichthys flesus and plaice Pleuronectes platessa specimens from a tidal inshore habitat (Dublin Bay) in the Irish Sea. Stomach content analysis revealed differences in the diet, suggesting a substantial degree of resource partitioning between the species. Geometric morphometrics detected significant and discriminating differences in body shape, particularly in the head region. Most interestingly, a high degree of correlation was detected between diet and shape. The ontogenetic and ecological implications of the diet and shape covariation pattern were discussed, suggesting that morphological differences, in particular in the head region, may represent the functional platform which allows for the existence of ecologically significant differences in prey search and capture between P. platessa and P. flesus.  相似文献

An Atlantic herring major histocompatibility class II A ( Clha-DAA ) cDNA sequence has been characterized and was shown to encode a leader peptide, alpha-1 domain, alpha-2 domain, connecting peptide, transmembrane and cytoplasmic region. The Clha-DAA protein sequence has all the characteristics of a teleost class II A protein with conserved cysteines in both the alpha-1 and the alpha-2 domains and two potential N-linked glycosylation sites. Exon 2 sequences encoding the polymorphic alpha-1 domain from different individuals were analysed and revealed the presence of at least two loci. The Clha-DAA gene consists of four exons and three short introns. Four unique intron 3 sequences from multiple individuals were obtained and were shown to contain a (TG)n microsatellite sequence. Primers were optimized such that only a single microsatellite locus designated Clha-DAA-INTR3 was amplified. Four herring populations from the North Sea and the Baltic Sea were genotyped for Clha-DAA-INTR3 . In total, 16 Clha-DAA-INTR3 alleles were detected; the distribution of the alleles showed no deviation from Hardy–Weinberg expectation. Levels of genetic differentiation among samples were of similar magnitude as have been reported earlier for neutral microsatellite loci between northern North Sea and Baltic Sea herring populations.  相似文献

The primary production of bottom ice algae is an important food source for sympagic, pelagic and benthic organisms in the Arctic Ocean as well as Antarctic Ocean. Using 13C-15N isotope tracers, the recent ice algal production at Barrow during the spring season was lower in 2003 than three decades ago, although the maximum chlorophyll-a concentration for the bottom ice algae was similar to the values from previous studies. Estimated recent new and total production rates of the ice algae were 0.8 g C m- 2 yr- 1 and 2.0 g C m- 2 yr- 1 respectively, while the rates of water column phytoplankton were 0.2 g C m- 2 yr- 1 and 0.7 g C m- 2 yr- 1 for the spring sampling period in 2003. The ice algae contributed 74% of the pelagic primary production under the landfast sea ice at Barrow before the phytoplankton spring bloom. At the end of the season in 2003, a high carbon allocation of lipids in the ice algae was found. Three possible explanations- nutrient depletion, increasing light, and/or changes in species composition- were suggested for the high carbon incorporation into lipids. This high lipid synthesis of the bottom ice algae might be significant to zooplankton and benthic fauna grazers because lipids are the most energy dense biomolecules.  相似文献

Echinometra lucunter, (Pindá) is a sea urchin encountered in the Brazilian coast and exposed to high and low temperatures related to low and high tides. Despite their great distribution and importance, few studies have been done on the biological function of their coelomocytes. Thus, Echinometra lucunter perivisceral coelomocytes were characterized under optical and transmission electron microscopy. Phagocytic amoebocytes in the perivisceral coelom were labelled by injecting ferritin, and ferritin labelled phagocytic amoebocytes were found in the peristomial connective tissue after injecting India ink into the tissue, indicating the amoebocytes ability to respond to an inflammatory stimulus. Results showed that the phagocytic amoebocytes were the main inflammatory cells found in the innate immune response of E. lucunter. While other works have recorded these phenomena in sea urchins found in moderate and constant temperature, this study reports on these same phenomena in a tropical sea urchin under great variation of temperature, thus providing new data to inflammatory studies in invertebrate pathology.  相似文献

