sporophytes, and both male and female gametophytes of Dictyopteris undulata Holmes were collected from the Pacific coast and the Japan Sea coast of Japan. Female gametophytes are reported for the first time in the present study. All reproductive structures are aggregated in sori that form on both sides of the midrib in the upper and the middle parts of a blade. Tetraspor-angia are spherical and project from the cortical layer with a 2–4-celled stalk at the base. They are sometimes divided tetrahedrally to form four spores, but often remain undivided. Oogoniat sori also project from the cortical layer. Each oogonium is ovoid, sometimes borne on a single stalk cell at the base. Antheridial sori appear swollen above the cortex and each antheridium has a basal stalk cell. Fertile female gametophytes and te-trasporophytes are difficult to distinguish from each other in surface view because tetrasporangial and oogonial sori are similar in size and undivided tetrasporangia resemble oogonia. Oogonia are not so closely packed in small groups, unlike in Dictyota species, and they can be distinguished by the cell sizes (i.e. tetrasporangia are bigger in diameter than oogonia).  相似文献

The distribution of sterols in 14 Chilean Rhodophyceae and in Lessonia sp. (Phaeophyceae) has been examined. Cholesterol is present in all the red algae examined. Golidium filicinum contains, in addition desmosterol and 24-methylene-cholesterol. Cholest-7-en-3-β-ol was found in Cryptonemia angustate and Neoagardhiella gaudichaudii. Fucosterol and 24-methylenecholesterol were found in Lessonia sp.  相似文献

Cellulose contents were estimated in 12 seaweed samples belonging to different families e.g. red, brown and green, growing in Indian waters. Each cellulose sample was fractionated to yield alpha (α) and beta (β) celluloses. Characterization was done using various analytical tools and results were validated by comparison with those of the cellulose obtained from Whatman filter paper No. 4. The greatest yields of cellulose (crude), α- and β-cellulose were obtained from Gelidiella acerosa (13.65%), Chamaedoris auriculata (9.0%) and G. acerosa (3.10%). G. acerosa was also found to contain relatively high amount of α-cellulose (8.19%). The lowest cellulose contents were recorded from Kappaphycus alvarezii (2.00%) and Sarconema scinaioides (2.1%), while the latter contained the lowest α-, and β-celluloses (1.0% and 0.30%, respectively). It appears that agarophytic and alginophytic algae contain high cellulose and α-cellulose contents, while the carrageenophyte contains low cellulose. The brown algae, in general contain high cellulose as well as α- and β-celluloses.  相似文献

About 30 species of algae, chosen from a wide range of algal classes and orders, have been examined to see whether the chlorosulpholipids are widely distributed in this division of the plant kingdom. Most of the fresh-water species examined contained chlorosulpholipids, although only Ochromonas danica and O. malhamensis contained large quantities. The chlorosulpholipids of O. malhamensis were predominantly of the tetracosane series, the parent compound of which was tetracosane-1, 14-diol disulphate. No chlorosulpholipids were detected in any of the marine species examined.  相似文献

Much evidence suggests that life originated in hydrothermal habitats, and for much of the time since the origin of cyanobacteria (at least 2.5 Ga ago) and of eukaryotic algae (at least 2.1 Ga ago) the average sea surface and land surface temperatures were higher than they are today. However, there have been at least four significant glacial episodes prior to the Pleistocene glaciations. Two of these (approx. 2.1 and 0.7 Ga ago) may have involved a 'Snowball Earth' with a very great impact on the algae (sensu lato) of the time (cyanobacteria, Chlorophyta and Rhodophyta) and especially those that were adapted to warm habitats. Temporal and spatial variations in Sargassum ilicifolium thallus density and length were investigated on equatorial coral reefs in Singapore from November 2011 to October 2012. Thalli density varied little throughout the year, however, we found strong seasonal patterns in thallus length and identified temperature as the significant driver. Sargassum ilicifolium reached maximum length in December (110.39 ± 2.37 cm) during periods of cooler water temperatures, and minimum length in May (9.88 ± 0.48 cm) during periods of warmer water temperatures. Significant spatial variation was also observed for both thallus density and length of S. ilicifolium among reefs. Within reefs, densities of S. ilicifolium were higher on reef flats (20.40 ± 0.40 individuals · 0.25 m?2) compared to upper reef slopes (5.66 ± 0.23 individuals · 0.25 m?2). Our findings highlight that marked seasonality in the growth of canopy‐forming macroalgae can occur within equatorial reef systems where temperature ranges are restricted (<3°C).  相似文献

