The west coast of Spitsbergen is influenced by water masses of Atlantic and Arctic origin. During the winter of January–April 2006, water temperatures on the West Spitsbergen Shelf were ∼3°C warmer than typical winter conditions, leading to a coastal sea ice cover of reduced thickness, extent and duration. A sediment trap deployed from September 2005 to May 2006 in the outer basin of Kongsfjorden (NW Spitsbergen) at a depth of 115 m has provided a continuous winter time-series of zooplankton during a period of rapid increase in water temperatures. Prior to an anomalous and prolonged influx of warm Atlantic water (AW) starting at the end of January, the trap samples were dominated by the boreo-Arctic copepod Metridia longa. Species that increased in abundance during the influx included late stages of Calanus finmarchicus, C. glacialis, C. hyperboreus and Paraeuchaeta norvegica. The early introduction of shelf populations into the fjord, and thus increased copepod biomass relative to typical winter conditions with little advection, has implications for the marine pelagic food web and pelagic-benthic coupling.  相似文献

Towards a generalized biogeography of the Southern Ocean benthos   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Aim To investigate whether the biogeographical regions proposed by J. W. Hedgpeth and widely adopted by other authors hold true, are an oversimplification or with further data might show a unified Antarctic province. Location Southern Hemisphere. Methods The distributions of 1318 species of bivalves, 4656 species of gastropods, 1465 species of cheilostome and 167 species of cyclostome bryozoans were analysed for 29 regions in the Southern Hemisphere, including South American, South African, Tasmanian, New Zealand, sub‐Antarctic and Antarctic regions. We present data on species richness, rates of endemism, patterns of radiation, faunal similarities and multivariate biogeographical analyses. Results The most striking pattern to emerge from our data set of species counts per region was a strong east–west hemispheric asymmetry, with high species numbers in New Zealand, Tasmania and South Africa and low numbers in South America. In contrast, no difference was found in richness between the east and west parts of the Southern Ocean. We compared findings in our model taxa with published data on ascidians, cephalopods and pycnogonids. Further evidence of strong faunal links between the Antarctic and South America is reported in this study, although we found little evidence for a biogeographical relationship between the Antarctic or South America and New Zealand/Tasmania. Strong evidence exists for a long‐term influence of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current upon the distribution of Southern Ocean benthos. This is demonstrated by the reduced prevalence of South American species in the Antarctic and sub‐Antarctic with increasing distance from South America in the direction of the current. Three of our four study taxa (bivalves, cheilostomes and cyclostomes) show the Southern Ocean as a ‘single functional unit’ with no evidence for a biogeographical split between east and west. Main conclusions Unlike the biogeographical schemes previously proposed, we show that biogeographical regions in the Southern Ocean differ depending upon the class of animals being considered. Despite this we suggest that some general rules are viable, including species endemism rates of around 50%, a single Antarctic province and a definite distinction between the sub‐Antarctic islands influenced by South America and those of New Zealand.  相似文献

The extent to which response to environmental change is mediated by species-specific ecology is an important aspect of the population histories of tropical taxa. During the Pleistocene glacial cycles and associated sea level fluctuations, the Sunda region in Southeast Asia experienced concurrent changes in landmass area and the ratio of forest to open habitat, providing an ideal setting to test the expectation that habitat associations played an important role in determining species' response to the opportunity for geographic expansion. We used mitochondrial control region sequences and six microsatellite loci to compare the phylogeographic structure and demographic histories of four broadly sympatric species of Old World fruit bats in the genus, Cynopterus. Two forest-associated species and two open-habitat generalists were sampled along a latitudinal transect in Singapore, peninsular Malaysia, and southern Thailand. Contrary to expectations based on habitat associations, the geographic scale of population structure was not concordant across ecologically similar species. We found evidence for long and relatively stable demographic history in one forest and one open-habitat species, and inferred non-coincident demographic expansions in the second forest and open-habitat species. Thus, while these results indicate that Pleistocene climate change did not have a single effect on population structure across species, a correlation between habitat association and response to environmental change was supported in only two of four species. We conclude that interactions between multiple factors, including historical and contemporary environmental change, species-specific ecology and interspecific interactions, have shaped the recent evolutionary histories of Cynopterus fruit bats in Southeast Asia.  相似文献

