Abstract

World fish resources, fishing methods, and processing operations in the seafood industry are described. The fishery situation in developing countries (LDCs) is discussed, with particular reference to artisanal and other local fisheries, and examples are cited to illustrate the structure of the industry. Technology transfer from developed countries to LDCs is discussed and recommendations are presented for future technology transfer programs. It is concluded that an integrated complex of small projects with defined, attainable objectives and immediate impact on income and food supply of the LDC populations is likely to be more successful than large‐scale programs with little immediate payoff. A case study of fisheries in two developing countries, Thailand and Peru, and extensive tabulation of statistical data on catches, value of catch, and unit value of fish species groups for selected countries, with a discussion of the significance of the data, are presented in an appendix.  相似文献

Cortical evoked potentials resulting from stimulation of the dorsal nerve of the penis (DNP) provide a unique opportunity to document the cortical localization of sexual sensory representation in man. The DNP supplies sensory axons to the major portion of the human phallus, including the penile shaft and glans. Animal and human studies indicate that this nerve plays a crucial role in erection and ejaculation. Direct cortical evoked responses to DNP electrical stimulation were recorded in patients undergoing preoperative evaluation for resection of epileptic foci. These studies provided evidence that the primary sensory cortex contains a large area of cortex devoted to the afferent fibers of the DNP and that the sensory field is in a different location than previously described. The location and distribution of this response indicated the need for revision of the traditional concept of the sensory cortical homunculus.  相似文献

The yeasts, Cryptococcus laurentii BSR-Y22 or Sporobolomyces roseus FS-43-238, but not Saccharomyces cerevisiae BY-1, reduced gray mold ( Botrytis cinerea ) when applied to wounds of apples (cv. Golden Delicious) which were stored at 22IC for 7 days or 3IC for up to 2 months. The role of competition for sugars by these yeasts as a mechanism of antagonism was investigated at 22IC. Populations of C. laurentii and S. roseus in wounds were 6-9 times greater than those of S. cerevisiae from 1 to 7 days following inoculation. Yeasts in wounds utilized more 14C-labelled fructose, glucose or sucrose than conidia of B. cinerea during 48 h, but yeasts did not differ in their utilization of sugars. Utilization of 14C-sugars by yeasts in vitro was greater at most sampling times for conidia; the uptake after 48 h was always greater for yeasts and the addition of nitrogen did not alter this result. The utilization of 14C-sugars by S. roseus in vitro was greater than that in the other yeasts. The uptake and utilization of 14C-fructose by C. laurentii or S. roseus was greater than that of S. cerevisiae , but the utilization of glucose or sucrose by C. laurentii and S. cerevisiae was similar and the uptake of these sugars by these yeasts did not differ. Yeasts mixed with conidia in sterile, dilute solutions of fructose, glucose or sucrose, or in dilute apple juice inhibited conidial germination compared with no-yeast controls; S. cerevisiae was less effective than C. laurentii or S. roseus . Only yeasts rapidly depleted sugars from juice or sugar solutions. Yeasts did not alter the pH or oxygen content of dilute juice to the detriment of conidial germination. These results strongly suggest that competition for sugars by yeasts played a role in the biocontrol of gray mold, but that some other factor(s) most likely contributed to differences in efficacy between the yeasts.  相似文献

The inhibitory effect of gallic acid (3,4,5-trihydroxybenzoic acid), and its ester derivatives methyl, propyl, octyl and lauryl has been tested on the tyrosine kinase activity of affinity purified c-Src from human platelets, using the artificial substrate Poly (Glu.Na, Tyr) 4:1. When tested as inhibitor of the autophosphorylation of the enzyme and the phosphorylation of the protein tyrosine phosphatase SHP-1 by c-Src, lauryl gallate was found to be a more potent inhibitor than other widely used protein tyrosine kinase (PTK) inhibitors such as genistein and herbimycin A. However, lauryl gallate did not inhibit the activity of the serine threonine kinases protein kinase A (PKA) and casein kinase II (CKII) from rat brain.  相似文献

