The United States and much of the world is struggling with what “education” and being “educated” mean. Daily media are replete with debates on issues ranging from gender and class rights to the ideological and practical purpose of education. Prominent among these debates are discussions about whether education should be geared toward vocational purposes and employability or toward the creation of engaged, informed, and intellectually aware citizens. In this article we problematize the role and limitations of current research on drama and theater in and as education. To do this, we first share a sampling of the current state of research in this arts area. We then articulate the role this diverse range of research methodologies and foci play in shaping national and global educational policy.  相似文献

A Canalco Model CF-3 Electrophoretic Filter/Concentrator (modified ter Bier) was used to concentrate Type 1 polio virus from water using ectro-osmotic and forced-flow electrophoretic principles. Using2 ectro-osmosis water can be removed at a rate of up to 0.8 ral/hr/cm membrane area. Under conditions of 12–14 V/cm (5–6 amps) and adjusted mping rates, 20 fold concentration, without virus loss, can be achieved. ring forced-flow electrophoresis, the virus, which is negatively charged an alkaline buffer, moves toward the positive pole. At 20 V/cm and th adjusted pumping rates, the best that could be achieved was a 3 fold ncentration of virus and a 10 fold dehydration. Virus spill-over at e cathode and/or virus adsorption at the anode accounted for the poor suits, but theoretically this can be overcome by adjustment of the V/cm upled with adjustment of the pumping rates. Voltage (30 V/cm) and rrent (6 amps) have no detrimental effects on viral stability. These chniques appear to be more rapid and gentle than other methods for ncentration of virus and could be scaled up for practical use.  相似文献

Zoo veterinarians and allied professionals have been contributing to conservation medicine (CM) and One Health (OH) activities for more than two decades. Although the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) considers conservation a key part of its mission, little published material exists about the extent of AZA work in CM/OH or the challenges and opportunities associated with these endeavors. To better understand the current scope of CM/OH in zoos, we surveyed 53 AZA‐accredited institutions from April through October of 2016. We obtained information on CM/OH infrastructure, support for expansion in this area, and strategies to overcome perceived obstacles hindering CM/OH from becoming a core AZA activity. Survey results revealed that while most zoos favor greater investment in CM/OH programs, awareness, and understanding of CM/OH across the broader zoo community and public is lacking. The majority of respondents stated that overcoming this challenge is paramount to attaining support for CM/OH initiatives. In spite of these obstacles, survey respondents highlighted many positive developments in CM/OH. We found that 84% of zoos surveyed are actively engaged in CM/OH activities, and 12% house formal CM/OH programs. Another 8% of respondents said their institutions were developing CM/OH programs. Perhaps most noteworthy, we found that zoo size did not have a significant bearing on the financial amount allocated toward an institution's CM/OH activities. This suggests that all zoos, regardless of size, can make meaningful contributions to the growing movement of CM/OH and help redefine the role of zoos within this movement.  相似文献

The concept of health has evolved markedly from a bio-medical, mechanistic model to include an interdisciplinary perspective where human, animal and ecosystem health are integrated. One Health, EcoHealth and Planetary Health are examples of approaches to health advocating collaboration and interdisciplinarity at multiple levels. In practice, successful integration has been challenging and in particular, understanding of the ecosystem component of health lags behind the human and animal components. Antimicrobial resistance is an important threat to human health, which develops, is maintained and transmitted at the human–animal–environment interface. While the human and livestock components of resistance are well understood, this is not the case for the ecosystem component. This gap in knowledge leads to a poor representation of the environmental dimension of antimicrobial resistance in key policy documents and in interdisciplinary work around this issue. We interviewed a group of leading researchers in public health and ecology to explore their perceptions on the integration of ecosystem and public health research in the context of antimicrobial resistance. Experts from both fields considered that research on antimicrobial resistance is only beginning to consider ecosystems. They highlighted various barriers that have contributed to limited integration, such as conceptual barriers, and a lack of knowledge translators as facilitators. Better interdisciplinary integration is needed to address the challenge of antimicrobial resistance. Improving the dialogues between the disciplines is a necessary first step in this process. Greater engagement of ecologists is needed to build a more complete understanding of the role of ecosystems in human health, and identify how human interactions with ecosystems can both contribute to, and restrict, the development of antimicrobial resistance.  相似文献

