A new miniature species of Characidium is described from the upper Rio Paraguay basin, Brazil. The new species can be diagnosed from all congeners by the presence of a dark-brown humeral blotch, vertically elongated (spanning 5 to 7 horizontal scale rows), with the shape of an upside-down acute triangle. Additionally, it can be diagnosed by a short lateral line (6 to 8 perforated scales), the absence of a conspicuous peduncular blotch, a lower number of principal caudal-fin rays (14–16) and by absence of the adipose fin. The new species is the smallest species of the genus; the largest specimen was 19.3 mm standard length.  相似文献

Petunia axillaris occurs in temperate South America and consists of three allopatric subspecies: axillaris, parodii, and subandina. Previous studies have revealed that subsp. axillaris is self-incompatible (SI), subsp. parodii is self-compatible (SC) in Uruguay, and subsp. subandina is SC in Argentina. The SI/SC status over the entire distribution range is not completely understood, however. The objective of this study was to examine the overall SI/SC status of the respective subspecies in comparison with floral morphology. The results confirmed that subsp. parodii and subsp. subandina were SC throughout the distribution range, and that subsp. axillaris was also SC in Brazil and in most of the Argentinean territory. The SI P. axillaris occurs in the natural population only between 34 and 36°S, along the eastern shore of South America. The Brazilian and Uruguayan subsp. axillaris differed in SI/SC status and floral morphology. We discuss the cause of this difference.  相似文献

BackgroundItapúa is a rural department in Paraguay with a population of about 500,000 and a high degree of agro-mechanization for the production of soybean and other crops. So far, only basic health care is provided. Here we analyzed the cancer mortality in this region as a first step towards epidemiological data for cancer prevention.MethodsWe calculated the age-adjusted mortality rates according to world standard (AMRWs) for the major cancer sites in both males and females between 2003 and 2012, and estimated the differences between the capital and more central districts of Itapúa vs. remote districts.ResultsThere were about 2000 cancer deaths in the decade studied, with AMRWs for all malignancies of 90.9/100,000 in males from central vs. 49.1/100,000 in remote districts and 69.0/100,000 vs. 45.0/100,000 in women. Cancer was mentioned in 12.4% of all death certificates and outweighed mortality from certain infectious and parasitic diseases (3.6%). Cause of death was ill-defined in 19.6% of all death certificates, especially in remote regions and among the elderly. The part of cancer located in the uterus (47.8%) or cell type of neoplasm of the lymphatic or hematopoietic system (73.1%) were often not specified. The uterus (mainly the cervix) (C53–C55) was the leading cancer site in women with AMRWs of 17.2/100,000 in central and 14.0/100,000 in remote districts, followed by the breast. Lung and prostate were the leading cancer sites among men. The lung cancer mortality rate was 19.3/100,000 in the central region but 9.5/100,000 in remote districts. Although children comprised 36% of the population, only 24 death certificates listed cancer as cause of death in this decade.ConclusionsAnalysis of cancer mortality in this rural region of Paraguay, which lacks resources for diagnostics and care, revealed an already large number of cases, with higher rates in the central region than in remote districts. Lung and uterus (primarily the cervix) are common cancer sites and indicate the potential for prevention. However, the quality of the vital statistics needs to be improved. The true cancer burden is most likely underestimated, especially in remote regions and children.  相似文献

Two distinctive new species of the Neotropical stingless bee genus Paratrigona Schwarz from Ecuador and Paraguay are described and figured. The Ecuadorian species, Paratrigona scapisetosasp. n.,belongs to the haeckeli-lineatifrons group and is easily distinguished from its congeners by the unique shape and pubescence of the antennal scape, which is distinctly convex on its outer margin and bears thick, long, simple hairs along its inner margin. The Paraguayan species, Paratrigona wasbauerisp. n.,belongs to the lineata group and is easily distinguished by the pattern of body pubescence in both sexes and male genitalic characters. The male of the Mesoamerican species Paratrigona ornaticeps (Schwarz) is described and figured. New geographical records for Paratrigona impunctata and Paratrigona opaca, and an updated key to the haeckeli-lineatifrons and lineata species groups are provided.  相似文献

The crown morphology of 202 dental casts from living Lengua Indians is described and compared with other Amerind, Melanesian, and Caucasoid samples. The Lengua dentition shows a high Mongoloid component with little effects of possible European admixture, thus supporting the theory that despite early Franciscan and Jesuit attempts at missionization, much of the Paraguayan Chaco has remained genetically and culturally relatively intact well into the present century. A finding of note was the apparent sexual dimorphism of the Carabelli cusp, which questions earlier assumptions that no correction for sex need be made in population studies when dealing with this trait. Since mandibular canines show proportionately less wear in the canine distal accessory ridge area than maxillary canines, the value of the incidence of this trait in population and microevolutionary studies is questioned.  相似文献

