Copepod community ingestion rates of Calanus finmarchicus, Temora longicornis, Acartia longiremis and Pseudocalanus spp., and egg production rates of C. finmarchicus and T. longicornis, were studied in relation to phytoplankton composition, abundance and biomass on the Faroe shelf during a one-year cycle. The phytoplankton community during winter was mainly composed of small flagellates and the copepods of Pseudocalanus spp. As the spring bloom progressed, diatoms increased in abundance and dominated the biomass throughout summer. C. finmarchicus increased in numbers in early spring, while T. longicornis and A. longiremis dominated the community during summer and autumn. While no response in ingestion rates was observed for A. longiremis and Pseudocalanus spp. with increasing diatom biomass, both ingestion rates and egg production of C. finmarchicus and T. longicornis, generally increased, showing a dependence upon diatoms for production. The daily ingestion for C. finmarchicus females was 7% and 22% of body biomass during the pre-bloom and bloom period, respectively, while for T. longicornis females it was 33% and 56% and for A. longiremis females 22% and 33%, respectively. C. finmarchicus accounted for more than 80% of the total copepod ingestion in May, but in mid- and late summer, T. longicornis and A. longiremis dominated, and represented 80–90% of the total copepod ingestion. The proportion of reproductively mature C. finmarchicus increased as the phytoplankton biomass increased. Most of the time there was good agreement between herbivorous ingestion rates and calculated carbon demand for the observed egg production. Off the Po Delta in the northern Adriatic, three different foraminiferal associations were identified in the fraction >0.125 mm of 25 sediment samples. The first association concerns sample stations between depths of 5 and 13.5 m in the shallow, nutrient-rich belt and is characterised by dominant Ammonia beccarii. The second occupies the 29.5–38.5-m-deep, nutrient-rich zone of clay-rich sediment, where inputs from the Po are concentrated, and is dominated by Nonionella opima. The third association, in the 21–46-m-deep and nutrient-poor zone, is dominated by Textularia agglutinans. The same distribution of communities was obtained using total associations (living and dead specimens) and biocenosis (stained individuals). The good correspondence with the foraminiferal distributions described in the past indicates that, in spite of the occurrence of anoxic and dysoxic events, the environmental state in the northern Adriatic may be considered stable.  相似文献

Summary Mound-shaped algal banks and associated bioclastic deposits have been investigated on the Apulian shelf, SE Italy, off Capo d’Otranto and Santa Maria di Leuca within a bathymetric range of 53–60m water depth. The bioclastic deposits form different sand-gravel skeletal assemblages; each one characterised by different associations and occurrence of prevailing organisms in relation to substratum types. These deposits lie on a lee shore and form rhodalgal and bryomol relict-modern deposits which originate from the banks’ erosion by means of bottom currents and storms. These play a significant role in reworking bottom preventing colonization by a sessile stabilizing bottom community, and mobile deposits prevent large encrustations. Sediments are thus characterised by a variable taphonomical preservation state and time-averaging as shown by the occurrence of abraded bryozoan growth forms. The banks, sub-circular in shape, display a maximum diameter of 70 m and 1–2m relief. Their position on the shelf coincides with the present day 50 m isobath and it is assumed to correspond to a paleoshore such as that which formed in the Holocene during the transgression following the last ice age. Living counterparts of these banks occur today north of the study area at 10–30 m water depth.  相似文献