Reversible protein phosphorylation is a key mediator for intracellular signal transduction. Here we report an innovative method for accurate, site-specific protein phosphorylation degree determination by nanoLC-ESI-MS/MS. A stable isotope-labeled pair of peptide/phosphopeptide standards with volumetrically defined molar ratio is used as reference, providing an internal standard for both the analyte peptide and the phosphopeptide. For the preparation of one-source peptide/phosphopeptide standards, an aliquot of the labeled phosphopeptide standard is quantitatively dephosphorylated, yielding an equimolar solution of the peptide standard. Subsequently, the two solutions are mixed at a 1:1 or other volumetric ratio, which equals the molar ratio. This procedure assures a defined concentration ratio of both components that is independent from their absolute concentration. We demonstrate the applicability of the one-source peptide/phosphopeptide standard method by determining the phosphorylation degree of the signalling proteins STAT5A/B and STAT6.  相似文献

哈萨克斯坦位于欧亚大陆腹地, 地处丝绸之路经济带的重要位置。中国与哈萨克斯坦开展生物多样性保护合作, 有助于解决地区生态环境问题和推动“一带一路”倡议的顺利实施。目前国内尚缺乏对哈萨克斯坦生物多样性及其保护状况的了解。本文在文献的基础上通过定量和定性分析方法, 从地理环境特征、生物多样性状况、保护成效和需求等维度对哈萨克斯坦生物多样性及其保护的总体情况进行了分析。分析结果表明, 哈萨克斯坦的生物多样性丰富, 但也存在着较严重的丧失问题; 哈萨克斯坦政府重视生物多样性保护, 积极承担相关国际履约义务; 在保护管理方面实行多级管理体制, 并与社会经济发展需求相结合, 取得了一定成效。  相似文献

Three levels of hamadryas social structure—the one male unit (OMU), the band, and the troop—have been observed at all sites studied, but a fourth—the clan—has been observed at only one site, Erer-Gota, Ethiopia, during a longitudinal check of the dispersion of identified individuals. The clan is important since it appears to provide the basis for male philopatry, although comparative data is needed from other sites to confirm this. We studied a huge commensal group of hamadryas baboons (over 600 animals) in Saudi Arabia. We put ear tags on baboons between 1998 and 2004 and analyzed social structure, relying on the interactions of these tagged animals by focusing especially on their dispersal patterns from OMUs. OMU membership tended to be looser than that of the Ethiopian hamadryas. Females tended to shift between OMUs on an individual basis in our study group, whereas the collapse of an OMU was a major occasion of adult female transfer in Ethiopia. We found neither stable bands (a “band” in our study group was defined as a regional assemblage of OMUs) nor clans that lasted for several years. Some OMUs moved and transferred into neighboring areas over both the short and long term. Further, some post-adolescent males appeared to move out of the study area. The ratio of adult females in an OMU in our study group was larger than for any other documented study site, and this may be the reason for enhanced female transfer between OMUs. A large proportion of the adolescent females showed no clear membership to OMUs, and no “initial units” (commonly observed in Ethiopia) were discernible. The ease with which young males acquired adult females at the study site must have disrupted the formation of a clan, a “male-bonded society.”  相似文献

Graves’ disease is an autoimmune disorder of thyroid which is characterized by hyperthyroidism, diffuse goiter, ophthalmopathy. Due to the pathophysiological mechanism of the disease, the disease affects both thyroid lobes. Unilateral involvement of the thyroid gland in patients with Graves’ disease is a rare entity, which suggests a difference between the two thyroid lobes. Clarifying this phenomenon could be a line of research for a better understanding of the pathophysiology of Graves's disease. This entity must be known to the clinician in order to take it better and avoid misdiagnosis. Here we present two cases of Graves’ disease which had unilateral involvement of the thyroid gland and discuss the hypotheses explaining this observation.  相似文献

建立西尼罗病毒敏感、特异、快速的RT-PCR检测方法用于实验室诊断和流行病学监测。采用一步RT-PCR和套式PCR法对西尼罗病毒感染的乳鼠脑和细胞培养上清进行扩增,并对扩增产物进行序列测定。两种方法均可分别从两种组织中扩增出与预期大小相一致的片段,套式PCR法比一步RT-PCR法更为敏感,该扩增片段与西尼罗病毒埃及Eg101株相应序列的同源性为99%。  相似文献
