We analysed the response of two grass species, Danthonia montevidensis and Paspalum dilatatum to waterlogging, soil-nutrient enrichment and the combination of both factors. Waterlogging did not affect total biomass of D. montevidensis, but it slightly promoted growth of P. dilatatum. Most analysed variables showed no significant interaction between fertilization and waterlogging. Therefore, waterlogging does not produce a detrimental effect either in the growth of these species or in their response capacity to stimulating growth factors, such as fertilization.  相似文献

Natural flooding is one of the major factors affecting vegetation dynamics in many regions of the world. The Flooding Pampa Grasslands (Argentina) are frequently exposed to flooding events of diverse intensity and duration, some of which Leontodon taraxacoides , an exotic dicot. frequent in these grasslands, seems to survive. Its responses to four different water depths (0, 1, 7 and 13 cm) were studied. The results indicate that plants in conditions of total submergence (depth of 13 cm) did not survive. In less severe flood conditions, increases in the leaf insertion angle resulted in the maintenance of a large proportion of the total leaf area above the water. Differences in leaf length and a decrease in the width and the proportion of lobes per leaf were also found under partial submergence conditions (depth of 7 cm). Root and leaf aerenchyma, present in unflooded plants, showed a significant increase in flood conditions. In spite of the anatomical and morphological responses, total biomass and leaf area were severely affected by water depth. Control plants allocated more biomass to reproductive organs, while partly submerged plants allocated more to leaves and less to reproductive organs. Mature L. taraxacoides plants presented a wide range of plastic adjustment as a survival strategy in soil anaerobiosis, and appear to be able to survive short spring floods in a vegetative state; in contrast, they might not tolerate total submergence conditions imposed by more intense and long-lasting floods.  相似文献

Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi affect ecosystem processes improving plant tolerance in (hyper)arid/saline environments. However, there are no previous studies on the presence of AM fungi in the Atacama Desert (Northern Chile), the driest desert in the world. Here, we studied the root and rhizosphere in 111 samples of representative plants from three elevation gradients: (i) hyperarid desert (700–2000 m a.s.l.), (ii) pre-Puna (2000–3100 m a.s.l.) and (iii) Puna (3100–4500 m a.s.l.) elevation belts. Soil pH, electrical conductivity (EC), organic matter, cations and the AM colonization and fungal structures were determined. All plants showed colonization and fungal structures. Root colonization ranged from 3.5 to 87%, hyphae showed densities from 0.13 to 204 m g−1, and spore densities between 20 and 45,500 per 100 g of soil. The highest fungal structure abundances were found in Prosopis tamarugo, Baccharis scandens, Werneria pinnatifida, Deyeuxia curvula and Festuca deserticola rhizospheres. In general, EC and cations showed strong relationship with fungal structure abundance. Here, we reported for the first time the widespread presence of AM symbiosis in all the elevation belts of the Atacama Desert, constituting a first step to understand the ecological role that AM fungi play under extreme aridity and salinity conditions.  相似文献

The relationship between biodiversity and the stability of ecosystem functioning over time has been widely studied. The current global context has refloated this topic for biodiversity's role in buffering the effects of different disturbances. In general, the results of these studies show that ecosystem functioning is more stable over time in more diverse systems. However, these results are derived from empirical research on small-scale studies, where species and disturbances conditions are manipulated. In this work, we used climate and floristic information data obtained from surveys over an extended period on Flooding Pampa grasslands (Argentina) with a remotely sensed indicator of the stability of net primary productivity at a regional scale over a broad temporal range to evaluate the relationship between species diversity and the stability of ecosystem functioning under different water conditions. We found a close correlation between Normalized Difference Vegetation Index responses of natural grasslands and climate variability in the study area. Besides, grasslands with higher species richness and diversity showed greater stability in ecosystem functioning at different water conditions. The results obtained could be relevant in natural resource management for the close relationship between diversity–stability in a local and regional productive context characterized by a simplified landscape of space and time.  相似文献

This paper deals with the taphonomic analysis of the late Miocene bone assemblage from the Cerro Azul Formation at Telén (La Pampa Province, Argentina). The faunal assemblage was assigned to the Huayquerian mammal age (late Miocene). The fossiliferous section shows a homogeneous lithology, and is interpreted as a loess deposit with two similar and slightly developed palaeosols, classified as calcic vertisols. The studied sample comprises 5598 remains anatomically and taxonomically determined. They were collected from an area of about 48,000 m2, appearing randomly distributed through the section and with low density. Most remains are small- to very small-sized, disarticulated, and very fragmented. Different taphonomical histories are inferred for microvertebrates and macromammals. The microvertebrate assemblage is interpreted as the result of predator activities. After a brief period of pre-burial exposure, remains were dispersed from the original depositional area. On the other hand, a natural and gradual death process is envisaged for macromammals, followed by a long period of exposure to weathering and dispersal by physical agents. Remains of both groups, once buried, suffered the diagenetic processes of the host rock. Consequently, the fossil assemblage from Telén would represent a condensed assemblage corresponding to two distinct time spans, i.e., the accumulation of microvertebrates took place in a short time interval whereas that of macromammals occurred over a longer period, coincident with the development of both soils.  相似文献

