Many people suffer from allergic diseases and much research has illustrated that pollen can play an important role in inducing such diseases. The fact that allergic symptoms are more prevalent in larger cities may be related to the increase in air pollution resulting from the mineral or synthetic materials released into the atmosphere by cars and factories. On the other hand, recent investigations have considered that it is the exinic mineral elements which induce or control pollen allergenicity. Different degrees of Pinus elderica allergenicity in guinea pigs were studied along with the ultrastructural changes and variation in the mineral element concentration of the pollen exine after exposure of the pollen to the atmosphere of Tehran for certain periods. The results were analyzed qualitively and also statistically by the unpaired T test, whenever necessary. P values of < 0.005 were considered significant.  相似文献

Pollen of grasses (Poaceae) is one of the most important airborne allergen sources worldwide. The aim of the study was to determine diurnal, day‐to‐day, weekly, monthly and annual pollen variation, and the effect of selected meteorological parameters on atmospheric pollen concentrations in Zagreb. A preliminary study was carried out during four seasons (2002 – 2005), using a 7‐day VPPS 2000 Hirst volumetric pollen trap. Total annual grass pollen concentrations in Zagreb were constant (2 673 – 3 074 p.g.m?3), with a relative drop in 2004 (1 196 p.g.m?3). The beginning of the grass pollen season is usually observed when the average daily temperature exceeds 13.5°C (max. daily temp. 19.5°C), without precipitation. In all four study years the absolute peak of concentrations occurs in the second half of May. The length of pollen season during the study period was 157 – 173 days. A high variability was observed in the maximal concentration and in the number of days when grass pollen concentration exceeded the threshold value of 30 p.g.m?3 (9 – 40 days). Statistically significant correlations were found between airborne grass pollen concentrations and air temperature, level of precipitation and relative humidity.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Selective pressures exerted by agriculture on populations of arable weeds foster the evolution of adaptive traits. Germination and emergence dynamics and herbicide resistance are key adaptive traits. Herbicide resistance alleles can have pleiotropic effects on a weed''s life cycle. This study investigated the pleiotropic effects of three acetyl-coenzyme A carboxylase (ACCase) alleles endowing herbicide resistance on the seed-to-plant part of the life cycle of the grass weed Alopecurus myosuroides.

Methods

In each of two series of experiments, A. myosuroides populations with homogenized genetic backgrounds and segregating for Leu1781, Asn2041 or Gly2078 ACCase mutations which arose independently were used to compare germination dynamics, survival in the soil and seedling pre-emergence growth among seeds containing wild-type, heterozygous and homozygous mutant ACCase embryos.

Key Results

Asn2041 ACCase caused no significant effects. Gly2078 ACCase major effects were a co-dominant acceleration in seed germination (1·25- and 1·10-fold decrease in the time to reach 50 % germination (T50) for homozygous and heterozygous mutant embryos, respectively). Segregation distortion against homozygous mutant embryos or a co-dominant increase in fatal germination was observed in one series of experiments. Leu1781 ACCase major effects were a co-dominant delay in seed germination (1·41- and 1·22-fold increase in T50 for homozygous and heterozygous mutant embryos, respectively) associated with a substantial co-dominant decrease in fatal germination.

Conclusions

Under current agricultural systems, plants carrying Leu1781 or Gly2078 ACCase have a fitness advantage conferred by herbicide resistance that is enhanced or counterbalanced, respectively, by direct pleiotropic effects on the plant phenology. Pleiotropic effects associated with mutations endowing herbicide resistance undoubtedly play a significant role in the evolutionary dynamics of herbicide resistance in weed populations. Mutant ACCase alleles should also prove useful to investigate the role played by seed storage lipids in the control of seed dormancy and germination.  相似文献