Antioxidant and detoxifying fish enzymes as biomarkers of river pollution   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
The activity of several antioxidant and detoxifying enzymes, superoxide dismutase SOD , GSH peroxidase GSHPx , GSSG reductase GSR and GSH S transferase GST , the contents of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances TBARS , and the SOD and GST isoenzyme patterns were studied in the livers of chubs Leuciscus cephalus from reference river areas and polluted urban sites. Livers of polluted fish contained higher concentrations of transition metals, especially copper and iron. Total GSHPx activity was 1.8 fold higher in the polluted fish than in reference animals, while the SOD and GSR activities and the TBARS content were not significantly changed. Three new SOD isoforms pI 4.45, 5.1, 5.2 and a higher intensity of the band pI 4.2 were observed after isoelectrofocusing of polluted fish extracts. Total GST activity was higher in fish from polluted areas. The GST isoenzyme pattern was studied using subunit specific substrates DCNB, EPNP, EA, NPB, NBC and by Western blot using antibodies specific to rat GST subunits 1, 8 Alpha class , 3 Mu class and 7 Pi class . Reference and polluted fish lacked cross reactivity towards Alpha class GSTs. Reference fish displayed weaker cross reactivity towards CST 7 and 2.3 fold lower activity with EA, while higher cross reaction with GST 3 was observed in polluted fish.  相似文献

This contribution examines and points out the inadequacy of the provisions of Part III of the 1982 Law of the Sea (LOS) Convention to combat marine pollution in straits used for international navigation without infringing the right to transit passage of all user states. It stresses that it is the environmental obligation of all user and strait states to protect the marine environment of straits used for international navigation. To this end, this paper proposes that Part III of the 1982 LOS Convention be reconsidered and a "Guarantee of Freedom of Navigation--Environmental Impact Statement" be adopted by user and strait states.  相似文献

We present simulation results for the volume expansivity, isothermal compressibility, isobaric heat capacity, Joule-Thomson coefficient and speed of sound for carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) in the supercritical region, using the fluctuation method based on Monte Carlo simulations in the isothermal-isobaric ensemble. We model CO 2 as a quadrupolar two-center Lennard-Jones fluid with potential parameters reported in the literature, derived from vapor-liquid equilibria (VLE) of CO 2 . We compare simulation results with an equation of state (EOS) for the two-center Lennard-Jones plus point quadrupole (2CLJQ) fluid and with a multiparametric EOS adjusted to represent CO 2 experimental data. It is concluded that the VLE-based parameters used to model CO 2 as a quadrupolar two-center Lennard-Jones fluid (both simulations and EOS) can be used with confidence for the prediction of thermodynamic properties, including those of industrial interest such as the speed of sound or Joule-Thomson coefficient, for CO 2 in the supercritical region, except in the extended critical region.  相似文献