We compared environmental influences on the assemblages of stream fishes of contiguous but biogeographically distinct parts of the Upper Paraguay and Paraná basins in Brazil, aiming to describe the main distribution patterns of fish species in the headwater streams. We analyzed bimonthly samples in 10 streams in each basin from January to November 2004. Sixty fish species were collected, including 40 species in streams of the Paraguay Basin and 42 species in streams of the Paraná Basin. The species abundance rank did not differ between the basins. We found a clear differentiation between the Paraguay and Paraná stream fish assemblages. There were significant differences in species composition among streams, but no seasonal differences in species composition. Connectivity between streams explains the differences in species composition for the Paraguay streams, but not for the Paraná streams. Hydrological characteristics were the main factors determining species distribution in both basins, suggesting that the migratory capacity of each species and biogeographical barriers may act to filter the local species composition from the total species pool of colonizers. Aim This paper uses data from the literature (monographs and taxonomic reviews) to investigate the geographical zonation in South America of 32 common tree species encountered in Paraguay. The actual spatial distribution of the species is then used to provide clues on the plant communities present in the past, and especially during the Wisconsinan age (Last major ice age: 80,000–10,000 bp ). The floristic relatedness between the Paraguayan flora and the neighbouring floras is also investigated. Methods The main vegetation patterns were highlighted using a Discriminant Analysis of the Eigenvectors of Neighbourhood Operator to emphasize the geographical zonation in South America of 32 tree species predominant in the Paraguay‐Paraná Basin. Results Three main vegetation patterns were emphasized: the Chaco, the Paraná‐São Francisco gradient and the Peri‐Amazonian gradient. The Chaco is well defined. The Peri‐Amazonian gradient is characterized by a continuous change in species from the Colombian pole towards the São Francisco pole. The São Francisco gradient shows a continuous change from the São Francisco pole towards the Paraná pole. Some of the species are monocentric (related to only one dispersal centre), whereas others are polycentric (distributed in several poles). Main conclusions The Chaquean xeromorphic forests are considered as a climax, with a stable composition resulting of the saline soil conditions. The Chaco acts as an edaphic barrier to many species, although the migration of some non‐Chaquean species is made possible by the net of gallery‐forests and low montane forests between the Río Paraguay and the Andean Piedmont. The Cerrado and the Chaco can be considered as a barrier limiting the expansion of the Paranean forest. This latter formation is a semi‐deciduous forest made of a mix of monocentric and polycentric elements. The numerous species found both in Colombia and in Paraná indicate that bridges exist, or have existed, between these two poles. The persistence in the Paraguay‐Paraná Basin of a moist forest made of the Paranean assemblages highlighted in this study confirms the hypothesis of moister and cooler phases than today.  相似文献

Aim Because of the obligatory relationship between endoparasitoids and their hosts, we presume that hosts exert strong selection pressure on parasitoids. One prediction is a positive relationship between host diversity and parasitoid richness. This relationship could be the product of resource availability which could lead to more opportunities for speciation, or could represent shared responses to the environment by both groups. Location Argentina and Paraguay. Methods We sampled a 1800‐km transect to test for a correlation between the richness of leaf‐cutting ant hosts and their phorid parasitoids. Regression models were used to assess if host and environmental variables could explain phorid species richness at nest, hectare and locality spatial scales. We used canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) to explore if there were similar responses of phorid species to particular host and environmental variables at different spatial scales, and partial CCA to separate the relative importance of both groups of variables. Results Phorid richness was positively correlated with host richness. Host richness/abundance accounted for 20–53% of the variation in parasitoid richness at the hectare and locality scales of analysis, with most of the variation accounted for by ant abundance. We were not able to assess the prediction at the nest scale as only one phorid species was found at most nests. Climatic variables did not explain phorid species richness once host variables were in the models. Partial CCA showed that host‐related variables accounted for most of the variance associated with phorid species ordination at the nest and hectare scales, but not at the largest grain, the locality, where climatic variables were more important. However, most phorid species did not show particular positions along the climatic gradient. Main conclusions The association between parasitoid richness and host richness and abundance, and the overall weak associations with environmental variables, suggest that these host variables are key factors influencing parasitoid speciation.  相似文献
