The ground vegetation of an evergreen broad-leaved Persea thunbergii-dominated forest on Kanmurijima Island has been heavily damaged by a ground-burrowing seabird, the streaked shearwater (Calonectris leucomelas). To clarify the effects of seabird trampling and burrowing on the recruitment of tree seedlings, 22 paired quadrats, protected and unprotected against seabirds, were laid out under various degrees of canopy coverage, ranging from heavy- to light-shade. Protection from seabird activities resulted in an increase in species richness of tree seedlings. Seabird activities had a significant effect on tree seedling diversity, while canopy coverage was shown to be important for herbaceous species diversity. Though seedling emergence of Persea thunbergii, the evergreen canopy dominant, was not affected by seabird activities and canopy coverage, that of Mallotus japonicus, a deciduous pioneer tree, was negatively affected by the both factors. Seabird activities and evergreen heavy-shade canopy negatively affected seedling survivorship of both species. Low survivorship in seedlings of the canopy species may doom the present-day warm-temperate evergreen forest of Persea thunbergii on the island. Mechanical impacts of trampling and burrowing and the resulting soil erosion may play an important role in forest regeneration and dynamics.  相似文献

The effects of the naturally occurring polyamines, spermine, putrescine, and spermidine were explored on mitochondrial state 3. state 4, and uncoupled respiration activities, ADP/O ratio, respiratory control ratio of pepper ( Capsicum annuum L. cv. Early Cal Wonder) and avocado ( Persea americana Mill. cv. Booth-8 or Simmonds) mitochondria oxidizing either succinate, external NADH, malate, α-ketoglutarate or tetramethyl- p -phenylenediamine. Abnormally high concentrations of spermine and spermidine such as might occur during chilling stress of these chilling-sensitive fruits were detrimental to several oxidase activities, especially to external NADH oxidase. State 3 respiration for NADH oxidase was inhibited more than 70% by 10 m M spermine. The spermine inhibition of uncoupled NADH oxidase was not reversed by the presence of divalent cations including Ca2+, Mg2+, Mn2+, and Sr2+ at concentrations up to 10 m M or by 100 m M KCl. The inhibition primarily affected the Vmax. Other possible sites of polyamine interactions are discussed.  相似文献

Seedling establishment ofCastanopsis cuspidata var.sieboldii Nakai andPersea thunbergii Kosterm. (Machilus thunbergii Sieb. et Zucc.) in early succession was studied on the lava and the scoria of the 1962 eruption on Miyake-jima Island of the Izu Islands. While tall individuals (> 1 m) ofP. thunbergii were found on both the lava and the scoria, those ofC. cuspidata (> 1 m) were found only on the lava. The height growth rate ofC. cuspidata was very low on the scoria, and there was no individual ofC. cuspidata taller than 0.4 m on the scoria. The proportion of yellow leaved individuals was much higher (37.1%) inC. cuspidata than inP. thunbergii (4.0%) on the scoria, while it was similar between the two species on the lava.Persea thunbergii seemed to be able to establish on both the lava and the scoria, butC. cuspidata established only on the lava. The differences in growth rate and vigor between the two species on the lava and the scoria in early succession may influence later stages of succession.  相似文献

Summary Avocado (Persea americana) cultivars were assayed for phosphoglucose isomerase (PGI) isozymes using starch gel electrophoresis. Three PGI genes were identified: one monomorphic locus, Pgi-I, coding for the plastid isozyme and two independently assorting loci, Pgi-2 and Pgi-3, coding for the cytosolic isozymes. The genetic analysis was based on comparisons of PGI zymograms from somatic and pollen tissue and on Mendelian analysis of progeny from selfed trees. The isozymic variability for PGI can be used for cultivar identification and for differentiating between hybrid and selfed progeny in avocado breeding.  相似文献