From 1994 to 1997 investigations have been carried out on fields of the "Ökohof Seeben" in Halle (Saale), refering to long-term effects of ecological agriculture on fauna, flora and soil. For the sampling of the epigeic fauna, pitfall traps were used. The purpose was to examine the effect of the changes in management on spiders for example. The influence of field size, edge-structures and different crops on species- and individual-numbers was studied. The question was, whether ecological agriculture results in an increasing biodiversity overviewed over years. In 4 years, on 6 fields, 190 species of spiders (82,202 adults spiders) could be proved, among them 32 species endangered in Sachsen-Anhalt and 28 species endangered according to the Red-Data-Books of Germany. The species numbers in the edge-biotops were nearly twice the numbers in the fields. The activity density of pioneer species (for example Oedothorax apicatus ) decreased rapidly on all fields. As a whole species numbers, and also the number of seldom species, were higher on the small fields than on the large fields lying in a poor structured environment. On the large fields some species, especially some Gnaphosidae and Lycosidae were missing in the first two years, but could be proved in the later years. Increasing numbers of species bigger in size and also more balanced dominance structures could be observed in the later years of investigation. In the fields the Linyphiidae species O. apicatus, E. atra, E. dentipalpis, M. rurestris, L. tenuis, P. microphthalmum, A. humilis and the Lycosidae P. agrestis and P. prativaga were dominant. Other species, like D. concolor, B. gracilis, H. signifer, P. juncea, T. ruricola, D. pusillus, X. kochi, O. claveata, P. degeeri, P. palustris, R. lividus prefered the adjacent boundaries, but were represented in the field as well. Several species, such as A. cuneata, A. pulverulenta, T. terricola, X. miniata, X. nemoralis, A. albimana, P. mirabilis, Ch. campestre, X. acerbus, Z. spinimana, P. festivus, D. praeficus and D. lutetianus could be proved only in the adjacent boundaries. Altogether positive effects on the dominance structure of spiders could be shown. An increasing biodiversity may be expected.  相似文献

The incidence of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) has risen exponentially worldwide over the past decade. A growing body of research indicates that AD is linked to diabetes mellitus (DM) and suggests that impaired insulin signaling acts as a crucial risk factor in determining the progression of this devastating disease. Many studies suggest people with diabetes, especially type 2 diabetes, are at higher risk of eventually developing Alzheimer's dementia or other dementias. Despite nationwide efforts to increase awareness, the prevalence of Diabetes Mellitus (DM) has risen significantly in the Middle East and North African (MENA) region which might be due to rapid urbanization, lifestyle changes, lack of physical activity and rise in obesity. Growing body of evidence indicates that DM and AD are linked because both conditions involve impaired glucose homeostasis and altered brain function. Current theories and hypothesis clearly implicate that defective insulin signaling in the brain contributes to synaptic dysfunction and cognitive deficits in AD. In the periphery, low-grade chronic inflammation leads to insulin resistance followed by tissue deterioration. Thus insulin resistance acts as a bridge between DM and AD. There is pressing need to understand on how DM increases the risk of AD as well as the underlying mechanisms, due to the projected increase in age related disorders. Here we aim to review the incidence of AD and DM in the Middle East and the possible link between insulin signaling and ApoE carrier status on Aβ aggregation, tau hyperphosphorylation, inflammation, oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction in AD. We also critically reviewed mutation studies in Arab population which might influence DM induced AD. In addition, recent clinical trials and animal studies conducted to evaluate the efficiency of anti-diabetic drugs have been reviewed.  相似文献

Chronic liver disease is initially occult, has multiple aetiologies, involves complex diagnostic questions, and requires follow-up because progression is likely. Blood tests and biopsies are generally used, but have disadvantages. We have developed a new test for liver disease based on abnormal concentrations of metabolic products detected in exhaled breath. This test can be used, in conjunction with other clinically accepted diagnostic protocols, to detect and classify chronic liver diseases. Samples of breath collected from spontaneously breathing human subjects (86 patients presenting with 13 liver diseases and 109 subjects with normal liver function) were concentrated cryogenically and analysed by wide-bore capillary gas chromatography using various detectors. The concentrations of various molecules in exhaled breath were examined for potential use as biomarkers of liver function. Subjects with chronic liver diseases could be differentiated from those with normal liver function by comparing levels of breath carbonyl sulphide, carbon disulphide and isoprene; these differences were confirmed and correlated by comparing the levels with standard clinical blood markers of liver damage. The presence of chronic liver failure can thus be detected with sensitivity and specificity by quantifying sulphur-containing compounds arising from the abnormal metabolism associated with liver disease. The breath test we have developed appears to distinguish between hepatocellular and biliary tract aetiologies, and allows staging for severity. This approach may provide the clinician with a simple, non-invasive technique for use in the screening of large populations and follow-up for patients with chronic liver disease.  相似文献
