Our aim was to search for specific seed germinative strategies related to flooding escape in Setaria parviflora, a common species across the Americas. For this purpose, we investigated induction after floods, in relation to fluctuating temperature requirements for germination in seeds from mountain, floodplain and successional grasslands. A laboratory experiment was conducted in which seeds were imbibed or immersed in water at 5°C. Seeds were also buried in flood-prone and upland grasslands and exhumed during the flooding season. Additionally, seeds were buried in flooded or drained grassland mesocosms. Germination of exhumed seeds was assayed at 25°C or at 20°C/30°C in the dark or in the presence of red light pulses. After submergence or soil flooding, a high fraction (>32%) of seeds from the floodplain required fluctuating temperatures to germinate. In contrast, seeds from the mountains showed maximum differences in germination between fluctuating and constant temperature treatment only after imbibition (35%) or in non-flooded soil conditions (40%). The fluctuating temperature requirement was not clearly related to the foregoing conditions in the successional grassland seeds. Maximum germination could also be attained with red light pulses to seeds from mountain and successional grasslands. Results show that the fluctuating temperature requirement might help floodplain seeds to germinate after floods, indicating a unique feature of the dormancy of S. parviflora seeds from floodplains, which suggests an adaptive advantage aimed at postponing emergence during inundation periods. In contrast, the fluctuating temperature required for germination among seeds from mountain and successional grasslands show its importance for gap detection. 相似文献

We explored the relationships between Secchi disc depth and the abundance of fish species in very shallow, hypertrophic, turbid waters of Pampa Plain lakes, Argentine. We tested whether the abundance of any of the species present was associated with water transparency for lakes where water transparency, as measured by Secchi disc depth, ranged from 0.1 to 0.4 m. Overall, the abundance of five species (Cnesterodon decemmaculatus, Jenynsia multidentata, Corydoras paleatus, Pimelodella laticeps and Odontesthes bonariensis) seemed to be affected by this narrow gradient in water transparency. These findings represent an interesting result for turbid hypertrophic environments where narrow ranges in water transparency are traditionally neglected as important factors for fishes. We show, however, how water transparency patterns may be still important for some species in highly turbid waters with extremely narrow gradients in Secchi disc depth. Abstract Recolonization patterns of a tall‐tussock grassland differ between low‐frequency and high‐intensity fires. A series of laboratory and field experiments were performed on the seed bank and on seeds of the main colonizing species (Carduus acanthoides, Cirsium vulgare, Lotus glaber) to determine and compare the effects of fire frequency and fire intensity on their recolonization potential. Seed‐bank size of colonizing species did not show a significant variation with contrasting fire frequencies, so overall interval‐dependent effects do not seem to affect their propagule pool at the time of fire. However, frequency of fire modified the proportion of viable seeds and their dormancy state according to species. Accumulated emergence from experimentally buried soft‐seeds of Lotus was lower after high‐intensity fires (following wind direction) than after back‐fires (against wind direction), but no significant effects of fire‐front direction on seedling emergence were observed for hard‐seeds of Lotus nor Carduus and Cirsium. Seedling emergence from buried seeds of Cirsium was increased with doubling fuel loads, particularly from deepen soil layers, where Cirsium had most of their viable seeds after a low frequency of fire. Emergence from hard‐seeds of Lotus was less promoted than Cirsium by doubling fuel loads, and according to analysis of excavated seedlings, it was completely inhibited from upper soil layers of the seed bank. Integration of species‐specific and burial depth‐specific responses of Cirsium and Lotus seeds according to fuel load, vertical distribution of the seed banks, seed dormant states and mean emergence depths, resulted in expected emergence values which agree with their previously observed patterns of recolonization. Thus, event‐dependent mechanisms had a better predictive value on recolonization success of the studied species than the observed cumulative effects of fire history on their seed‐bank size. 相似文献

Water and surficial sediment samples of Lake Chascomús and its tributaries were analyzed in order to relate changes in diatom
community structure to chemical variables. Over the course of 13 months of sampling, the lake exhibited major changes in water
level (1.15–1.98 m average depth), total dissolved solids (821–1972 mg l−1), silica (0.098–8.22 mg l−1), and total algal biomass (21.4–145.9 μg Chl a l−1). However, despite these large fluctuations, the diatom species composition was relatively stable. The dominant species in
the water column was always Synedra berolinensis (68.9%–90.1% total frustules), with Fragilaria construens and F. brevistriata as subdominants. In the sediments the latter two species dominated the frustule counts. These results indicate an unusual
floristic stability of this eutrophic ecosystem, with persistent dominance by broadly tolerant, generalist species.

The pulmonate land snail, Rumina decollata, is a highly invasive gastropod adapted to arid conditions, and native from the Mediterranean area. It was recorded for the
first time in Argentina in 1988, in the northeastern Pampas of the Buenos Aires Province, a region characterized by a humid
mesothermal climate with no water deficit. In the present contribution, we report the finding of populations of this species
in the semiarid region of La Pampa and Mendoza provinces in central-western Argentina. The present findings extend the invasive
distributional range of R. decollata westwards through more than 1000 km from the site where it was detected in 1988. Although no damages to agricultural areas
have been reported to the moment in Argentina, the presence of R. decollata in semiarid areas warns us about its potential as an important plague in the future. 相似文献
