The molar growth yield (Y
m) of Bacteroides amylophilus strain WP91 on maltose was 68±2 g/mol when determined from batch cultures at the peaks of maximal growth. Continued incubation led to considerable cell lysis. When calculated from batch cultures in exponential phase (specific growth rate, =0.57 h-1) Y

A study of diurnal variation over a 48 hour period was undertaken in July 1973 to ascertain the extent and timing of some major chemical, physical and biological variables in Loch Lomond. The phytoplankton population was dominated by the diatom Tabellaria fenestrata, with a maximum abundance between 04.00 and 06.00 h in surface waters on both days. A distinct diurnal variation in cell numbers was also recorded. Chlorophyll a values also showed a regular pattern of variation with a single peak between 10.00 and 14.00 h each day. Some chemical changes appeared to be a direct consequence of phytoplankton multiplication. Nitrate-nitrogen showed a decrease in concentration coinciding with the period of cell multiplication, whereas dissolved silica concentrations only fell on the completion of this process. Other common diatoms displayed less distinct patterns of variation although Fragilaria crotonensis attained its maximum abundance in surface waters. Considerable variation was recorded in the number of organisms and chlorophyll a levels at 25 cm intervals in the upper metre of the water column, with large variations in standing-crop and chemical parameters in the space of one hour. Diurnal oscillations in the position of the thermocline were recorded, with the thermal discontinuity being at its greatest depth in the early hours of the morning. The hypolimnion and thermocline regions clearly acted as a source of nutrient supply to the epilimnion. Nine out of a total of 20 pathogenic ice-nucleation-active bacteria, with different levels of inducible INA, were tested and found positive for their ability to synthesize quorum-sensing (QS) signals. The bacteria were isolated from willow plants and belonged to the genera Bacillus, Erwinia, Pseudomonas and Sphingomonas. As reporter bacteria, to detect the homoserine lactone (HSL) autoinducer, Agrobacterium tumefaciens, Chromobacterium violaceum, Pseudomonas aeroginosa, Aeromonas hydrophila and Vibrio fischeri strains were used. We thus provide evidence that pathogenic ice-nucleation bacteria with inducible INA produce QS signals that in other bacteria have been shown to be in the control of genes of importance for pathogenicity. 相似文献

Remote sensing can be the most effective means of scaling up grassland aboveground biomass (AGB) from the sample scale to the regional scale. Among the remote-sensing approaches, statistical models based on the vegetation index (VI) are frequently used to retrieve grassland AGB because of their simplicity and reliability. However, these types of models have never been comprehensively optimized to overcome VI insensitivity and soil effects. Because grassland AGB is related to grassland type, in our research the integrated orderly classification system for grassland (IOCSG) was used to differentiate grassland types. The study area, located in Inner Mongolia, China, included desert steppe, typical steppe and meadow steppe. A pure VI (PVI) was extracted from the normal VI using spectral mixture analysis (SMA). Using a proportional relationship, PVI models were then constructed based on grassland type. The results demonstrated that the PVI models can have clear advantages over the more commonly used VI models. They simplify the parameterization of VI models and thus enhance models constructed for different regions with different remote sensing data sources. Notably, detailed differentiation of grassland types can improve the accuracy of AGB estimates. The methodology proposed in this study is particularly beneficial for AGB estimates at a national scale, especially for countries such as China with many grassland types. 相似文献

Summary The Ca, Mg, S, Mn and Cu contents in leaves ofCoffea canephora trees selected in 64 plots under a 4×4×2 NPK trial were determined after seven years of fertilizer application. It was observed that NPK applications increased Mn uptake, P application increased the uptake of Cu, Ca and S while application of N and K did not enhance the uptake of Cu, Mg, Ca and S. It was shown that as a result of NPK applications, Ca and Mg had become deficient in coffee leaves, which corroborates earlier findings based on soil analysis. 相似文献

