The present study was carried out to determine whether the presence of photostimulated sedated male goats could stimulate the LH preovulatory surge and ovulation in seasonal anestrous goats. Sexually experienced male goats were treated with artificial long days (16 hours light per day) from 1 November to 15 January to stimulate their sexual activity in March and April, corresponding to the natural sexual rest. A female group of goats (n = 20) was exposed to non-sedated males who displayed an intense sexual behavior and provided strong odor (non-sedated group). Another female group of goats (n = 20) was exposed to the photo-stimulated male goats, but these males were sedated with Xylazine 2% to prevent the expression of sexual behavior (sedated group). The sedated males also provided a strong odor. Females of both groups had full physical and visual contact with non-sedated or sedated males. In both groups, the males remained with females during 4 days. The LH preovulatory surge of 10 female goats per group was measured by determination of LH plasma concentrations in samples taken every 3 hours. In addition, in all goats, (n = 20 by group), ovulation was determined by measuring plasma concentrations of progesterone. The proportion of female goats showing a preovulatory LH surge was higher in goats exposed to non-sedated (10/10) than in those exposed to sedated bucks (0/10; P < 0.0001). Similarly, most of does in contact with non-sedated males ovulated (19/20), but none of those in contact with sedated males did so (0/20; P < 0.0001). We conclude that the expression of an intense sexual behavior by male goats is necessary to induce LH preovulatory surge and ovulation in seasonally anovulatory goats.  相似文献

We asked whether odor discrimination abilities are sexually dimorphic in mice and, if so, whether the perinatal actions of estradiol contribute to these sex differences. The ability to discriminate different types of urinary odors was compared in male and female wild-type (WT) subjects and in mice with a homozygous-null mutation of the estrogen synthetic enzyme, aromatase (aromatase knockout; ArKO). Olfactory discrimination was assessed in WT and ArKO male and female mice after they were gonadectomized in adulthood and subsequently treated with estradiol benzoate. A liquid olfactometer was used to assess food-motivated olfactory discrimination capacity. All animals eventually learned to distinguish between urinary odors collected from gonadally intact males and estrous females; however, WT males as well as ArKO mice of both sexes learned this discrimination significantly more rapidly than WT females. Similar group differences were obtained when mice discriminated between urinary odors collected from gonadally intact vs. castrated males or between two non-social odorants, amyl and butyl acetate. When subjects had to discriminate volatile urinary odors from ovariectomized female mice treated with estradiol sequenced with progesterone versus estradiol alone, ArKO females quickly acquired the task whereas WT males and females as well as ArKO males failed to do so. These results demonstrated a strong sex dimorphism in olfactory discrimination ability, with WT males performing better than females. Furthermore, female ArKO mice showed an enhanced ability to discriminate very similar urinary odorants, perhaps due to an increased sensitivity of the main olfactory nervous system to adult estradiol treatment as a result of perinatal estrogen deprivation.  相似文献

A pilot-scale active aeration reactor was studied for composting food wastes in an open-top container aerated with negative pressure by vacuum. A biological filter bed was used to remove NH(3) from the emission. In addition to monitoring system parameters, the compost stability and fertilizer content were also examined to ensure product quality. The compost temperature rose to above 65 degrees C the first day and maintained at the high temperature fermentation level for 30 days. The pH decreased from the initial 5.2 to 4.3 on the first day and then rose slowly to 7.4 on the 60th day. After 60 days, the C/N ratio dropped from 32 to below 20. The final compost contains 1.6% nitrogen, 0.6% phosphate, and 1.4% potassium with total coliforms below 3 MPN/100mL. Using the biological filter to remove NH3, the emission contains less than 1 ppm of NH3. This system proves to be effective and environmental friendly.  相似文献

A recent study showed that the stingless bee Melipona quadrifasciata could learn to discriminate odors in a classical conditioning of proboscis extension response (PER). Here we used this protocol to investigate the ability of these bees to use olfactory information obtained within the colony in an experimental context: the PER paradigm. We compared their success in solving a classical differential conditioning depending on the previous olfactory experiences received inside the nest. We found that M. quadrifasciata bees are capable of transferring the food-odor information acquired in the colony to a differential conditioning in the PER paradigm. Bees attained higher discrimination levels when they had previously encountered the rewarded odor associated to food inside the hive. The increase in the discrimination levels, however, was in some cases unspecific to the odor used indicating a certain degree of generalization. The influence of the food scent offered at a field feeder 24 h before the classical conditioning could also be seen in the discrimination attained by the foragers in the PER setup, detecting the presence of long-term memory. Moreover, the improved performance of recruited bees in the PER paradigm suggests the occurrence of social learning of nectar scents inside the stingless bees’ hives.  相似文献

通过对近40 年来啮齿动物嗅觉通讯的研究综述, 主要介绍嗅觉信号的来源、组成及其对啮齿动物行为生理所产生的作用。啮齿动物嗅觉通讯的信号来源主要是粪便、尿液和特化皮肤腺等, 对这些化学信号的成分分析主要集中在各种信息素(Pheromone) 的结构、来源及其引起的行为反应。目前, 在对啮齿动物嗅觉通讯神经通路的研究中, 对主嗅觉系统和犁鼻器系统在动物嗅觉通讯中的作用仍将是人们研究的重点; 而通过信息素作用所产生的各种行为反应的神经内分泌机制也是动物嗅觉通讯领域研究的热点之一。研究气味信号对动物行为和生理等方面所产生的作用, 将有助于揭示啮齿动物嗅觉通讯在其社会行为中的重要作用。  相似文献