The successful establishment of trees in pastures may be related to species, seed size, and weed control treatments. This study experimentally evaluated the emergence, establishment after 2 years, and growth of individuals of 7 tree species with different seed sizes sowed under three weeding methods (no weeding, grasses clipped, and grasses removed). The experiment was carried out in a tropical abandoned pasture in Midwestern Brazil, dominated by the exotic invasive grass Urochloa brizantha. The effect of seed size on seedling emergence was significant and was more intense in the no weeding and weeding treatment plots than in grasses clipped. Furthermore, an increase in seed size resulted in an increase in the probability of establishment of tree species, although this pattern also differed among weeding treatments. The increase in seed size reflected negatively on tree growth in the absence of grasses, whereas in the presence of grasses there was an inverse relationship. The experimental results suggested that the use of seeds of different sizes for direct seeding in pastures is a possible strategy of Fabaceae tree species reintroduction in pastures within the Cerrado. Fabaceae species with seeds larger than 100 mg can establish in areas with no weeding, whereas species with seeds smaller than 50 mg can establish preferentially in areas with weeding, growing faster than larger ones. Thus, weeding strategies can determine the success of direct seeding of different species in restoration projects of tropical pastures.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to determine the effects of the potential methane reducer fumaric acid on the fattening performance and acid–base balance of growing bulls fed two different silage types as roughage (maize and grass silage). A total of 62 fattening bulls (German Holstein breed, initial body weight: 266 ± 42 kg), randomly assigned to eight feeding groups, received four levels of fumaric acid (0, 100, 200 or 300 g/d) at each silage type. The daily feed and water intake and the live weight were measured over the whole testing period of 280 days. In blood samples, blood cells and blood gases as a parameter of acid–base status were analysed. Feed and faeces were collected to determine the apparent nutrient digestibility. Five animals from each group fed maize or grass silage, supplemented with 0 g or 300 g fumaric acid, were slaughtered at 580 kg body weight. After slaughter, rumen fluid pH was measured and dressing percentage was calculated. Neither the total feed intake (8.81 ± 0.07 kg/d) nor the daily weight gain (1277±24 g/d) was influenced significantly by treatments. Fumaric acid supplementation did not influence the erythrocyte count or the blood gas concentration. The silage type significantly influenced the apparent digestibility of the whole diet. The dressing percentage was slightly higher (p < 0.1) after fumaric acid supplementation. No signs of an incompatibility to fumaric acid on the animals were observed over the whole experimental period. However, it seems to be necessary to conduct more long-term studies with different silage types and addition of organic acids combined with direct measurements of methane.  相似文献

Summary

The Lichen flora of Rhum is described with emphasis on its ecology. In general, the 387 species represent a fine example of eu-oceanic assemblages and contain many taxa typical of western Britain. The margins of freshwater lochs hold particularly rich communities; the flora of the serpentine is singular for its narrow range of species. There is some evidence that existing fragments of woodland have continuity with the ancient forest. Lecanactis plocina is reported new to Scotland.  相似文献

Abstract: Mute swans (Cygnus olor) are poorly studied despite their potential to impact submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV). We measured vegetation characteristics (i.e., percent cover, shoot density, and canopy ht) of SAV beds in controls (unfenced), 2-year exclosures, and 1-year exclosures at 18 sites in the Chesapeake Bay, Maryland, USA, to quantify the impact of herbivory by mute swans on SAV during 2003 and 2004. Mute swan herbivory had a substantial adverse impact on percent cover, shoot density, and canopy height of SAV. At the end of the study mean percent cover, shoot density, and canopy height in the controls were lower by 79%, 76%, and 40%, respectively, as compared to those in 2-year exclosures. During 2004, percent cover, shoot density, and canopy height increased by 26%, 15%, and 22%, respectively, between early and late seasons of SAV growth in exclosures, but they decreased by 36%, 41%, and 18%, respectively, in the controls. Paired mute swans predominantly occupied 6 of 7 moderate-depth sites (0.76-0.99 m), and these sites experienced less (i.e., 32-75%) SAV reduction. All (n = 7) shallow water sites (0.50-0.75 m) were predominantly occupied by mute swan flocks, and percent cover reduction of SAV was as high as 75-100% at these sites. Mute swan flocks also predominantly occupied 3 of the 5 deep-water sites (≥1 m) and 1 of 7 moderate-depth sites, wherein we recorded considerable (i.e., 77-93%) SAV reduction. Thus, considering that flocks are more detrimental to SAV as compared to paired mute swans, we recommend that initial emphasis primarily be placed on controlling mute swans in flocks and secondarily on pairs.  相似文献

