The present study investigated whether deprivation of nursing or of any physical interaction with the lamb impairs the onset of maternal responsiveness and the establishment of selectivity in primiparous and multiparous ewes. Just after parturition, ewes could interact freely with their lamb, or could only lick their lamb but not nurse them, or could neither lick nor nurse them for the first 4 h. At 4 h, mothers were successively observed for 3 min with an alien lamb and then with their own lamb. Only 5/14 primiparous mothers accepted their own lamb following deprivation of all physical contact whereas all multiparous mothers did so (19/19). Also, deprivation of all physical contact resulted in a significantly higher proportion of multiparous mothers accepting an alien lamb (6/18) than following deprivation of nursing only (0/19) indicating an impairment in selectivity. Finally, there was no indication that preventing only nursing led to a deficit either in maternal responsiveness or selectivity, neither in primiparous nor in multiparous ewes. These findings underline the importance of perception of olfactory cues from amniotic fluids through licking and/or physical contact and interacting with the lamb for the development of maternal responsiveness and selectivity.  相似文献

We investigated the anatomical organization of glomeruli in the antennal lobes (ALs) of male silkmoths. We reconstructed 10 different ALs and established an identification procedure for individual glomeruli by using size, shape, and position relative to anatomical landmarks. Quantitative analysis of these morphological characteristics supported the validity of our identification strategy. The glomerular organization of the ALs was roughly conserved between different ALs. However, we found individual variations that were reproducibly observed. The combination of a digital atlas with other experimental techniques, such as electrophysiology, optical imaging, and genetics, should facilitate a more in-depth analysis of sensory information processing in silkmoth ALs. Olfactory sensitivity to bile salts is wide-spread in teleosts; however, which bile salts are released in sufficient quantities to be detected is unclear. The current study identified bile salts in the intestinal and bile fluids of Solea senegalensis by mass spectrometry–liquid chromatography and assessed their olfactory potency by the electro-olfactogram. The main bile salts identified in the bile were taurocholic acid (342 mM) and taurolithocholic acid (271 mM) plus a third, unidentified, bile salt of 532.3 Da. These three were also present in the intestinal fluid (taurocholic acid, 4.13 mM; taurolithocholic acid, 0.4 mM). In sole-conditioned water, only taurocholic acid (0.31 μM) was released in sufficient quantities to be measured (release rate: 24 nmol kg−1 min−1). Sole had high olfactory sensitivity to taurocholic acid but not to taurolithocholic acid. Furthermore, olfactory sensitivity was higher in the upper (right) olfactory epithelium than the lower (left). These two bile acids contribute about 40% of the olfactory potency of intestinal fluid and account for the difference in potency at the two epithelia. Taurocholic acid (but not taurolithocholic acid), and possibly other types of bile acid not tested, could be used as chemical signals and the upper olfactory epithelium is specialised for their detection.  相似文献

Herbivores provide tsetse flies with a blood meal, and both wild and domesticated ruminants dominate as hosts. As volatile metabolites from the rumen are regularly eructed with rumen gas, these products could serve tsetse flies during host searching. To test this, we first established that the odour of rumen fluid is attractive to hungry Glossina pallidipes in a wind tunnel. We then made antennogram recordings from three tsetse species (G. pallidipes morsitans group, G. fuscipes palpalis group and G. brevipalpis fusca group) coupled to gas chromatographic analysis of rumen fluid odour and of its acidic, mildly acidic and neutral fractions. This shows tsetse flies can detect terpenes, ketones, carboxylic acids, aliphatic aldehydes, sulphides, phenols and indoles from this biological substrate. A mixture of carboxylic acids at a ratio similar to that present in rumen fluid induced behavioural responses from G. pallidipes in the wind tunnel that were moderately better than the solvent control. The similarities in the sensory responses of the tsetse fly species to metabolites from ruminants demonstrated in this study testify to a contribution of habitat exploitation by these vertebrates in the Africa-wide distribution of tsetse.  相似文献

An important prediction from game theory is that the value of a resource influences the level to which conflict escalates. Here we use jumping spiders (Salticidae) to consider this prediction in the context of species adopting different mating systems (‘female mate-choice’ and ‘mutual mate-choice’). Our experiments are designed for determining whether the odour of conspecific females, more than the odour of heterospecific females, primes males to escalate conflict with a potential same-sex rival and also whether the odour of conspecific males, more than the odour of heterospecific males, primes females to escalate conflict with a potential same-sex rival. Four species were studied: Evarcha culicivora, a species in which mutual mate-choice is pronounced, and Portia fimbriata, Portia africana, and Jacksonoides queenslandicus, more conventional salticids in which female mate-choice and male–male competition appear to be dominant. Our hypothesis is that, for all four species, there is strong competition between males for access to females and that, for E. culicivora, but not for the other three species, there is also strong competition between females for access to males. Our findings are consistent with this hypothesis, as we show that, although the odour of conspecific females primes escalation of vision-based male–male conflict for all four species, E. culicivora is the only species for which there is evidence of odour from conspecific males priming the escalation of female–female conflict.  相似文献

