Pseudomonas fluorescens biovar I was isolated from a pulp mill effluent based on its ability to grow on synthetic media containing 1,2-diarylethane structures as the sole carbon and energy source. Analysis of samples taken from cultures of this strain in benzoin or 4,4-dimethoxybenzoin (anisoin), showed that cleavage between the two aliphatic carbons takes place prior to ring fission. Intermonomeric cleavage was also obtained with crude extracts. Substrates of this reaction were only those 1,2-diarylethane compounds that supported growth of the bacterium. The purification and partial characterization of an enzyme that catalyzes the NADH-dependent reduction of the carbonyl group of benzoin and anisoin is also reported. 相似文献

Under certain conditions a cannibalistic population can survive when food for the adults is too scarce to support a non-cannibalistic population. Cannibalism can have this lifeboat effect if (i) the juveniles feed on a resource inaccessible to the adults; and (ii) the adults are cannibalistic and thus incorporate indirectly the inaccessible resource. Using a simple model we conclude that the mechanism works when, at low population densities, the average yield, in terms of new offspring, due to the energy provided by one cannibalized juvenile is larger than one. 相似文献

The CSF and sera of 7 patients with Parkinson's disease were investigated immunocytochemically, in order to see if antibodies were present which recognized DA-ergic cell bodies in glutaraldehyde fixed rat brain. In 2 patients a marked labeling of DA-ergic neurons in the substantia nigra was observed, identified by anti-DA antiserum and by 6-OHDA induced degeneration, but also other neurons in the ventral mesencephalon were recognized. The other patients were weakly positive or negative. Sera gave unspecific labelling of all neurons. In one patient the sub-classes of IgG were investigated and found to be of IgG3 (labeling nerve terminals) and of IgG1–2, low affinity type (recognizing perikarya). The epitopes recognized have not been identified, but are unlikely to be DA-like, since blocking experiments and ELISA-tests gave negative results. Abstract The cell surface hydrophobicity of Renibacterium salmoninarum strains was examined using a salt aggregation method. Those strains which were virulent in the test animal were sticky, auto-agglutinating and possessed a hydrophobic cell surface. Those strains with a low virulence were non-sticky, non-agglutinating and failed to aggregate in a high molar salt. Strains could not be distinguished using biochemical tests. Shoot apices ofCarica papaya were multiplied in vitro on solidified nutrient media supplemented with -naphthyl-acetic acid and 6-benzylaminopurine. The micropropagated shoots were inoculated in vitro, through a stem wound, with a sporangial suspension (1.2×104 sporangia ml-1) ofPhytophthora palmivora. The symptoms exhibited by the shoots in vitro were similar to those described previously for infection of the whole plant in the field. The time taken for the host tissue to become brown and to wilt and the time to sporulation of the pathogen were all recorded for each shoot of four varieties of papaya challenged with each of ten isolates ofP. palmivora. Significant differences were observed between host-pathogen combinations for these variables and host-specificity was detected amongst the isolates ofP. palmivora. The time taken for the shoot to wilt was positively correlated with the time to sporulation of the isolated but both these variables were negatively correlated with the time to browning of the shoot. In vitro selection for disease resistance will be useful during breeding programmes involving papaya genotypes which are maintained through clonal propagation. 相似文献

Limited proteolysis (papain) of the cellobiohydrolase I (CBH I, 65 kDa) from Trichoderma reesei led to the seperation of two functional domains: a core protein (55 kDa) containing the active site, and a C-terminal glycopeptide (10 kDa) implicated in binding to the insoluble matrix (cellulose). The quaternary structures of the intact CBH I and its core in solution are now compared by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) measurements. The molecular parameters derived for the core (Rg=2.09 nm, Dmax=6.5 nm) and for the intact enzyme (Rg=4.27 nm, Dmax=18 nm) indicate very different shapes. The resulting models show a tadpole-like structure for the intact enzyme where the isotropic part coincides with the core protein and the flexible tail part should be identified with the C-terminal glycopeptide. Thus in this enzyme, functional differentiation is reflected in structural peculiarities.Abbreviations SAXS

A model is proposed for the effect of gramicidin A on the order and structure of phospholipid dispersions. According to this model, the addition of gramicidin A influences the surrounding lipids via two independent mechanisms. The first arises from a drop in surface pressure for those lipids substantially bounded by gramicidin A. The second mechanism arises from the increase in the phospholipid headgroup spacing due to the small polar region of the polypeptide. The model provides an explanation for the currently available NMR, X-ray diffraction and Langmuir monolayer results. The model also suggests mechanisms for the ability of gramicidin A to trigger a transition of the lipid from the lamellar to hexagonal II phase, the dependence of this transition on the lipid chain length and the formation of a lamellar phase with lysophosphatidylcholine.Abbreviations NMR

Data on the physico-chemical properties of proteins from soybean, groundnut, sesame seed, sunflower seed, safflower seed,
mustard seed, rapeseed and cotton seed are fairly extensive. An examination of the available data on high molecular weight
proteins suggests that there are similarities in many of their properties. In this report the similarity in amino acid composition,
size and shape, molecular weight, secondary structure, subunit composition, association-dissociation at high and low pH, stability
towards denaturants, hydrolysis by enzymes and quaternary structure of the high molecular weight proteins is discussed. Based

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is associated with degenerative changes in nuclei of the basal forebrain which provide most of the cholinergic input to the cortex and hippocampus and with a reduction in presynaptic cholinergic parameters in these areas. Although the etiology and pathogenesis of AD are not known, several reports indicate the involvement of immunological mechanisms. In the present work we examined the existence of antibodies in sera of AD patients that bind specifically to cholinergic neurons. As antigens we employed the purely cholinergic electromotor neurons of the electric fish Torpedo which are chemically homogeneous and cross-react antigenically with human and other mammalian cholinergic neurons. Our findings show that immunoglobulins from sera of AD patients bind to a specific antigen (molecular mass 200 kilodaltons) in the cell bodies and axons of Torpedo electromotor neurons and that the levels of such antibodies are significantly higher in AD patients than in controls. The possible role of these antibodies in the cholinergic dysfunction in AD and their diagnostic potential are discussed. 相似文献