The scarab beetle genus Pseudogeniates Ohaus (Scarabaeidae: Rutelinae: Rutelini) is endemic to Argentina. The genus includes three species: Pseudogeniates cordobaensis Soula, Pseudogeniates intermedius Ohaus, and Pseudogeniates richterianus Ohaus. We characterize the genus, provide a key to species, redescribe and diagnose each species, provide spatial and temporal distributions, and discuss distributions of the species in relation to eco-regions and areas of endemism in Argentina.  相似文献

The patches of Paspalum quadrifarium-dominated grasslands found atpresent could be remnants of the vegetation that defined the Pampas landscape inthe past. The mere presence of such physical structures should lead to systemsin which many other species are dependent upon both the autogenic creation ofsurface area for living space and the autogenic and allogenic modulation ofresources controlled by these structures. We carried out amensurative–comparative study in naturally occurring sites dominated byP. quadrifarium that occupy different positions within thelandscape in the Flooding Pampa. We found different species assemblages in thesestructurally homogeneous stands, related to the edaphic and topographicgradients. The comparison with sites from similar positions in the landscapewhere this native tussock-grass was absent showed that the dominance ofP. quadrifarium is a minor determinant of floristicdifferences, which are mainly controlled by abiotic factors. We assigned thesedominated grassland stands to previously delimited vegetation units for theFlooding Pampa grasslands and we compared them with the vegetation unitsassigned, in terms of composite properties of the community that may beindicators of ecosystem processes, such as biological invasions andproductivity. Our results show that this native tussock grass is associated withhigher floristic richness, higher representation of perennials and grasses andlower presence of alien plants. This homogeneous pattern of variation across thevegetation units would suggest that, despite the absence of dramatic changes incommunity composition, the dominance of this tussock grass plays an importantrole in structuring species diversity patterns.  相似文献

Temperate humid grasslands are known to be particularly vulnerable to invasion by alien plant species when grazed by domestic livestock. The Flooding Pampa grasslands in eastern Argentina represent a well-documented case of a regional flora that has been extensively modified by anthropogenic disturbances and massive invasions over recent centuries. Here, we synthesise evidence from region-wide vegetation surveys and long-term exclosure experiments in the Flooding Pampa to examine the response of exotic and native plant richness to environmental heterogeneity, and to evaluate grazing effects on species composition and diversity at landscape and local community scales. Total plant richness showed a unimodal distribution along a composite stress/fertility gradient ranging several plant community types. On average, more exotic species occurred in intermediate fertility habitats that also contained the highest richness of resident native plants. Exotic plant richness was thus positively correlated with native species richness across a broad range of flood-prone grasslands. The notion that native plant diversity decreases invasibility was supported only for a limited range of species-rich communities in habitats where soil salinity stress and flooding were unimportant. We found that grazing promoted exotic plant invasions and generally enhanced community richness, whereas it reduced the compositional and functional heterogeneity of vegetation at the landscape scale. Hence, grazing effects on plant heterogeneity were scale-dependent. In addition, our results show that environmental fluctuations and physical disturbances such as large floods in the pampas may constrain, rather than encourage, exotic species in grazed grasslands.  相似文献

Abstract. The first objective of this paper was to assess the effects of grazing on seedling establishment of two species whose relative abundance at the adult stage is affected by grazing in a contrasting fashion. Second, we evaluated the relative importance of seed versus safe-site availability in explaining the effect of grazing on seedling establishment. We monitored seedling establishment on a grazed area, on two areas which had not been grazed for two and seven years, and on plots which had been experimentally defoliated. The species compared were Dan-thonia montevidensis, a native perennial grass which dominates both grazed and ungrazed communities, and Leontodón taraxacoides, an invading exotic rosette species from the Compositae family. Continuous grazing enhanced seedling establishment of both species through its effect on the availability of safe sites. Seed availability accounted for only one, but very important, grazing effect: the lack of response by L. taraxacoides to the defoliation in the seven-year old exclosure. Its seed supply was depleted by exclusion of grazing and, consequently, its short-term regeneration capacity after disturbance was lost.  相似文献
