Summary The skin colour of the cichlid teleost Sarotherodon mossambicus adapted rapidly to changes in background colour. The physiological adaptation was associated with morphological changes in the dermis. Differences in the dermis were found between fish adapted to a black or white background for 14 days. Number and size of the melanophores as well as the amount of pigment in the cytoplasm of the melanophores were significantly increased in fish adapted to a black background. Changes in the dermis parallelled changes in the state of activity of the two endocrine cell types in the pars intermedia of the pituitary. Both the PAS positive cells and the MSH producing cells were more active when the fish were exposed to a black rather than a white background. Fish continuously infused with -MSH, using an osmotic minipump, had more melanophore cytoplasm and pigment per dermis surface unit area than untreated fish. The activity of the MSH cells in MSH-infused fish exposed to a black background was reduced to a level comparable to the MSH cell activity of untreated fish on a white background. -MSH treated fish that were exposed to a white background had many disintegrating MSH cells. These findings point to inactivation of these cells by exogenous -MSH. The activity of the PAS positive cells was not influenced by treatment with -MSH.  相似文献

Summary The pars tuberalis of the hypophysis in the monkey Macaca irus encompasses the hypophysial stem up to the median eminence. Histologically, it consists of several layers of chromophobic cells. A few PAS1-positive cells also stainable with Alcian blue (pH 3.0) can be observed among the unstained elements. Using the indirect immunofluorescence antibody technique, scattered immunoreactive cells were revealed with the anti-oLH antibody; these cells did not react with the anti-hFSH antibody. In contrast, the immunoreactions to anti-hGH, anti-hPRL, anti-ACTH, anti-MSH, anti-LPH and anti-endorphin sera were completely negative. Single cells reacting with the anti-hTSH serum were observed at the inferior end of the hypophysial stalk (zona tuberalis), i.e., beyond the pars tuberalis proper. These results are compared with data reported in the literature.
Résumé La pars tuberalis de l'hypophyse du Singe Macacus irus entoure la tige infundibulaire jusqu'à l'éminence médiane. En techniques histologiques, elle apparaît constituée de plusieurs assises cellulaires d'aspect chromophobe. On y observe quelques cellules PAS-positives réagissant simultanément avec le bleu Alcian (pH3.0). En technique d'immunofluorescence indirecte, des cellules dispersées sont mises en évidence uniquement avec un anticorps anti-oLH; ces cellules ne réagissent pas avec un anticorps anti-hFSH. L'utilisation d'anticorps anti-hGH, anti-hPRL, anti-ACTH, anti-MSH, anti-LPH et antiendorphines ne permet pas de révéler des cellules immunoréactives. Quelques cellules réagissant avec un anticorps anti-hTSH s'observent à la base de la tige hypophysaire (zona tuberalis), c'est-à-dire au-delà de la pars tuberalis proprement dite. Ces résultats sont confrontés à ceux rapportés dans la littérature.

Telford S. P., Jr. 1978. The saurian malarias of Venezuela: haemosporidian parasites of gekkonid lizards. International Journal for Parasitology8: 341–353. Five haemosporidian species were found among 185 gekkonid lizards from Estados Portuguesa, Cojedes and Aragua, Venezuela, four of which were new to science. A pigmented Plasmodium species is described from Gonatodes taniae of Estado Aragua. It produces 8–20 merozoites in variably shaped schizonts, and elongate, irregularly margined prematuration gametocytes which contract to form round to broadly elongate mature gametocytes. Phyllodactylus ventralis of Estado Portuguesa is parasitized by two new unpigmented malarial species. One produces 11–35 merozoites in schizonts which are often rounded or elongated, occasionally fan-shaped. Gametocytes are always elongated and usually lie diagonally across one end of the host cell or laterally to the nucleus. The second species forms rounded mature schizonts nearly filled with 14–32 merozoites. The sexual stages are usually round or oval, rarely elongate. Plasmodium aurulentum Telford, 1971 was found in Thecadactylus raplcaudus of Estados Portuguesa and Cojedes. A single Thecadactylus from Cojedes was infected by a haemosporidian species of uncertain generic identity which resembles a parasite found earlier in a Panamanian gecko.  相似文献

The Argentine root-boring weevil Heilipodus ventralis (Hustache) is a candidate for biological control of the perennial snakeweeds Gutierrezia sarothrae (Pursh) Britton and Rusby and G. microcephala (DeCandolle) A. Gray, poisonous native weeds of rangelands of the southwestern United States. In Argentina, the weevil occurs in semiarid regions from Tucumán south to Chubut, which are climatically similar to broad areas of the southwestern United States. Laboratory-reared females lived ca. 112 days and laid ca. 117 eggs. The eggs hatched in ca. 15 days. The larvae had eight instars; they required ca. 151 days and pupae ca. 27 days to develop. Adult weevils emerged from the taproots in early summer, fed on the leaves and terminals, and oviposited mostly in the crown near the soil line. The feeding of one or more pairs of caged adults killed medium-sized plants. The larvae tunneled downward to the taproot where they pupated. They overwintered in the taproots of these perennial host plants and pupated in the spring. A generation required 1 year but some individuals probably required two growing seasons. At Peninsula Valdés, Chubut, H. ventralis preferred Gutierrezia solbrigii Cabrera to Grindelia chiloensis (Corn.) Cabrera by a ratio of 1.9 to 1.0. In the field there, crowns of large Gu. solbrigii (average 60 cm canopy diameter) contained an average 5.0 larvae per plant, those of small plants (23 cm diameter) contained 1.1 larvae, and plants smaller than 10 cm rarely contained larvae. No insect parasitoids or predators were found attacking any stage. H. ventralis probably evolved on xerophytic, temperate Astereae, from ancestors of the genus Heilipus that fed on species of ancient, hygrophytic, tropical plant families.  相似文献

