Host plant use and availability were determined in early nymphal and adult-stage Schistocerca emarginata (=lineata) (Orthoptera: Acrididae) populations at six localities in Texas, USA. Early instar nymphal populations were feeding almost exclusively on either Ptelea trifoliata (Rutaceae) or Rubus trivialis (Rosaceae). This study represents the first demonstration of a geographic structure of host plant specificity in a polyphagous grasshopper. Recognizing this geographic structure required investigations of both developmental and geographical variation in host plant use. Nymphal diet breadths were significantly less than adult diet breadths at four of six localities and smaller overall when pooled nymphal and adult diet breadths were compared among sites. Neither restricted nymphal mobility nor host plant availability accounted for the observed differences in host plant use between developmental stages and among localities. Evidence suggests that the differences in host use among populations are due to host-plant-associated genetic differentiation. Received: 4 June 1998 / Accepted: 10 March 1999  相似文献

Life span (the age of death for individuals that survived the establishment phase) is a key trait in plant life history. Despite its importance for understanding plant–environment relationships, there are still numerous substantial knowledge gaps about variation in plant maximum life spans and the ecological processes underlying these patterns.Based on plant age data obtained by means of herbochronology, we analysed patterns of intraspecific plant maximum life span variation in three perennial species (Campanula scheuchzeri, Helianthemun nummularium and Lotus corniculatus) along environmental gradients of mean annual temperature, soil depth and soil nutrients. This variation was compared with predictions from the ‘death-by-starvation hypothesis’ proposed by Hans Molisch in 1938, an unjustly forgotten ‘extrinsic’ theory on plant life span variation. Our study suggests that plant age variation within populations responds sensitively to growing conditions. The most important finding is that mean annual temperature or environmental conditions related to it seems to be a driving factor for intraspecific variation in plant maximum life span in all species studied. Despite large within-population variation, individuals of C. scheuchzeri, L. corniculatus and H. nummularium generally had a longer life span under colder climates (uplands in our case). In addition, soil depth (as a proxy for habitat susceptibility to drought) was found to have a significant positive effect on the age values in the case of C. scheuchzeri. These findings, therefore, are in line with Molisch’s “death-by-starvation hypothesis”: extended maximum life span results from reduced production of sink tissues and slow vegetative growth. We conclude that the analysis of plant life span adjustments along gradients of environmental factors can considerably contribute to our understanding of how plants may cope with changing environmental conditions, e.g., due to global change.  相似文献

Genetic variation among 20 populations of Diachasmimorpha longicaudata (Ashmead) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) in Thailand was investigated using single strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) analysis of mitochondrial DNA sequences. From a total 641 individual parasitoids, seven distinct haplotypes containing a total of 32 polymorphic sites were observed from cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) sequences along with five distinct haplotypes containing a total 16 polymorphic sites from 16S rDNA sequences. Values obtained through pairwise FST comparisons and analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) indicated significant genetic differentiation among D. longicaudata populations in Thailand. Congruent relationships showing separation of these populations into three groups were obtained from Neighbor joining and Bayesian phylogenetic tree analyses along with the use of haplotype networks. This SSCP analysis of populations of the D. longicaudata species complex is the first report using molecular population genetic methods to analyze the structure of this parasitoid species in Thailand. This may provide useful information for release of parasitoid strains to maximize their benefit in biological control programs.  相似文献

The lesser grain borer (Rhyzopertha dominica (F.)) is an important pest of stored grain in many parts of the world (Paleartic, Ethiopian, Oriental, Australian, Neotropical, and Neartic regions) with the ability to fly long distances. These insects have been shown to be resistant to organophosphorus insecticides in several studies. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was used to assess the genetic variability within and among eight Brazilian and seven United States populations of R. dominica and to determine how insecticide resistance may be spreading within both countries. Significant variation in allele frequency among populations was observed at all six polymorphic enzyme loci that were examined. The Brazilian and U.S. populations were genetically differentiated from one another; populations within the U.S. and those within Brazil were also differentiated from one another. The mean genetic similarity among the seven U.S. populations collected in a small region in northeast Kansas was smaller than that among eight Brazilian populations collected in a relatively large geographical area. These results are consistent with the resistance ratios to chlorpyriphos-methyl in R. dominica populations from Brazil and the U.S. and the information available concerning patterns of flight activity in this insect.  相似文献

Floral-colour polymorphism in rewardless orchids has been hypothesized to be maintained by means of naïve insects, which after visiting a flower without reward will tend to fly elsewhere, looking for a flower of a different colour. In this study, levels of male and female reproductive success were monitored in Southern Italy populations of the deceptive orchid Dactylorhiza sambucina, through field observations over 3 years. These populations were characterized by the presence of a rare pink morph which is sympatric with the more frequent yellow and red morphs. In addition, final plant fertility was evaluated through percentages of embryo-containing seeds produced in both natural conditions and hand-pollination experiments. Results showed that pollinator preferences were independent of the morph frequencies and thus do not promote the predicted negative frequency-dependent selection. Although yellow and pink morphs showed significantly higher male reproductive success (RS), we found comparable levels of female RS, which suggest that pollinator behaviour cannot be the main mechanism which maintains this polymorphism. Interestingly, we found different percentages of embryo-containing seeds in fruits set under natural conditions as well as in those obtained from experimental crosses. In particular, pink morph showed a very low intrinsic fertility. Moreover, fertility in intra- was higher than in inter-morph crosses. To our knowledge, this is the first study pointing out the occurrence in the orchid family of post-pollination reproductive barriers. Findings are discussed in light of present hypothesis on the evolution and maintenance of colour polymorphism in deceptive orchids and other angiosperms.  相似文献