Pectate lyase genes have been documented as excellent candidates for improvement of fruit firmness. However, implementation of pectate lyase in regulating fruit postharvest deterioration has not been fully explored. In this report, 22 individual pectate lyase genes in tomato were identified, and one pectate lyase gene SlPL (Solyc03g111690) showed dominant expression during fruit maturation. RNA interference of SlPL resulted in enhanced fruit firmness and changes in pericarp cells. More importantly, the SlPL‐RNAi fruit demonstrated greater antirotting and pathogen‐resisting ability. Compared to wild‐type, SlPL‐RNAi fruit had higher levels of cellulose and hemicellulose, whereas the level of water‐soluble pectin was lower. Consistent with this, the activities of peroxidase, superoxide dismutase and catalase were higher in SlPL‐RNAi fruit, and the malondialdehyde concentration was lower. RNA‐Seq results showed large amounts of differentially expressed genes involved in hormone signalling, cell wall modification, oxidative stress and pathogen resistance. Collectively, these data demonstrate that pectate lyase plays an important role in both fruit softening and pathogen resistance. This may advance knowledge of postharvest fruit preservation in tomato and other fleshy fruit.  相似文献

采用1992年Ruttenberg连续提取法(SEDEX)将黄东海陆架区沉积物中的磷分为交换态磷(Ex-P),Fe结合态磷(Fe-P),自生磷(Au-P),碎屑磷(De-P),有机磷(Or-P),分析了各形态磷的平面和垂直分布特征;利用沉积物年代序列测定的结果,探讨了柱状沉积物中不同形态磷的含量变化,并进一步分析了该区域磷形态的生物可利用性.结果表明,黄东海陆架区表层沉积物各形态磷平均含量为:Au-P(140.72 μg/g)>De-P(59.23 μg/g)>Or-P(32.69 μg/g)>Fe-P(29.91 μg/g)>Ex-P(5.92 μg/g);各形态磷在沉积时间序列上分布不同,反映了不同时期人类活动和气候环境等因子对磷埋藏量影响的不同,其中Au-P在长江口H1-18站位含量比南黄海中部3个站位要低得多;调查区表层潜在生物有效磷为13.55%左右,仅仅占沉积磷中的一小部分.  相似文献

在探讨孢粉的传播、来源地的基础上,根据南海南北陆坡柱状剖面(17940 ,17964) 的孢粉资料推断末次冰盛期(包括氧同位素3 期的上部) 低海面时,南北出露的大陆架上生长的植被。末次冰盛期时北部大陆架曾分布以蒿属(Artemisia L.) 为主的草原植被,气候较今日冷且干旱。南部称为“巽他古陆”,曾覆盖热带低地雨林,河口及海岸为红树林,在周围岛屿上高山雨林曾多次向山下迁移,表明当时温度可能较今日低,但湿度没有明显变化。南北大陆架末次冰期时在植被与气候演化上的巨大差异,可能与南部巽他陆架的特殊位置( 西太平洋暖池) 有关  相似文献

We chose synaptic terminals of rat rod bipolar cells as a model system to study activity-related changes in the overall morphology and the fine structure of synaptic sites. Using confocal laser scanning microscopy in conjunction with three-dimensional reconstruction and electron microscopy, we examined the effect of light and dark adaptation on axon terminals identified by protein kinase C (PKC) immunoreactivity. Rod bipolar cell axon terminals consisted of 2–3 polymorphic boutons situated close to the ganglion cell layer and a single ovoid swelling located more distally. Both components of the terminal complex showed adaptation-dependent differences in the distribution of PKC immunoreactivity and in their morphology. In light-adapted rod bipolar cell axon terminals, PKC immunoreactivity was homogeneously distributed throughout the cytoplasm, whereas terminals from dark-adapted animals showed PKC immunoreactivity preferentially localised in the submembrane compartment and a reduced staining of the more central cytoplasm. In three-dimensional reconstructions of optical sections and at the ultrastructural level, the shape of light-adapted axon terminals was round and smooth and exhibited more convexly curved synaptic membranes. In contrast, dark-adapted terminals had irregular contours, numerous dimples and a concave synaptic curvature. No spinules of bipolar cell terminals were observed in dark-adapted material. These observations are discussed in the context of activity-related morphological plasticity of central nervous system synapses and of the functions of PKC in the cycle of vesicle fusion and retrieval at the tonically active ribbon synapses of the rod bipolar axon terminal. Serum defined BoLA-A antigens, together with BoLA-DQB RFLP patterns, were determined in 87 almost unrelated Norwegian cattle. Statistical analysis revealed strong linkage disequilibria between these loci at the population level. A total of 13 haplotypes were found to be present at frequencies significantly greater than those predicted on the basis of their component gene frequencies. Among these, the subgroups 1A and 1B of the DQ1 haplotype were found to be closely associated with the class I antigens A11 and w16, respectively. The association between A11 and DQ1A is of particular interest, as two independent studies, one employing class I serology, and the other RFLP analysis of the class II locus DQ, have previously indicated that A11 and DQ1A confer relative susceptibility to mastitis.  相似文献