The effects of different conditioning treatments (fresh, freezing, freeze‐drying, oven‐drying and greenhouse‐drying) on the total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant activities of two brown algae, Sargassum muticum and Bifurcaria bifurcata, were investigated and compared. Phenolic compounds were extracted in a methanol/water (50:50) solution, and TPC was measured by the colorimetric Folin‐Ciocalteu assay. Antioxidant activity was assessed by the DPPH (2, 2‐diphenyl‐1‐picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging assay and the β‐carotene bleaching method. The dried seaweeds showed lower phenolic contents and lower antioxidant capacities than the fresh and frozen ones, which suggests that the phenolic content and antioxidant activities are decreased by the drying treatments, especially, oven‐ and greenhouse‐drying. Relationships between TPC, antioxidant properties and conditioning treatments are discussed.  相似文献

The brown alga Sphacelaria rigidula Kützing synthesizes cellulose microfibrils as determined by CBH I-gold labeling. The cellulose microfibrils are thin, ribbon-like structures with a uniform thickness of about 2.6 nm and a variable width in the range of 2.6-30 nm. Some striations appear along the longitudinal axis of the microfibrils. The developed cell wall in Sphacelaria is composed of three to four layers, and cellulose micro-fibrils are deposited in the third layer from the outside of the wall. A freeze fracture investigation of this alga revealed cellulose-synthesizing terminal complexes (TCs), which are associated with the tip of microfibril impressions in the plasmatic fracture face of the plasma membrane. The TCs consist of subunits arranged in a single linear row. The average diameter of the sub-units is about 6 nm, and the intervals between the neighboring subunits, about 9 nm, are relatively constant. The number of subunits constituting the TC varies between 10 and 100, so that the length of the whole TC varies widely. A model that has been proposed for the assembly of thin, ribbon-like microfibrils was applied to microfibril assembly in Sphacelaria.  相似文献

A phytochrome-like protein was detected in extracts from the red algae Corallina elongata and Gelidium sp., from the brown algae Cystoseira abiesmarina and Cystoseira tamariscifolia, and from the green algae Ulva rigida, Enteromorpha compressa and Chara hispida. Relative amounts of the photoreversible protein were determined by measurement of Δ (ΔA) values of the crude extract. SDS gel electrophoresis and immunoblotting with monoclonal antibodies directed to phytochrome from etiolated maize and oat seedlings revealed only one phytochrome-related band with apparent molecular weight of 130 kDa. The absorption difference spectrum after partial purification showed a “normal” absorption band (λmax = 670 nm) for the Pr form but only a very weak band (λmax = 705 nm) for the “Pfr form”.  相似文献

Postelsia palmaeformis Ruprecht is an annual species, occuring from southern California to Vancouver Island, Canada, in upper intertidal sites exposed to extreme wave shock. Because of its limited spore dispersal, discrete and inbred populations are likely on the local scale, yet dispersal of drifting and fertile thalli raises the possibility of outbred populations on a regional scale. M13 minisatellite DNA fingerprinting and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) marks were used in a complementary fashion to investigate genetic variability among 24 individuals on scales of clusters (= coalesced holdfasts). < 1 m, 10 m, 25 m, 16 km, and 250 km. Based on M13 fingerprinting, genetic relatedness within clusters was extremely high. Three of six clusters had at hast two identical individuals, and similarity values within five clusters were ≧0.90. Similarities between two of three clusters separated by < 1 m were significantly higher than between cluster pairs separated by 25 m and 250 km: however, the similarity between two clusters separated by 25 m was equivalent to the similarity between two clusters separated by 250 km. Thus, genetic relatedness as determined by M13 fingerprinting generally decreased as distance increased to 25 m. Conversely, RAPD data easily discriminated populations separated by 16 and 250 km but were not useful in discriminating individuals from < 1 to 25 m. Results from the complementary data sets suggest that most dispersal occurs over distances of 1–5 m, individuals within a cluster are siblings, and distinguishable biogeographic populations are present along the coast.  相似文献