This study aimed to remove complex odorous gas produced from composting using a biotrickling filter and to observe the temporal and special distributions of bacteria, fungi, and actinomycetes. The removal efficiencies of the total volatile organic compounds (TVOC) were 26.1% and 81.5% before and after inoculation of volatile organic compounds (VOC)-degrading microbes, respectively. Especially trimethylamine was 100% degraded. In the first and second composting period, the odor reduction efficiencies showed average values of 86.2% and 94.5%, respectively. The total average of the bacteria in the biofilm was 2.06 × 109 CFU/g TS, which was 22.2% higher than that of the control (the culture of microbes prior to the inoculation of VOC-degrading microbes). The bacteria may have played a predominant role in odor removal. The total average of the fungi in the biofilm was 9.64 × 106 CFU/g TS, which was only 6.40% of the control. The total average of the actinomycetes in the biofilm was 5.10 × 105 CFU/g TS, which was 5.63 times higher than that of the control. Findings from this study showed that usage of a biotrickling filter is a promising process for the treatment of complex odorous gas.  相似文献

Nitric oxide is emerging as an important modulator of many physiological processes including olfaction, yet the function of this gas in the processing of olfactory information remains poorly understood. In the antennal lobe of the moth, Manduca sexta, nitric oxide is produced in response to odor stimulation, and many interneurons express soluble guanylyl cyclase, a well-characterized nitric oxide target. We used intracellular recording and staining coupled with pharmacological manipulation of nitric oxide and soluble guanylyl cyclase to test the hypothesis that nitric oxide modulates odor responsiveness in olfactory interneurons through soluble guanylyl cyclase-dependent pathways. Nitric oxide synthase inhibition resulted in pronounced effects on the resting level of firing and the responses to odor stimulation in most interneurons. Effects ranged from bursting to strong attenuation of activity and were often accompanied by membrane depolarization coupled with a change in input resistance. Blocking nitric oxide activation of soluble guanylyl cyclase signaling mimicked the effects of nitric oxide synthase inhibitors in a subset of olfactory neurons, while other cells were differentially affected by this treatment. Together, these results suggest that nitric oxide is required for proper olfactory function, and likely acts through soluble guanylyl cyclase-dependent and -independent mechanisms in different subsets of neurons.  相似文献

The olfactory system is faced with a particular problem – the high dimensionality and inherent unpredictability of the chemical world. Most natural odorants encountered in everyday life are complex mixtures of many different volatiles. This means that from the outset the olfactory system has to contend with a great and often unpredictable diversity of molecules, making it difficult for stable primary features of the chemical world to be mapped onto the sensory surface. One solution to such unpredictability is provided by learning. Learning confers flexibility, enabling individuals of a given species to acquire and make use of the most appropriate information in a particular environment. Two examples of this are presented: learning of maternal odors in neonatal rabbits, including evidence that the sensory surface itself may be influenced by environmental conditions so as to enhance sensitivity to molecules of particular ecological relevance, and cross-cultural human studies suggesting that experience with everyday odors influences not only the way these are evaluated, but also their perceived intensity. It is concluded that an adequate understanding of odor coding and olfactory function will not be possible without taking such experience-dependent factors into account. Accepted: 11 May 1999  相似文献

Blue crabs are cannibalistic, and therefore the scent of injured conspecifics represents both a potential food cue, as well as an indicator of predation risk. We examined the response of blue crabs to conspecific odor alone, as well as in mixtures of attractive cues to determine how animals evaluate and respond to this odor. We explicitly manipulated risk-sensitivity based on either animal size (an indicator of susceptibility to predation) or hunger state (susceptibility to starvation) as ways to evaluate theories of risk-allocation, which suggest that decreases in predation risk, or increases in the risk of starvation, ought to result in diminished responses to sensory cues that signal predator presence or activity. Large and small blue crabs were challenged to locate the source of odor plumes consisting of the scent of injured conspecifics (risk cue), attractive food odors (attractive cue), or their mixture (conflicting cue). Neither large nor small blue crabs tracked aversive cues, but large blue crabs consistently tracked conflicting treatments to their source. Responses to conflicting and aversive treatments also involved diminished movement and reduced tracking speed relative to behaviors displayed in attractive plumes. Thus, even cannibalistic crabs seem to respond more prevalently to the apparent predation risk then to food reward, and risk-sensitive behaviors have a likely cost in terms of reduced food intake. Starved animals were more likely than unstarved animals to track conflicting plumes. Both the ontogenic shift and the response of starved animals support the notion that the cost of risk-aversive behaviors results in this strategy being allocated in proportion to the degree of potential risk. Since risk-aversive responses to chemical cues can produce strong effects in communities, the size-dependent nature of these responses in blue crabs may introduce considerable complexity in interactions between blue crabs, their predators, and their prey.  相似文献