Molecular studies on Drosophila melanogaster do not provide consistent results with regard to the hormonal regulation of a trade-off between life-span and fecundity. To unravel the physiological basis of the cost of reproduction without affecting animal's genotype, a new insect model, Pyrrhocoris apterus, was employed. Reproduction was manipulated by surgical ablations of tissues implicated in reproductive endocrinology, namely the pars intercerebralis (PI) of the brain, the corpus allatum (CA) and the ovary, and the response of life-span to these interventions under diapause-promoting short days and reproduction-promoting long days was measured. Morphological and electrical properties of neurons with somata in the pars intercerebralis (PI) and pars lateralis (PL) were examined by intracellular recording and staining in the adult blow fly, Protophormia terraenovae. According to the location of somata and fiber distribution, two types of PI neurons (PIa and PIb) and two types of PL neurons (PLa and PLb) were identified. PIb neurons were further divided into two subgroups of PIb1 and PIb2 depending on fiber branching patterns in the retrocerebral complex. PIa neurons projected axons to the contralateral nervi corporis cardiaci, whereas PLa and PLb neurons projected axons to the ipsilateral nervi corporis cardiaci. PIb neurons characteristically showed symmetrical morphology with their somata along the midline. PLb neurons had a large branching area in the subesophageal ganglion. In the retrocerebral complex, PIb2 and PLa neurons sent fibers into the corpus allatum. PIa, PIb1 and PLb neurons projected not to the corpus allatum but to the corpus cardiacum–hypocerebral complex or visceral muscles in their vicinity. PIa, PIb and PLa neurons showed long spike durations (3–10 ms). PLb neurons were immunoreactive with antisera against corazonin, FMRFamide, or -pigment-dispersing hormone. The genus Gryllus includes 82 described species that occur in America from Canada to Argentina as well as in several areas of Africa, Europe and Asia. There are 12 species in South America, which were described in the nineteenth century based on a small number of samples and inconsistent characters such as body coloration and external morphology. The aim of this article is to redescribe Gryllus argentinus Saussure, 1874 collected in the urban areas of Pelotas, Capão do Leão and Rio Grande, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil, highlighting phallic sclerites, calling song and body morphometry. We designate the lectotype male, provide a combination of diagnostic characteristics and discuss the taxonomic situation of South American Gryllus species.  相似文献

Summary Hormone release from the pars intermedia is under inhibitory control of the hypothalamus. Control may be mediated via dopaminergic fibers which directly contact secretory cells. Administration of reserpine in vivo to adult male rats for four consecutive days results in major alternations in pars intermedia cytology. Cells show expanded areas and whorls of rough endoplasmic reticulum, as well as extensive Golgi zones with numerous dense granules. Some nerve fibers exhibit alterations in vesicle content, while others retain a more normal appearance. Freeze-fracture of glands from reserpine-treated animals provides evidence for exocytosis of granules, although such phenomena are not observed in thin sections. The ultrastructural findings suggest that reserpine alters the content of local inhibitory neurotransmitters in the pars intermedia, leading to unrestrained hormone release, followed by renewed granule synthesis.My thanks to Ms. Judi DeLongo for skillful technical assistance  相似文献

Summary Although exposure to acid water (pH 3.5) induces severe and prolonged reduction in plasma osmolarity and total plasma calcium concentration in tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus) and goldfish (Carassius auratus), the responses of the hypophyseal cells are clearly different. In tilapia, the size of the rostral pars distalis of the pituitary gland is enlarged as a result of the increase in size and number of prolactin cells. The pars intermedia PAS-positive (PIPAS) cells are not noticeably changed. Conversely, in goldfish, prolactin cells are unaffected, whereas the number of enlarged PIPAS cells increases markedly. Stimulation of prolactin secretion may be responsible for the partial restoration of plasma osmolarity and calcium levels observed in tilapia after two weeks exposure to acid water. Prolactin cells apparently play a role in the adaptation to acid stress by counteracting osmoregulatory disturbances. Goldfish show no restoration of plasma osmolarity during the course of the experiment. Plasma calcium levels tend to increase. Although prolactin may have an osmoregulatory function in goldfish under steady state conditions, goldfish prolactin cells do not seem to participate in the physiological adaptation to environmental changes that disturb water and ion homeostasis. The function of PIPAS cells in tilapia remains unclear and is apparently unconnected with ion regulation. The observations on these cells in goldfish are consistent with the hypercalcemic activity suggested for them.  相似文献