Gene flow is a fundamental evolutionary force in adaptation that is especially important to understand as humans are rapidly changing both the natural environment and natural levels of gene flow. Theory proposes a multifaceted role for gene flow in adaptation, but it focuses mainly on the disruptive effect that gene flow has on adaptation when selection is not strong enough to prevent the loss of locally adapted alleles. The role of gene flow in adaptation is now better understood due to the recent development of both genomic models of adaptive evolution and genomic techniques, which both point to the importance of genetic architecture in the origin and maintenance of adaptation with gene flow. In this review, we discuss three main topics on the genomics of adaptation with gene flow. First, we investigate selection on migration and gene flow. Second, we discuss the three potential sources of adaptive variation in relation to the role of gene flow in the origin of adaptation. Third, we explain how local adaptation is maintained despite gene flow: we provide a synthesis of recent genomic models of adaptation, discuss the genomic mechanisms and review empirical studies on the genomics of adaptation with gene flow. Despite predictions on the disruptive effect of gene flow in adaptation, an increasing number of studies show that gene flow can promote adaptation, that local adaptations can be maintained despite high gene flow, and that genetic architecture plays a fundamental role in the origin and maintenance of local adaptation with gene flow.  相似文献

, and 1988. Morphological variation of Echinococcus granulosus protoscoleces from hydatid cysts of human and various domestic animals in Jordan. International Journal for Parasitology 18: 1111–1114. Rostellar hook morphology of protoscoleces was employed to study the possible existence of Echinococcus granulosus strains in humans and various domestic animals in Jordan. A distinct form in the donkey was evident as the protoscoleces from this host did not share any characteristics with those from the other hosts examined. Sheep, goats and cattle appeared to be affected by another form since the protoscoleces from their hydatid cysts shared six out of nine characteristics studied. Protoscoleces of camel and human cysts shared seven out of nine characteristics studied and they were different in six characteristics from protoscoleces from other hosts. Differences observed among the three forms may reflect strain variation of E. granulosus in this country.  相似文献

Excirolana braziliensis is a dioecious marine isopod that lives in the high intertidal zone of sandy beaches on both sides of Central and South America. It possesses no larval stage and has only limited means of adult dispersal. Indirect estimates of gene flow have indicated that populations from each beach exchange less than one propagule per generation. Multivariate morphometrics have discovered three morphs of this species in Panama, two of them closely related and found on opposite sides of Central America (“C morph” in the Caribbean and “C′ morph” in the eastern Pacific), the third found predominantly in the eastern Pacific (“P morph”). Though the P and C′ morphs are seldom found on the same beach, they have overlapping latitudinal ranges in the eastern Pacific. A related species, Excirolana chamensis, has been described from the Pacific coast of Panama. Each beach contains populations that remain morphologically and genetically stable, but a single drastic change in both isozymes and morphology has been documented. We studied isozymes and multivariate morphology of 10 populations of E. braziliensis and of one population of E. chamensis. Our objective was to assess the degree of genetic and morphological variation, the correlation of divergence on these two levels of integration, the phylogenetic relationships between morphs, and the possible contributions of low vagility, low gene flow, and occasional extinction and recolonization to the genetic structuring of populations. Genetic distance between the P morph, on one hand, and the other two morphotypes of E. braziliensis, on the other, was as high as the distance between E. braziliensis and E. chamensis. Several lines of evidence agree that E. chamensis and the P morph had diverged from other morphs of E. braziliensis before the rise of the Panama Isthmus separated the C and C′ forms, and that the P morph constitutes a different species. A high degree of genetic differentiation also exists between populations of the same morph. On the isozyme level, every population can be differentiated from every other on the basis of at least one diagnostically different locus, regardless of geographical distance or morphological affiliation. Morphological and genetic distances between populations are highly correlated. However, despite the high degree of local variation, evolution of E. braziliensis as a whole has not been particularly rapid; divergence between the C and C′ morphs isolated for 3 million yr by the Isthmus of Panama is not high by the standard of within-morph differentiation or by comparison with other organisms similarly separated. Alleles that are common in one population may be absent from another of the same morph, yet they appear in a different morph in a separate ocean. The high degree of local differentiation, the exclusive occupation of a beach by one genotype with rare arrival of foreign individuals that cannot interbreed freely with the residents, the genetic stability of populations with infrequent complete replacement by another genetic population, and the sharing by morphs of polymorphisms that are not shared by local populations, all suggest a mode of evolution concentrated in rare episodes of extinction and recolonization, possibly coupled with exceptional events of gene flow that help preserve ancestral variability in both oceans.  相似文献