Using shipboard data collected from the central west Florida shelf (WFS) between 2000 and 2001, an optical classification algorithm was developed to differentiate toxic Karenia brevis blooms (>104 cells l−1) from other waters (including non-blooms and blooms of other phytoplankton species). The identification of K. brevis blooms is based on two criteria: (1) chlorophyll a concentration ≥1.5 mg m−3 and (2) chlorophyll-specific particulate backscattering at 550 nm ≤ 0.0045 m2 mg−1. The classification criteria yielded an overall accuracy of 99% in identifying both K. brevis blooms and other waters from 194 cruise stations. The algorithm was validated using an independent dataset collected from both the central and south WFS between 2005 and 2006. After excluding data from estuarine and post-hurricane turbid waters, an overall accuracy of 94% was achieved with 86% of all K. brevis bloom data points identified successfully. Satisfactory algorithm performance (88% overall accuracy) was also achieved when using underway chlorophyll fluorescence and backscattering data collected during a repeated alongshore transect between Tampa Bay and Florida Bay in 2005 and 2006. These results suggest that it may be possible to use presently available, commercial optical backscattering instrumentation on autonomous platforms (e.g. moorings, gliders, and AUVs) for rapid and timely detection and monitoring of K. brevis blooms on the WFS.  相似文献

Incidental capture in fisheries threatens many marine vertebrates, however, conservation cannot be effective without identifying major sources of mortality. For the critically endangered leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea), a reliance on fisheries observer data and an absence of behavioural data sets corresponding to a large and diverse sample of animals have focused conservation efforts on a very limited part of the species marine habitat. Using the largest satellite telemetry data set for Atlantic leatherbacks, morphometrics from foraging animals and entanglement records, we show annual return migrations to key feeding areas by males, females and juveniles, and demonstrate the importance of northern latitudes to leatherbacks. We show that leatherbacks are vulnerable to entanglement in northern coastal and shelf waters, where turtle–fishery interactions represent a greater threat to this species than previously recognized. Unless conservation efforts expand to coastal and shelf areas, present efforts alone will not be sufficient to save the species.  相似文献

The effects of large, externally attached pop‐up satellite archival tags (PSATs) were compared with those of small implanted data storage tags (DSTs) on adult Atlantic salmon Salmo salar during their ocean migration in regards to depth utilization, diving depth, diving rate, diving speed and temperatures experienced. Additionally the return rate and growth of individuals tagged with PSATs was compared with those of small acoustic tags and DSTs. Overall, the depth distribution of individuals tagged with PSATs was similar to that of those tagged with DSTs, reflecting the pelagic nature of S. salar at sea. Individuals tagged with PSATs, however, dived less frequently and to shallower depths, and dived and surfaced at slower velocities. Sea surface temperatures experienced by individuals tagged with PSATs were similar to those experienced by those tagged with DSTs for the same time of year, suggesting that there were no large differences in the ocean migration. Return rates did not depend on whether individuals were tagged with PSATs or not, indicating that survival at sea was not impacted by PSATs in comparison to small internal tags. Individuals tagged with PSATs, however, had a smaller increase in body mass than those tagged with acoustic tags or DSTs. It was concluded that PSATs are suitable for use in researching large‐scale migratory behaviour of adult S. salar at sea, but that some effects on their behaviour from tagging must be expected. Effects of PSATs may be largest in the short term when S. salar are swimming in bursts at high speeds. Even though individuals tagged with PSATs performed deep and frequent dives, the results of this study suggest that untagged individuals would perform even deeper and more frequent dives than tagged individuals.  相似文献