Plant growth can be limited by resource acquisition and defence against consumers, leading to contrasting trade‐off possibilities. The competition‐defence hypothesis posits a trade‐off between competitive ability and defence against enemies (e.g. herbivores and pathogens). The growth‐defence hypothesis suggests that strong competitors for nutrients are also defended against enemies, at a cost to growth rate. We tested these hypotheses using observations of 706 plant populations of over 500 species before and following identical fertilisation and fencing treatments at 39 grassland sites worldwide. Strong positive covariance in species responses to both treatments provided support for a growth‐defence trade‐off: populations that increased with the removal of nutrient limitation (poor competitors) also increased following removal of consumers. This result held globally across 4 years within plant life‐history groups and within the majority of individual sites. Thus, a growth‐defence trade‐off appears to be the norm, and mechanisms maintaining grassland biodiversity may operate within this constraint. 相似文献

Gaps in our current understanding and quantification of biomass carbon stocks, particularly in tropics, lead to large uncertainty in future projections of the terrestrial carbon balance. We use the recently published GlobBiomass data set of forest above‐ground biomass (AGB) density for the year 2010, obtained from multiple remote sensing and in situ observations at 100 m spatial resolution to evaluate AGB estimated by nine dynamic global vegetation models (DGVMs). The global total forest AGB of the nine DGVMs is 365 ± 66 Pg C, the spread corresponding to the standard deviation between models, compared to 275 Pg C with an uncertainty of ~13.5% from GlobBiomass. Model‐data discrepancy in total forest AGB can be attributed to their discrepancies in the AGB density and/or forest area. While DGVMs represent the global spatial gradients of AGB density reasonably well, they only have modest ability to reproduce the regional spatial gradients of AGB density at scales below 1000 km. The 95th percentile of AGB density (AGB95) in tropics can be considered as the potential maximum of AGB density which can be reached for a given annual precipitation. GlobBiomass data show local deficits of AGB density compared to the AGB95, particularly in transitional and/or wet regions in tropics. We hypothesize that local human disturbances cause more AGB density deficits from GlobBiomass than from DGVMs, which rarely represent human disturbances. We then analyse empirical relationships between AGB density deficits and forest cover changes, population density, burned areas and livestock density. Regression analysis indicated that more than 40% of the spatial variance of AGB density deficits in South America and Africa can be explained; in Southeast Asia, these factors explain only ~25%. This result suggests TRENDY v6 DGVMs tend to underestimate biomass loss from diverse and widespread anthropogenic disturbances, and as a result overestimate turnover time in AGB. 相似文献

Acinetobacter baumannii causes several nosocomial infections and poses major threat when it is multidrug resistant. Even pan drug-resistant strains have been reported in some countries. The intensive care unit (ICU) mortality rate ranged from 45.6% to 60.9% and it is as high as 84.3% when ventilator-associated pneumonia was caused by XDR (extensively drug resistant) A. baumannii. Acinetobacter baumannii constituted 9.4% of all Gram-negative organisms throughout the hospital and 22.6% in the ICUs according to a study carried out in an Indian hospital. One of the major factors contributing to drug resistance in A. baumannii infections is biofilm development. Quorum sensing (QS) facilitates biofilm formation and therefore the search for ‘quorum quenchers’ has increased recently. Such compounds are expected to inhibit biofilm formation and hence reduce/prevent development of drug resistance in the bacteria. Some of these compounds also target synthesis of some virulence factors (VF). Several candidate drugs have been identified and are at various stages of drug development. Since quorum quenching, inhibition of biofilm formation and inhibition of VF synthesis do not pose any threat to the DNA replication and cell division of the bacteria, chances of resistance development to such compounds is presumably rare. Thus, these compounds ideally qualify as adjunct therapeutics and could be administered along with an antibiotic to reduce chances of resistance development and also to increase the effectiveness of antimicrobial therapy. This review describes the state-of-art in QS process in Gram-negative bacteria in general and in A. baumannii in particular. This article elaborates the nature of QS mediators, their characteristics, and the methods for their detection and quantification. Various potential sites in the QS pathway have been highlighted as drug targets and the candidate quorum quenchers which inhibit the mediator’s synthesis or function are enlisted. 相似文献