The Salton Sea is a highly eutrophic, hypersaline terminal lake that receives inflows primarily from agricultural drainages in the Imperial and Coachella valleys. Impending reductions in water inflow at Salton Sea may concentrate existing contaminants which have been a concern for many years, and result in higher exposure to birds. Thus, waterbird eggs were collected and analyzed in 2004 and compared with residue concentrations from earlier years; these data provide a base for future comparisons. Eggs from four waterbird species (black-crowned night-heron [Nycticorax nycticorax], great egret [Ardea alba], black-necked stilt [Himantopus mexicanus], and American avocet [Recurvirostra Americana]) were collected. Eggs were analyzed for organochlorine pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), metals, and trace elements, with current results compared to those reported for eggs collected from the same species and others during 1985–1993. The two contaminants of primary concern were p,p′-DDE (DDE) and selenium. DDE concentrations in night-heron and great egret eggs collected from the northwest corner of Salton Sea (Whitewater River delta) decreased 91 and 95%, respectively, by 2004, with a concomitant increase in eggshell thickness for both species. Decreases in bird egg DDE levels paralleled those in tissues of tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus × O. urolepis), an important prey species for herons and egrets. Despite most nests of night-herons and great egrets failing in 2004 due to predation, predicted reproductive effects based on DDE concentrations in eggs were low or negligible for these species. The 2004 DDE findings were in dramatic contrast to those in the past decade, and included an 81% decrease in black-necked stilt eggs, although concentrations were lower historically than those reported in night-herons and egrets. Selenium concentrations in black-necked stilt eggs from the southeast corner of Salton Sea (Davis Road) were similar in 1993 and 2004, with 4.5–7.6% of the clutches estimated to be selenium impaired during both time periods. Because of present selenium concentrations and future reduced water inflow, the stilt population is of special concern. Between 1992 and 1993 and 2004 selenium in night-heron and great egret eggs from the Whitewater River delta at the north end of the Sea decreased by 81 and 55%, respectively. None of the night-heron or egret eggs collected in 2004 contained selenium concentrations above the lowest reported effect concentration (6.0 μg/g dw). Reasons for selenium decreases in night-heron and egret eggs are unknown. Other contaminants evaluated in 2004 were all below known effect concentrations. However, in spite of generally low contaminant levels in 2004, the nesting populations of night-herons and great egrets at Salton Sea were greatly reduced from earlier years and snowy egrets (Egretta thula) were not found nesting. Other factors that include predation, reduced water level, diminished roost and nest sites, increased salinity, eutrophication, and reduced fish populations can certainly influence avian populations. Future monitoring, to validate predicted responses by birds, other organisms, and contaminant loadings associated with reduced water inflows, together with adaptive management should be the operational framework at the Salton Sea. The change in life history of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) on the River Dee over the last 60 years is described. Over the last 60 years, salmon have shown a change in run timing, the majority currently entering the river between August and October compared with prior to June. This has coincided with a change in the sea age composition, which was dominated by multi-sea winter salmon prior to the 1980s after which the proportion of 1sea-winter fish increased until they now dominate the mature population. Growth rates of salmon in fresh water remained relatively stable until the mid-1980s and then increased. By the end of the 1990s juvenile salmon were, by the end of their first and second year, respectively, ∼60 and ∼19%, on average, larger than they were between the late 1930s and mid-1980s. This has been reflected in a change in the age composition of smolts where the mean smolt age has declined from ∼2 years prior to the 1980s to ∼1.6 years in the late 1990s. There was no observed trend in post-smolt (marine) growth for salmon. Size at return for 1SW salmon appeared stable while there is some evidence of an increase in mean length of 2SW salmon at the end of the 1990s. A steady state life history model was developed which suggests an increase in the instantaneous rate of mortality by 2.9% from 1.495 year−1 in 1937/1938 to 1.538 year−1 in 1967/1969 and by 21.6% to 1.870 year−1 in 1997/1999. This is considered to explain the shift in mean age at maturity from 5.2 to 4.8 to 3.9 years for the three periods examined. There is close agreement between the observed mean age at maturity and that predicted by the model suggesting optimal lifetime reproductive success. Guest editors: S. Dufour, E. Prévost, E. Although trophic cascades—the effect of apex predators on progressively lower trophic level species through top-down forcing—have been demonstrated in diverse ecosystems, the broader potential influences of trophic cascades on other species and ecosystem processes are not well studied. We used the overexploitation, recovery and subsequent collapse of sea otter (Enhydra lutris) populations in the Aleutian archipelago to explore if and how the abundance and diet of kelp forest fishes are influenced by a trophic cascade linking sea otters with sea urchins and fleshy macroalgae. We measured the abundance of sea urchins (biomass density), kelp (numerical density) and fish (Catch per unit effort) at four islands in the mid-1980s (when otters were abundant at two of the islands and rare at the two others) and in 2000 (after otters had become rare at all four islands). Our fish studies focused on rock greenling (Hexagrammos lagocephalus), the numerically dominant species in this region. In the mid-1980s, the two islands with high-density otter populations supported dense kelp forests, relatively few urchins, and abundant rock greenling whereas the opposite pattern (abundant urchins, sparse kelp forests, and relatively few rock greenling) occurred at islands where otters were rare. In the 2000, the abundances of urchins, kelp and greenling were grossly unchanged at islands where otters were initially rare but had shifted to the characteristic pattern of otter-free systems at islands where otters were initially abundant. Significant changes in greenling diet occurred between the mid-1980s and the 2000 although the reasons for these changes were difficult to assess because of strong island-specific effects. Whereas urchin-dominated communities supported more diverse fish assemblages than kelp-dominated communities, this was not a simple effect of the otter-induced trophic cascade because all islands supported more diverse fish assemblages in 2000 than in the mid-1980s.  相似文献