Apis mellifera (Amel) relies on its olfactory system to detect and identify new-sources of floral food. The Odorant-Binding Proteins (OBPs) are the first proteins involved in odorant recognition and interaction, before activation of the olfactory receptors. The Amel genome possess a set of 21 OBPs, much fewer compared to the 60-70 OBPs found in Diptera genomes. We have undertaken a structural proteomics study of Amel OBPs, alone or in complex with odorant or model compounds. We report here the first 3D structure of a member of the C-minus class OBPs, AmelOBP14, characterized by only two disulfide bridges of the three typical of classical OBPs. We show that AmelOBP14 possesses a core of 6 α-helices comparable to that of classical OBPs, and an extra exposed C-terminal helix. Its binding site is located within this core and is completely closed. Fluorescent experiments using 1-NPN displacement demonstrate that AmelOBP14 is able to bind several compounds with sub micromolar dissociation constants, among which citralva and eugenol exhibit the highest affinities. We have determined the structures of AmelOBP14 in complex with 1-NPN, eugenol and citralva, explaining their strong binding. Finally, by introducing a double cysteine mutant at positions 44 and 97, we show that a third disulfide bridge was formed in the same position as in classical OBPs without disturbing the fold of AmelOBP14.  相似文献

Monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) were generated to six recombinant proteins (odorant-binding proteins; OBPs) of Manduca sexta. The specificity of each MAb was demonstrated by labeling six immunoblots, each of which contained samples of all six recombinant OBPs. The expression patterns of the six OBPs could be grouped into three classes: (1) one (GOBP1) was expressed in sensilla located throughout each annulus; (2) two (ABPX and ABP2) were expressed in the long sensilla trichoidea bordering a zone that was arranged as an arch on the periphery of each annulus; (3) three (PBP2, PBP3, and GOBP2) were expressed in shorter sensilla occupying a wedge-shaped mid-annular zone of each annulus. In female antennae, sensilla expressing these OBPs were intermixed, and the distinct zonation observed in the male antenna was absent. In males, PBP2 was co-expressed in exactly the same cells of the mid-annular zone as those expressing PBP3 and most of the same cells expressing GOBP2, although its expression overlapped with no or only a few sensilla expressing OBPs of class 1 (GOBP1) or class 2 (ABPX, ABP2). This overlap of expression or lack of overlap between PBP2 and the other OBPs for male antennae was mirrored in female antennae. In view of the restricted spatial expression of OBPs within an annulus and the diversity of possible dimeric combinations of OBPs that arises from the co-expression of multiple OBPs in a given sensillum, OBPs could contribute to the specificity of the olfactory responses of insects. This research was supported by grants from the National Science Foundation (IBN-9604095) and the University of Illinois Critical Research Initiatives  相似文献

When the dimensionality of a neural circuit is substantially larger than the dimensionality of the variable it encodes, many different degenerate network states can produce the same output. In this review I will discuss three different neural systems that are linked by this theme. The pyloric network of the lobster, the song control system of the zebra finch, and the odor encoding system of the locust, while different in design, all contain degeneracies between their internal parameters and the outputs they encode. Indeed, although the dynamics of song generation and odor identification are quite different, computationally, odor recognition can be thought of as running the song generation circuitry backwards. In both of these systems, degeneracy plays a vital role in mapping a sparse neural representation devoid of correlations onto external stimuli (odors or song structure) that are strongly correlated. I argue that degeneracy between input and output states is an inherent feature of many neural systems, which can be exploited as a fault-tolerant method of reliably learning, generating, and discriminating closely related patterns.  相似文献

Interneurons with dendritic branches in the antennal lobe of the male turnip moth, Agrotis segetum (Schiff., Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), were investigated with intracellular recording and staining methods. Seventeen projection neurons that transmit information from the antennal lobe to higher centers in the brain displayed dendritic arbors in the male specific macroglomerular complex (MGC) and responded to chemical components of the female sex pheromone used in species-specific sexual communication. Most of the projection neurons responded to several of the pheromone components tested, and a precise correlation between the location of the dendritic arborization and the physiological response could not be demonstrated. One MGC-projection neuron fit the definition of blend specialist. It did not respond to the individual components of the behaviorally active pheromone blend, but showed a strong response to the components when combined in the species-specific blend. Some of the projection neurons also showed clear responses to phenylacetaldehyde, a flower-produced compound and/or to (E)-2-hexenal, a common green-leaf volatile. In eight neurons, the axonal projection could be followed to the calyces of the mushroom body, and subsequently to the inferior lateral protocerebrum.Four local interneurons were characterized both morphologically and physiologically. Each neuron arborized extensively throughout the antennal lobe, and each responded to one or several of the pheromone compounds, and/or to one or both of the plant-produced compounds. One of the local interneurons responded exclusively to the pheromone blend, but not to the individual components.Abbreviations AL antennal lobe - AN antennal nerve - CB cell body - E2H (E)-2-hexenal - IACT inner antennocerebral tract - ILPR inferior lateral protocerebrum - LH lateral horn of the protocerebrum - LN local interneuron - MB mushroom body - MGC macroglomerular complex - OACT outer antennocerebral tract - PAA phenylacetaldehyde - PN projection interneuron - RN receptor neuron - Z5-10:OAc (Z)-5-decenyl acetate - Z5-10:OH (Z)-5-decenol - Z5-12:OAc (Z)-5-dodecenyl acetate - Z7-12:OAc (Z)-7-dodecenyl acetate - Z9-14:OAc (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate  相似文献