Plant–plant interactions can be a complex mixture of positive and negative interactions, with the net outcome depending on abiotic and community contexts. In savanna systems, the effects of large herbivores on tree–grass interactions have rarely been studied experimentally, though these herbivores are major players in these systems. In African savannas, trees often become more abundant under heavy cattle grazing but less abundant in wildlife preserves. Woody encroachment where cattle have replaced wild herbivores may be caused by a shift in the competitive balance between trees and grasses. Here we report the results of an experiment designed to quantify the positive, negative, and net effects of grasses, wild herbivores, and cattle on Acacia saplings in a Kenyan savanna. Acacia drepanolobium saplings under four long-term herbivore regimes (wild herbivores, cattle, cattle + wild herbivores, and no large herbivores) were cleared of surrounding grass or left with the surrounding grass intact. After two years, grass-removal saplings exhibited 86% more browse damage than control saplings, suggesting that grass benefited saplings by protecting them from herbivory. However, the negative effect of grass on saplings was far greater; grass-removal trees accrued more than twice the total stem length of control trees. Where wild herbivores were present, saplings were browsed more and produced more new stem growth. Thus, the net effect of wild herbivores was positive, possibly due to the indirect effects of lower competitor tree density in areas accessible to elephants. Additionally, colonization of saplings by symbiotic ants tracked growth patterns, and colonized saplings experienced lower rates of browse damage. These results suggest that savanna tree growth and woody encroachment cannot be predicted by grass cover or herbivore type alone. Rather, tree growth appears to depend on a variety of factors that may be acting together or antagonistically at different stages of the tree’s life cycle.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Survival of many herbaceous species in Mediterranean habitats during the dry, hot summer depends on the induction of summer dormancy by changes in environmental conditions during the transition between the winter (growth) season to the summer (resting) season, i.e. longer days, increasing temperature and drought. In Poa bulbosa, a perennial geophytic grass, summer dormancy is induced by long days, and the induction is enhanced by high temperature. Here the induction of summer dormancy in a Mediterranean perennial grass by water deficit under non-inductive photoperiodic conditions is reported for the first time. METHODS: Plants grown under 22/16 degrees C and non-inductive short-day (9 h, SD) were subjected to water deficit (WD), applied as cycles of reduced irrigation, or sprayed with ABA solutions. They were compared with plants in which dormancy was induced by transfer from SD to inductive long-day (16 h, LD). Responses of two contrasting ecotypes, from arid and mesic habitats were compared. Dormancy relaxation in bulbs from these ecotypes and treatments was studied by comparing sprouting capacity in a wet substrate at 10 degrees C of freshly harvested bulbs to that of dry-stored bulbs at 40 degrees C. Endogenous ABA in the bulbs was determined by monoclonal immunoassay analysis. KEY RESULTS: Dormancy was induced by WD and by ABA application in plants growing under non-inductive SD. Dormancy induction by WD was associated with increased levels of ABA. Bulbs were initially deeply dormant and their sprouting capacity was very low, as in plants in which dormancy was induced by LD. Dormancy was released after 2 months dry storage at 40 degrees C in all treatments. ABA levels were not affected by dormancy relaxation. CONCLUSIONS: Summer dormancy in P. bulbosa can be induced by two alternative and probably additive pathways: (1) photoperiodic induction by long-days, and (2) water deficit. Increased levels of endogenous ABA are involved in both pathways.  相似文献