In Saxony (southeast Germany), the global early Late Cretaceous transgression is reflected by the onlap of shallow-marine siliciclastics of the lower Upper Cenomanian Oberhäslich Formation (Calycoceras naviculare Zone) onto the eastern Erzgebirge, the central part of the emergent Mid-European Island. Based on detailed logging of sections south of Dresden and the study of extensive collection material, the depositional environment and macroinvertebrate assemblages of the Oberhäslich Formation have been reconstructed. This unit, with a mean thickness of 10–15 m, usually shows a fining-upward trend that may become reversed towards the top, was laid down in a single 3rd-order sea-level cycle and is capped by an unconformity at the base of the overlying upper Upper Cenomanian Dölzschen Formation (sequence boundary Cenomanian 5; junction of the Calycoceras naviculare and Metoicoceras geslinianum zones). The macroinvertebrate assemblage of the Oberhäslich Formation, collected mainly from bioturbated, fine- or rarely medium-grained, quartz-rich sandstones, is fairly diverse, comprising nearly 50 taxa, predominantly bivalves (94.3%). Most conspicuous and abundant are relatively large forms such as Rhynchostreon (R.) suborbiculatum (25%) and Inoceramus pictus spp. (21%), eponymous taxa of the Rhynchostreon suborbiculatum/Inoceramus pictus assemblage. Non-bivalve benthic invertebrates are rare and represented by rather poorly preserved irregular and regular echinoids, siliceous sponges, a few gastropods, crustacean remains and a single starfish. Common Thalassinoides and Ophiomorpha burrows indicate that crustaceans were an important part of the infauna. Pervasive bioturbation resulted in a post-depositional homogenization of the sediments while all body fossils are preserved as (composite) internal moulds. The guild structure of the Rhynchostreon suborbiculatum/Inoceramus pictus assemblage shows a predominance of epifaunal and semi-infaunal suspension feeders (95.3%), suggesting eutrophic and unstable “green-water conditions” of an inner-shelf setting. Deposit-feeding biota are rare. The common occurrence of articulated bivalves and storm-induced shell beds indicate episodic rapid burial, most probably by tempestites. A current-influenced, well-oxygenated and nutrient-rich environment slightly below fair-weather base is inferred for the fine-grained sandy, fossiliferous sediments of the Oberhäslich Formation.  相似文献

Monoclonal antibodies of the immunoglobulin G (IgG) type have become mainstream therapeutics for the treatment of many life‐threatening diseases. For their successful application in the clinic and a favorable cost‐benefit ratio, the design and formulation of these therapeutic molecules must guarantee long‐term stability for an extended period of time. Accelerated stability studies, e.g., by employing thermal denaturation, have the great potential for enabling high‐throughput screening campaigns to find optimal molecular variants and formulations in a short time. Surprisingly, no validated quantitative analysis of these accelerated studies has been performed yet, which clearly limits their application for predicting IgG stability. Therefore, we have established a quantitative approach for the assessment of the kinetic stability over a broad range of temperatures. To this end, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) experiments were performed with a model IgG, testing chaotropic formulations and an extended temperature range, and they were subsequently analyzed by our recently developed three‐step sequential model of IgG denaturation, consisting of one reversible and two irreversible steps. A critical comparison of the predictions from this model with data obtained by an orthogonal fluorescence probe method, based on 8‐anilinonaphthalene‐1‐sulfonate binding to partially unfolded states, resulted in very good agreement. In summary, our study highlights the validity of this easy‐to‐perform analysis for reliably assessing the kinetic stability of IgGs, which can support accelerated formulation development of monoclonal antibodies by ranking different formulations as well as by improving colloidal stability models.  相似文献

The seasonal occurrence of the monogenean ectoparasite Gyrodactylus salaris Malmberg infecting Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus (L.) in the two rivers Skibotnelva and Signaldalselva in northern Norway was studied in the period from autumn 2003 to autumn 2005. Skibotnelva has been infected with the parasite since 1979, and treated with rotenone twice. Most likely resident Arctic charr avoided the rotenone treatment in small tributary streams, and thus was the source of the repeated re-infection of this river. G. salaris was first recorded in Signaldalselva in the year 2000 and it is still untreated. Unlike Atlantic salmon, which is highly susceptible to G. salaris, Arctic charr can display a wide range of host-responses to G. salaris infections. Arctic charr were sampled by electro fishing with a total sample of 681 Arctic charr. The results from this study demonstrate an evident seasonal dynamic in G. salaris infection in charr in both rivers. Parasite intensities fluctuated with the rise and fall in temperature through the year, with an autumn high and spring low. There was a significantly lower prevalence and mean intensity of G. salaris in Skibotnelva than in Signaldalselva. There were also a lower prevalence and intensity of G. salaris in the older than in the youngest charr. The different history of infection and treatment in the two rivers might be the underlying cause of these observed dissimilarities. The current study indicates that Arctic charr is a good natural host for G. salaris.  相似文献