Anthracnose disease surveys were conducted in 25 farmers’ orchards, wholesaler and retailer shops in south-west Ethiopia. In addition, harvesting and postharvest practices, and storage conditions influencing disease development were studied with observation and questionnaire. The assessment results indicated significant variation among farmers’ orchards with the highest incidence (84.0 ± 16.7%) and severity index (26.0 ± 5.4%). Anthracnose damage of fruit was higher at retailers (76.7 ± 20.8%) than in the wholesalers shop (56.7 ± 32.5%). The total number of isolates identified was 249 and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides was the predominant pathogen proved by pathogenecity test. Among the major factors, harvesting avocado fruits with children (88%) and climbing on the tree (72%) resulted in fruit dropping that caused substantial injury and bruise. Generally, anthracnose caused by C. gloeosporioides of avocado fruit was prevalent in producer orchards that aggravated by traditional harvest and postharvest practices coupled to inadequate transportation and storage facilities at wholesaler and retailer shops with subsequent decay and loss of avocado fruits.  相似文献

A high CO2 concentration (20%) at 20°C rapidly and strongly inhibited the development of the climacteric ethylene burst in apple ( Malus domestica Borkh. cv. Granny Smith) and avocado ( Persea americana Mill. cv. Fuerte) fruits and did not change 1-aminocyclopropane-l-carboxylic acid (ACC) content. Treatment with 20% CO2 markedly decreased ACC-dependent ethylene biosynthesis at 20°C in climacteric pericarp tissues. It is suggested, therefore, that high CO2 levels inhibit conversion of ACC to ethylene.
Synthesis of the ethylene forming enzyme (EFE) was enhanced when intact preclimacteric apples or early climacteric avocados were pretreated for 40 h with 10 μ11-1 ethylene. When CO2 (20%) and ethylene were both applied, a reduced stimulatory effect of ethylene on EFE synthesis was observed. A high CO2 concentration enhanced EFE acivity in excised tissues of apples and avocados incubated with ACC (2 m M ) and cycloheximide (1 m M ) or 2–5-norbornadiene (5 ml 1-1). In the autocatalytic process, 20% CO2 antagonized the stimulation of EFE synthesis by ethylene, but promoted EFE activity.  相似文献

The Hass avocado tree Persea americana cv. Hass was derived from a single hybrid tree of P. americana var. drymifolia and P. americana var. guatemalensis, and it is propagated clonally by grafting. This cultivar is the most widely planted in the world but its profile of secondary metabolites has been studied rarely despite of its importance in plant protection. We illustrate the variability of the volatilome of mature leaves by describing the average chemical composition and the phenotypic variability found in 70 trees. Contrary to the uniformity expected in the Hass cultivar, high variability coefficients were found for most of the 36 detected foliar volatile compounds; furthermore we found six chemotypes grouping the foliar phenotypes of the sampled trees using hierarchical cluster analysis. About 48% of trees were grouped in one chemotype; five chemotypes grouped the remaining trees. The compounds that determined these chemotypes were: estragole, α‐farnesene, β‐caryophyllene, germacrene D, α‐cubebene and eugenol. This striking variation in a cultivar propagated clonally is discussed in terms of somatic mutation.  相似文献

Background and Aims

The phenomenon of self-assembly, widespread in both the living and the non-living world, is a key mechanism in sporoderm pattern formation. Observations in developmental palynology appear in a new light if they are regarded as aspects of a sequence of micellar colloidal mesophases at genomically controlled initial parameters. The exine of Persea is reduced to ornamentaion (spines and gemmae with underlying skin-like ectexine); there is no endexine. Development of Persea exine was analysed based on the idea that ornamentation of pollen occurs largely by self-assembly.

Methods

Flower buds were collected from trees grown in greenhouses over 11 years in order to examine all the main developmental stages, including the very short tetrad period. After fixing, sections were examined using transmission electron microscopy.

Key Results and Conclusions

The locations of future spines are determined by lipid droplets in invaginations of the microspore plasma membrane. The addition of new sporopollenin monomers into these invaginations leads to the appearance of chimeric polymersomes, which, after splitting into two individual assemblies, give rise to both liquid-crystal conical ‘skeletons’ of spines and spherical micelles. After autopolymerization of sporopollenin, spines emerge around their skeletons, nested into clusters of globules. These clusters and single globules between spines appear on a base of spherical micelles. The intine also develops on the base of micellar mesophases. Colloidal chemistry helps to provide a more general understanding of the processes and explains recurrent features of pollen walls from remote taxa.  相似文献
